3G Network Optimization / Data Throttling

Today I called Verizon Customer service about a data problem I was having.  I noticed over the past 2 days my network connection was slow.  Netflix would buffer constantly and pandora would play for 10 seconds and then buffer for 20.  I spoke to the first representative around 11:50 AM.  She informed me that I was in fact being "Network Optimized" because I was a little over 3gb.  She told me my only options to keep from being "throttled" was to upgrade to a 4g phone or go to a tiered data plan.  I said that that tiered data was out of the questions because I was currently at an unlimited plan.  She then said she could early upgrade me but I would have to pay the price point price of the Galaxy Nexus, $299. She also offered me $10 off each line for 2 months (total of $60). I told her that was also unacceptable because I was basically being told I had to spend more money to use the service I had already.  She said she would talk to her supervisor who was in a meeting and call me back at 2:00 PM EST.
At 4:00 PM EST I had not received a call from Verizon so I called back in.  I spoke with a CS Rep named Anthony who confirmed all the same things I already knew about data throttling (in the 3 1/2 hours between calls I read up on the situation online).  After pleading my same case to Anthony he told me he could do nothing and I asked to speak to his supervisor, he side stepped this originally and told me he (supervisor) would not be able to do anything either.  I asked again to speak to his supervisor and he obliged.  After holding for about 10 minutes I was speaking with a Supervisor by the name of Brent.  I plead the same exact case and explained to Brent that this was basically extortion by Verizon to force me into either spending money or giving up my unlimited data.  He offered me a $30 discount on a 4G device.  I declined the offer because $30 is nothing.  If I went to my full upgrade date, 4/10/12 I would get $50 off.  I asked to speak to Management... the next step in the chain.  He took my information and we decided a good time for management would be 4:30 PM EST on March 8th.  Today is March 7th.
I write this so others can see the path and hopefully see some resolution to the situation.  I equated what verizon is doing to me as if my power company called me and said that I had to pay the same amount but I would only get half the amount of power.  Or if my cable company called me and said that, Yes you have unlimited data but we are going to slow down your connection to 25% of what it can do and that I still have to pay the same.  These practices would not be tolerated with your utilities, but for some reason it seems acceptable for my cellular connection.  I'm on business a lot and need my data to be snappy and effective, which it has been in the past.  I have used a lot of data this month (3gb) but have used more before and have never been throttled.  I have read the TOS (Terms of Service) that I signed for our 2 year upgrade last time and see nothing in it in reference to "Network Optimization".  With nothing in the TOS about Network Optimization or Data Throttling Verizon is violating their own TOS by reducing the bandwidth of my connection.
All I am asking is that either Verizon honor our original agreement and release my account from a throttled down connection, or upgrade me to a 4G phone (Galaxy Nexus) for free.  I only ask the latter due to the fact that the original CS told me that if the released the hold on the data that the system would automatically re-apply it till the end of the current monthly service period.  I will keep you all posted after the call with management tomorrow at 4:30.

Thats not true...  I pulled this from Verizon Policies located at http://support.verizonwireless.com/information/broadband.html
Verizon Wireless uses the following mechanisms to manage network resources.  Both are implemented in a way that is content and user neutral.
If a customer with a 3G device uses an extraordinary amount of data and falls within the top 5% of Verizon Wireless data users, Verizon Wireless may reduce the customer’s data throughput speeds when the customer is connected to a congested cell site for the remainder the customer’s then current and immediately following billing cycle to ensure high quality network performance for other users at locations and times of peak demand.  Our proactive management of the Verizon Wireless network is designed to ensure that the remaining 95% of data customers aren’t negatively affected by the inordinate data consumption of just a few users.
Verizon Wireless has implemented optimization and transcoding technologies in its 3G Ev-DO network to transmit data files in a more efficient manner to allow available network capacity to benefit the greatest number of users.  These techniques include caching less data, using less capacity, and sizing video files more appropriately for mobile devices.  The optimization process is agnostic as to the content itself and to the website that provides it.  While Verizon Wireless invests much effort to avoid changing text, image, and video files in the compression process and while any change to the file is likely to be indiscernible, the optimization process may minimally impact the appearance of the file as displayed on a customer’s device.  For a further, more detailed explanation of the techniques, please visit www.verizonwireless.com/vzwoptimization

  • Verizon's "Network Optimization" on 3G Unlimited Plans

I'm sure that this has probably been discussed here before, maybe numerous times since I don't frequent these boards, but since it is something that is now impacting me and since I've noticed others posting threads here and other forums about sporadically slow speeds with Verizon 3G during certain times of the day without any mention of this being the cause I thought I would share my experience with it first hand.
I just found out about it yesterday when I called Verizon to complain about the performance I've been having off and on the last few weeks during peak times of the day (Download speeds in the 100-200Kbps range) for my 3G service and what I soon found out from the rep was that in December there was a "feature" added to my account called Network Optimization which basically is a means to throttle users who have 3G Unlimited plans and use the internet in areas which they deem as being congested. Any time you go over 2GB in a past billing cycle even though your on an Unlimited plan your up for it to be added to your account.
And in a way I could understand them needing to crack down on really high users which I myself no doubt fall into on certain months since I have a Business Unlimited plan and I'm on the computer for hours every day using it with constantly refreshing websites, checking e-mails, and then downloading Windows and Mac updates and at times large files that I need. So it's nothing for me to hit 10-20GB in a month's time, especially around the holidays.
But the biggest problem that I have with it is the fact they're free to add it to your account every time you go over 2GB in a month and reside in what they consider a congested area. Because someone that is on an Unlimited plan, and especially a Business Unlimited plan, should at least be given a cap of 10-12GB before they add on this "Network Optimization" feature to throttle your speeds because they are offering 10-12GB packages to Smartphone users without adding any Network Optimization to their accounts if they reside in a congested area and those types of users are in far greater number than those of us using laptop connect plans.
But it all boils down to Verizon wanting to force the grandfathered Unlimited users into giving up their plans and signing new 2 year agreements on a more expensive tiered plan than it has anything to do with improving the network in congested areas. If they wanted to improve the network in congested areas they would be cracking down on the Smartphone users who are using mega amounts of data to constantly stream Youtube and Netflix all day but they don't. Or better yet how about spending money to upgrade the 3G towers that are congested instead of throttling your users and continually taking on more new users? Yeah like Verizon is actually going to do something like that right.
Anyways I'm a little ****** off at Verizon at the moment since this is the only internet option I have available to me out here in my rural area and I have to have it for my home business so I can't just drop them yet as much as I would like to until they absolutely force me to.
Is anyone else here facing these same troubles at the moment with your supposedly Unlimited plans and care to share your experience so far?

You missed the point of what I just said. I didn't imply that there isn't a clause there for them to be able to legally enforce bandwidth caps on the unlimited plans if they wanted to, what I said is that there is nothing fair about having a "Network Optimization" throttle added to your account each month you go past 2GB when there is no Network throttling being done to the largest percentage of users who are on Smartphones.
If Verizon is capable of offering 10-12GB packages to Smartphone users with NO throttling then why are 3G Unlimited laptop connect users including those with Business accounts that require the most bandwidth being hit at only 2GB? Why isn't the excessive usage cap at something more "fair" like 10-12GB? And why are you even needing to throttle the laptop connect users who only make up a small percentage of your customer base in terms of bandwidth used compared to the iPhone and Nexus users?
Huge difference in price paid.  Simply put the people who are paying more money are paying for their bandwidth.  Bandwidth isn't free for Verizon.  All carriers when they offered their unlimited plans they were overselling their network then realized they can't handle the capacity when devices started to get more sophisticated too quickly.
For the people that come on here and say there is no difference in computer data and phone data...  YES there is a difference.  I have personally tested it out multiple times and on a laptop I can use 5times the amount of data in the same 1 hour period than I do on my cell phone going to the same sites.  The difference is background data, and the speed(jumping between sites, tabs, and bookmarks) you can surf the web is different between the two which people ALWAYS overlook.
$60 vs $80 is not that huge of difference in price paid, what is a huge difference is 2GB and 10GB. And yes you can use far more data on a computer or laptop than a smartphone, even though laptop connect users only make up a fraction of Verizon's customer base compared to Smartphone users, but that is exactly why it is ridiculous that you try and cap Unlimited 3G desktop/laptop users at 2GB but then offer 10-12GB tiered plans to Smartphone users who aren't the ones that need it. And that is something that obviously you and Verizon are both overlooking.
Let me ask you this, do you personally have a DSL or Cable connection at home outside of your Verizon 3G/4G service? What about at work?

  • Cannot migrate VM in VMM but can in Failover Cluster Manager network adapters network optimization warning

I have a 4 node Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster and manage it with VMM 2012 R2.  I just upgraded the cluster from 2012 RTM to 2012 R2 last week which meant pulling 2 nodes out of the existing cluster, creating the new R2 cluster, running the copy
cluster roles wizard since the VHDs are stored on CSVs, and then added the other 2 nodes after installing R2 on them, back into the cluster.  After upgrading the cluster I am unable to migrate some VMs from one node to another.  When trying to do
a live migration, I get the following notifications under the Rating Explanation tab:
Warning: There currently are not network adapters with network optimization available on host Node7.
Error: Configuration issues related to the virtual machine VM1 prevent deployment and must be resolved before deployment can continue.
I get this error for 3 out of the 4 nodes in the cluster.  I do not get this error for Node10 and I can live migrate to that node in VMM.  It has a green check for Network optimization.  The others do not.  These errors only affect
VMM. In the Failover Cluster Manager, I can live migrate any VM to any node in the cluster without any issues.  In the old 2012 RTM cluster I used to get the warning but I could still migrate the VMs anywhere I wanted to.  I've checked the network
adapter settings in VMM on VM1 and they are the same as VM2 which can migrate to any host in VMM.  I then checked the network adapter settings of the VMs from the Failover Cluster Manager and VM1 under Hardware Acceleration has "Enable virtual machine
queue" and Enable IPsec task offloading" checked.  I unchecked those 2 boxes refreshed the VMs, refreshed the cluster, rebooted the VM and refreshed again but I still could not live migrate VM1.  Why is this an issue now but it wasn't before
running on the new cluster?  How do I resolve the issue?  VMM is useless if I can't migrate all my VMs with it.

I checked the settings on the physical nics on each node and here is what I found:
Node7: Virtual machine queue is not listed (Cannot live migrate problem VM's to this node in VMM)
Node8: Virtual machine queue is not listed (Cannot live migrate problem VM's to this node in VMM)
Node9: Virtual machine queue is listed and enabled (Cannot live migrate problem VM's to this node in VMM)Node10: Virtual machine queue is listed and enabled (Live Migration works on all VMs in VMM)
From Hyper-V or the Failover Cluster manager I can see in the network adapter settings of the VMs under Hardware Acceleration that these two settings are checked "Enable virtual machine queue" and Enable IPsec task offloading".  I unchecked those
2 boxes, refreshed the VMs, refreshed the cluster, rebooted the VM and refreshed again but I still cannot live migrate the problem VMs.
It seems to me that if I could adjust those VM settings from VMM that it might fix the problem.  Why isn't that an option to do so in VMM?
Do I have to rebuild the VMM server with a new DB and then before adding the Hyper-V cluster uncheck those two settings on the VM's from Hyper-V manager?  That would be a lot of unnecessary work but I don't know what else to do at this point.

  • The Full Optimization & Lite Optimization Data Manager packages are failing

    Hi,
The Full Optimization and Lite Optimization Data Manager packages are failing with the following message "An Error occured while querying for the webfolders path".
Can anyone had similar issue earlier, please let me know how can we rectify the issue.
    Thanks,
    Vamshi Krishna

    Hi,
Does the Full Optimize work from the Administration Console directly?
If it's the case, delete the scheduled package for Full Optimize every night (in both eData -> Package Schedule Status and in the Scheduled Tasks on your server Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks), and then try to reschedule it from scratch.
If it's not solving your problem, I would check if there are some "wrong" records into the FACT and FAC2 tables.
After that, I would also check if the tblAppOptimize is having other values than 0. For all applications, you should have a 0 there.
    Hope this will help you..
    Best Regards,

More than likely the PRAM battery is failing. I have the same problem and am contemplating changing it myself, not an easy task, or taking it to the Apple Store to see how much they would charge to change it. Actually my problems are worse than yours, if I sleep or shut down my MacBook it won't restart without trying about 50 times. As it is right now I never let it sleep and everything works fine.

  • After updated to ios 4.3.2, network cellular data usage bug..

I just updated my iphone 4 to ios 4.3.2, and I have so many problems now
I have lag problem that it takes forever to access to setting.
Also the network cellular data usage keeps changing..
I got 118TB sent and sometimes I get -162...sent  I am outside of country so I didn't wanna get roaming charge so I put on airplane mode
and I turned off cellular data and the first time I checked my usage I was freaked out!
It scares me that 118TB that was sent which is ridiculous and I never ever used actually will be on my bill or something..
I am wondering if this is just an error that I can ignore..it scares me..
and is there any way I can fix it?
    i have screenshots

    Hard-reset didn't work multiple times.
Restore from backup didn't work either.
I called AT&T from skype on my computer and resolved the issue. Thank you for your help everyone. Here is the solution that worked for me for others to reference:
I swapped my iphone 4 SIM card with my wife's iphone 4 SIM card. Both phones received service immediately and I made successful test calls from both phones. Upon returning the SIM cards to the rightful phones, they both worked right away. I suppose just removing and reinstalling the SIM card could have worked.

  • Difference between cellular/voice network and data network?

Hey guys, so I'm trying to learn this, any help would be greatly appreciated.
What is the difference between cellular networks (I assume voice calls) and data networks (sending and recieving data, like using apps, etc.) for each of the different carriers?
I tried researching this up, but with absolutely no luck. Any help towards understanding cellular networks and the difference if any between it and data networks would be helpful! If you can point me in the right direction, it would help too!
Also, in the presence of a voice network but no data network, can data still be transmitted? Any values for speed for the major carriers?

  • Cannot receive calls when using Edge network for data?

    Hi,
This afternoon someone was trying to reach me urgently and all her calls to my iPhone went straight into my voicemail. My phone never rang and never showed missed calls.
I spoke to Aaron at Apple, thinking there might be a problem with my phone, and he told me that when the Edge network is in use, then the phone will not ring and calls will be routed straight to voicemail.
Is this really expected behavior? I was not aware of it.
    iPhone 8GB

This has nothing to do with EDGE all other phones will notify you and pause the connection. i posted about this 2 days ago but the thread got deleted.
here is a video that proves this, the noise is from the GSM but the user is clearly on the edge network.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=NMm2AY-_TTY
this is from Tier 2 suport at Apple.
Everyone having this issue should call 1-800-MY iPhon. Ask to speak to Tier II support, the person you get may try to help, and may need to give you a case number. You'll probably have to wait a while on hold.
I just spent an hour on the phone with Tier I & II. The tier I guy started by saying that when you use EDGE it will always go to voicemail. I told him, I was on a user forum & some people said they don't have the issue. He then tested it on his phone & experienced the direct to v-mail issue. We talked about how this was a real problem & how both of our nokia phones didn't have this issue (he actually had the E-61 also). He gave me a case number & transferred my to tier II. The tier II guy told me that this was a software issue. That a pop-up needs to be designed into the software to allow the user the option to disconnect the data connection & accept the voice call, or not. I told him that I'd read on a user forum that some users get voice calls while using EDGE. He said that if they are using you tube the call will automatically interrupt & switch out of you tube. We then tested this on my iPhone & it worked (i.e. the call interupted you tube). He said the software currently decides to disconnect data or send calls to voice mail during EDGE transmissions based on what the user is doing. Phone calls take priority over you tube & widgets (stock & weather)but safari and e-mail take priority over phone calls. He said the thought was, it would be more annoying to users to be in the middle of sending an e-mail and having mail disconnected for a phone call, than having the call go to voicemail. The ideal solution is to have a choice (like other phones allow) but right now the iPhone software does not have a pop-up designed allowing the user to accept the call or keep the data connection. (He seemed to be familiar with this on other phones while being tethered to a macbook to use their data connections & getting voice calls during downloads).
He said he was submitting this to the engineering group & said the more people that call tier II about this & submit it as an issue via online feedback, the higher priority it will get to be addressed in the first software update. So if you want to see this fixed start calling and submitting the issue http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html in as much detail as possible (specifically say that other existing phones Nokia S60s etc. have this function).
and here is a thread that is discussing this serious problem. note it is now many pages long.

  • IMac to PC networking - 1903 Date Problem

I am running a G4 iMac that is networked to a PC with Windows XP. All file sharing works well, but when I use the iMac to read files from my PC, all the networked files show up as created in 1903!! I have tried copying the files to the Mac, opening them and re-saving them but the date does not change. What am I doing wrong? How can I get these dates to be accurate?

Use the 'touch' command to change file access and modification times.
Run terminal to bring up a command line.
Typing in 'touch' at the command line will bring up a list of command parameters. For more detailed documentation, then type 'man touch' at the command line.

  • Create a network safe data collection screen

I am trying to create a data collection screen that will be fool proof if the network should have to fail.
I have created an irpt page that allows inputs and does calculations of this data.  I will also have an irpt page that will replace our error page that will appear when the network fails.
The question is can I have the data append to an xml file or append a text file locally on the hard drive?  Can I have it smart enough that it will ping the network and/or the database.  If everything is up and running to upload the data, delete the xml or text file and reload the original irpt page?

You can also try using AJAX. Maybe make a HTTP call to the backend every few seconds and if the network is down, maybe give a pop-up. GMail does the same thing if it fails to send your mail, for e.g.
But be forewarned that the moment you close the web page, your data will be lost and there will be no way of getting it back. Alternatively you can save the data on the server (using AJAX, again) every few seconds and then when the network is down maybe warn the user with a popup. This way the last saved data will still be available to you.
