526WLC upgraded, no bootloader

Hello,
we try to install three access point (AIR-AP521G) and one controler (AIR-WLC526-K9 ),
we upgraded the access point from standalone mode to light mode to work with controller, all seem to be fine.
I installed the Cisco Configuration Assistant, i upgraded it to the last version 1.6, a wizard for configure the wlc526 controller was available.
When i launched it, an error occured, it needed to upgrade my controller (4.2 needed, controller had 4.0 version).
We took the last version named : AIR-WLC520-K9-4-2-61-8.aes.
I uploaded it to the controller, and after the reboot we changed boot options.
But we answered "yes" to "upgrade bootloader" option.
When the upgrade are done, we arrived to a grub minimal interface, like this :

Can you help me ?

Some very good new for everyone who has experienced this very frustrating error. I have found a resolution to this problem (well it fixed my issue, which certainly seems extremely similar to this one)...
Type what you see following the Grub command prompt...
Symptom:
A WLC526, WLC2006, WLC2106 or NM-AIR-WLC6 may seen to display a
"grub>" prompt on the console port. It will be unable to boot the
WLC software and will not be able to operate normally.
Workaround:
For AIR-WLC526 / AIR-WLC2006 / AIR-WLC2106:
From the grub prompt use the following commands to boot primary image
grub> root (hd0,1)
grub> kernel /bzImage-primary root=/dev/ram ramdisk_size=32768 printk=yes
console=ttyS0,9600
grub> initrd (hd0,1)/initrd-primary
grub> boot
From the grub prompt use the following commands to boot secondary image
grub> root (hd0,1)
grub> kernel /bzImage-secondary root=/dev/ram ramdisk_size=32768 printk=yes console=ttyS0,9600
grub> initrd (hd0,1)/initrd-secondary
grub> boot
Then TFTP download an official version of WLC code, to install a bootloader
for the WLC.
This was the fix that I have been searching for - I hope it works for you too.

  • Upgrade BootLoader on Cisco WLC 4404

What is the latest Bootloader for the Cisco WLC 4404?  And where can I download it?
    My current versions are:
    Product Version.................................. 5.2.178.0
    RTOS Version..................................... 5.2.178.0
    Bootloader Version............................... 4.0.206.0
Also is there a reason to upgrade the bootloader image?
On this webpage http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a00805f381f.shtml it shows the steps to upgrade WLC are :
This sequence is recommended for your WLC software upgrade:
Upload a backup of your controller configuration to a TFTP server.
Disable the 802.11a and 802.11b/g networks on your controller.
Upgrade the primary image on your controller.
Upgrade the boot image on your controller.
Note: This is a required step for upgrades to 4.1 on the WiSM, 3750G Wireless LAN Controller, and 4400 Series Controllers.
Re-enable the 802.11a and 802.11b/g networks on your controller.
I get the primary image is just going to be AIR-WLC4400-K9-6-0-196-0.aes.  But where do i download the Bootloader and it looks like i just do the same thing i did with the primary image.
I think I am missing something.
    Thanks

The boot software image consists of the controller boot kernel and           boot menu script. that is.. when you use the WLC for the first time. then you will be able to use this while entering the username, mobility information.. interfaces informations etc.. the Software version is the one which you issue CLI  commands...or even simple example wil be.. reboot the WLC and hit ESC.. the software that you access at this time will be boot loader..
    to upgrade the bootloader...

  • WiSM software upgrade

    Hi All,
We would required upgrade our WiSM from version 5.1.151.0 to 7.0.98.0. So as cisco says we will have to first upgrade the software from 5.1.151.0 to 5.2 then we will be uprading to 7.0.98.0. The current Bootloader version is 3.2.202.0. Should we have to upgrade the Bootloader too to 5.2.157.0 ER.aes ? If so which one should we upgrade first? first the Bootloader or the IOS?

    Pls Advice.
    Irshad.

    Hi All,
Thanks for all your support. last night we have successfully upgraded the WiSM to verion 7.0.98.0 .
Just wanna share some of the key points to be noted.
Existing System information on the WiSM
    Product Version             :           5.1.151.0
    RTOS Version               :           Linux-2.6.10_mvl401

    Existing System information on AP
    Product/Model Number               :          AIR-LAP1041N-E-K9
    Software Version                       :          12.4(23c)JA
There are two WCSs inside the wism. so we have to upgrade both seperatly. Also you cannot go directly to verson 7.0. you'll have to first upgrade the 5.1 to 5.2 then upgrade to 7.0. once you upgraded to intermediate version 5.2 wait for some time till all the APs get connected to WISm and download the new version. Once all APs got the latest version you can start upgarding to 7.0. you can check all APs image version by issuing sh ap image all command.
As Surendra mentioned you can follow his hyperlink for more information.
    Many thanks for all

  • WLC Code Upgrade

We just got a WLC 4002 with 3.2.150.10 software version. I have followed a procedure to upgrade and I know I need to follow this path 3.2.150.10->4.1->4.2.176.0->5.2
However, I have tried to transfer the 4.1.185 on my controller and I get a
TFTP Failure while storing in flash!
    error.
Has anybody experience this?? any adive?

    1. You could be either using a TFTP server that could not support file transfers greater than 32 MB (if this is the case, go to http://tftpd32.jounin.net/tftpd32_download.html and use TFTP32).
    2. Looks like you were upgrading the firmware without upgrading the Bootloader (ER).
Using the same process as the firmware, download and install Bootloader (in the follwoing order)
AIR-WLC4400-K9-4-1-171-0-ER.aes before you install firmware 4.1.185. Then
AIR-WLC4400-K9-4-2-61-0-ER.aes and install AIR-WLC4400-K9-4-2-61-0.aes. Finally, install Bootloader
AIR-WLC4400-K9-5-2-157-0-ER.aes before you install the final 5.x firmware you want.
Sorry, it's a very long process but it's the only way.
    Have you seen this documentation:

  • Error when upgrade Emergency Version

    Hello,
A customer not have any more access to Bootloader. When we power on the WLC, there is nothing on the console... He tells that he had try to upgrade from the bootloader menu (Manually Update Images), and I think that he had upgrade the bootloader with one of the two .aes file AIR-WLC4400-K9-5-2-157-0-ER.aes or AIR-WLC4400-K9-5-2-178-0.aes.
Is there a chance to recover the access to the WLC without return the WLC to CISCO support ?
    Rodolphe DUMESNIL

There is a process to reload the image to the controller manually but you will have to contact TAC for assistance.

    Hi,
    1. Is it OK to upgrade to SWLC3750K9-5-2-193-0.aes ? or do I need to go through 4.2 first ?
ANS - Yes you have to upgrade to 4.2 first and then to 5.2, here is the doc..
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn52xgmr1.html#wp233853
    2. Will that code upgrade the bootloader at the same time?
ANS - Yes, after upgrading the WLC code upgrade the boot loader.. the boot loader is 5.2.157 (BOOT)
    3. How can I make sure there is enough flash space on the WLC?
ANS - Dont worry.. we have enough flash!!
    4. Are there any special considerations to plan/prepare for?
ANS - Yes, please upgrade the WLC in a planned , scheduled maitenance window.
The DHCP issue is failure of associated clients to get an IP address with this message found in WLC debugging:

If I upgrade only to 15.0(2)SE, the switches are booting fine. I've tried alos other IOS versions above 15.0(2)SE, always same problem.
I think it has something to do with the current Bootloader:
ROM: Bootstrap program is Alpha board boot loader
BOOTLDR: C2960S Boot Loader (C2960S-HBOOT-M) Version 12.2(53r)SE, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc3)
The switches where the upgrade is not working, have all the above bootloader.
I have another switch of the same type with bootloader:
BOOTLDR: C2960S Boot Loader (C2960S-HBOOT-M) Version 12.2(55r)SE, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
Upgrading this one is no problem.
Version 15.0(2)SE1 is first version which are FIPS certified.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards
    Peter

I also tried c2960s-universalk9-tar.152-1.E3. I know that bootloader will upgrade automatically, but it doeas not upgrade when bootloader is
BOOTLDR: C2960S Boot Loader (C2960S-HBOOT-M) Version 12.2(53r)SE, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc3)
    message on console:
    Checking for Bootloader upgrade..
Boot Loader upgrade not required (Stage 2)
    %Software-forced reload
    see file Loop_2960S_15_02.txt attached
If I try a switch with already newer bootloader also same serie 2960S, upgrade is working with all this IOS releases.
    Bootloader was
BOOTLDR: C2960S Boot Loader (C2960S-HBOOT-M) Version 12.2(55r)SE, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
    see file Log2960S_15_02_OK.txt attached
This is why I think it has something to do with the bootloader already running on the switch. The first version which does not work with old bootloader is the first version with FIPS.

  • 3750x doesn't boot after upgrade to version15

Due to a problem with POE+ i have tried to upgrade the IOS to Version15.0.2SE2,  from 12.2.58. unfortunatly the Switch doesn't boot up anymore. It starts to decompress and install the IOS 2 Times, after the Second try it displays "unable to boot" and the switch goes in Bootloader-mode.
When i look at the version i See that bootloader is still the old version 12.2.58.
It seems that the bootloader doesn't geht upgraded and that's why the Switch can't Boot the new Image.
Is there anything i can do to Upgrade the bootloader seperatly?
    It's a 3750X48PF-S
    Many thanks
    Andy

This is a stack of 2 switches, both have the same problem and they are still running old image (as V15 doesn't work)

Does the error mean that I need a folder with that name with the files in it?
Do I need to archive the TAR file into the flash?

    Steven,
It looks as though you have an ap802-rcvk9w8-mx directory. Try creating the info folder under that directory and attempting the process again. Not sure if this will work for you but it won't harm anything either. If the process is looking for something within the info folder then, you may want to go ahead and reload(archive) that IOS image into the flash and see if the info folder (and any files within it) are installed.
    Hope this helps.

    any idea ?

I did the same thing, TAC support said they've had like 20 people complain about this. He said "there is no reason to update the boot code on a 3005 model. It is only needed on the 3015 and higher models to support RAM chips larger than 256MB." TAC support said DO NOT UPDATE the boot code on the 3005.
I suggested that they make note of this SOMEWHERE in their documentation. He provided me with some hidden low-level commands to erase the boot code, but as he said the 3005 doesn't need v4 of the boot code, and the boot code hasn't been tested for it, it's possible it would just break the concentrator. He then added the only way to 'fix' a damaged boot code is to replace the entire unit. He suggested we not touch it anymore, and leave the boot code running as-shipped.

    1.  Upgrade your boot loader to 1.9.0;
    2.  Upgrade your WLC firmware to 7.6.130.X
All instructions can be found HERE.   Use the same process to upgrade the bootloader and the firmware.  Each files need a complete appliance reboot before proceeding to the next file.

  • Resurecting dead MP3 pla

My Zen Micro died after i dropped it accidentally.
It hangs up during start up and just keeps showing "Creative". I can't even turn it of, i have to remove battery. None of the recovery tools works and it wont connect to PC ether.
    Any advice to fix it's

I believe on that player the firmware is on the dri've, so you're going to have to reload it. You said it was one of the original Xtras, so I'm guessing you have the original non-playsforsure firmware? If so, when you go to install the firmware on your new dri've, install the non-playsforsure firmware from this website. When you upgrade to PlaysForSure, it has to upgrade the bootloader, which is the code that first starts up the player and tells it to begin loading the firmware from the hard dri've. A firmware update that updates the bootloader failing is MUCH more likely to turn a player into a brick because that bootloader can be corrupted, and then the player can no longer boot up at all. So, stick with the PDE/non-P4S firmware if that's what you got, but if you already had P4S, I'd stick with it, just so you don't mess with the bootloader. That's the safest way to go about it.

  • Dead MP3 pla

I have a Creative Zen Xtra 30GB. Or had. It spontaneously died last weekend. I had it in my big satchel (it's cushioned in there) and I went to plug it in and it was stuck in recovery mode. I tried to reinstall the firmware (failure) to format the disk (harddisk problem), reboot, etc., but kept getting harddisk problem.
It's possible it got left on with an earplug in, so didn't shut itself off? Not likely, but possible.
I also noticed that my cord to recharge the battery has some exposed wire at the juncture, so isn't reliable now (and is possibly a hazard). But it was at least half-charged when it died.
I bought it only a year and a half ago, so it's outside the warranty period. I'm assuming it will be prohibiti'vely expensi've to repair it.
Is this normal? I thought these gadgets had a longer shelf life than this. And is there anything I can do with this, other than just go get a new one? (And maybe I should get something other than a Creative this time......)

  • Aironet 1100 Radio disabled at power up

Just setting up an Aironet 1100. Anytime I reboot (or if power is lost) it comes up with the "radio" disabled. I understand that this may be the default behavior before configuring but shouldn't it remember the settings so it reboots to the last state? I am sure it is not desired to have to reenable the radio on every AP after a power failure. What am I missing?
    Thanks. Bruce
Model info and software versions below:
    Product/Model Number: AIR-AP1121G-A-K9
    Top Assembly Serial Number: FTX1033V144
    System Software Filename: c1100-k9w7-tar.123-8.JEB1
    System Software Version: 12.3(8)JEB1
    Bootloader Version: 12.3(2)JA4

    Thanks Mike:
I had seen that info about 12.3(4)---but thought that applied to default behavior and not whether it would explain losing the enabled status at every reboot.
Should I try to upgrade the bootloader to a newer version (can that be done, where are the files?). Some of the terminology is confusing. I wasn't sure if that applied to my system (12.3(2)JA4) since that talks about 12.3(4)JA2 having the radio disabled by default and no SSID.
I actually had tried to upload the newest system software (from JEB1) but that failed.
Does the system software upgrade also update the bootloader version or are they independant?
    thanks for you help
    Bruce

  • Need help-WLC4402. Both primary and backup images not found

I didn't find any procedure to upgrade from bootloader.
    1. Run primary image (version Not Found)
    2. Run backup image (version Not Found) (active)
    3. Manually update images
    4. Change active boot image
    5. Clear Configuration

    Antonio,
The only way to recover this WLC is with the TAC - you need to up load specific files, only they will give them to you.
