Adding a 3rd drive questions

1.) I have a mac pro with two 3Ghz processors and two 500GB harddrives. Does anyone know if adding a 3rd 500GB hard drive will make the mac run much hotter?
2.) I will use the 3rd drive just for backing up files, so it will not be accessed on a regular basis. In this case, should I still be concerned with finding a drive that is not too noisy? The drive only makes noise and spins when it is being accessed, right?
Thanks!!

On the other hand the Maxtor drives that you do
recommend have had one of the worst quality
reputations in the past. Since they've been
acquired by Seagate the quality of Maxtor drives has
improved.
Actually, what happened was once Seagate took over they had Maxtor stop making the Maxline III 7V300F0. The Seagate 7200.10 does not compare well to it so they removed the competition.
While the 7200.10 provides good sequential performance with large files it is unable to keep up with the Maxline models in small file duplication tests. It is too bad that Seagate did not integrate Maxtor technnology into Seagate products.
In addition, the Seagate 7200.10 320GB still has a write speed limitation of 47MB/sec. when mounted internally as a single drive inside Apple Mac Pro and PowerMac G5 models. I have a complaint posted on this at Seagate and they tell me no fix is available for the 320GB model.
Now when I buy a Maxtor 300GB at Frys it is just a rebranded 7200.10 hard drive with a 3 year warranty instead of a 5 year warranty that would have been provided had it been sold under the Seagate label.
Seagate bought Maxtor and instead of using the technology, dumped Maxtor hard drives. It will be very interesting to see what Seagate tries to pass off to Maxtor customers when they need warranty service in the future.

  • Adding first SATA drive - Questions

I'm going to be adding a SATA drive later today (Newegg and FedEx willing) and was just curious about a couple of things.
What I want to do is remove my old drive and add the SATA, install windows, and then install the old drive and transfer my files.
What (if any) setting do I have change in the bios on my K8N Platinum to get the SATA to work? When I add my old drive, what will be the default boot drive? How do I make it the SATA?
I'm up for any other thoughts you might have too.

    Hi AdamE,
    You don't need to touch
    Quote
all you will need to change is the BOOT sequence (order).. you'll change it from:floppy - cdrom - hard drive 0 to floppy - cdrom - sata hd
There is no sata HD option here only HD.
If You want your OS on Sata as the C:\  drive , disconnect the ide temporarily as DrCool., advised.
    When XP is installed:-
    Switch of
    Re-attach IDE
    Boot Up
    Enter Bios
Advanced options - Hard Disk Boot Order
You should see both your HDrives listed . Move the Sata so that it' on top (1st to Boot)
    Job's Done
Board isn't quircky, it just lists IDE drives then Sata drives. Exactly the same procedure would be needed if for some reason you had HDrives on IDE 1 & Ide2 and wanted the HD on IDE2 to be the C:\ drive
    good luck

  • Boot partition on 2nd or 3rd Drive?

How does one tell the installer to partition the 2nd HDD or 3rd HDD.
It defaults to the root drive \dev\cd0 but I want it on a different HDD.
Is it possible to boot solaris from the 2nd or 3rd drive. Is it possible to have fdisk change drives??

    Hi,
Please select mode as Interactive for installation. In this mode system will prompt many questions which need to be answered. Under disk configuration window you will observe all the drive on left window. You can select appropriate disk and click On button indicating >> to select boot disk which will be shown on right window after selection. There on you need to partition the disk and continue.
However, after installation you need to use DCA floppy to select appropriate disk to boot the system.
I hope this tips help to solve your problems.

  • Adding a JDBC driver in Sun Java System Web Server 7

I'm trying to configure JDBC database connection pooling for a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition though the Sun Java System Web Server 7 administration console. I don't want to use the MSSQL JDBC driver that comes bundled with the SJSWS 7. So I've downloaded the lastest MSSQL JDBC driver from the Microsoft website and put in the "lib" subdirectory of the SJSWS installation directory. So when I go to add a new JDBC resource through the administration console, the newly added MSSQL database driver doesn't appear in the "Driver Vendor" drop-down box.
How do I add the downloaded JDBC driver to the server so that it appears in the "Driver Vendor" drop-down under "Create JDBC resource".

Check this documentation from MS on using the JDBC driver with DataSource
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms379052.aspx
SJS Web Server 7.0 should work with any driver that has support for javax.sql.DataSource. The great majority of drivers do.
So instead of using the driver name, use the DataSource class name:
    com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDataSource
The properties to add should be:
    user=username
    password=password
    servername=sql_server_hostname
    portnumber=sql_server_port
    databasename=databasename
In general, all the setters required to get the datasource configured can be set as properties.

Hi. I have set up the trial versions of Photoshop CC 2014 and Lightroom 5.6 (ie the Photography plan) on a desktop that I have added a new drive to with Windows 7. Everything works fine BUT it is an old computer and I'm thinking that it may pack up unexpectedly. These things happen. I want to sign up for the Photography plan but I also have a Windows Vista laptop, and that is old too so I may want to put the apps on a new desktop and a new laptop, having already installed on my desktop. That makes three activations. Am I allowed to do this? Cheers. Paul

You cannot have three activations. It's simply not technically possible. If and when the time comes, you simply deactivate/ sign out on one of the old systems and install on the new one. If the system goes belly up, you contact support to reset your account. No need to make it more complicated than that and overthink it.

  • Adding new hard drive for Flash recovery area

i am adding new hard drive for flash recovery area. How i can make single directory on that flash recovery area & how i can test that i am accessing that rightly , to that directory & flash back recovery area disk?

Are you on Windows or Unix? And are you using ASM?
I'll assume you are on Windows....So after allocating the drive, you will format it say as F drive. Then you can create a directory T:\Flash. The parameter determining the location of the flash recovery area is db_recovery_file_dest. But you also need to set the size of the flash recovery area as well. After that's done. You can do your backups to Flash and see if the directory is populated.

  • Adding a 3rd Monitor to a Power Mac G5

I am curious as to how - and if - I can add a 3rd monitor to my G5.
Currently I have an ATI 9650 Graphics Card and it runs my 2 23" CD wonderfully. I have been considering adding a 3rd monitor if possible and getting a 30" to have in the middle of the 23's.
Does anyone have knowledge or experience in doing this. It doesn't necessarily have to be a 30 in the middle, another 23 would suffice.
    Thanks in advance!!!

To my knowledge, the ATI 9600 PCI is currently the only PCI based
video card that can be used in the g5
This turns out not to be the case. Any 3.3 volt PCI card will operate in a G5 PCI slot. This should include Radeon 7000, 9000, and 9200 PCI cards. I'm using a PCI Raedon 7000 in my G5 this moment. With my 2-head 9600, I can run 4 displays.
    7000 PCI = VGA + DVI
    9600 AGP = ADC + DVI
I am skeptical that any PCI card has an ADC port. The PCI 2.x spec doesn't provide for powering an ADC monitor, so I suspect an ADC display can be driven from only an Apple-AGP slot or a standard PCI-Express slot.

  • An external hard drive question

I have added an external drive to my Mac. Can you tell me if it is possible to move my music from Itunes to the external drive to free up some space. And if so, will I still be able to play it and would I just drag it over and drop it?
    Thanks
    ruez

To make this work do the following:
    1. Copy your Music folder from your Home folder to the external drive (put it wherever you want.)
    2. Verify that the Music folder copied completely and your files are all present.
    3. Place the original /Home/Music/ folder in the Trash, but do not empty the Trash.
    4. Create an alias for the relocated Music folder (select the folder, then CTRL- or RIGHT-click and choose Make Alias from the contextual menu.)
    5. Copy the alias to your /Home/ folder, then rename it from "Music alias" to "Music" (no quotes.)
    6. Delete the "Music alias" file on your external drive.
Open iTunes to verify that it finds your iTunes library. If all is well Empty the Trash.

  • BIOS indicates hard drive in 3rd Drive position

I replaced the hard drive and the BIOS indicates the hard drive (both the old and the new) is in the 3rd Drive position. The 1st and 2nd Drive position indicate "None".  It indicates the cd drive is in 4th Drive position.  There are no SATA drive sockets for 1st and 2nd Drive position.  Instructions for recovery say the hard drive must be in 1st or 2nd Drive position.
    Any help here?

Here is the motherboard layout for your system.
Notice that there are four SATA connectors labeled SATA1 thru SATA4 [lower right]

  • Adding 2nd hard drive

I have a Power Mac G5 dual 2ghz with 1-160 gb hard drive.
Want to hook up a second drive.
What are the positives and negatives to adding an
external drive or an internal drive?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with Ben. If you just need more storage, internal is the way to go -- faster access, more convenient.
If you're using the new drive as a backup, external is better because whatever fries your computer (necessitating a restore from backup) would most likely damage internal drives far faster than an external backup which you can unplug and disconnect between backups.
So, what are you planning to use it for?
Hope we helped. If we did, please award points!

  • Permissions problem after adding 2nd hard drive and putting user home there

I added a 2nd drive and put my user home on this. The reset password tip from command line at startup never sees this new volume, so I have been having to add my user to most files manually. Almost everything works now except iMovie. When I try to import it says I probably cannot write to the events.localize folder. I have tried symbolic links, manually editing the permissions, etc. no luck. Any ideas?

ill try the fsck right now
    heres the output you requested
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda3 7.3G 3.9G 3.0G 57% /
    none 505M 120K 505M 1% /dev
    none 505M 0 505M 0% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda1 99M 12M 83M 12% /boot
    /dev/sdb1 38G 93M 38G 1% /home
    total 46G 4.0G 42G 9%
    thats interesting.
/dev/sda3 is showing its old values almost like something in the partition tables didn't get updated?
