A simple upgrade quest

First my system specs
(System Info) [CPU: Intel Pentium 4 (CPU-Speed: 3.20 GHz)]-[Memory: 023MB]-[Video Card: nVidia GeForce 6800 GT]-[Sound Card: SB Audigy Audio [A400]]-[Resolution: 280x024x32bpp 75Hz]-[OS: WinXP Professional 5. Service Pack 2 (Build #2600)]
As you can see, I currently have an SB Audigy(Gamer). I have been muling over whether to buy an X-Fi Xtrememusic card or not.
I simply want to know what would be suggested if I was to upgrade to it. Should I remove drivers, should I reinstall games, should I do anything besides just switching the card and installing its drivers.
And besides that, I would be interested in knowing how the performance in games may or may not be affected by the upgrade.
Thanks to anything anyone has to say.

Have you read any of the threads on this board? I too was in your position.. upgrading from an audigy 2 though... You wold be nuts to even think of getting yourself into this mess.
Seriously... think of the axiety that you would have if you spent >00$ on something that does not work now... or may not work ever properly.
I would recommend getting an inexpensi've OEM Audigy 2 ZS (Not the value... it does not do hardware acceleration). Though this card is also plagued with issues... At least you will be able to install it and use it for the most part. Right now the X-FI is not prime time... it is still a beta card that has been released to the public way before it should have.
I almost gave in to the temptation on the 5th when they came out with new drivers.. but almost everyone said it did not help that much.
I am suspecting that there was a manufactoring issue... Majority of the cards are having the issue and small few are not.. It weird how some say no issues and other are plagued with the same exact setup. Does not make sense... I would give it to February to make your decsion... that should exhaust most of the old inventory... and hopefully newer revsions of the x-fi hardware will be out on the shelves addressing most issues.
So.. i think you should be able to answer your own question...

• XI3.0 simple upgrade - Few questions

Hi Gurus,
I ran into some issues with my upgrade to XI3.0 from XIR2 SP4. I was using a simple upgrade method.
1- It seemed like the upgrade was going fine throughout. I stopped all the services before upgrade (including Tomcat). When prompted for tomcat5.5 ports, I used the default values though the XIR2 tomcat uses those ports. I thought it should not be a problem because XIR2 tomcat is stopped anyways. After the install, I noticed that the cmc and infoView folders in tomcat55/work/catlina/localhost were missing. Needless to say that CMC and InfoView did not work.
2- I thought I'll uninstall and use different ports, but the uninstall did not work. i tried both through the media and through Add/Remove programs. The media uninstall gave a 'Fatal Error' in the end and the Add/Remove program errored immediately saying 'Error applying Transforms......'
Questions:
1- I'd like someone to first please confirm that what I noticed after the install was because I used the same port numbers.
2- How can I make the uninstall to work?
3- Since the upgrade process migrated the repository, can I uninstall XIR3 and 3.0, perform a new 3.0 installtion that uses the (migrated) repository?
Thanks,
Kashif

Hi,
Addition to the above
go for 7.11 (i.e ehp1 of 7.1) ..as it have other features to use..
especially proxy feature in AAE (using XI protocol in SOAP) and also Idoc packaging which will be veryful ..
for compatible side 7.1 onwards we have pattern in service interface(message interface) with XI 3.0 stateless..
Gud luck

I don't understand why a person who has been with a company for 6 years cant get a simple upgrade can anyone help figure that out?

Are you trying to get an upgrade before you're actually eligible? If that is the case, it doesn't matter if you've been a customer for 6 years or 6 days...if you're not eligible then you're not eligible. Some of your possible options are to pay full retail, do an early edge up (if you are eligible for that option), or buying a phone from some other source to use.
If your situation is something different then it might help to share that. The options may still be the same but it helps to know what exactly the issue is.

Few things come to mind:
Are you the account owner?
Is your account past due?
Are you attempting to use a credit card NOT in the name of the account owner?
Does the card have sufficient funds to cover the two devices and upgrade fees?
Are you using a card that may be new (Other expired) and you have not called to activate the new card?
My guess the issue is with the card. Since the shipment did not ship. Later in the day when they batched purchases to send for confirmation from the CC companies, yours had an issue
When calling, the reps will not have a clue if any of the above is occurring, just that the order wont go through. Plus if they feel you may be attempting a fraudulent purchase, they will not tell you that either.

• Simple Upgrade using Patchset 13

Hi,
I have been following the 'Simple Upgrade' Process and it's not
clear to me how the Headstart Accounts get migrated - HST50
(template package owner) and HSU21 (Headstart Utilities
administrator). I can't see any references to this in the
documentation.
Do they need to be reinstalled after performing the Repository
migration? Should the user accounts be exported and then
imported into the new database ? Should I install the users
again using the new Headstart 6.5 installation disk? I notice
that in the migration guide, it is necessary to run some of the
new utilities, which are only available with the 6.5
imstallation
(These accounts are not included in the migration of Repository
subordinate users as they do not need to be created as
Repository users).
thanks
David

In the Patch 13 instructions (readme13.htm), steps 8 and 9 tell
you how to upgrade your Headstart users.
8. Logon to sqlplus as the Headstart Template Package owner. Run
the following scripts from the <Headstart Home>\hst\scripts
directory.
cg$err.pks
cg$err.pkb
cg$err_msg.sql
new_ofg_msg.sql
recompl.sql
invalid.sql - you should see 'no records selected'.
9. Logon to sqlplus as the Headstart Demo Application owner. Run
the following scripts from the <Headstart Home>\hst\demo
directory.
dropdemo.sql
instdemo.sql
If you want to migrate these users to a new database, you should
just use the regular import and export tools.

• Simple upgrade question : CS3 to CS5

Which serial number do i pop into the box?...okokok, I'm overtired, maybe this is obvious...
Do I use the one that came on the CS5 upgrade package?...will that read my last version of photoshop and just install?...
Do I use the SN that came on my upgrade version of CS3?...
thanks
M
ps...I'm just trying to avoid the upgrade mini-nightmare I had when I installed CS3...an hour on the phone with people in india, one who had no clue what she was talking about, heavy accents leading to even more difficult communication...I really don't want to go through that again...

Hi,
Do you mean you are trying to upgrade from CS3 to CS5???
1> yes you can upgrade
2> if you have CS5 upgrade cop, in order to install you need to have obviously CS5 Srial Number + CS3 Serial Number and while installing CS5 that will take you to upgrade check as soon as you enter CS5 Serial Number. if you do not have CS3 serial number then you will have to contact Adobe for unlocking your CS5.
Hope this helps..!

• X-Fi I/O Upgrade Quest

I know very little about sound cards, so please be patient with me. I recently purchased a Dell using Windows XP with 5. surround speakers and the X-Fi ExtremeMusic card. Rather than purchasing an additional revei'ver and speakers for my digital cable box (I'm having issues with Media Center as well, but that's a different story) and DVD console or a larger monitor to replace my TV, I was thinking about purchasing the X-Fi I/O Upgrade for the cable and external DVD digital inputs to play through my computer. I've been reading and researching for days now, and while there is a lot of discussion about digital output, I can't seem to find anything about using the digital input other than for use in recording. Can you use it simply to play the audio? If so, how do you enable the source? I tried emailing Creative Support, but I've received no response, so I thought I would try here. Thanks...

If the XtremeMusic came preinstalled with the Dell?probably?it didn't come?with?built-in DD/DTS decoders, so it won't work with 5. signals from external sources (If you want to verify open Creative Audio Console and look for?a Decoder tab). To listen to PCM stereo you just have to unmute the SPDIF-In in the mixer, to decode DD/DTS you have to select 'Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-In decode'?from the 'SPDIF Input Settings' drop-down menu in the 'SPDIF I/O' tab (only available if the drivers detect the I/O dri've or console and the built-in decoder is installed). Be aware that decoding with the soundcard can introduce lag since Windows is not a real-time OS and the decoder has clipping problems during loud sounds with bitstreams encoded on-the-fly like in the Xbox360/PS3. There are people that built succesfully a receiver-less HTPC with an X-Fi but you'll avoid a few headaches with a standalone receiver.

• Simple upgrade question

Greetings,
I currently own on older Macbook and I'm considering upgrading to the new 13" Macbook Pro. I know I can transfer my user accounts using the Firewire transfer, but since the Macbook Pro comes with a smaller hard drive than I'm currently using, I would like to ask if it is a good idea just to swap out the drive in the older Macbook and put it in the Macbook Pro? I'm currently running Snow Leopard, so that should not be an issue. Has anyone done this? And if so, what problems did you run into?

Since the new MacBook Pros' manuals have not yet been made available (they will show up [here|http://support.apple.com/manuals/#portablecomputers] when Apple puts them online) your questions are not easy to answer, but assuming Apple's designs are similar to the previous generation MBP, you should be able to swap out the hard drives without any problem. Since some of your internal hardware may be different and require different drivers (such as for graphics chips) the software from your old MBP may not run the new one, so it may be necessary to reinstall the OS.
Hope this helps you. Best of luck.

• Simple to upgrade from Combo Drive to Super Drive?

Hi,
Apologies if this is a really basic question. I purchased a MacBook with a Combo Drive. I thought I had purchased a super drive. Is this a simple upgrade and can I do such an upgrade myself? I need the DVD-burning capacity.
Thanks for your help.
Jenny

I really think you're asking for trouble here. For starters, that is definitely not a user serviceable part. Memory? Yes. Hard Drive? Yes (finally). The optical drive, though, would require an authorized Apple dealer to perform the work. Otherwise, you'll void your warranty.
I don't know, though, if Apple will let you add a SuperDrive to that one. Honestly, I think it'll be easier if you just purchase an external DVD burner (check www.macsales.com for some cool options).

• TDM Digital Input not working in LP7 after upgrade?

I ran my first session today with LP7. I opened a version of a song I was working on in LP6. I have all of the DAE DTDM and Dig hw settings the same as in LP6. All of the tracks ply perfectly and no problems with plugins. When I went to record the vocals, the track I was using showed input and the waveform drew normally as expected. Of course I didn't listen back and went on to record 4 more passes of the lead coal to comp later. As the singer was leaving, I decided to play back the last take. To my horror; there was nothing on the track except digital noise full to 0db. My assumption was that it was some kind of digital clock sync issue with the 192. Checked HW settings and everything was set properly. Using AES input as clock sync, recording to AES 1-2 inputs just like in LP6. When i went to the screen that sets up the clock synchronization, it was set to digital. I changed it and then changed it back and a dialogue box opened and said that my clock source need to be set to digital. It was already set to digital AES1 1-2 enc. Has something changed since LP6? Thanks everyone for all of the help these past few days. I though this was going to be a simple upgrade...

***, BWF?! Guess I'm falling behind, had to google that stuff!
Yeah, I had the feeling it could be about wav. Guess I've always been hesitant with wav. files on mac's. Have no problems playing them back though....
Now, to ESB distortion. You really shouldn't have this. What PT/Logic config do you use? I'm running 10.3.8/PT6.9cs1/LP7.1, a pretty stable config and my esb distortion is long gone.
But here's a little procedure I had to do and it has been very successful on other rigs I helped out with as well:
1. Archiving and trashing ALL Prefs (yeah, you've heard it before but bare with me), Logic and Digi. Make sure you don't have any LAP 6 pref's either, there is one under system's preferences as well.
2. Restart the computer
3. Start Protools, set the playback engine to match your hardware and workflow
4. Quit PT
5. Start Logic-it will ask you if you want to run the setup assistant, say yes.
Now, be meticulous with your settings so it matches PT's playback engine.
6. When you're finished, open "Audio Hardware and Settings" and check the DAE's settings - it's probably not set to what you chose (bug?). Correct that so that, once again, you are matched with the PT playback engine.
Finished! (Well, apart from importing your KeyCommands from the old pref.)
Since I did this I've been more or less clear of issues, and it serves as an alternative to rebuild my autoload. Kind of...
Sorry if this is obvious, it's just that I know power users rarely go near automated "assistants" and I think there is a point in doing so since LP7.
I think Apple is putting power into such features, and this has surely helped my and a couple of other rigs.
There is ofcourse another reason for esb distortion and that's "dodgy" AU's.
I know that both Stylus RMX and Reaktor are very sensitive in DTDM environments. There is a certain logic to that, since they both are capable of handling huge amounts of files/computation.
Anyway, best of luck!
/Erik

• Upgrading from TCS 2.0 to TCS v. 2.5 - Know What You're Getting!!!

I'm not the type to normally write in forums but I just went through 2 days of customer service and technical support hell and thought I would share the experience with the sole motivation being to spare fellow TCS users the aggravation and make you aware of a possible disconnect between sales and technical support - know what you`re getting!!
Yesterday I purchased the upgrade from TCS 2.0 to TCS 2.5 from the Adobe online store as an electronic download. After receiving a confirmation email I logged into my Adobe account and noted that the download page contained 2 serial numbers, one for Photoshop CS5, one for Captivate 5 and then a zip folder for UPDATES only to Framemaker and Robohelp and also 2 language packs for text-to-speech for Captivate 5. Obviously I was missing links to Framemaker, Robohelp and Acrobat.
The goal of my purchase was to procure an additional licence in order to install TCS v 2.5 on 2 additional computers so, I had a sick feeling that I may have misunderstood what was offered in the upgrade; I then had the following conversation with Adobe`s Chat Live Now (excerpted from transcript):
Me: Hi. I just purchased the upgrade from TCS 2.0 to TCS 2.5. My expectation was that this contained all programs within the suite yet on my downloads the only programs that are listed are Photoshop CS5 and Captivate 5. Does this upgrade package not include the ability to install Framemaker, Robohelp and Acrobat. I purchased on the assumption that the upgrade would constitute an additional licence for these products as well. Was I wrong?
Perkins: ...TCS includes all programs, you need to select those programs while installing.
Me: Okay, I'm just downloading it now so I will confirm that it does, in fact, include all of the programs. So just to clarify, my original understanding was correct and the upgrade provides me with 2 additional licences for TCS?
Perkins: Yes. You can install 1 copy of the software on 2 computers with same Operating System.
Okay - fair enough, I then re-visited the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2.5 web page under Upgrade--Reasons to Upgrade where it states:
``Work with full new versions of Adobe professional tools for technical communicators and help authors, including Adobe® FrameMaker® 9, Adobe RoboHelp® 8, Adobe® Captivate® 5, Adobe Acrobat® 9 Pro Extended, and Adobe Photoshop® CS5 software``.
Now to me, FULL means full versions. I subsequently entered customer service hell and spent an hour and a half on the phone being transferred through 5 different people, none of whom were familiar with the contents of the Technical Communication Suite. It took forever jsut to get them to understand that I weas upgrading from TCS version 2.0 and NOT trying to upgrade from Photoshop CS4 and Captivate 4 directly. Eventually my question as to whether I was entitled to an additional licence for Framemaker, Robohelp and Acrobat Pro Extended was elevated to Tier 2 and I was told I would be contacted by Adobe. Today I received a voicemail and email stating that I should install Framemaker, Robohelp and Acrobat Pro Extended from my original TCS v 2.0 installer. I subsequently did so (successfully) and then installed Captivate 5 without issue.
The next challenge arose with Photshop CS5 - the serial number, according to the installer, was invalid. Back to customer support who referred me to technical support - turns out the download link on my Adobe account download page was for a Chinese language-only version of Photoshop Extended which doesn`t even come with TCS 2.5! So, another 90 minutes on the phone throughout which I keep seeking clarification, does TCS 2.5 grant me an additional licence for Framemaker 9, Robohelp 8 and Acrobat 9 Pro Extended...
Technical Service states they can send me a physical disc with installers for Photoshop CS 5 and Captivate 5 and then CONFIRMED that I am NOT entitled to any additional licences for Framemaker, Robohelp or Acrobat, I am ONLY entitled to the 2 installs under the original TCS version 2 licence. This of course runs completely contrary to the literature on the website and my conversation with Live Chat Now. In disgust, I have submitted a refund request.
Just for kicks I decided to again try to clarify with Live Chat Now what products that I, as a customer, receive a licence for by purchasing the upgrade to TCS v 2.5 and have pasted the transcript of that chat as follows;
Me: Can you please confirm for me whether upgrading from the Adobe Technical Communication Suite version 2.0 to version 2.5 entitles me to 1 additional licence for ALL of the applications that constitute the Technical Communication Suite (i.e. Robohelp, Acrobat, Framemaker, Captivate, Photoshop and Presenter) OR does it merely entitle me to 1 licence to install Photoshop CS5 and Captivate 5 in conjunction with my pre-existing TCS 2.0 installation?
Morph: Give me a minute, I’m reading it.
Me: sure
Morph: When you place the order for upgrade, you will get new products.
Me: I understand that I will get Photoshop CS5 and Captivate 5 BUT do I also get Framemaker, Acrobat and Robohelp?
Morph: Adpbe eLearning Suite 2 includes: Adobe Captivate 5, Flash Professional CS5, Dreamweaver CS5, Photoshop CS5 Extended, Acrobat 9 Pro, Adobe Presenter 7 (Available only on Windows platform), Soundbooth CS5.
Morph: No.
Morph: Only Acrobat is Included.
Me: I am not talking about the e-Learning Suite, I am referring to the Technical Communication Suite
Morph: Oh okay, got you, first tell me, using which product you will be upgrading this from?
Me: TCS 2.0
Morph: Okay.
Morph: Yes, if you do this upgrade you will get Adobe FrameMaker 9, RoboHelp 8, Adobe Captivate 5, Photoshop CS5, Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, and Adobe Presenter 7
Me: so this will entitle me to 1 additional licence for all of these applications, over and above the licence I already own for the TCS version 2?
Morph: Correct, however, you may also be installing the software (Upgrade version) directly without uninstalling the previous version of the software.
Me: So just to clarify, if I purchase the upgrade and decide that I want to install on a completely different machine than the two computers that already have TCS version 2.0 installed (as entitled by my licence) then I will be able to, in effect, install the TCS 2.5 onto two completely different computers (as per the Adobe licence) so that, at the end of the day, I can actually have FOUR computers with TCS installed by virtue of the 2 licences that I should have - one from TCS version 2.0 and 1 licence from TCS version 2.5É
Morph: Purchasing the “upgrade” version product is nothing but a “full” version, but if you do not have the serial key for older version you can’t Install the upgrade, but for full version you do no need previous version serial number.
Morph: Correct.
Morph: You can simply purchase your upgrade and verify that you have the qualifying older product during the installation process.
Morph: If it's installed on your computer, the Adobe installer will either find it or prompt you to help it find the software for verification.
Morph: If it's not installed, you will be prompted to enter the qualifying serial number for the older version.
Me: Is the download file one individual installer or an installer for each application
Morph: It is one Indiviidual Installer.
Morph: When you download it will automatically Install every program in the Suite one-by-one.
Me: Okay, the reason I have been asking is that yesterday I made this purchase yet my download page had links only to Photoshop (a Chinese language only version of Photoshop Extended which does not come with the Suite) and Captivate. There was no link whatsoever for the other applications. I went through customer service and technical support and no one, and I mean no one, could answer the questions I`ve asked you. According to customer support and the serialization team, the upgrade to v. 2.5 DOES NOT include Framemaker, Robohelp and Acrobat. As a consumer I have absolutely no idea what is right and what is wrong. How am I supposed to make an informed purchase...
Morph: did you check on the link and confirmed that it does not Include the upgrade to version 2.5?
Me: Sorry - not clear what you mean, my receipt from the Adobe store was for TCS v 2.5
Morph: Like I said upgrade for the Technical communicate suite Includes Adobe FrameMaker 9, RoboHelp 8, Adobe Captivate 5, Photoshop CS5, Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, and Adobe Presenter 7, and you should be getting all as a single download link, seems like you are not able to make it with the link to Install Individual products altogether, so you need to contact our Customer Service at 800-833-6687. for the
Morph: precise Info.
Me: I went through that route yesterday and today and they told me that the upgrade DOES NOT include the other applications. As well, I noticed that the download file size for the upgrade is 1 half the size of the full version - obviously something is missing
Me: The information you are telling me is the precise opposite of what they told me. How do I, as a consumer, get the proper answer
Morph: upgrade do Includes the product I have mentioned above.
Me: I know you`re trying to assist but I`m flummoxed - my case was escalated to Tier 2 and they told me it doesn`t include the other applications
Morph: up to some extent i can help being a sales team member, ant only customer people generate the links and have access to customer account to check what really went wrong.
Me: Is it possible to have a senior sales rep contact me - this matter of a `simple` upgrade has consumed a ridiculous amount of time. As far as my issue - Adobe tells me nothing was wrong and that the upgrade is only a licence for Photoshop and Captivate
Morph: Okay,Just a minute.
Morph: You can contact our Sales Team on 1-800-585-0774.
So, at the end of the day, sales tells me that upgrading to v 2.5 grants me an additional licence for ALL applications in the suite whereas Adobe`s own technical support has told me this is not true. Again I ask, how does a consumer make an informed choice...
I`ve been buying Adobe software for both Mac and PC since Creative Suite 2 came out and this has absolutely been the most frustrating experience I have ever had. I get great use out of the Techncial Communication Suite and thought it would be nice to have an additional licence but at the end of the day I have decided it certainly was not worth the hassle - particularly when Adobe itself can`t figure out what I am entitled to!!
I am a fan of Adobe`s software but honestly, is business that good that you can treat your customers this way????

Hi. I suspect that may indeed be the case. If so, that's fine but nowhere is it clearly articulated what a user gains by purchasing the upgrade (and I am specifically referring to an upgrade from TCS version 2 to v 2.5) and certainly sales (as evidenced by my chat transcripts where I believe I asked quite specific questions) are advising customers that you will, in fact, gain an additional licence to ALL components of the TCS by upgrading.
If it had been clearly articulated on the Adobe TCS 2.5 website that an upgrade from TCS version 2 only entitles users to install Photoshop CS5 and Captivate 5 in conjunction with the existing installation of the other components of TCS 2 - or - better yet, stated clearly that the upgrade from version 2 to 2.5 does not entitle the end-user to an additional licence for Acrobat Pro Extended, Framemaker, Robohelp and Presenter 7 then that would allow me, as a consumer, to make an informed decision whether to make the purchase. Since that is not the case, and Adobe's sales representatives are clearly advising customers otherwise, I felt compelled to post this so others don't waste their time as I did trying to sort it out. At one point I was advised that I should use my existing TCS version 2 installer to install Acrobat etc but received contradictory answers as to whether I was entitled to an additional licence for these products. At no time during my first hour and forty-five minute conversation, my second ninety minute conversation nor my third, and last, twenty minute conversation was anyone able to clearly articulate what you have stated - and - that still leaves the fact that the text on Adobe's website is misleading.
BTW - why I received a download link from Adobe for a Chinese-language-only version of Photoshop CS5 Extended is still a mystery
At the end of the day, I think the TCS (while not perfect) is a very useful tool and I will, in all probability, upgrade to the full version of TCS 3 which will, no doubt, constitute a full licence for all components of the suite. I am not attributing malicious intent to the Adobe employees, but I am saying that they themselves seem confused about what is included in the upgrade and provided contradictory statements. If Adobe employees can't provide a straight, cut-to-the-chase answer about what seems a straightforward question then that certainly creates unnecessary confusion for the customer.

• OS 10.4 , upgrade unsuccessful

My recent attempt to upgrade my iMac G4 from OS 10.1 to OS 10.4. was unsuccessful. I could really use some help figuring out what to try next.
I encountered problems right away, on the CPU Drop In Disc 1. Disk First Aid kicked in to try to fix the problem. I kept seeing a message "incorrect threading records."
Ultimately, a message displayed that Disk First Aid couldn't repair the problem, and the upgrade failed. Not sure if this means there's a problem on my hard drive that prevented a successful install or what. I've never had any issues with this iMac in the five years I've owned it.
The troubleshooting section in the Tiger install guide seems to suggest that using "Erase and Install" is my only remaining option. I really don't want to resort to this if I don't have to.
The upgrade is a pack of five black CDs — the retail version, I believe. I haven't run any disk repair utilities on this computer in quite some time, and wonder if that may be worth a try.
Anyone have any suggestions on things to try that may correct the problem and allow me to do a simple upgrade, instead of an "Erase and Install"? Thanks!

Thanks, Steve.
My iMac is a G4 with 384MB of RAM, so I should be okay to upgrade, right?
You're right that you can't do a simple upgrade. I just tried running the disk repair one more time from CPU Drop in Disk 1. Because I have OS 10.1, I have to choose "Archive" and something like "Previous settings." It appears this option just saves your old system files in a separate folder, then imports your settings to the new system once you upgrade.
I just tried to run the disk repair on my hard drive. It was unsuccessful in three attempts. The problem appears to be "Incorrect number of thread records."
Is there some other disk repair utility out there that may be able to fix this problem? Or something else that may work? Anyone have any ideas?
I've never had any issues with my hard drive before when upgrading or installing software. I'd really like to avoid having to erase my entire hard drive in order to upgrade, but the manual suggests that "Erase and Install" is my only remaining option.
Help! This is frustrating.

• 10.4.11 would like to upgrade to 10.5.6

I'm confused because it appears my Apple running 10.4.11 seems to have all the features of OS X Leopard, and I actually thought that was was what I was getting when I bought it. Anyway, now I would like to run "Back to My Mac" with my laptop, which is running 10.5.6. What are my options?....Thanks!

Hi Chuck!
As Kappy posted, if your iMac meets the Leopard System Requirements, the Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD, can be purchased at The Apple Store (U.S.), Apple retail stores, Apple resellers, and some Online vendors.
Also if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Leopard is on DVD.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Once Leopard 10.5.x is installed, you can use the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update to upgrade to the current version.
You may also find this Leopard Installation and Setup Guide PDF useful.
The posted RAM System Requirement, is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
As a precaution, before upgrading the OS, you should create a backup of the entire system, or at least, any data you do not wish to lose or corrupt.
In addition to the Archive & Install procedure, there is also a Simple Upgrade, or an Erase & Install option.
Review the info here About Installation Options.
Specifically; "About Upgrade to Mac OS X
Upgrading to Mac OS X takes a little longer than installing it on a volume without Mac OS X, but it is the least intrusive way to install--most of your existing settings and applications are left untouched during an upgrade. In other words, you won't have to configure a lot of settings afterwards."

• New ipod touch requires 10.5 can i upgrade from 10.3 to 10.5?

Hi there,
like many other mac users I am now in the position of owning the latest ipod but run an OS that is no longer supported namely OS X 10.3.
I have always owned my software and have never infringed any copyright agreements, thus in order to use my new device the ipod touch legally, I require to part with 85 GBP for OS 10.5.
My question is is there any precedent available and/or information on making the jump from OS X 10.3 to OS X 10.5 in one leap.
Dare I say it should be possible, otherwise, surely to give up the sale of tiger 10.4 leaves me with two options; search for a copy on ebay or buy a new machine...
mmmm not made of money
cheers in advance

You would probably do better backing up your old system, which you should do anyway, and making a clean breast of it with Leopard by installing via an "Erase and Install" option (screen right after language selection - select Options).
You can then import what you need with the migration assistant.
There are many apps and things that might not work if you performed a simple upgrade.
Of course, if you create a bootable clone of your old system, it really doesn't matter, but there are issues with passwords, permissions, etc that may be problematic if you simply upgrade directly.
