A question about using SQL*Plus

script:
spool c:/abc.bin
select * from abc
when I press ENTER, the result will be orderly shown on the screen.
In fact, I want to input "spool off" to save the result into the file, but I have to wait for the screen finishing its showing.
Which command can I use to directly save the result into the file without showing it on the screen?

Create a .SQL script file with following:
set termout off
spool c:\abc.bin
select * from abc
spool offand then run it like this:
SQL> @your_script.SQLNote that you can do many more formatting commands in your scripts than just shown - which you use depends upon what exactly this output is for.

The help doc says we can use SQL*Plus commands. So I open it from the SQL*Plus menu item under Tools. After I gave the installed SQL*Plus location and file name, SQL*Plus was opened by itself asking for a password. The question is are all SQL*Plus commands are supported/will be supported in Raptor? Thanks.

  • Limitation in using sql *plus as a database for applications

    dear experts;
I would like to know all, what are some of the major limitations in using sql*plus as your database in designing application besides the fact the user-interface is not friendly enough..and google is not producing relevant answers to my questions by the way unfortunately

    user13328581 wrote:
I know about the drivers, I just need an IDE very similar to PL/SQL developer that will give me an opportunity to create the tables and their relationships and perform other DDL tasks that is why initially i was just wondering whether it is okay to utilize sql*plus for all that...SQLPlus can process any valid sql statement. Actually, it will pass anything that is not a sqlplus command to the database to be processed. The database will process any valid sql statement and pass the result back to the client to do with as the client sees fit - the client being sqlplus in this case.
Which is exactly what SQL Developer does. You say you want something "very similar to PL/SQL developer ". Why not SQL Developer itself?
It sounds like you continue to confuse the database with the client application. ("what are some of the major limitations in using sql*plus as your database ...", "I need an oracle database which can be integrated with visual studio ")
The database has no user interface at all. It accepts connection requests from clients, processes sql statements (or pl/sql blocks) passed from those clients and returns results to those clients. Those clients could be sqlplus, SQL Developer, Toad, Visual Basic, Access, Excel, or any number of other products -- all connecting to the same database at the same time, to do whatever they are programmed to do. You want to develop an app in visual studio? Be my guest. You want to use SQL Developer to create the tables, etc, needed by the app? Go right ahead. They are not mutually exclusive. You want to use sqlplus as well? Go ahead, it's the same database, just a different client app.

  • Question about using EM on machine with 2 active instances

    Good morning,
As a self training exercise I've created 2 instances on one machine. The machine is both, server and client. I'm running Windows XP SP2, Oracle 11gR2 (as seen in my user handle) and using IE7 for EM.
The URL for the first instance is:
https://Oracle2Day1.john.local:1158/emThe URL for the second instance is:
https://Oracle2Day1.john.local:5500/emIf I log into one and only one instance then everything works just fine.
When I log into the first instance, then log into the second instance and, switch back to the tab of the first instance, I find myself back at the "User name/Password/Connect As" page, I don't even get the page saying that I've been logged out of the first instance.
Additionally, if at that point, I switch back to the tab of the second instance, I find myself at the "User name/Password/Connect As" page for that instance too.
Basically, whenever I log into both instances and switch from one instance tab to the other, it brings me back to the log in page for both instances.
If I log into a single instance and do not attempt to log into the second instance then everything works fine.
Any ideas as to why I cannot be logged into both instances at the same time ? (I can be logged in both instances simultaneously using SQL*Plus without any problems) Is there something I can do to correct this behavior or is this "normal" ?
    Thank you for your help,
    John.

    Hello Amardeep,
    >
If he opens the 2 EM consoles in 2 separate browsers, shouldn't it work ?
    >
I tried that. I even tried different browsers and had all kinds of problems. Nothing worked but, in order to tell you about the problems I would run into when doing that, I tried it again using IE7 and, this time, I made sure I had a separate process for each copy of IE7 (not just a separate thread)....
    LOW and BEHOLD... it worked!!!
I can do whatever I want in both instances without any problems... smooth as silk.
I spent a day and half trying to figure out what the problem was. The strange thing was that when I had just finished installing the second instance, everything worked fine. I could be in both instances at the same time. After I rebooted the machine, it would no longer work... so I started looking everywhere for the reason why it broke... I'm guessing that when I rebooted my machine, (which is not particularly fast and, less so when there are two instances running), I tried too soon (it takes my machine over 30 minutes just to initialize both instances) and that contributed to all of the problems I experienced. I probably did not try two separate browser processes before each instance had time to fully initialize.
    Problem solved.
    Solution:
*1*. Make sure the instance is fully initialized (wait until CPU drops to 1 to 4% and stays there for a few minutes)
*2*. Access each instance using a different browser process (make sure the browser window isn't simply another thread of a previously started browser instance)
    Amardeep, thank you :)
    John.

  • Can v read a client text file using SQL*plus??

We have a requirement like this: We need to read a text file to find spelling mistakes. Problem is the file has to be always moved to the DB machine, which is a Linux box and then run a stored procedure which uses UTL_FILE. Now in order to show the spelling mistakes of the file the user will have to again copy the file with the spelling mistakses (output file) from Linux to Windows.
Is there a way to do it using SQL*Plus, where the text file is in the client machine???? Then users don't have to copy the file to and from the Linux box.

SQL*Plus is a client software and whatever code you write using SQL*Plus, it ultimately run on the server. So the answers to your question is "no".

  • Question about PL/SQL Function in report

Hi all. I have a (basic) question about using a PL/SQL function in a report. In my report page I have an item (PL/SQL function) that has the following syntax:
    return username from t1
    where username like 'Le%'
I reference this item in an email process. Ideally this function would return all usernames that begin with 'Le' in the drafted email; however, its not looping so I'm only getting a return on the first name.
I have a few books on PL/SQL but I'm not exactly sure where to start - I imagine there is a loop process I need to integrate into the function but, like I said, I'm not sure.
I would have posted this to the PL/SQL forum but also wanted some feedback on whether or not using this method is the best way forward. Essentially I have a table with usernames and just want to send email messages based on some simple logic.
    Thanks!
    Len

    Hi Sergio,
First, it's an honor to have you reply to my post. Thanks!
    To be more specific,
T1 is a table containing the results from a user security scan. Username is a column in this table containing user names. What I have done is create a page in HTML DB with the following elements:
    1. An 'Item' containing the PL/SQL function that is hidden. The purpose of this Item is to generate information from T1 that meets the simple logic parameters - in this case, the user names that begin with "Le". I have called this Item P145_TT
    2. A 'Process' containing references to HTMLDB_MAIL. The 'Process' looks similar to this:
    HTMLDB_MAIL.SEND(
    P_TO => '[email protected]',
    P_FROM => 'Anon Email Account',
P_BODY => 'Note: This message was automatically generated. Do not attempt to reply to this email.
These are the users that begin with Le: '||:P145_TT||' ',
    P_SUBJ => 'Summary');
    3. A 'Button' to submit the process and (hopefully) send the message containing all users that adhere to the logic in the function.
    4. If I use 'return username from t1...' I will get a username generated, but like I said previously, it only gives me the first and does not loop.

  • Question about using TVARV in an ABAP program

Hello gurus, Im sorry about the silly question.
I have a question about using TVARV in an ABAP program.
A program is presenting a problem and I think that in this code:
    SELECT SIGN OPTI LOW HIGH
      FROM TVARV
      INTO TABLE R_1_163431035_VELOCIDADE
      WHERE  NAME = '1_163431035_VELOCIDADE'
      AND    TYPE = 'S'.
      IF ZMM001-VELOCIDADE_B   IN R_1_163431035_VELOCIDADE AND
          ZOPERADORAS-OPERADORA = 'ABCD' AND
          ZMM001-MATERIAL       IN R_1_163431035_PRODUTO.
      ELSE.
      ENDIF.
What happens is that the value "ZMM001-SPEED" B not exist in "R1_163431035_VELOCIDADE" but the program executes commands under the IF and not under the ELSE, as I imagine it would work. Is this correct ?
I am new to ABAP programming, but I have a lot of XP in other programming languages and this makes no sense to me.
Anyone know where I can find some documentation of the use of "TVARV" in ABAP programs?
I search the Internet if other programmers use TVARV this way, but found nothing, which leads me to think that was a quick and dirty solution that used here.
If this is a bad way to program, what would be the best way?
    Regards
    Ronaldo.

    Hi Ronaldo,
But in this case, the range is not empty, there are 17 records, in this way.:
For the column "SING" all values are "E"
It means that the result is false if ZMM001-VELOCIDADE_B has the same value as one of the 17 records (E = exclude).
For instance, if it has value 'C' and one of 17 records matches C, then the result is false.
The "IF" with "IN" using "TVARV" as used in the program of the post above has the same behavior of a selection screen?
Yes, the same behavior as the selection criterion to be exact. You can press the help key in the complex selection dialog for more info.
I know it's a silly and very basic question, but other language that I used, only the SQL has the "IN" operator, but I think they work in different ways, so I would like to understand how it works in ABAP.
Not silly ;-). Yes they work differently.

  • Can I use SQL *Plus 11.1.0.7.0 to connect Oracle Express 10g

    Hi guys:
I download "Oracle 11g ODAC *11.1.0.7.20* with Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio", trying to use SQL *plus to see if configuration is alright.

    Hi EdStevens,
Following the instructions in previous post, I can connect with SQL plus (the database is on the same box* as your sqlplus client); I just enter sqlplus in windows console.
In addition, i am still curious about how SQL plus connect to a remote* box. Could you shed more light on that?SQLPlus connects to a remote db the same way any other app does. After all, sqlplus is just another client app.
It's all in the connect string. So say, at a command prompt you enter
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@mydbso in the above example, 'scott' is the user, 'tiger' is the password, and 'mydb' is the tns service name. Of course, the OS passes all that to sqlplus as a command line parameter. Internally, sqlplus makes a call to the tns layer and passes it the connect information it has. TNS will take a look at the tnsnames.ora file and find an entry for 'mydb', and from there it will get the name or ip address of the host server, a port number, and a service name. That information will be passed on down the network stack for routing. (If a name was provided instead of an ip address, the OS network stack will use whatever means are at its disposal - a hosts file, a dns lookup, or whatever, to get an ip address). The request will arrive at the specified host and placed on the specified port. If everything was configured correctly, there will be an oracle listener process monitoring that port. It will pick up the request and see if it recognizes the service name. If it does, it will spawn a user server process on a different port to complete the connection, then get out of the way and continue listening for more requests.
This is how it happens most of the time. There are a lot of other variants, but that's the gist of it.
More information can be found in the fine documentation at tahiti.oracle.com.

    Not as such.
Give the AppleTV units unique names and also enable Airplay password in settings with unique passwords for each teacher.

  • Question about using new battery in old Powerbook

I have a pre-intel Powerbook G4, and the battery is pretty much toast (lasts about 15 minutes now). I have ordered a new battery for it, and I have this question about using it:
Am I smarter to keep the new strong battery out of the PB most days (as I usually work with it plugged in at home) and just pop it in when I know I will be out surfing on batteries? Or is it just as good living in my laptop 24/7 and only occasionally being called upon to do its job?
    Current bad Battery Information below:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1144
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1115
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12387
    Cycle Count: 281
    thanks folks, Shereen

Hi, Shereen. Every Powerbook battery wants to be used — drained and then recharged — at least every couple of weeks. If you've always used your Powerbook on AC power nearly all the time, and not followed that pattern of discharging and recharging the battery every week or two, it's possible that your use habits have shortened the lifespan and prematurely diminished the capacity of your old battery. Of course it's also possible that your battery is merely old, as a battery's capacity also diminishes with age regardless of how it's used. You didn't say how old the battery is in years, so this may or may not be an issue. I mention it only because it can be an issue.
For general information on handling a battery for the longest possible lifespan, see this article. My advice on the basis of that article and long experience reading these forums is that it would be OK to do as you propose, but I doubt that you'd derive any significant benefit from it. You would still want to be sure of putting the new battery through a charge/discharge cycle every week or two, even if you didn't have a reason to use the Powerbook away from home or your desk, because sitting unused outside the computer is just as bad for a battery as sitting unused inside it. And you should never remove the battery from your computer when it's completely or almost completely discharged and let it sit that way any longer than a day or two.

  • Cannot connect to database using SQL*Plus

Hi, I have Oracle 10g XE installed in my labtop and I cannot connect using SQL*Plus.
I can connect using the broser User Interface though, which I was able to do after doing the following procedure to change the password of the sys account:
    -     open a command prompt
    -     - type sqlplus
    -     On the “Enter user-name” line, type /as sysdba
    -     On the SQL> prompt, type alter user sys identified by NewPassword;
But the thing is that even though I am able to connect using sys/NewPassword from my browser UI, I dont get the same result when doing it using the SQL prompt.
What I am trying to do is this:
    SQL> connect sys/NewPassword
Then I get first a warming saying that I need to use either sysdba or sysoper to connect to the system account, but neither of those work.
Can anyone advice me on this matter?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for that.
I run the command to list the usernames on the database and I got SYS and SYSTEM in the list. But again, when I try to use SYS with a password that I know is working because I can access it through the browser UI, it doesnt work. It seems like this sys is different to the sys I used in the UI.
I dont know if I am explaining myself correclty... In the Browser UI I use sys, and a password and I get connected to the sys account. However, if I try to use the same sys.password combination from my sqlplus prompt, I get error messages
Does this make sense at all?
