Acrobat 10 prints square characters instead of actual characters on paper copies

Hello,
We use Acrobat 10 standard in a Windows 7 64-bit enterprise environment.  The printers involved are Xerox copiers using the latest PostScript 3 drivers.
We are currently having an issue where we print a document and on the paper copy, some of the characters are replaced with a square character.  The problem occurs when printing a PDF with Acrobat 10.  The problem does not occur when printing with Acrobat 9 but we did a company wide upgrade to 10 so 9 is no longer available.
I read elsewhere that one of the solutions was to use Pre-flight to check for issues prior to printing.  However, the standard version of Acrobat does not have that feature.  I also used the print as an image option, which works, however the quality is severely degraded, even at 600 dpi.  I have also tried printing to the Xerox copiers with the PCL drivers and that prints ok but the margins and character sizes are distorted so we need to use PostScipt.
While this problem applies to many of our documents, the most commons ones that have the issue are PDFs that have been edited to include additional pages from another PDF so they are combined into one larger PDF.
The current workaround I have is to save the PDF file as a PS file, then double-click the PS file to have the distiller regenerate the PDF.  Afterwards it prints just fine.  However, since we have thousands of PDF documents with this potential problem, it is quite counter-productive to have to do this workaround to each document.
Per Adobe support, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat 10, I have also tried printing with Adobe Reader 11 and same problem occurs.  However, it will print fine with Adobe Reader 9.   Updating to the latest version of Acrobat 10 (10.1.5) has had no improvement.
I have included a sample below of what it looks like on paper.  Is there a setting in Acrobat 10 standard that I could possibly try that may work for us?

I'm a Windows user, so I may not have this exactly right, but printing to PDF from Print Booklet on Mac is a two-step process -- first you printto Postscript file using the Acrobat 9 ppd, then you distill the file. • Square boxes instead of Japanese characters in pdf output of a crystal rep

    Hi All,
Did anyone of you ever faced such an issue, where the pdf output of a crystal report shows square boxes instead of Japanese characters when the output is saved in pdf. However the crystal report output looks perfect. I have saved the ouput in xls and rtf formats the characters look perfect as required, the issue we have is when the output is saved as pdf.
I have language pack installed on my machine.
My guess is that the few Character's width is not sufficient and few Characters in other fields appear perfect in pdf. I have to test this, it might take few days before I can access this report. Before that I want to gather information. If anyone has solution to this issue please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Ravi

    Hi,
Could you please answer the following questions
1.What version of Crystal Reports are you using?
Go to Help-> About to find out.
2.What is the font you are using on the report?
Try to change the font style to MS Gothic or Arial Unicode MS, most preferably MS Gothic.
And export the report to PDF format.
    This may help you

  • PDF report printing is displaying '?' mark instead of thai characters

    Hi All,
When trying to print PDF report I am getting question mark "?" for thai characters.
In browser it is showing properly. The problem is happening only when I open pdf file.It is showing "?" mark instead of thai characters.
I tried developing simple application in apex.oracle.com and I could reproduce the problem. It is showing "?" mark.
    Below is the link:

Thai characters are displaying properly outside Apex.So there is no problem with BI Publisher.
I also tried the suggestion given in below link but no luck
Re: Cannot print out Chinese , show as '?' in pdf report
When I try the same thing in apex.oraclecorp.com it is working fine .I could clearly see thai characters. It is working fine
    My Adobe version is 8.x
Is there any difference compared to apex.oraclecorp.com and apex.oracle.com settings for BI publisher?
    nls_language on server = 'THAI_THAILAND.TH8TISASCII and' 'PlSqlLanguage = AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8'
System Locale is set to thai and also the browser encoding set to thai windows
Thanks in advance for your inputs.

    Hello Mark,
I recommend to post this query to the [BusinessObjects Enterprise Administration|BI Platform; forum.
This forum is dedicated to topics related to administration and configuration of BusinessObjects Enterprise, BusinessObjects Edge, and Crystal Reports Server.
It is monitored by qualified technicians and you will get a faster response there.
Also, all BOE Administration queries remain in one place and thus can be easily searched in one place.

  • Creating a PDF from a SAAS app creates boxes instead of Japanese characters

I'm using an online app (Unleashed Software) to "print" invoices, and the printed invoices show boxes instead of Japanese characters. The really weird thing about this problem, is that it occurs only on certain devices. I've tested on Macs, Windows, Android, and iOS, and on some devices I get the problem, and on some devices I don't. It's not just a Windows problem, or a iOS problem. Additionally, I use different browsers, from Chrome, to IE, to Firefox, to Safari. Changing the browser doesn't seem to help when it's on a device that won't output Japanese characters in a PDF properly.
I'm wondering how PDFs are generated when using online software. Since I can't reproduce the problem on certain devices, it seems to me that the software is using some local settings to render the PDF incorrectly.
Any ideas of how I could go about troubleshooting this problem?

  • What's wrong with the built-in keyboard on my macbook? The caps button does not work rite, no matter what letter button i push they all come out capitals and the number keys when pushed display the special characters instead of the numbers!

the built-in keyboard on my macbook is not functioning right, the number keys when pushed display the special characters instead of the numbers,
the caps button doesn't work at all, the letter buttons display capitals when pushed whether the caps button is on or off, the shift keys are also out of whack!!
It seems it somehow got relocated to the "0" button because if you push and hold the zero button down the keyboard seems to operate normally, the number keys display numbers when pushed the letter keys display lower case when pushed but release the zero button and your back in the twilight zone!! Can anybody help me resolve this issue? one more thing im using an external usb keyboard right now and it seems to function properly if that helps any.

You would do better in the actual macbook pro forums (this is not).

  • Adobe Reader 10: How to print a PDF ignoring the red characters?

Adobe Reader 10: I want to print a PDF ignoring the red characters.
I am a school teacher.  I would like to print PDF answer key files (answers in red) without the answers for the students to work on.  How can I suppress the red characters during print and print only the black characters?

I don't think this is possible with Adobe Reader.  You would need a program like Acrobat or Illustrator to hide these text portions.
If this is a one-time task, you could use the 30 day trial of Acrobat: http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-acrobat-xi-pro-standard-reader-direct-download-links.html - make sure you follow the Very Important Instructions on that page.

  • IDOC Data record is appending with NULL characters instead of spaces.

    Hi Gurus,
    1)     We have created a port with Japanese characters for MATMAS05 (IDOC type) and trying to download an IDOC into an XML file using the ADAPTER, the actual data is less than the length of the IDOC string so we need to append the remaining spaces to each data record which in turn fills the segment pad but whereas in NON-UNICODE server the data record is appending with NULL characters instead of spaces.
    2)     For Japanese port the receiver port name in XML file is appearing with some junk characters in NON-UNICODE client, whereas in UNICODE client it is displaying the correct port name with Japanese characters.
    Your help will be appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance.

  • # is appearing instead of Japanese characters.

    Hi All,
While loading data which comprises of japanese characters, '#' values are appearing in the infocube(infoprovider) instead of japanese characters in the production system. When I load the same data in developmennt system I can see the japanese characters. Is there any setting that we need to make in production system so that we can see japanese characters instead of #.If not then please suggest any other method.
    Thanks,
    Ishdeep.

    Yogesh,
Actually the thing is that we dont have any option of code page setting during secong level loading i.e.in our case we have 2 ODS and 2 masters as base tables. On these tables we had a view and above view we have Infocube (2nd level loads)  and on infocube we are reporting. If you know any code page setting or any other setting for this please let me know.

  • Graphs show random characters instead of image in 11.1.1.6 post upgrade

After upgrading from 11.1.15 to 11.1.16 any new or existing analysis with a graph is showing
a block of random characters instead of the graph. For example, a simple line chart shows:

in the view area when the chart is created.
The other data views (table, pivot) appear fine.
Any ideas on what may have caused this?

First of all you will have to install 10.2.0.1 and try to bring up database with that.
I hope database was shut down cleanly and you have all datafiles/controlfile available.
Once you succeed in that then only you can upgrade the database to 11G.
There is no other way.... you will have to check first with 10G software
Also while upgrading follow the upgrade guide properly...
    Upgrade path will be :
    10.2.0.X.0 TO 11.1.0.6.0
    1. Install 11.1.0.6.0 software
    2. Upgrade the database to 11.1.0.6.0

  • How can I print a pdf in the actual size with a page border?

How can I print a pdf in the actual size with a page border? (2 pages per sheet preferred)
I usually print pdfs of books at a copy shop and they turn out fine.
The problem comes when I try to print the same books at home.
I use Adobe Acrobat X with the same settings: "multiple pages per sheet" (2x1) and page border. But the pages are slightly shrunken when printed. I think this is because my printer can't print as closely to the margins. Still, two pages should be able to fit on one sheet in actual size. Are there any layout settings that I can play with to find a better fit, besides portrait and landscape?
If I select page scaling "none," I'm able to print the pdf in actual size, one page per sheet. But there's no option to add a page border.

I have a test with some questions (multiple choice, FIB, matching, etc). I have just one button to submit all the answers, and after submiting the student can see his score and review the test to know where he failed. He can't answer again. However, he can change the answer multiple times before submiting.
"if i turn on success/failure captions the student will see them while answering" - before submitting
"if i turn them off he wont know what's the right answer" - after submitting
My results page is the default. I didn't use any variable. When i go to the results page after reviewing the test all the entry boxes are "wrong".

  • How to get Acrobat print dialog in Safari

I am asking this question here as well as in the Win forum as I do not know if it is a Win ony issue:
When IE or Firefox is displaying a .pdf the browser print button, file/print and ctrl-p take you to the Acrobat Reader print dialog and the .pdf itself is previewed and printed. In Safari Win they take you to the browser print dialog and a blank page is previwed and printed. Given the futility of telling users to use the Acrobat print button instead of the browser print button or File/Print, is there anything I can do with the .pdf to get this to work under Safari?

    hi all,
thank you for replying. i got rid of the print dialog box by filling in defaults->spool control->output device in the user profile->own data. And i just set the following in my code:
      ltp_control_parameters-no_dialog = 'X'.
      ltp_control_parameters-preview = 'X'.
And also previously i mistakenly reset ltp_control_parameters-preview to 'LOCL' (refer to my previous post).

  • Acrobat Printer doesn't recognize SWF as a printable file form

Acrobat Printer doesn't recognize SWF (even if a static/single frame file), as a printable file format! Please fix the issue,
I am confronted with 'The file cannot be printed. Please try opening the file with the correct application and printing from there' and The issue is encountered while dragging one/many SWF into Acrobat Printer's  printing list.  Its displays that troublesome  error.
And, please add CRTL+P feature to print an SWF from Flash Player Standalone.

No, that doesn't work for me.  And things seem to be inconsistent.  Where it lets you vary the file size (small/medium/large/actual) when large and actual are the same, it doesn't send the actual jpeg file for windows to open.  When large and actual size files are different when you toggle between the two, the file seems to go through to my windows pc ok.  When I tried this through preview, that's when I noticed this difference, not through just email or Aperture yet.  Help!

  • HP Officejet Pro 8000 Printing Blank Pages Instead Of Data And Also Reorienting Itself

    Hi all
We have a wireless HP Officejet Pro 8000 in our office (but via cable, not wireless) to a network.  The printer is occasionally printing blank pages instead of say a spreadsheet selected to print.
The other issue is that if you say are printing two copies of the same spreadsheet, one prints okay (say landscape) and the second copy, selected at the time of printing, prints it portrait but only part of the left hand side of it and the rest is blank.  Coming out of and going back inthe file usually recitifes this.  But it does it again any time it feels like it.
We did have an upgrade, where our IT guy took away our desktop boxes and replaced with smaller base units and everything is run from a main server and alsoan upgrade from Windows 2000 to Network.  Problems started after this and the IT guy did update the printer driver.
Please would anyone be able to assist?  Any help for this frustrating problem gratefully accepted!
    Thanks,
    Saxplayer67

So the issue with the 8000 printer is periodic print jobs do not come out as you are wanting them. Is that right? This is interesting, just from the point of view that generally speaking issues like this are like a light switch, they are either there or they are not - they usually don't come and go. That being said, we are going to see what we  can do to resolve this. First I am going to recommend that we perform a clean installation of the printer after uninstalling it from the machine. By the way, what is the operating system you are working with - Is it Windows 2000 Network?
First if you use a USB cord, make sure to remove it. Do not plug it back in until the software directs you to. Then go through the Devices and Printers, Programs and Features and Device Manager folders and insure that all copies, files, and programs related to the printer are removed. Then as directed, restart the computer.
In the START menu type "%temp%" and press ENTER. Here I want you to press Ctrl+A and hit DELETE. Some of the files will not allow you to delete them, skip those files and delete the majority that allows it.
Then follow this link to download the full feature software and drivers for the printer:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3762364
Install that and let me know the result!
    Have a great day!
