680 TF fan spins at boot then stops

MSI N680GTX Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 680 2GB
I have two of these cards in my rig. On one of them at boot time, one of the fan spins a second then stops and does not spin again. What could be the problem?
I removed and inspected the card, in fact, both of them. The card and the heatsink are clean. I rid the inside of then case with a blower every two weeks. The fans spin freely, so I don't think the bearings/bushings are stuck. I re-seated the power cables and the 4-pin fan wires. So. I don't think the problem is power is not reaching the fans. But no joy.
What stumps me is the fan spins momentarily then quits.
Has anyone had this problem before?
Any opinion on what the problem may be is welcome.

    Hi ..

  • IPhoto 11 fan spinning very loudly

    Hi,
    I have a 2004 i7 15" Macbook Pro, when I startup iPhoto 11 (version 9.4.3) the fan spins really fast and I can hear it clearly. Also, the MBP will heat up and then reboot itself.
    So I just bought a 2013 i7 13" Macbook Air, same problem, the fan spins loudly and then MBA heats up.
    Can anyone help?
    Thx and cheers,

    That's what happens when an pp hangs or is in someother way distressed. Have you the same library on both machines?
    As a Test:
    Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
    Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • P55-GD65 boots for 1 second then stops

    My P55-GD65 worked lovely for over 2 years but now suddenly it does the following:
    It boots for 1sec and then stops. During the boot led6 (of the CPU phases) flashes on and the fans start spinning. This process repeats itself every 3 seconds.
    I did the following:
    checked the PSU by disconnecting the 24pin molex, shorting pins 15 and 16, and verifying all voltages.
    Disconnected the supply to all devices, except for the mobo, still the 1second boot behavior.
    Removed the 4 memory strips and placed only 1 in the 1st black bank
    Maybe worth nothing is that I never switch my comp off, but keep it in standby. Does this wear out some parts?
    Somebody an idea what this could be? Or how to debug this?

    I did:
    --clear cmos
    --took another memory strip
    --took another but old power supply with 20pins molex
    --removed video card
    all did not change the 1second boot behavior.
    I fear I have to give up the mobo. Is repair a viable way to go?
    No, probably best to replace the mainboard. If you buy the board from a computer shop, see if they will test the cpu and PSU for you if you buy the mainboard. Just to make sure.

  • System Does not Load, Fans Spins Non Stop, Blank Screen.

    So i have a Quad Core 3Ghz with the ATI Radeon X1900 512MB ram.
    I also have 2GB of internal ram and 2 more purchased 3rd party, totally of 4GB.
    I have had my computer for about 3 months now i am guessing since the first week it came out. About 2 weeks ago i noticed my monitor would go out, i thought it was the monitor. Up until it started when i would start up the computer. The Fans inside would non stop spin and the OS would not Load up the Screen was still Black and not turning on but the power light was on and fans spinning. it would do this to a few other monitors as well. I did apples Hardware Test, 5 times, the extended one and nothing found, no errors. it does it with Apples Ram that i got and with just the 3rd party ram as well with out the apple ram.
    I dont know if its the Graphics card because it seems to be cutting off the computer all together. when i am using it sometimes it will just go out on me. the computer light will be on like its on but the screen is out. i also was in mid chat with friends and the would not get my message hoping it was the Graphics card but it seems like it shuts down the whole system.
    So yes, i have to restart it about 6 or 7 times for it to get past that Fan Spinning Non Stop stage then it clicks into gear and works. Every morning it works like that. same routine for over a week now.
    Any clue as to what it would be? like the mother board or Power supply, i dont know how the power supply would stop the OS from loading and fans spinning but i am at a loss?

    Mac Pro came out in August '06. This is the 8-core model?
    The ATI Radeon can 'suffocate' if the air intakes on the cooling chamber of the graphics card become clogged with dust and unable to cool the card down. Needs to be cleaned from time to time.

    Some people use v. 2.1 of smcFanControl to force the fans to run slightly higher to insure that RAM and video card don't overheat.

  • Hard Drive stops spinning while booting

    Recently I've been noticing an issue with my 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) where when I start the computer up, the hard drive actually stops spinning while booting. In a quiet environment, you can hear the hard drive spin, but then slow down and go silent, not making any noise at all.  It will hang at the Apple logo and spinning gear for about a minute, then the hard drive will start up again and finish booting. It's very strange, and it only happens while the computer is starting up.
    Booting into Verbose Mode does not yield any answers.  I booted to the Lion Recovery partition (which, by the way, boots normally) and used Disk Utility to check the Macintosh HD partition, which did not find any issues with the partition. I have reinstalled Lion, which would temporarily resolve the issue before acting up again, and I've done a full erase and install, again, temporarily resolving the issue before acting up again. I don't know if the drive is failing, even though there are no indicators that it is in the failing stages, or if this is a Lion issue, because this issue was never present when the computer was running Snow Leopard or Leopard. has anyone encountered this issue, or know of a fix??

    In an update to this post:  I have replaced the hard drive with a new Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB 7200RPM hard drive with a fresh install of Mountain Lion.  The hard drive worked fine for the first few days, and now the same exact issue as before has returned.  Since it looks like its not the OS, nor the hard drive, could it possibly be the hard drive cable?  Everything else works fine, its jsut during start-up.

  • Won't boot - no display, solid white light.  Fans spin up and gets loud.

    Hi Everyone,
    I have a Core Duo 20" that won't boot. The display won't light up, and the white light stays on the whole time. No chime. Fans start slow, but then gradually gets very loud after over the course of a few seconds.
    I've began taking it apart. One suspect area is the DC/DC Inverter board. The POWER_GOOD line is only showing 0.16V. Most power supplies uses signaling between 3V and 5V so I'm suspecious of this 0.16V POWER_GOOD signal.
    Can someone help chime in (no pun intended), or verify the POWER_GOOD signal voltage of an early 2006 iMac Core Duo (2105)?
    THANK YOU!

    No, sounds like when you dropped it an cracked the screen it may have also damaged the logic board or the repair person damaged a cable.

  • Spinning a wheel, randomly stops and then takes you to another frame.

    I would like to be able to spin a wheel in flash, this wheel has 8 sections to it split up equally, it spins for a random amount of time, 3 - 7 seconds and then stops. the section which lands on the marker is the result and will take you to a specific frame. Also i would like it when it stops to gradually slow down however this is not vital.
    this code works for just rotating a wheel but i want to know how to randomly stop it and how to take it to another frame.
    onClipEvent (enterFrame){
    this.ang=ang+0.01;
    _alpha=190*Math.sin(this.ang)+190;
    _rotation++;
    _xscale=260*Math.sin(this.ang)+1900;
    i do not know a lot of coding, so do not use complicated words and if you could post how to do this it would help alot.
    thanks

    var obj:Object = {};

  • HP 2510p fans spin non-stop on system resume

    I was having difficulty with my hp 2510p laptop fans spinning at maximum after system resume.  This makes for a undesirably noisy laptop.
    Searching online I found users of redhat/fedora experiencing the same issues.  It seems like is a kernel issue that on the link was fixed with the update to 3.9.2-200.fc18.x86_64.  I am running kernel 3.19.2-1-ARCH and still experience this issue.  If others have this problem, the workaround they posted about changing the values of `/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/cur_state` from 1 to 0 worked for me (did not test on system resume but manually changing them decreased the fans to a normal level).
    Is there a better fix to this issue?  As my kernel version is more up-to-date than the one in which the redhad/fedora users experienced the correction, I would think I am missing a more simple step that should correct this.  Creating a script to revert these values back to 0 seems like a bit of a hack rather than actually addressing the problem.

  • Replaced Fan, Won't Boot

    Hi, I have a T60p in which I just replaced the fan/heatsync because it was getting noisy.  After reassembling the laptop, when I press the power button, the fan spins up for 3 seconds and the lights indicating hard drive function and so on light up. Then, after 3 seconds the fan stops spinning and the only light that remains on is the one that looks like a Z with a circle around it - nothing is ever displayed on the screen.  I have to hold the power button to make the Z light turn off and when I do I hear the hard drive click as if it is halting.
    I have put the original fan/heatsync back in to see if the new fan caused the problem, but the same thing happens.
    I have used thermal compound and followed all the directions, several times.  I have worked as a computer tech for many years and have replaced the fan/heatsync on many laptops without problems.  This is the first time I've ever had a problem like this.  Any help is appreciated!!  Thank you
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Something else is obviously wrong here. I'd try reseating any connectors you unplugged, if that doesn't help, remove the battery and ac power and cycle the power button ten time holding for a few seconds each time, then hold for 30 seconds on the last. The attach only ac power and see if it will boot. If you still get no post, next step would be to remove all the drives and cards, if it still won't post, try removing the ram and installing one chip in each slot, test one at a time.
    Also look at the power jack where it's connector plugs into the motherboard. removing the fan could loosen this connection. It's not common, but check it.
    If it still won't post, you may have a failed part on your system board. Static electricity can damage these parts when they are disassembled, but lets hope it's something simple.

  • Emac tried to start then stopped, finally after 3 attempts it started

    After a hard drive failure i run my emac on an external hard drive through a fire wire.
    That worked OK till yesterday when it tried to start but after a few seconds of the normal fan noise and before the screen lit up, it stopped. I hit the switch again and it did the same thing 3 times but on the 4th attempt it started but a white screen came on and told me to type "mac-boot" and hit return.
    It finally started.
    The external hard drive was still running OK at the time it had stopped, it was internally that it had stopped.
    I took the back off the emac and vacuumed the dust from inside and after that it has since started normally every time though it seems slower to start, but I could be mistaken about that as I can't now remember noticing how long it took to start before.
    Someone said the problem could be the power supply failing.
    Is there any way for me to diagnose what exactly is wrong, since an emac power supply is not same as a PC power supply?
    Could a PC power supply be modified to replace the emac power supply as I have a failed PC with a good power supply I could use if it would work?
    Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Ann

    Hello and thanks for your reply.
    I neglected to mention that at the time of the hard disk failure I put a new hard disk inside too with the intention of using it as a back up to the External Hard Drive but I found it was easier in the end to get another external hard drive and now I use Time Machine to back up on to that 2nd external hard drive every few days.
    I disconnect the 2nd external hard drive when I'm not backing up data on to it.
    Most of the time when I boot up the emac it somehow knows to go straight to the 1st External Hard Drive instead of the Internal Hard Drive but occasionally it will go to the Internal Hard Drive and when it does that I have to go to System Preferences and then to Startup Disk and actually select the External Hard Drive icon and that's what I had to do every time when it was having that weird starting then stopping phase, ie, every time during the starting then stopping phase, when it did start it went to the Internal Hard Drive even after I would go into Startup Disk and select External Hard Drive it would start on the Internal Hard Drive, so in the end I didn't bother trying any more and I just connected to the internet through the Internal Hard Drive until I took the back off and vacuumed the dust out and ever since I did that it's been running normally, ie, it's always selecting the External Hard Drive again and running at what seems to be normal speed for everything too.
    I just don't know why it went into that starting then stopping phase.
    When it was in the starting then stopping phase the internal fan noise would stop but the little white light next to the DVD door would stay lit up so it was definitely getting some power from somewhere but it was failing to go on and boot up because the power to the internal fan had failed ie, I could clearly hear the fan stop only 3 or 4 seconds after hitting the start button.
    I've just had a look at the capacitors that you suggested and they look perfect, like new in fact, they have a shiny metallic top with a + indented in the top and they are flat and they show no sign of a dried up liquid or any bubbling up anywhere.
    Anyway, your reply was helpful since you ruled out the Power Supply and the capacitors, so thank you for those.
    The friend who advised me how to get going again after the initial hard disk failure, ie, via the External Hard Drive connected by fire wire, did warn me not to touch anything in the back that wasn't directly related to changing the hard drive but thanks for the heads up anyway.
