"A graphics problem has been detected" Macbook Pro screen white with horizontal red stripes

This issue arrived out of no where. I'll be using my Macbook Pro then all of a sudden the screen starts glitching and i can't control anything so I'm forced to power off my computer. When I turn it back on the screen will display the Apple logo with a white screen and horizontal red stripes running through the screen (as pictured below). I have to keep shutting down the computer and powering it back on until it asks me to reset my Filevault password then it might work.
After I reset my password it finally restarts and appears to work with the image below displayed on the screen. I spent over 2000 dollars on this laptop, I shouldn't have to wonder if my laptop will work long enough to get something done or have to keep resetting it for days and be computerless. This is crazy! I hope Apple starts paying attention to this issue as I've seen multiple posts about this issue coming for other owners of MacBook Pros from 2011.

The logic board is faulty and will have to be replaced.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

    Problem:
Every few hours I get one or sometimes multiple errors where the OS pops a small dialog box
Sometimes I am in a web browser, sometimes playing a game, Garage band, sometimes in email, it doesn't seem to matter what is happening. The problem comes randomly and once it does, it freezes the UI solid until it resets the graphics card (or something like that). I was playing Legend of Grimrock and the thing happened, and the game created an error report stating "Graphics hardware encountered an error and was reset: 0x0000000e"
    What I have tried:
    SMC Reset
    PRAM reset
    diskutil check disk (ok)
    diskutil fix permissions (ok)
    apple diagnostics, no problem found.
Apple support chat session (no resolution)
    Question:
Is this  a hardware problem where I should just go get my money back and/or get a new computer?
If not a hardware problem, is there some well understood fix for this?
    Frustrated and ready to punt,
    Paul

The problem I observed was not always directly related to an app being run. It would also happen with interaction between windows (just clicking from mail to a browser, for example). When this occurred, the popup dialog would show (shown in OP) and the corresponding freezes for a few seconds while it recovered.
One time I had a crash in an app was during a game where the same issue happened, and the game shut down with a crash dump. As noted above, the game itself reported the error as "Graphics hardware encountered an error and was reset: 0x0000000e". This was in the crash dump report. So here, the cards saw an error, and the OS reset them out from under a running game, which objected strenuously and asserted down like it was supposed to do.
So I disagree about it being a software problem. I suspect there truly is a graphics card problem in this case. The frequency of the trouble went from once every few days, to every day, and then to every few hours during a 2 week span, so the trajectory was heading in the wrong direction.

  • MacBook pro screen blury with a splash of colors starting in the middle

Hi, I am a new Mac user, and I've had my macbook pro for 6 months now. Yesterday, when I started the computer, the graphics were blurry and then there was a splash of colors (rainbow of colors) covering the middle to upper part of the screen. The rest of the screen was blurry and a bit blinking.
I had been moving around with the laptop the whole but I cannot figure out what happened or what I can do to fix this.
    Please help. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Go to System Preferences>Universal Access and be sure the Zoom is turned off and the Enhance Contrast slider is all the way to the left. Sometimes UA features get turned on accidentally with disconcerting results.
Also, if you can, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test. You may get a clue in the form of an error code, which could indicate a hardware problem. You should still be under the one year warranty, which should cover whatever is wrong. If UA has not been turned on accidentally, you might have a graphics chip problem or possibly a display problem which Apple would need to fix.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro Screen blink with Genius bar. What should i expect?

    Hello!,
I have to say in my almost 20 years of being a mac user i've never had a problem with any of my mac's. I now have a minor issue with a brand new Macbook Pro that i bought on New years day. The screen has an odd blink on the upper 1/3 portion of the screen. So i've decided to make an appointment with my local Apple store to show it to a genius. I was actually able to capture the blink on video so that i can show it to the genius.
Now my concern. If its a software issue, thats fine, i'll wait for a patch. But i feel weird about Apple fixing the machine. I feel like the laptop will lose its "magic". The receipt said there is a 14 day return policy, i guess im over that otherwise i would have paid the restocking fee to get a brand new one. Do you think I am just being dumb?

    Rany,
This is a support forum. Your question isn't really something that anyone that here can answer. Only someone that knows you will be able to say if you're being "dumb"
Of course it's a bummer when you get a brand new computer... especially a high end one like a MacBook Pro... and you find you have a problem with it. Apple's service has always been among the best. If you do have a hardware issue... bring it in and have them take care of it for you. If you get it back and discover there is something more wrong with it than when you brought it in, then address it. I wouldn't not get it serviced for fear of it losing its "magic". If you're just slightly over your return period... there's no harm is asking them if they would be willing to replace it. There's no guaranty that they will, but they have the flexibility to do so. The worst case scenario is that they fix the one you have.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your computer is not booting like normal.  I'd like you to do the two processes below, first starting with the SMC reset, followed by resetting the NVRAM.

    Thanks!

This log is showing an input/output error with the hard disk. It means that your hard disk is damaged.
If you have a backup of your files, I recommend you to install a new hard drive. It can be done at a reseller or Apple Store, but it's cheaper to do this yourself. Any 2'5" SATA hard drive will work, so you can have a look for hard disks at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

  • Solution - Battery error is detected. Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace

I own a T61 7658 I bough on 2008, it worked great with the default power settings until October 22nd I decided to change my power profile to MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE.
Next day I received on Message Center...
10/23/2010 - Battery health is critical. With the current system settings and a full charge, your battery can provide approximately 3.0 hours of use. A new battery could provide up to an estimated 5.5 hours.
I kept using the Laptop with the Max performance until...
11/12/2010 - Battery error is detected. Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one.
I have used IBM/Lenovo  for years and even had used batteries for 5 years without a single issue.
I have read many posts of people having the same problem not only with T61s, but many other Lenovo models, and also read posts of Lenovo's administrators suggesting this is normal and justifying that batteries should be good for at least 12 months and after that we are on own, basically meaning we should be thankful in name of our own safety that we had that battery protection and we must replace it at our own cost and forget about it.  That is a very easy way out, isn’t it.
But certainly, not only batteries with more than 12 months are failing, even new batteries are and have been replaced with multiple exchange programs posted by Lenovo in their website just as in http://download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/batt/082009/LandingPage.html. and also in multiple MIGR battery replacement campaigns available to all online as well.
Good thing here is that Lenovo has recognized the problem and has exchange the batteries still under warranty and also few of the batteries without warranty limiting to some serial numbers on the MIGR battery replacement campaigns, but the bad side is that Lenovo is leaving behind other clients like me and many others not being selected for replacement.  But I’m sure we all have a good battery but turned useless due to the Lenovo programmed safety temperature limits in the power manager and the battery board.  Please let me explain.
This is my conclusion.  There is nothing wrong with used or new batteries or their cells in 99% of the cases, I'm sure my battery is okay although is being turned useless by the battery protection feature on my T61.
Lenovo must recognize the problem is the settings they have programmed on the power manager and battery protection board. It is very understandable that when users select a Power Scheme that demands higher amounts of power to generate better performance on the system this also demand additional power generating heat on battery and on the power supply as the computer is running at full performance, just as happens on my ipod when watching video, or in my kid’s R/C truck when running continuously and will happen with any other battery powered device.
Therefore any scheme requiring performance is generating heat and is tripping the battery protection and this is not a client’s fault, as are we just using an available scheme provided on our Lenovo system. If the battery protection is not calibrated to support this power demand, then there is a poor design/testing of the capabilities of the system and the battery protection parameters that instruct the battery to save itself from a fire or burning … which is understandable.
The bad side is that there is not possible reset option for the end users, the only option is to buy a new battery at our own cost after the 12 months of warranty, when the cause of the problem is originated in the computer system design settings and can happen at any time, that is way, the system warned me, as in:
10/23/2010 - Battery health is critical. With the current system settings and a full charge, your battery can provide approximately 3.0 hours of use. A new battery could provide up to an estimated 5.5 hours.
The computer is saying! At maximum performance, You are using too much power, and my battery will last just 3 hrs (9 cells on my system) instead of the 5.5 hrs that should last. But not only the running time was reduced, the heat on the power supply system and Battery was also increased due to the higher power demand, the battery can not handle the demand and protect itself to prevent fire or damage.
So who has to pay for this?  Can Lenovo do something about it? For us client and for future clients?  This not a matter of having or not having warranty, this can happen at any time in any computer.
I'm writing this hoping to be heard and supported and I hope LENOVO provides a satisfactory solution to the issue.  I'm not going to say will never buy Lenovo again I already did, I invested my money on Lenovo and with warranty or not I'm looking forward to get a decent response.
Lenovo must change the parameters for tripping battery protection probably handled at BIOS level, and to provide a reset feature to all "locked" batteries there is many people that has lost at least one battery, some other more than that.  Since even if we get a replacement, the chances  the issue will continue is there, as long as I select a high power demand scheme the problem sooner or later will be back.   Even car makers support their clients beyond the warranty if they detect that the issue compromises safety and their reputation.  Fix it.

  • Small MacBook Pro screen scratch: Are they normal for a 2+ year old computer?

    Hello,
I am writing about a topic that may have been mentioned around on these forums multiple times, scratches on the MacBook Pro screen display. In August 2010, I bought my 2010 MacBook Pro and since then I have been very careful with the screen by avoiding to touch it and clean it around every two to three months. However, today, I was cleaning my MacBook Pro screen and a way I examine the screen cleaness is by placing my iPhone 4S LED flash light illuminating the screen which shows the smudges and dirt that the screen has. Unfortunately, today I found 2 scratches on my MacBook Pro screen which run horizontally, these scratches are very small at around 1mm in lenght. They are not noticeable when the screen is on, which is why the scratch may have gone undetectable up until today when I used my iPhone's LED.
Off course I am a little dismayed because through all my carefullness when I clean the screen (I use a gentle up and down motion to clean the screen), still I was not able to prevent a screen scratch. When I close my MacBook Pro, I still use the plastic material that came on top of the keyboard to avoid any contact of the screen and the keys; I always shake that plastic material before placing it on top of the keyboard . So here's my question is it normal for a almost 2.5 year old computer to have two small scratches as the one I am speaking about.
I did find the screen bezel at Amazon and I may buy one as a spare and store it in a secure place and use it if there are more pronounced screen scratches.
Thanks in advance for any answers and suggestions to my predicament.

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro. I do not take any care to put anything in between the keyboard and screen... I just use it as it was made to be used. I don't take any particular care when cleaning the screen... often, it's just rubbing off a fingerprint with my sleeve or the tail of my shirt. No scratches whatsoever.
How your screen got scratched is not something anyone here can answer. We can speculate, at most, but that's not likely to be very useful. I'd recommend not putting anything between the screen and keyboard when closing the machine. That could very well be the cause of the problem, if something got stuck to that material when you closed it between keyboard and screen.
Thanks for the suggestion... I will apply these changes to my MacBook Pro's storing procedure and remove the plastic out of the equation. What bugs me is the fact that because the scratch is 1mm long and horizontal it tells me that a force dragged the material. The only thing I can recollect is when one time a family member accidentally passed close to my MacBook Pro with his headphone jack disconnected and hanging, unfortunately the metal part scraped over the screen but there were not scratches to detect. The impact area as I recollect is close to the scratch but the force of the impact and travel distance was not something as forceful to create such damage. Maybe the plastic is the culprit which makes me feel disappointed because I was using it to avoid problems rather than creating one. Anyways, I think I'll buy a spare bezel for my MacBook and in case there are more future and pronounced scratches, I will send it to repairs to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and give them the bezel.

You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

  • A problem with the cooling system has been detected

I bought a new computer not to long ago, I've had it for almost a month now. It runs fine, and I've had no problems until not too long ago. I was playing a game, and I got a random error message: "A problem with the cooling system has been detected. Please turn off the computer immdiately, and return it for service." I don't understand how or why this came up, and I don't have any money to return it for any type of repairs. After I got this message, I left my computer off for about an hour. All seems well so far. Any suggestions?

  • Pro NAS ix4-200r "failure has been detected" but what type of failure?

I have a StorCentre Pro NAS ix4-200r that is reporting "Data is available, but a failure has been detected." however the Event log doesn't actually tell me what type of failure was detected.
In the settings, disks show normal. I've been through the manual and every setting panel and there is no hint to what the error actually refers to.
How can I identify the actual fault? Does the message mean that data corruption was detected? That a drive is failing? That SMART status triggerred an alert? Does it check external drives? Is there a way to turn up the logging level and kick off an integrity check / diagnostic?
Moving forward I either need to take it offline and check each drive individually using something like Seatools (which won't help if it is simply data corruption), or format the NAS and start over (which won't help if there is a failing drive). Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is odd that sdc and sdb are out of order, but sdd 3 should be the hard drive in slot 1.
If you really wanted to test this, you could remove the drive and then run the dump log again and check with the same process.
