ACR-adjusted tiffs -- trouble actioning
I'm trying to leverage the ACR interface for certain users employing actions. I'd like to create a merged copy of the a doc (with many layers) and save out as a TIF, then reopen as a "camera raw" (CR) file. This process works fine, and you can even open this CR tif as a normal tif and plain save to update the content. Nicely done. But when _actioning_ any open as SO, place as SO, or open as CR the "assignment" to a CR tiff is skipped. I'm not sure how this assignment to CR is registered by the ACR plugin, but it just won't record as an action step (unless you toggle the dialogue checkbox, at which point it works, but certainly not as desired).
I think the above "bug" was experienced by Jeff a while back when someone was trying to open a batch of raw files as SOs in PS.
Is there any way to action adjusting the current PSD in ACR? What are users doing to keep (raw) files editable in light of the healing tools and painting?
Cross-posted in PS Mac forum.
By now I must have read your cross post in both forums about five times, yet I cannot follow what you are trying to convey. Must be my old age.

First, one cannot open a TIFF "as a camera raw (CR)" file. You can open a single-layer TIFF in Camera Raw, but it won't contain any RAW data.
Second, you cannot reopen a camera-raw-adjusted TIFF as "as a camera raw (CR)" file, for the same reason: it contains no raw data whatsoever. You can open it in Camera raw, though.

Third, if you manage to to open a "camera-raw-adjusted TIFF" directly in Photoshop—how you do that is a different matter—bypassing Camera Raw, then you necessarily MUST be disregarding the ACR adjustments, as Photoshop cannot read them without the benefit of ACR.

Forth: One cannot directly open a PSD in ACR.
Fifth: One cannot open a multi-layered TIFF (or any other flavor of multi-layered file) in ACR.
I am not trying to argue anything, I'm just trying to give you a possible explanation of why you have not received an answer. I am fairly confident that I am not the only one having trouble following your post.

Invert ACR Adjustment Brush Mask?
Is it possible to invert a mask created with the ACR adjustment brush?
I want to make an adjustment to everything except what I paint with the adjustment brush (with auto mask turned on). I know how to invert a selection in Photoshop, but don't know if it is possible in ACR. I'm using ACR version 8.2. on W7Jeff, Thank you for the clarification. Hopefully Adobe will add the functionality some day. Theoretically, I'd prefer to do most of my lighting adjustments in ACR for a number of reasons, but the ACR tools seem generally less polished than Photoshop. The ACR Adjustment Brush in auto mode seems easier to use than the Photoshop selection tools like the Quick Selection Tool, but not being able to invert is a significant handicap.

Yeah you shouldn't use ~ in general. That is a shortcut for "Your home directory."
This is not strictly true. ~ is a "meta-character" in Unix shells -- it is an instruction to the shell to substitute the path to a home directory. It only has meaning in a Unix shell command, and only if ~ is the first character in a file path name. Outside of a Unix shell ~ has no special significance (although other programs might adopt a similar convention).
I don't see any reason why Aperture would be doing tilde expansion, and if it is, it is doing it wrong. "March~May Asia Trip" is a perfectly legitimate name in both Mac OS and in Unix. There is nothing taboo about using ~ in a file name. This behavior (which I can confirm) is almost certainly an Aperture bug. -
Apply ACR autowhitebalance as an action to multiple images?
Is it possible to select a folder of TIFFS, have them be opened in Camera Raw, and use some sort of preset such as auto white balance and a few other tweaks and have them save over the group with those adjustments?
I suppose this is similar to asking if it is possible to set up an action inside camera raw to work on folders of tiffs that I would like to tweak in ACR.
So far, I have been unable to find a way....
Thank you.
I am running CS3 on a mac with OSx.It is not possible to open a "folder" of images as such. But you can open that folder in Bridge, highlight all of the TIF images, and then open them as a group in Camera Raw. Then, in Camera Raw, you can select all (there is a button for this) and then any adjustments you make to the previewed image will be applied to all images. Or, you can make the adjustments to one image, then select all, and click on the Synchronize button. Using that method you can choose which settings should be synchronized.

I convert with a third party tool some images in tiff (linear gamma) and I want edit them in ACR.
Is better keep them in linear gamma or is better convert them to a gamma corrected color space before import them in ACR?
Internally ACR works always in linear gamma even with jpeg, right?
Marco> my first edit in PS on linear image is tweak the exposure with a linear curve. Make the exposure slider in ACR the same thing?
These are vastly different.
1. The "exposure" adjustment in ACR increases the raw pixel intensities, like increasing the exposure would have done. This is a linear adjustment
b before the non-linear mapping.
Consequently, the linear adjustment becomes non-linear in the converted data.
Try it out: increase the exposure in ACR by one stop, then two stops, etc. and watch the displayed RGB values at the picker: very dark spots almost double, while bright spots increase only little.
2. The "linear adjustment" in PS works on the mapped data.
Try it out on several GREY spots: move the top right corner of the straight line in "curves" to the middle of the top edge (this corresponds to +1 EV). Make a selection on a dark spot and watch for the average under the histogram; turn the adjustment layer on and off. The RGB values got doubled. Now do this on a middle dark area: the same happens. Then pick an area close to but less than 128: you get close to 255. Try it with an area over 128, no matter how intense: you get 255. -
Opening adjusted Tiffs in PS with adjustments applied.
This is my workflow, edit raw file in Aperture, open up adjusted image in PS for further work, save image. The resulting tiff then shows up in Aperture no problem. Then maybe a day or so later whatever I may go back into Aperture and make a further adjustment on that tiff - if I then want to resize that tiff file for web etc using PS when I choose 'edit in PS' the file opens up but without the new adjustments?? The only way I've found to get round this is to export the tiff file to my desktop and open that one up in PS to resize etc. In LR all I had to do was select any of the resulting tiff files and I was given various options on whether to open it in PS with LR adjustments applied or not.
Any advice please?Interesting behaviour and one I can confirm. Only Adobe can indicate if this is intended or a bug.

Reset button for ACR adjustment brush
I use ACR and the adjustment brush on a daily basis. When making several corrections with the adjustment brush, each time I have to manually zero out the adjustments from the previous correction. A bit of a pain. If there were a reset button at the top to zero out all the adjustments it would greatly simplify this process.
It is clumsy but:
go to top of brush panel and double click on the "minus sign" just to the left of the exposure slider. This will reset everything but exposure. Then you must double click on the exposure slider itself to reset exposure. Of course, this is for the currently active brush.

When I open a RAW file in Photoshop CS5, ACR automatically comes up. Can I "force" or get ACR once JPEG's and TIFF's, are open on the screen?
I had these settings selected already. I can get RAW, JPEG, and TIFF's to open up in CS5. My question centers around being able to use ACR for all file formats.
As mentioned, when I open a RAW file in CS5, the photo automatically comes up in ACR (that's good). When I open up a JPEG, it does open up, but not in ACR. I'd like to know how I (if that's possible) to open up the JPEG and TIFF's with ACR ? -
How do I adjust Tiff. dpi resolution?
Hi, does anyone know how I can set a specific dpi resolution of my tiff file. I have opened it as a pdf in preview and can convert it to a tiff, but I don't know what resolution it is. I have to send someone a 300 dpi tiff file and don't even know how many dpi the application "preview" converts it to.
Also, is there a way to save a multiple page tiff? Thanks so much -LeeUse any image editing tool such as Photoshop Elements or Graphic Converter.

LR 1.3.1 Win XP, CS3
When CS3 saves TIFF images exported from LR that have layers, they are saved with:
ZIP Image compression
Per Channel Pixel Order
ZIP Layer Compression.
The Per Channel Pixel Order (RRGGBB) means than most other applications can't read the file.
The TIFF files need to be saved with Interleaved Pixel Order (RGBRGB).
The problem doesn't occur with TIFFs exported by LR when no layers are added in PS. It never happens when TIFF files are created by any other application than LR.
Lightroom is doing something that causes the problem. What can be done to correct the problem.
WilMackenzie Legler wrote:

Thanks
I think that's your hint. There is something wrong with the location you're trying to copy to, perhaps a lack of authorization. What happens if you copy the images to your desired location and then import to LR, telling the program that you want to leave the images where they are?
You didn't say what version of Lightroom you're using, nor what operating system it's running under, and those pieces of information might help somebody help you.

I am starting to use aperture but I am not a photography pro. I am also new to Mac.
Would anyone mind helping me understand what is going on with .tiff files?
I seem to get these when I scan using my HP 8500 Officejet (I guess this is when they come in) but I have only ever really seen .tif files.
When I go to open them in my ancient version of Adobe Elements or I go to post them on a Wordpress Blog or I go to open them in Photoshop on WinXP on my bootcamp install they are not even listed.
Thanks for any illumination.Hotwheels,
TIF and TIFF are the same thing. Tagged Image File Format.
TIFF files are lossless, meaning all pixel data in your original is saved. JPG, by contrast, are lossy, meaning after you save to JPG, you cannot get the *exact same* image back when you display it, but your eyes may not be able to tell.
I'm not sure "anything is going on" with your TIFF files related to Aperture.
When I go to open them in my ancient version of Adobe Elements or I go to post them on a Wordpress Blog or I go to open them in Photoshop on WinXP on my bootcamp install they are not even listed.
Are you implying you have non-TIFF files in the same directory that you can open with each of those programs? How do you think this is relate to Aperture?

Difference in TIFF and RAW import with ACR (how to fix)?
I'm experimenting with a workflow, so whilst this may seem like an odd thing to want to make work, I have a geniune reason for doing what's described below:
I have Canon CR2 RAW files from a 7D, Photoshop CS6 13.01 64bit, with ACR 7.1.0.354, running on Windows 7 64bit.
1. I import a CR2 image via ACR, with no changes to any sliders; opening it as Adobe RGB (1998); 16bit
2. I then save the image as a TIFF file, leaving "ICC Profile: Abode RGB (1998)" selected in the Color section of the file save dialog
3. If I then close all files, and reopen the CR2 and TIFF image, they (as expected) appear to be identical
4. After closing all files again, I then open the CR2 and make an exposure adjustment (e.g. -1.00)
5. Using Bridge, I select the TIFF file, right click and select Open in Camera Raw. I make the same exposure adjustment as for the CR2
6. Now, the adjusted CR2 and adjusted TIFF are different. A colour shift is noticable, and for a severe exposure change (i.e. +4.00) the shadow detail in the CR2 is a lot lighter
Here are two cropped areas from the files (with a 4 stop push), showing some branch/leaf and grass detail respectively. The TIFF has a greener colour cast for the grass, but much darker shadows:
TIFF
RAW
I appreciate that the CR2 is still a RAW file, and as such has the original Bayer pattern data, but is there any way I can make ACR adjustments to a TIFF (taken from a CR2) to behave in the same way as the original CR2?ssprengel, Jeff, JJMack - thanks for the constructive replies
station_two - after your use of mildly aggressive language ("What seems to escape your grasp") in your first post, I had money that your subsequent response(s) would be on the lines of "I'm too busy to explain it to people like you". Thankyou for confirming my expectations (sometimes I wonder if some people engage in forum discussions for the sole purpose of trying to get themselves [and possibly others] riled)
So... back to trying to find a construcive solution: If the algorthirms for the adjustments in ACR do operate directly on the Bayer data (before demosiacing to RGB per pixel) then operating on the TIFF (or any other demosaiced RGB data) will indeed be a non-starter. Without (probably unlikely) input from an Adobe developer however, we can't know for sure.
> So RAW numbers after debayering to RGB are linear with numbers of photons within a particular color (R, G or B), while TIF numbers are assumed to be linear with human-vision sensitivity
Understood (I'm familiar with gamma, camera sensor behaviour, exposing to the right etc). Ultimately though, it should be possible to produce an RGB file that is also linear (i.e. not adjusted for human vision) to then bring back into ACR. However, if that's simply not possible with ACR, then that's also a non-starter (and wouldn't help anyway if the adjustments operate on the Bayer data directly).
I did look briefly into opening the RAW as a smart object, but sadly I didn't think that'd help. The goal I'm trying to achieve is an experimental idea to blend parts of images together from multiple exposures; but to achieve a single RAW file with that data as if it came from the camera (thus it could be brought into ACR to get the benefit of - from my point of view - the useful and intuitive adjustment sliders). Clearly that would require reverse engineering the particular RAW format for the camera being used (and each and every camera you'd want to support) - thus, it's not really practical.
I'd hoped to be able to convert (without edits) the RAW images into TIFF (or some other lossless RGB container that I can read programmatically), do the blending to produce a single TIFF, and then bring that back into ACR.
Whilst it's more convoluted, I suppose it might be possible to generate the unedited TIFF files purely for the purposes for getting data about the images, then using that to create a set of masks. Then, as Jeff suggests, perform adjustments to the RAW files in ACR, and use the masks to blend the imported (and now corrected) RAWs into one image. Not ideal, but perhaps worthy of more experimentation. -
PhotoShop CC will not play Layer Adjustment Actions Correctly
My computer has PhotoShop CC installed on a brand new Dell Windows 7 computer. Previously I used CS4 and it worked great, but now I'm having issues with CC playing back any Action that has layer adjusments. I'll record an action consisting of an edited layer adjustment such as curves, levels, brightness/conrast, etc., and then when I play it back the layer adjustment applied is the default 0. For instance, here I clicked "Create New Action" and labeled it "Curves Layer TEST":
add a new curves layer adjustment and label it "Brighten":
Then I add a few points to the curve (overly brightened to demonstrate my issue):
then I hit the Stop Recording button. But when I look at the curve values in the Actions box of the very curve layer I just recorded, it says the Preset Kind is Default. Why doesn't it say Custom??? The Properties box read "Custom" as I was editing the curve!
So anyway, I open up my nexy photo and play the Brighten action I just created...
and nothing happens to the image. Oh, it now has a curves layer on top, but it's the Default straight line. What happened to the curve I edited and recorded!!??
What's the deal? This is the same process I used in CS4, CS2 and every other PhotoShop incarnation and it worked fine, until CC. Is this a bug? Or is there a new process to creating layer adjustment actions???Adobe added the adjustment panel in CS4. Adobe also changed how the action recorded records adding adjustment layers in CS4. Before the Adjustment panel when you clicked on one of the add adjustment layer icons Photoshop would open the adjustment type options dialog window which you would set and commit. When you committed the settings the action recorder would record a single step that added the adjustment layer with the setting you set. After Adobe added the adjustment panel the action recorder records a step Make adjustment layer Adjustment type preset default as soon as you click on the adjustmet type icon. If you then make changes to the settings when you move onto the next Photoshop operation the action recorder records a second step Set current adjustment layer to type preset kind custom and settings. Adobe also introduced many problems with the adjustment panel. The two step recoding can be a problem because it possible to add steps between the two steps and the step set current adjustment layer will fail if the targeted layer was changed by the addition. The adjustment panel also has two options in its fly-out menu the change Photoshop operation. They can break new and old actions that add adjustment layers. For how adjustment layers will get added may not be the way they were added when the action was recorded. These options work more like global Photoshop Preferences actions have no control over. However the options do not alway work like set. So if you try real hard you can record actions that add adjustment layers that will alway work the way you designed your action to work. Adobe does not want to fix these problems. I tried to get Adobe to fix these bugs for years. I have now given up.

Actioning Dr Brown's Edit Layers in ACR script
The script can be found here:
Dr. Brown's Adobe Photoshop CS5 Scripts
http://www.russellbrown.com/scripts.html
I would like to run this script as a batch action on images via Bridge using Batch or Image Processor Pro.
The problem is my action doesn't record my hitting the "Done" button in ACR to close the window, so the batch gets hung up on an open ACR window on the first image.
Other than hitting the done button in ACR while recording the action (which isn't working in playback,) what else can I do?s.mahn wrote:

Because Photoshop can't record a action with the "Done" button (because unless Photoshop actually opens an image that step won't be recorded).
You'll need to record an actual "Open" step in order to record an action involved with Camera Raw. Then in the Batch you'll need to select the option Override Action "Open" Commands when running the Batch. It's useful to note that you shouldn't actually make any image adjustments (cause they will be picked up) and only set the Workflow Options inside of Camera Raw...
But, and here's a potential gottcha, I'm not sure an action can actually record the calling of a script and it's settings (I'm pretty sure a script can call anaction). -
TIFF & JPEG renders of RAW files appear different when viewed in Bridge
I am working with the demo of Photoshop CS6, with ACR 7.1. CS6 System Info will appear at the bottom of this post. Summary: AMD Phenom II x6 1090T, 16GB RAM, Win7-64bit, nVidia GTX 460 video w/1GB RAM, approx. 2.5 TB free space on multiple internal physical drives, Canon 50D, CR2 files. I have a camera profile generated through Profile Editor, and the monitor is calibrated with i-1 Match.
I have been practicing with the new Basic Panel controls (Process 2012). When I felt that I was getting the hang of them I started saving JPEG and TIFF files and noticed differences between what appears in Bridge and ACR. I worked on this for some time and searched out some other discussions in the Forum which seemed to talk about similar results. I have now tried Image Processor via Bridge, Save Image in ACR, and Open>Save manually in PS CS6. By whatever route, the TIFFs and JPEGs are different (lighter in the following examples, but this is not always the case), while PSD saves seem to be close, but not identical to the CR2 when viewed in Bridge or Photoshop. Here is a screen capture of Bridge thumbnails which show the differences.
I hope the labels come through legibly. The two images on the second row are CR2 and PSD respectively. What is really odd to me is that when I resaved the PSD file as a TIFF, the same sort of difference shows up in the TIFF. (See _MG_7960_via_PSD.tif above.) I have uploaded the CR2, its XMP, a TIFF and a JPEG on Sendspace (107 MB). I did this earlier in my experiments and regret that the file naming is not as informative as might be.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/t0lhko
I have run a few other ACR adjusted CR2 images through Image Processor and seen a variety of differences between the rendered files and the RAW versions. The differences seem to be in Exposure and Contrast. Most of these looked somewhat darker, unlike the examples above.
I will happily provide any other information on request. Thanks!

Installed TWAIN devices: NONEThanks very much for that lead, NormanPCN. I do have Auto Tone checked, though the rendered files in the example above do not have XMP sidecars. I will try unchecking Auto Tone even so, and post back when I see what happens.
Thanks again,
Kieren
EDIT: Bingo! I took Auto Tone off in ACR Preferences (in Bridge) and the non-RAW files immediately regenerated thumbs and previews. They now are indistinguishable from the PSD. There is still the very slight difference which I mentioned between the PSD and the CR2. While that seems odd, it is small enough to be relatively trivial.
Many thanks!
