A USB internet connection

I know everyone is having the same problem, with airport virtually dropping the internet unless you are in the same exact room as the router. I've dealt with this for the past 8 months, but I"m really tired of it.
Is there a USB connectability i can use? I went to Best Buy and they said there was nothing compatible. I just REALLY want to not have to think about how close I have to be to a router. I use my laptop in a few different locations, so I don't want to have to think about what kind of router it is.

Hmmm, that's strange, as I know a 15-year old whose MacBook also recently went out of AppleCare, it's been used really really hard, it's always connected to the internet only via wireless, yet it's never had a network problem - but of course the Tiger OS X version software was kept up to date and a password protected network used at home (although I don't know what kind of wireless networks are used away from home, other than a school wireless system).
For sake of comparison, 15-year olds don't usually have any authority to access and administer networks, so those home and school networks tend to be very stable, although many home networks are not particularly powerful. In addition, in this instance there is little potential interference from wireless phones, which may well be an issue where a lot of people live.
I had some portable phone interference problem from close neighbors myself, and the only thing I could do to combat it was to change the channel on which my network was broadcasting. I had to change it several times until one particular neighbor moved, plus finally I upgraded my wireless network's router to the new "n" speed which gives me more channels. Now, instead of choosing my channel, this router is setup to automatically use the best channel.
I've never had an interference problem when I've used public networks, such as those at restaurants, cafes, motels, stores or offices. Some of them I've used have been password protected, or I'd have to log-on, but mostly the ones I use just allow anyone to connect.

My daughter is using and Alltel , UT Star Com, UM 175 wireless connect card on a iMac G5 with OS 10.4.6. She had a good internet connection for two days, then nothing since. She has had many phone tech assistance with Alltel, but still unable to reconnect.
In System preferences it shows that she is connected via “Pan Tech USB Modem” port 777. She is getting good signal strength with send and receive signal and connect time. However, when using Safari and Mail app she is unable to connect to the internet.
It seems to me that the problem lies within the set=up between the iMac and Alltel card. The card seems to be making the connection, but for some reason the computer can’t realize that this card is the way to the internet. Safari brings up the usual “you are not connected to the Internet”, then the diagnostics application that guides you through troubleshooting with the usual questions, none of which include a wireless USB connection.
Is there some other thing she needs to do for her iMac to recognize the Altell card?

After installing Lion, sharing my USB internet connection no longer works on my iPhone4.

I have a USB internet device and have been able to share that connection with my iPhone without problem, until installing Lion. I searched the web, and someone suggested changing my encryption to 128, which I did. For a few hours that worked, but now it's not giving me a decent connection. Cannot access rented movies via Clear USB Internet connection, but can via wifi and Time Warner Cable. Has anyone encountered the same thing?

I recently rented a movie from iTunes (version 10.4.1.10 on a Windows 7 professional laptop) and when I am at home, on my Clear USB connection, I don't see the Rented Movies in my Library. When I bring my laptop to work however, and connect to a Time Warner Internet connection via wifi, I am able to see my Rented Movies in my Library. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

USB internet connection

Hi everyone, yesterday a friend of mine asks me to him with his MacBook Pro, but as couldn't solve it, i was looking for a solution but i haven't find it yet, this is the problem:
Right now he's using a cable modem and want to connect his Mac using a USB cable but its not detected when he plugs the cable, but if you use the ethernet port is working perfectly, the problem is that the ethernet is being used by other person at his house and right now they don't want to get a router because they going to update the cable modem to a wireless in a couple of days, so can someone tell me how can i set up the network with the USB cable? Right now he has a MacBook Pro with the Leopard version of Mac OS. Thanks

I am afraid, as Jay says, you are stuck with this unless you can persuade your friend to let you use the Ethernet cable. The only other way (with a Mac) would be to use sharing with a Firewire cable and again, the PC OS may not have that available.
The obvious answer is a wifi router (coming soon you write) and using the ethernet with that. These usually also have four Ethernet ports as well as a wifi link.

Accessing a USB drive connected to Airport Extreme over Internet

Hello!
I have an iPad, I have an Airport Extreme with a USB drive connected and I have a MobileMe account.
And I'm aware that as yet there's no Back To My Mac for iPad.
Is there an easy way on the iPad to connect remotely to the USB drive, over the Internet?
I don't want to have to leave my MacBook Pro on whilst I'm travelling.
I've looked at Logmein and Filebrowser and iTeleport and can't find a way to do this.
Has anyone managed to suss this???

I am not ware of any way of doing what you want since, to my knowledge, the AE does not function as a server to "serve" the contents of a connected USB drive. I have a LaCie NAS and that NAS includes a FTP server that I can access via my iPad via AirSharing HD.

Home Hub 3/USB HDD causing internet connection to ...

Hi Guys,
I've been using a Home Hub 3 for a couple of years without any real problems. I recently decided to plug a USB HDD into the hubs usb port to act as shared storage on the network. I initially tried using an unpowered portable HDD which failed to work (I've since found out that the port does not have the power to power these devices).
I then tried a powered HDD which worked well and I was able to map to my network. However with in 24 hours I started noticing very frequent intermintant dropping of my internet connection. Through elimination I have isolated the cause to the USB drive. On removing and powering the drive the internet connection returns to being stable with no problems.
To test if it was just a fault caused by that particular USB drive I installed a USB flash drive (I have read that the port outputs enough power for a simple thumb drive) to see if the problem was recreated. Again the drive was recognised and I mappped it to the network sucessfully. However the intermitant problem has again become apparent. It has again also been corrected by removing the drive from the home hub.
The outages seem only to be with the internet connection. The wireless network with in the home remains up and running without interfernce. The outages are all for several seconds before self correcting and can happen almost continually making the web virtually unusable. For example it has taken me 5 or 6 attempts to post this message.
Any help on the cause of this problem and solutions would be greatly appreciated. I'd really like to avoid buying a NAS etc if unnecessary.

Thanks for that info, and the above probably explains why it didn't work with the drive I tried it on - I'm pretty sure I formatted the one I tried to NTFS - I shall have to test it with a thumb drive.
Also, if you're looking at going down the NAS route, I've also been looking into getting a NAS and have had Netgear recommended to me - I know they're a good manufacturer, and from what I've seen it looks like you get pro-level features (such as RAID 5 (improved error correction/redundancy (for models with 3 or more drive bays)), hot swap (so you can swap out a dead drive without switching the unit off), and so on) at much closer to consumer-level prices - not 100% sure if they do one with FTP/web access, but I'd be surprised if they didn't.
Worth shopping around - there's a lot of alternatives on the market these days.

i can take pictures off my phone but thats it, i have some nice programs for pictures and art work and cant get them back on my phone to send them to friends and family. Problems with sharing internet connection via usb

I have been sharing the internet connection on my iPhone 5 via usb to a PC for a few years. When updating to iOS 8.3 and iTunes to 12.1 (from iOS 6 if I remember correctly) the internet sharing through usb stopped working. Sharing through wifi works and settings are the same as when usb internet share did work. Any idea on how to solve this except downgrading?
For my troubleshooting, has anyone been able to share internet via usb to PC (or Mac) with iOS 8 / iTunes 12.
PS I have unliited cellular data and iPhone is my only internet connection at home,

There is a excellent book that teaches you how to do this (and other things) called Mac OS X Tiger: The Missing Manual (others of course)
If I remember correctly (book is on loan)
1: System Preferences>Network>Show>network port configurations (click unlock)
2: Click>Built in Firewire and drag to the top of the list (why I forget why)
3: System Preferences>Sharing>Internet>Share your connection from: Built in Ethernet (or what your using for your connection in) >To computers using: Built in Firewire>Start
4: Mac #2>Hook up Firewire 400 cable>System Preferences>Network>Location>New Location
5: Show>Network Port Configurations>Drag Built in Firewire to top of list and enable.
6: I also think you have to enable Personal Web Sharing on the Mac hosting the internet.
anyway play with it, you'll figure it out. if someone doesn't get to you.

USB Broad Band Internet Connection

i have 2 wireless connections i connect to at same time, a wireless router that connects to my internal network and a broad band internet connection through a 3G usb, when i use the usb alone i can access the internet but when i connect also to the wireless router to do some work on my internal network i lose connection to internet although the usb is connected and its also connected to the 3G network how can i solve this problem ?

Try rearranging the order of the interfaces in System Preferences : Network. At a guess I'd say OS X is favouring the wireless over the USB.

Internet connection and USB

I am having problems with my MSI KT4V motherboard and the internet connection.
When any USB device is connected to the computer and I try to connect to the internet Via ISDN the computer dails and connects to the server but the connection is not confirmed as the daten transfer is blocked.
When the USB device is disconnected it works OK.

What's the usb device?
Have you ever connected to the internet through some sort of usb adapter? There may be some lingering hardware and it may be conflicting with your current connection. Try all available USB ports? Got the current drivers for said hardware(isdn card, usb device)?
