ACR and the Bridge thumb regeneration problem.

I just installed the 8.4 RC version of ACR to see if it fixed a bug that appeared back in version 7.2. It did not.
The bug appears in Bridge where Bridge randomly and repeatedly regenerates thumbnails. The bug is discussed in several threads on the Adobe Bridge forum. It is a difficult and mysterious bug because it appears to effect only a few people (maybe others don't notice). And those affected report different suspected causes.
Everyone in those threads assume the bug is within Bridge. But in my case, I believe the bug is caused by ACR.
In my version of the bug (Bridge CC on Win7) when I point Bridge at a folder of images, the progress wheel in the bottom left corner will spin and report "xxx thumbnail extractions" while xxx counts down. If I leave that folder and return later (with no changes made to the images) it will regenerate thumbnails and count down again. But not for the entire set of images, just some of them. By "return later" I mean 1 second later.
I've saved proir versions of the "Camera Raw.8bi" file. If I use version 7.1.0.354 of Camera Raw, regeneration of thumbnails ceases. Any version greater than 7.1 causes regeneration.
I have a theory, but ask for help or comment on the likelihood of my theory.
When Bridge scans the images in a folder and compares them to the existing thumbnails in the cache, that comparison has to involve dates. If the date of a thumbnail file is different than the date of the image file, Bridge needs to regenerate the thumbnail.
I don't know what dates Bridge is using to compare cached thumbs to images. I'd guess they are what we see as "Date File Modified".
I don't know where Bridge is getting those dates. Is Bridge getting the dates from the Operating System file management service? Has Bridge stored the thumbnail date in the cache index, and compares it to the image date? Because the regeneration comes and goes depending on the version of ACR, it would seem that Bridge is asking ACR for one of the dates.
All programs display dates in human readable form (Example: 7/15/2013 1:11:50PM). But dates are stored in some other form. I don't know what format is used, but it's probably some floating point format.
My theory is that the dates Bridge uses are in stored in different formats or different precisions of floating point. So, when Bridge compares two such dates they sometimes look unequal when in fact they are the same.
Different CPUs with different math chips might behave differently on critical floating point ops. This would explain why some users suffer the problem while others do not, even if they have the same version of OS.
My knowledge of floating point operations dates back to the IBM mainframes of the 70s. I have no idea how modern CPUs work. I'm hoping someone with current knowledge can comment on my theory. Also hoping the theory reaches Adobe techs, who currently appear to be stumped by this problem.

I found a folder of about 60 images, of which about 80% always repeated extractions, even if changing focus to another application for a couple of seconds.
If I batch-toggled Enable Lens Profile Corrections checkbox on every file in the folder, the repeat extractions stopped. If I toggled them back again, it started again.
This didn't surprise me too much, as the pre 7.3 bug, where repeat extractions occured when active Lens Profiles were combined with touching edge crops (fixed in 8.2), was also Lens Profile related.
Unfortunately, I couldn't isolate the combining factor which causes the repeats in combination with 80% of the files in that folder. Totally stumped.
As ssprengel suggests, it might be date/time-related. I did once notice some weirdness with file system timestamps in the Bridge cache folder. Maybe my 'bad' folder had files with a significant date/time.
Meanwhile, I now disable Lens Profile Corrections by default, which is the factory default setting. I only enable it on some shortlisted images. Repeat extractions a greatly reduced now. YMMV

  • Bridge CC and the constant thumbnail regeneration problem.

I'm one of many who suffers from Bridge CC constantly regenerating thumbnails. There are multiple threads about the problem, with different descriptions and different theories of the cause.
I recently tried an experiment. I replaced Camera Raw.8bi (version 8) file in the CC folder with the Camera Raw.8bi file from my old CS6 folder (version 7.1.0.354). That worked OK. Bridge CC and Photoshop CC work with the older version of Camera Raw, and the constant regeneration of thumbnails ceased.
Unfortunately, installing the old version of Camera Raw causes Bridge CC to regenerate thumbnails for all folders on the first visit, even though the files are cached and unchanged. But after that first visit, no regeneration occurs.
I have no idea why that is, but I think the experiment gives good evidence that the problem lies in the Camera Raw code and not in the Bridge CC code itself.
None of the various threads I've seen give me any confidence that Adobe has acknowledged this problem, or is even aware of it. And I'm not sure of the best way to get their attention. I've seen references that say Adobe bug reporting should be done on the photoshop.com website. I've tried that in the far past for different issues, but with no success. However, with no known alternative, I've made the following post:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/bridge_cc_re_caching_thumbnails?rfm= 1
I encourage others to "reply" to that post. Maybe if enough people respond, Adobe will notice and acknowledge.
If anybody knows a better way to report bugs (and get acknowledgement), please share.

    Been there, done that:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/unneccesary_bridge_thumbnail_and_pre view_extraction
They know about it, they just don't know how to recreate it.
Best thing we can do is reliably recreate the fault. My workaround is to only enable Lens Profile Corrections when necessary, as it is a combination of that and some other factor(s) which seems to trigger it.
If you read all the discussions, you'll see that there are two bugs which produce the same symptoms. One introduced in probably ACR 6.1, whichg was fixed in 8.2; and the other was introduced in 7.3 and is ongoing.

I reloaded iTunes 10 (64 bit) successfully, but the problem remains the same.
    Any suggestions?

I looked in the folder from which I want to synch photos, but there is no such thing as an "ipod photo cache" in that folder, or sub-folders, as suggested in the link which you were nice enough to provide.
I have also tried removing photos from my iPad2 Photos App, and "iTunes has stopped working" shows up  again as soon as I click on the "Synch photos from" button.

  • IOS 7 and the 'greyed out' WiFi problem

    Hi,
Looking for any solutions to this:
I upgraded to iOS 7 with no problems initially
After about 24-36 hrs I noticed I could no longer access websites via the WiFi connection, so I restarted the phone (a 4S on the Bell Canada network).
Since then, the WiFi slider has been greyed out and I can't access WiFi networks - with the exception of about an hour or two coincidentally around the time of the 7.0.2 release.
The WiFi button on the control centre appears to work, but of course doesn't actually function as designed.
So far I've tried the following:
    Power on & off
Reset the phone (home & power buttons until Apple logo shows)
    Reset network settings
Various versions of having the phone in or not-in airplane mode while doing the above
    Renaming the phone without appostrophies.
    Reinstalling iTunes & re sync
    Upgrading to 7.0.2
Completely wiping the phone and reinstalling everything  from iTunes (painful, I know)
Going into the store that sold me the phone (I won't say here, but they weren't very nice about Apple)
None of the above have worked.
Some reading suggests it could be the phone's chipset, but I'd argue that as it's connected to WiFi just fine a couple if times.
The only idea I've read and not yet got round to trying involves freezing the handset.
Anyone else with any other ideas?
    Thanks!

    Tony,
I've been reading up on this 4S wifi greyed out topic for the past several days too. I have a 5 and I don't have the wifi greyed out problem (knock on wood).
There's been quite a huge volume of discussion on this issue, with some people suggesting that there is a hardware defect, while others finding it just too coincidental that so many people would have this same problem on the same occassion, ie upgrade to iOS7 or 7.0.1 or 7.0.2.
The strangest thing about this: there's a user, carolinelewis, who is on her second new replacement 4S from Apple but they still show wifi greyed out after a while!
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4638071?start=300&tstart=0
    (page 21 of the thread).
Some people swear by the freezer method, some say the hot dryer method worked for them. Some say using either methods would get it fixed, some say the problem returns after some days.
My thoughts is that both freezer and hot dryer methods are actually taking the phone out of its operational temperature range.
    Environmental requirements of 4S:
    Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
    Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
This action may have cause the 4S to do a complete initialization when returned to normal temperature, but these 2 methods appear to be last ditch efforts.
What I'd favor is power cycling the 4S, which can be achieved by running it completely out of battery, as shown in this Youtube video: http://youtu.be/o_ws5srnVVM
then plug in power and just may work for you.
I've also come across this person's workaround: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzb5LNB9nIA
which may work for the 4S on iOS7 (it was posted for iOS6).
The steps this gentleman proposed appears to be worth a try. His strategy is to put the iphone into airplane mode, then do a hard reset.
Now, I have had my Thinkpad (Windows7) laptop's wifi freeze up akin to the behavior of 4S on iOS, ie can't turn on wifi radio via software, just simply refuses to see SSID of wifi router, won't join, etc. I've always been able to get things back to normal by power cycling the laptop. In some freak instances, even shutdown won't work, I would pull the battery out of the laptop to get eveything back to normal.
So my thoughts on this 4S wifi button grey out is that there is something in the iOS7 upgrade process that caused the wifi circuitry to freeze up and need a complete restart from powered down state.
The fact that the iphone doesn't have an easily removed battery makes it harder, and I suspect the freezer and dryer technics are an indirect way of acheiving total power off (battery not supplying power due to extreme high or low temperatures).
Furthermore, I've read that some people fixed their wifi greyed out problem by deleting older apps that may not be fully compatible with iOS7 and thus locking it up. Well, if that were true, then it may explain why the problem returns for some people. We won't know who upgraded which app.
And of course, there are instances where the wifi hardware that happen to be in a marginal state. Kind of like a PC working fine, installing updates, then stalling on reboot because the boot sector failed or some driver got stuck during initialization stage. This may explain why for some people the 4S had been working just fine but got broken wifi after the upgrade.
Best of luck to you in your efforts to get this problem fixed.

The Canon 6D id NOT supported by ACR 6.7.1. It was supported for the very first time in ACR 7.3 whch requires CS6 to run.
Therefore you will never be able to open raw CR2 files from the 6D directly in CS5.
If you do not plan on upgrading, you can download the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.3 (always use the latest version, it's not tied to your version of Photoshop at all), install it like any other application and then run it on each batch of CR2 files to convert them to raw DNG files that you can then open in your version of Photoshop and ACR.

  • "Could not initialize the application's security component" already erased mozilla directory containing profiles and the other in x86, problem persists!

This has just happened. But I have erased the mozilla directories containing the profiles and as well the both mozilla directories in program files x86. Yet when Firefoz is reinstalled, problem recurs.
Receive again the message "Could not initialize the application security component."
Have looked at the fixes available. Those appear not to work.
Anyone else with ideas? Maybe some hidden files that I can search for on my computer, and erase?
I'm suspecting I need really a thorough erase of anything connected with Firefox, to solve this issues. Thought though I had found everything.
Not relishing the prospect of erasing the hard-disc to fix this, though that has 100% probability of working.

Rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) in the Firefox Profile Folder in case there is a problem with the file.

alphasonic, Welcome to the discussion area!
Is your "wireless router" an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or another AirPort Express (AX)? If not, you probably will not be able to do this.
The Ethernet port on the AX is active ONLY when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly connect to a network. Unfortunately most (nearly all) are NOT compatible with Apple's WDS and therefore this is not possible.

  • ACR and the Custom Settings option on the flyout menu...

I am currently running the trial of CS4 to see if its worthy of my hard earned cash. I normally run CS3 and an old version of ACR (4.4.1) specifically for the reason that I can mass process a group of images by using the Custom Settings option in the flyout menu. (Select a file, adjust it, export it, select another or 10 from the same group, hit Custom Settings, and viola, all now have the same adjustments)
Every ACR 'update' since that one took this option away from me.
So, here's my quandary... Keep CS3 (and my hard earned $'s) using the old ACR... or figure out how to replace the quick adjustment options I had in CS3 with the New-and-Ever-So-Wonderful CS4...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!
    Dan

You can open hundreds of files in ACR, slect and adjust the first one, choose sunchronize and apply the adjustment to all open files.  Try looking at the tutorials on AdobeTV etc, and
here's some essential reading for you [CLICK HERE] .

  • Restoring original iWeb from iLife CD installation and the iWeb 1.1 problem

I was thinking of reinstalling the original iWeb from iLife CD and then republish my changes, but didnt want to make matters worst or lose my current iWeb online...
Anyone tried this? or any tips?

You need the following to succesfully downgrade to 1.0.1:
    1) a backup of your iWeb 1.0.1 Domain file from username/Library/Application Support/iWeb before you started using iWeb 1.1
    2) the iWeb 1.0.1 upgrade package
    3) iLife installer disk
To do it you need to:
    1) Delete the receipts first:
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWebApp.pkg
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWeb_101.pkg
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWeb_11.pkg
    2) Delete the iWeb application.
    3) Then reinstall iWeb from your iLife disk. Then update back to 1.0.1.
    4) Put your old 1.0.1 Domain file into the correct place and open iWeb 1.0.1!
I downgraded to 1.0.1 using a backup of my 1.0.1 Domain file successfully with no problems.

  • Problems starting PE8 - and the answer to my problem!

    Hi Everyone,
The other day, I was having a problem starting PE8... When I started PE8 from the desktop icon, the Welcome Screen would appear, but the buttons which would normally allow a person to: Open a Project, Create A Project, etc., were all shaded out and could not be clicked. In fact the only thing I could do was to Take a Tour!   After taking the tour, I was able to click on a GO button, which then took me into Organizer, rather than into Premiere Elements. Clearly, something was wrong. I completely uninstalled PE8 and removed all instances of PE8 from my Program Files x86 directory. Yet, when I reinstalled PE8, the sympton persisted.
Here's the answer to the problem I was experiencing:
After trying to start PE8, over and over, many times, I noticed that right before the Welcome screen began to appear, there was a small (2" X 3") dialog box that said that I did not have any available memory. How could that be?! I have 12GB of memory on my computer! Hmmmm. Wait a minute! I remember that as I entered PE8 in the past, at the bottom of the Welcome Screen, it said that I had/have 2GB of memory for storage available.   So, as I went in to the shaded out Welcome Screen again, I looked at the little bar graph which shows how much storage memory one has available from Photoshop.com.  My bar graph was maxed out!   I then went to photoshop.com (which I have never used at all!) and I logged in with the same login that I used when I registered PE8.  Much to my surprise, someone else's pictures had been dumped into my account/storage on Photoshop.com. I then deleted ALL the pictures that were on my photoshop.com account.  I also changed my login & password.  I logged out of photoshop.com and then (as I had done many times previously) attempted to open up Premiere Elements 8 and IT OPENED AND STARTED PERFECTLY.
The moral to this story is that:   If you, or (as in my case) someone else maxes out your photoshop.com storage, you won't be able to get into Premier Elements until you either obtain more storage from Adobe, or until you delete things that you have in that storage area.   Note that when you install and register PE8, a Photoshop.com account and gallery area are created for you.   If that account/gallery is ever filled to it's initial 2GB capacity, you won't be able to start PE8 properly.   Likewise, if you can't start/open PE8 normally, then go to photoshop.com, log in, and check to see how much memory has been used on your photoshop account.
Last, but not least, know that the memory problem (not having any more Storage Memory available) is NOT a problem on YOUR computer. Rather, it is referring to the amount of Memory/Storage that Adobe gives you for free on THEIR computer.
    Best Regards,
    Kent

Hmmm. They would have to have the same login and password,  which is highly unlikely. Nevertheless, while my login (email address) remains the same, I now have a new password.   I figured that you would find my 'solution' interesting.    I never would have thought the problem was with the photoshop.com account which I had never used.   But, as we all know, the moment we assume anything, Murphy's Law kicks in and fools us!   Thanks again for all your help.  Kent

  • How do I open a raw image with the Photoshop raw plug in as opposed to the Bridge raw plug-in.

I read in a book on adobe raw that it is often useful to open an image at the same time with the adobe camera raw bridge plug in and the Photoshop camera raw plug in.
I can open a raw image in photoshop but I suspect I am not actually getting access to the camera raw plug in as none of the controls present in the bridge raw plug seem to be available from within Photoshop.
Of course I can access bridge and the bridge raw plug in by opening bridge from within Photoshop but this is not what I want to do.  I would like to open the image using the photoshop raw plug in not the bridge plug in.
    Clueless . . . and confused.
    --Kenoli

Thanks for the discussion.  It is interesting.  Let me clarify a bit regarding my issue.
I am using Mountain Lion OSX on a mac, of course, and CS6.  I have been using Aperture, a piece of Apple Software similar to Light Room to organize my images, opening them from Aperture in Photoshop to edit them, as I am both familiar with Photoshop and like the way it does things better than Aperture.  I recently started using CS6 and working with Adobe Camera raw 7, which I think is the version that comes with CS6.  All the info I can get from the web site, including a very nice tutorial from Adobe on camera raw, simply tells me to open it from Bridge.  When I do this, I get a nice set of sliders and other adjustments specifically associated with Adobe Camera Raw and the camera I am using.
I can open a file in Photoshop using the method SkillRooster suggests and, sure enough, it opens it with the camera raw plug-in (if I simply open the image by double clicking on it it opens in photoshop, no plug-in).  If I then go to bridge and open it from there, I don't get a second instance of Camera raw, it simply points me at the instance opened through Photoshop.
However, when I open a raw image in Photoshop from Aperture  (raw images open with no problem) I simply get the Photoshop interface, not the camera raw plug-in, the same as if I had double clicked on the image to open it from outside of Aperture.  I am trying to figure out if there is some way to open an image from Aperture in Photoshop so that it opens in the camera raw plug-in.  One possibility I could imagene is to open it in Photoshop and from there open it in the plug-in.  The only thing I see regarding this in Photoshop is a menu item that lets me close the image and open Bridge, which doesn't help me with my Aperture issue.  I could decide to switch to bridge, but with the thousands of images I now have in Aperture, this would be quite a bit of work.  I may just have to work with both going forward.
The root of my original question comes from something I recently read in a book by Bruce Fraser on Camera Raw which is excellent, but it focues on CS 5.5 as he died before being able to update it.  In that book he describes a trick he uses where he opens the raw image in a plug-in in Bridge and then opens it a second time using a plug-in in Photoshop.  This give him a chance to compare adjustments between the two open images.  As I mentioned above, when I try to do this by starting with Photoshop and then going to Bridge, it points me at the same instance.  I can't open it in Bridge and then Photoshop since once it is open in Bridge, it won't let me into Photoshop without closing the image in Bridge.  I was thinking there might be something in Fraser's method that would help me with my Aperture issue, but can't reproduce what he describes.
Perhaps this was possible in CS5.5 but no longer  in CS6.
Another work around I can imagine is to do all my raw editing from Bridge and then save the file as a DNG file in Aperture.  I suspect that after that, I am stuck with doing any more raw editing using the Aperture camera raw funcions, which are a bit lacking compared with Adobe Camera Raw.
Hope I am being clear here about my dilemma.  Any help would be welcomed.

  • What is a table containing sales order and the contract it refers to

    Hi,
    I have a following problem (ECC6.0):
A sales order is created in VA03 and referenced to a contract. I need to locate the table or tables (or FM) which contains the information of the sales order number and the contract number.
Problem with VA03 is that I can see both numbers in the document flow screen; i.e. sales order (Doc.no) is xxxxx and the Preced.Doc field contains the contract number. However, this is only an ALV view. I cannot get anywhere from the program SAPMV75F.
I have checked table VBAK and it contains most of dat but not the link itself as it has any sales document. I need to have an entry containing the link between a given sales order (+item) and the contract.
Instead of creating with "Create with reference" and select Contract (which you need to refer to),  the system is defined so that contract is used with a hierarchy customer. Debugging of creating did not help as the linking was conducted in the background without activation of debugging screen. I'm not an SD and no experience with contract.
    Help is highly appreciated,
