Accessing Printer Port with Windows 7

Hello all,
I've been recently asked to port a Labview file from WinXP (x86) to Win7 (x64), and one of the problems I've come across is this infamous lockdown of I/O ports in Win7.  I've done lots of searching around but haven't found much that would seem to help me in my situation, so I thought I'd post and ask for your help.
Basically, yes, the parallel port is being used as a poor man's DIO in my situation; we're using the individual bits as discrete signals that can be either high or low to communicate between two computers; one is Windows, one is Unix.  We used to use cviVXDwrapper.dll to do this, but that is no longer working.  All I need to do is flip individual bits at the right moment, it's not banging any data through or actually adhering to any communications protocol.
I know that the easiest solution here would be to buy a cheap DIO card and call it good; at a matter of fact, I recommended that to my supervisor.  But he came back saying that "all the drawings would have to be changed" and there would be "a mound of cards to be bought" and we'd have to go through all these design revision change review boards...so, if there's any way to find a software solution instead of a hardware one, it would be easier and less time consuming.
I can't give my entire .vi because of intellectual property/security concerns but I can provide a few screenshots that show just how simple the code is; we're literally just reading individual pins on the Parallel Port.  Is it really that difficult to do this now with Windows 7 and Labview?
Attachment Notes:
1.  to_printer_port.jpg - Here we have a simple snippet of code that, if the boolean value coming in is true, writes to bit 1 of the printer port. If that output is high, it lights up an indicator on the front panel called "FPGA Config".
2.  from_printer_port.jpg - Another simple piece of code that reads a Printer Port pin and reports back in boolean whether it's high or low.

It has an example of using VISA resources to write to the Printer Port.  My guess is that to read you'd just swap out the write block for the read block (found under the Instrument IO/VISA area of the Function palette) .  Also note that pins 11 and 12 of the printer port *MUST* be grounded to keep timeout errors from occurring.

  • Very slow Access 2002 query with Windows 7

I need help troubleshooting consistently slow queries in an Access 2002 database with Windows 7.
I’m running a temporary query in a local copy of a back end database with only tables. The identical query will take just 2-3 seconds with Windows XP but 30-60 seconds with Windows 7. Multiple Windows 7 workstations are all slow and
all Windows XP machines run the query quickly.  I even used JetShowPlan on both workstations to compare and the plans are identical. Two tables are involved with rushmore used on the first and a full scan on the second table of about 150,000 records.
Even in XP Mode on the Windows 7 machine the query still takes only about 10 seconds. Anyone have any ideas why Access/Jet on Windows 7 can be so slow? Thanks for any ideas.
    Rick Collard

    Hi Tony,
Thanks for the pointer - I had found that one earlier and tried it - did not help.  I think the HP ProtectTools Security Manager is Normally loaded
on Laptops - my problem is on Workstation.  I did a test of 2007 Access in the Virtual XP Mode window - There is works 'normally'.
    To give you an idea how Slow a query in 2007 access/W7 is;
I started a search for part numbers with 'busbar' in their description...
on W7 - Database is LOCAL to WS and upgraded to Office 2007
I then opened an XP Mode window
Opened the 2007 Access DB to the 'normal' database located on fileserver.
    enter the same Part search
    counted to 10 - 19 Parts found
    Closed DB
    Closed XP Mode window
Waited about 2 minutes... same 19 parts found....  Wonderful!
I will wait till my MS Rep can get me in line for the Hot fix or MS releases it.  Till then I will teach the Users how to Use XP Mode.

  • How to share 10.6 OSX Server print queue with Windows 7 successfully?

I used Bonjour Print Services for a Windows 7 machine (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl999) to successfully connect to a Mac OX Server 10.6 print queue, and the following message is generated in the print log and CUPS log,
    "POST/printers/stormoncecar/ HTTP/ 1.1" 200 2205 Print-Job Successful-OK
There are no errors, however, nothing comes out of the printer.  It works for all the Mac OS Client machines, but not for any of the Windows 7 machines.
How to share print queue with Windows 7 successfully?

I'm back on this problem.  I thought I would give more details as I still can't print.
    Operating System: 10.6.8
Driver for Canon LBP6750 UFRII prints from Mac and prints from Windows 7.  However, printing from Windows 7 as you share the printer from your Mac does not print out anything and has no errors.

MF imageclass 4350 (black &white laser printer) compatible with WINDOWS 8.1?   WINDOWS 8.1 recognizes I have printer attached, but it says flatly "No driver!"  I have run all the drivers from CANON and then attached the printer.   But, still it doesn't work!   Nothing from CANON sez" SETUP...........

    Hi mybrojer.
I will be glad to assist you.
The file that you download from the Canon website is .ZIP file.  When you select [RUN], it unpacks the setup folder.  Please disconnect the printer from the computer and follow the instructions below to install the printer:
    Open your [Downloads] folder.
You will see two icons with the name: MF4350_MFDrivers_W64_us_EN.exe. Double-click on the yellow folder icon with this name.
In the folder you will see two listings for [Setup].  Double-click on the [Setup] that has the type as [Application].
The "MF Drivers Setup Wizard" will open.  Proceed through the steps and restart the computer.
After restarting the computer, connect the USB cable and allow the installation to complete.
    Print a document.
I hope that this information is helpful to you.  Should the error persist, or your need further assistance, please contact us at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666).

  • Wireless printer sharing with windows 7 and vista operating systems.

    hello can anyone help me?
i have a new HP pc with windows 7 OS, and have an epson PX710W 3in1 printer.
i want to connect a laptop with vista OS to share the printer (wireless set up).
the pc will print documents ok via wireless link, but when i power up the laptop it appears to inhibit the printing function (document will not print).
i have set up file/ print sharing but there is the problem. it appears to me that sharing is only possible between pc,s etc with windows 7 OS via the homegroup set up. Has  anyone encountered this problem at all, has anyone any ideas? or is it a configuration problem that i'm not aware of?

I found that I had issues with getting all of these to work - individually.  I have an XPPro (32) pc trying to print to Win7Ultimate printer - printer is shared with all settings wide open, works great with another 7 or Vista machine, but same errors
as above for XP.  I got it to work an old way, and then the "local port" way worked.  I don't really know why as yet, but I am investigating.
    My Solution -
    1. As stated in other posts, install the printer locally on the XP machine.  Make sure that it prints.
2. Connect the printer to the 7 machine, print a test, then change the file and print sharing options to "yes".  I also installed the "Universal Driver" for my printer - HP1200 Laserjet.
    3. Make sure that the Network type that the 7 machine sees is "Work" or "Home", not "Public". -  I don't know if this really  did anything or not, but I did make the change - mine thought the network was "Public".
    4. Go back to the XP machine, if you get errors when you add the "Local Port" as suggested, then do this -
    Warning Old Dos Trick -
         -  Open a Command Prompt, then type (without quotes) "net use Lpt1 \\COMPUTERNAME\PRINTERSHARE " - where "computername" is the name of the computer and sharename is the shared name of the printer
    on that computer.
        - you SHOULD see "command completed successfully", if not check to make sure that you have rights on the 7 machine.  Now you should be able to print a test page to the printer. CAUTION - it took awhile for the changes to
take, so you may have the hourglass looking at you for a few minutes. - Once you reboot this will not work as the connection is just for that session.
To explain: this command is the dos version of what happens when you re-route output to a different destination - thus any traffic to LPT1 goes to \\computername\sharename.
    5. After this worked, I then could add the "local port", as detailed earlier and had no errors.
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Wireless Printing Issue with Window 8

    hello there,
we have few window 7 & 2 window 8 laptop.
all window 7 laptops are working fine with Wireless Router.
but one of my window 8 laptop is not getting connected with my Wireless Printer.
is there any  solution for the same?
as i am been finding very difficult to set up all this things.
please let me know if any one of you can help me out in this matter.
my another window 8 laptop is working properly.
but in my new laptop with window 8, my printer is showing me OFFLINE only.
    Thanks in advance.
    regards...

Are you running 8 or 8.1.  There is a bug in the network default configuration in 8.1 that will cause this behavior.  If you have 8, are you connecting over Standard TCP/IP Port or WSD?
Did you already install a vendor driver?  Which device are you connecting to.

  • Officejet G85xi printer errors with Windows office 8

I recently purchased a new PC with Windows 8.  I downloaded the most current drivers for my Officejet G85xi.  Each time  I try to print I get one or two good pages and then the printer stops and an error pops up in the control menu.

I used the G85xi without issues (other than paper supply out) using Window XP on older PC.  The printer has not worked properly since it has been connected to HP Envy 700-074 running Windows 8.1.  When I am lucky I get 2 full pages of print before "print error" appears.  I have tried Printer Doctor, deleting the printer and re-adding it, set higher priority, checking USB 2.0 port connetion, etc.  It usually will finish a text document not much more than a single page, but PDF documents are very limited.  I have spent hours trying to print one 9-page PDF document.  Should I ditch what was a wonderful printer?  Should I ditch a new HP PC with Windows 8.1?   Even if I buy a new printer, can I trust it will not stop printing on page 2 or 3 in the middle of the page?

  • CS5 printing issues with Windows 7

I have recently upgraded to windows 7 64bit and CS5. My printer is a Xerox Phaser 8560. I cannot print any vector art from any creative suite program. The print preview is correct but when it prints, the image is small and on one side of the paper and a second blank page prints right after that. I did not have this problem with my previous XP and CS4. I have went to Xerox and downloaded the right printer driver for windows 7 64 bit and even upgraded my firmware. The only way I can print correctly is a bitmap. For instance, when I print from acrobat I always have to have "print as image" checked. It prints correct in photoshop too, It seems it will only print bitmaps from CS. Anything from Illlustrator, Indesign will not print correctly. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Please HELP! I cannot find any resolutions.

  • Printer compatibility with windows 8.1

My bank's website allows me to view and print images of my cancelled checks. When I was running Windows 7 my LaserJet 1020 worked just fine. But with Windows 8.1 it would not print the images themselves--just two empty boxes and surrounding text. I then purchased a new HP LaserJet Pro P 1102w after being told it was compatible with Windows 8.1. I now have the exact same problem with the new printer. I do not have this problem when I attach my laptop running Windows 7 to the new printer. I prints out everything. I short, I don't believe my new printer is fully compatible with Windows 8.1. I have been unable to download HP's "full solution." How can I get this on a CD?

    Hi Flyfish66,
The issue most likely lies with the browser you are using with Windows 8. It is probably a different version from when you were using Windows 7.
What browser are you using? AOL?
Try using another browser to see if have the same results. (Google  Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer)
Use another browser other then AOL, when downloading the drivers.
If you are able to print with the different browser, please contact AOL support for further assistance with using that browser.

  • Printing wirelessly with Windows Vista

Alright I just got our Vista laptop successfully connected to the TC wireless network.
Now I'm trying to print wirelessly with the Vista laptop, but when I go into "add printer" in the Vista control panel, it's unable to detect the printer. The printer is on.
My Macbook Pro is currently able to print wirelessly.
Anybody know what I can try?

I was able to add the printer on my Vista laptop with Bonjour on the disk that came with Time Capsule. Previously the laptop couldn't see the printer, but now it can wirelessly print.
