A word of caution when closing lid of MBP (late 2008) and placing in bag

Over the years, all the previous Mac Books I've owned went to sleep almost immediately I closed the lid. With the Unibody MBP late 2008,I thought this was no different. Until one day I arrived back home, unzipped the bag to find both fans going full tilt and a MBP very hot under the collar! It appears that the fans will continue to run until the temperature has dropped to an acceptable level even though the lid is closed and the display is off.
The moral of this ramble is to wait until the light on the front starts to pulse before placing your MBP in bag. Thankfully there was no visible damage to the MBP, but, if it had been left any longer, could have ended up with a cracked display or worse, a battery fire!

Safe Sleep is the process of writing the RAM contents to the hard disk, which occurs after you close the lid and before the light starts to pulse. It's actually been a feature of Mac portables since the PowerBook G4 (Double-Layer SD), in late 2005. All MacBooks, MBPs, and MBAirs have had it since day 1. That's what you're interrupting when you move the computer before the light starts to pulse, which can cause an unexpected subsequent wake up.
Apple warns against moving a portable computer before the light begins pulsing:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25026
Note that the more RAM you have, the longer the process takes.

    thanks and Happy New Year

Your question about making Word "the default when closing AW documents" is a bit unclear.
An AppleWorks document is an AppleWorks document. If you want it in Word format, you must explicitly save a copy of it as such (and also append the .doc suffix to the proposed file name).

  • MacBook Pro crashes when closing lid while in windows 8.1

I use a late-2011 MacBook Pro with Mavericks for work and run Windows 8.1 as my daily driver via Boot Camp. I've been running this setup for about a month without incident, but within the past week whenever I close the laptop it starts acting really weird. Normally it has alway just gone into sleep mode with the white LED on the front of the base pulsing slowly, and when I open it back up (even after a day or two) it snaps right back to action.
When I got home from work one day about a week ago I noticed that the computer was completely turned off, and when I booted it back up it went to OSX (I have it set to boot into Windows by default). I didn't initially think anything of it, but I soon realized that every time I closed the lid it was crashing. After closer examination I saw that the white LED wasn't flashing after closing the lid and that I could hear the fans still running. Oddly enough everytime I open it immediately after seeing this occur, the LED starts blinking when the lid is open yet the screen is black, the computer is unresponsive, and yet the fans are still humming. Eventually the computer just turns itself off completely. I've tested the same sequence of events while in OSX, yet everything works as it should: the LED illuminates immediately after closing the lid and the computer is fully operational the moment I open the lid.
I haven't made any major changes or performed any sort of updates since setting everything up initially, so I'm completely baffled as to why this is occuring. I've tried to reinstall/repair the Boot Camp drivers while in Windows, but to no avail. I'm at a total loss... I defintely am hoping to avoid having to wipe my fully configured windows installation and starting from scratch. Has anyone experienced anything like this and hopefully have any suggestions? Thanks!

I would be looking at the Quad core MBP for Parallels. A Quad-core vs Dual-Core is not a fair comparison.
For the same CPU, the two bottlenecks for Parallels are RAM and disk speed.
You will see an improvement if you max out the RAM and the disk speed. The SSD in the MBP will be much faster than the HDD in the iMac.

  • Disable Sleep Mode When Closing Lid

Is it possible to disable this? It is really inconvenient and annoying. I don't want my computer open on my desk when its simply playing music or streaming media. Also, sleep obviously logs me off instant messengers. This is also inconvenient when moving rooms and such. You have to then restart downloads, relogin, or carry it around open. This would seem simple and an easy setting to switch, but I have as yet not been able to find it. I know this exists on my PC laptop so I'm assumging Mac has a similar function? I'm not sure this is my first Mac. Thanks for any help with this issue.

I haven't used more than one PC laptop (my Dell XPS) but it gives you the option to select what you want it to do when the lid gets closed and you also have the option of what you want it to do when you press the power button (just like all of our computers do, which are all Dells, other than my 2 Macs).
The settings for Windows (as this is probably just a part of the OS and not company specific) let you have your "Sleep" option, "Hibernate" option, "Shutdown" option and the "Ask Me What To Do" option (also with the standard options of: select # of minutes until Screensaver, Turning off the Monitor/Display, and Turning off the Hard Drive). So you can set it so that your system always sleeps when you hit the power button when it is already turned on, or that it always asks what you want it to do. And then for the laptop lid being closed, you can set it to your system staying on, it going to sleep, it hibernates... etc, so that you can cater it all to what you want it to be like, your needs....
If there is one thing that I would like to see in the future for Macs, this feature would be it (well I have a few I would like to see). The networking aspect (joining up to a -possibly Windows- home network easily) and other customization features of the look and feel of the OS are the other main 2.
I love using WindowsBlinds and other skinning software, to change the look and feel, and the option to change how the main menu bar looks and acts which I do think could be harder -possibly?- for a Mac as the menu changes with each application that is the *currently focused* window compared to Windows just adding in a tab to the bar with the window's name and you get all the "menu info" from inside the tabbed window instead... If applications like this do exist for OSX, I would love to hear about them...

  • KDE: Laptop only sleeps when closing lid every other time

    Hello all,
I'm running KDE 4.14.1 on an older Toshiba Satellite laptop. In the KDE System Settings, I've told it to sleep when closing the lid and this works - but strangely only every other time I close the lid. It will work once, then I open the lid and it powers up just fine. Then I close it again and the screen just turns off but the laptop stays fully powered.
Any ideas what might be going on? It consistently only sleeps every other time when I close the lid (the other times it just turns the screen off).

    Take a look at /etc/systemd/logind.conf
Is systemd also trying to manage this?

  • MBP Core 2 Duo randomly restarts when closing lid

Randomly my 2.33 Core 2 Duo restarts when closing the lid instead of going to sleep.
A real pain when your in the middle of something
    Anyone know a fix ?
Recently had a new logic board (due to faulty graphics card) and hoped this might also cure the restart at sleep problem. Did not.
    Advice welcome.
    Thanks

I would suggest you to reset the power manager to check whether the issue resolves. If the issue persists please contact Apple Authorized Service provider for further troubleshooting.
In this case I suspect the logic board or may be the sensors as a issue but to confirm it is always good to contact an AASP for further troubleshooting.
To reset the Power manager refer this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319

  • Macbook is unresponsive when closing lid

I just received my macbook unibody (Late 2008) in the mail a few days ago. I bought it off of eBay with apple care till 2012. It was working a few days ago, but i've been having serious problems with it. If it's not one of these problems it's the other: "when i close my lid and open it back up the display, keyboard, and trackpad are unresponsive. (When i reboot i gain function back....but if i close it again it will repeat the problem." & "When I restart the computer my airport card won't turn on unless i reboot several times"
_*MAIN QUESTION: Would applecare replace this???? AND IF THEY DID....would they give me a macbook unibody pro or a 2008-2009 unibody???*_

I would take it up with the eBay seller. Return it for a complete refund.
Then take the money and purchase an Apple refurb out of the Apple Store Online. With AppleCare of course.

  • Waking up a closed lid 2011 MBP

Hello. I just bought the new 2011 17" MBP. I bought an external Viewsonic monitor connected via a DVI adaptor. I also have an Apple USB extended keyboard connected to it and a Magic Mouse.
When I close the lid, the MBP goes to sleep. I cannot wake it up, using the keyboard or mouse. I have to lift the lid for it to wake up. I would like to use the MBP with my external monitor with the lid closed.
    Can anyone help?

I wouldn't be surprised if you run into this issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2770324
Basically, my new 2011 13" MBP does not detect the external monitor using DVI.
If your mac doesn't detect the display, and you'd close the lid, it will sleep.
Does your mac detect the display before you close it?
Perhaps you are experiencing another instance of incorrect DVI behavior with the Thunderbolt port.
Contact apple support to alert them to the issue.

  • Charging iPhone with closed lid on mbp

I've been researching, but found nothing this specific so far. Related links:

    - http://forums.mactalk.com.au/11/72536-snow-leopard-not-charging-iphone-while-lid -closed.html - This says it should work since Leopard and if it's not working to reset the SMC should fix it (I haven't tried yet): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=795007 This is not the same model, but for him it seems to not work anyway
    - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2126178 Suggests http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 for dealing with closed lid, but requires external display, among other things that don't come to this case (or so I guess)
To me, experience showed that closing the lid with the iPhone already connected works fine. I'm using a macbook pro 2009, as already hinted elsewhere. It's 13'' if that makes any difference.
But if I have the computer sleeping in the bag and want to just plug the iPhone for charging convenience, then it doesn't work. I have to remove it, open the lid, wait for charging to begin, then I can safely close, sleep, put it back on the bag, and it will be charging.
So I wonder how this is supposed to work, and if I can "fix" this behavior. Anyone knows?

I actually solved it on my own luck. Oddly enough, just need to remove and re-plug.
Here, this is a small chart:
1- Computer with lid open, up and running with energy - whatever AC or not.
normal behavior, everything as expected: plug in iPhone it starts charging.
2- Computer with closed lid, sleeping as blinking light indicate and plugged in AC power.
normal behavior, everything as expected: plug in iPhone it starts charging.
3- Computer with closed lid for long time, unplugged from AC power, no cables on it whatsoever.
plug in iPhone - nothing happens.
unplug it and plug in again in either port - it starts charging!
If you close the lid and don't wait it gets to sleep (that is, white blinking light - if you want to be sure, wait till the computer cools down, if it was hot - that's sleep mode) you'll get normal behavior right on the first plug time. The trick of plugging again seem to work always from my tests. So this is a undocumented feature that took me freaking long enough to uncover!
    Now it's aight!

  • Fan noise when tilting the MBP (Late 2008)

When I tilt my new MBP to the front or to the side (maybe 30 to 50°), it makes a louder noise than usual. Thus, this also occurs when I put the MBP on a notebook stand. I suppose, it comes from a fan. Another MBP I tried, did not make this noise.
When the notebook is just standing even on a table, I hear this buzzing sound we can read about in another thread. But really quiet. I have to put my ear quite close to the keyboard.
And I hear a quiet and deeper unbalanced sound. But this could also come from the hard drive.
Is the phenomenon I described a problem or could it turn into one? Might this noise (these noises) even get louder or might some part fail? Do some of you also hear this noise (these noises) on their MBP or MB?
As I feel that no device is abolutely perfect, I am a bit worried about getting the MBP exchanged. Everything else seems to be fine. None of the typical and widespread problems.
Is the mentioned phenomenon something I do not have to worry about too much and that can be repaired without any problems at a later date at a local store?
    Thank you in advance!

    Thank you for your answers!
Unfortunately we do not have the same service infrastructure in Germany as over here Apple distributes its products primarily through premium resellers. The original Apple stores are just starting in Europe. But the resellers have their own Apple certified service technicians. I hope the fan replacement really doesn't take longer than one workday.
Can each of the fans inside the MBP be replaced easily? Even the one on the graphic card? How many fans are in there?
Is it possible that this buzzing sound doeas not occur all the time?
This deeper unbalanced noise seems to come from another source. Somehow you could say it is a pulsation. Can you hear this noise as well?
Would you suggest me to get the MBP exchanged (maybe for a device with other problems) or repaired?

  • [SOLVED] Laptop doesn't suspend anymore when closing lid [GNOME 3]

    Hi there!
Since I upgraded to GNOME 3 recently, my laptop (Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG) doesn't suspend anymore when I close the lid. Instead, it just turns off the screen. If I choose suspend from the menu, it does suspend properly.
I googled a bit and found out that the option what to do on closing the lid was dropped in GNOME 3, setting suspend as default action. That's exactly what I want...
Also, I checked that option via gnome-tweak-tool and dconf-editor, and (surprise!) it was set to 'suspend'.
Anyone got an idea what to do to make it suspend again on closing the lid?
Last edited by perpetrator (2011-10-17 14:25:26)

Sorry to bother you again, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore...
Somehow it can't lock the GNOME session, because when I enter the above line from /etc/acpi/handler.sh manually as root in TTY1, I get this error:
** Message: Failed to get session bus: Befehlszeile »dbus-launch --autolaunch=c9375f4ea0008d92177b28db000009ae --binary-syntax --close-stderr« brach mit von Null verschiedenem Beenden-Status 1 ab: No protocol specified\nAutolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n
If I enter this command inside GNOME, everything works just fine, it locks the screen and suspends.
    EDIT:
Setting the XAUTHORITY environment variable properly did the trick. Therefore, I borrowed some lines from here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … losing_lid

  • When closed lid, drive tries ejecting cd that isnt there

hi just starting yesterday i noticed when i close the lid on my macbook it tries to eject a cd like every 15 seconds even though there isnt even a cd in the drive. its really annoying and it chews up my battery really quickly.
i repaired and verified disk permissions and it still didnt help. im using 10.5.7 and have never had any issues with my macbook since i got it in january.

I suspect that something is causing a restart on your MacBook when it tries to enter sleep. You can check this by just putting your MacBook into sleep mode without closing the lid. If the MacBook reboots instead of going into sleep then you've isolated this problem.

  • Hp beats 15-p058n - cracked screen when closing lid?

I brought this notebook at christmas just gone for my wife, ( 3months) She has been very careful with it no knocks no bangs. i purchased it from a well known outlet and it had marks over it but purchased as new from a well known retailer we did complain askng if it was a used notebook as didn't look new. but in the end left it... anyway to cut a very long story short my wife does use this laptop very often as she is disabled so it remains in one place at home. anyway i was using it the other evening and closed the lid down i heard cracking when i closed it down, so lifted it back up and notices a crack going along the monitor/screen. Of course this has upset my wife because it's her outlet to some normality in her life.. i could understand if it's been dropped of hit somehow, but only by closing the screen down after turn off it cracked. Now the funny thing is im using it to type this on here, no dead pixals no blotches anywhere the screen under neath the glass is perfect... if it was dropped or hit it would be, so clearly it hasn't been. I have since read of other posts where this has happened. the cracks in the screen are geting worse as and when i close it down another crack appears you can hear it. i'm not covered under warranty am i?... i'm not covered on my home insurance under accidental damage because i haven' done any damage expect close the screen?..... where do i stand? every repair shop i've called have no parts to help and i dont really want HP to repair it at a huge cost when it shouldn't of happened in the first place and it may happen again?
Any help would be much appreciated if someone can point me in the right direction?

  • Logging out when closing lid

For some reason my MacBook has logged out when I closed the lid a couple of times instead of going to sleep. The battery was at about 50% charge the last time it happened. Anyone else have this happen?

Ok, I realized for it to log out I have to have my computer go to sleep. I usually only have the display go to sleep b/c I heard it is bad to have you computer set to go to sleep that often. So there is really no way for me to make someone have to log in without putting my computer to sleep, or logging off and closing all my apps. ??
