Adding FQDN in Sharing Prefs?

We have an XServe that has always just had simple name -kbcct1mc01 - in the sharing prefs. We have recently added the FQDN to the DNS server to facilitate forward and reverse lookups - kbcct1mc01.kbc.ourcompany.net. However, we are now getting an error in the System log that says:
"Nov 7 10:26:15 kbcct1mc01 servermgrd: servermgr_dns: gethostbyaddr() and reverse DNS name do not match (kbcct1mc01 != kbcct1mc01.kbc.ourcompany.net), various services may not function properly - use changeip to repair and/or correct DNS"
Does the short name in the Sharing Prefs need to match the FQDN listed in the Windows DNS server? Or is there another place we need to change the name of thr XServe?
Alos, I noticed that if I try adding the FQDN to the sharing prefs it gets changed automatically to hypens where I put in periods.
Thanks in advance.
XServe   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Enter : "kbc.ourcompany.net" in "search domain" field in Network config
and just "kbcct1mc01" in sharing prefs.
And make sure reverse PTR records are setup for the server IP in the Windows DNS.
Test/check with :
host -v <IP>
dig -x <IP>
hostname
changeip -checkhostname (Tiger)
lookupd -d
Enter command name, "help", or "quit" to exit
hostWithName: <hostname>
(or)
hostWithInternetAddress: <IP>
If the network is using a "nonstandard" reverse zone (incorporating for example ...128-25...), Tiger server might be confused and you might have to enter your hostname in /etc/hostconfig (really deprecated since 10.4.6 but might do the job).

  • Can't open Sharing pref pane. Gives weird error.

Suddenly I can't open my Sharing preference pane. It gives the following error:
"You cannot open Sharing preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac."
I haven't run any utilities that remove language packs or architectures. I tried to re-install the 10.5.6 combo update but it says that the updater can't be applied.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Okay, I managed to get the combo updater to install. Don't know why it didn't work before. Then I repaired my permissions.
The Sharing pref pane now opens but it's non-functional (buttons don't respond to mouse clicks) and there are display errors like incorrect or missing text.
I also tried restoring the Sharing pref pane from my Time Machine backup but that didn't make a difference.
So, I think you're right. I need to do a archive and install. What a pain in the *ss that is going to be.

  • Home Sharing doesn't respect Sharing Prefs in iTunes

It might be worthwhile to note - Home Sharing *DOES NOT* respect the sharing prefs in iTunes.  When you enable Home Sharing for several computers in your household, that means all users can access ALL content in your library.
This may not be what you are intending.
For example in my household I have a dedicated mac mini as a media server. From it, I wanted to share movies and music to my Apple TV, as well as personal computers in the house.  I thought Home Sharing is what I wanted.
    Well, yes and no.
I have some content on my personal desktop machine that I may not want the kids having access to - Rated R comedy albums, movies, etc.  I didn't them want to even SEE them (which parental restriction DOES allow, just not playback).  I thought setting the Sharing Preferences in iTunes would set what is available when Home Sharing is enabled. THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
In my instance, you need to enable both iTunes Sharing AND Home Sharing on the media server and turn OFF Home Sharing on all the other computers. This will allow Apple TV to be able to access your media server (it requires Home Sharing). It will also allow other computers access your media server library.  But if you do not want to share everybody's personal libraries, DO NOT enable Home Sharing on the individual computers.
    Rule of Thumb:
If you DO NOT have content you want to restrict from younger members of the household, then Home Sharing is the way to go.
If you DO need to restrict content from individual machines, then use iTunes Sharing instead. (Use BOTH if you are using a centralized media server setup and/or AppleTV)
I hope this helps anyone else running into this sort of scenario.

Tallon321 the lack of names is a "feature" of IOS7.  In the new release they eliminated the name caption for the VIDEOS app in both the "Movies" and the "Home Sharing" views.  They did leave the captions for the new "Home Video" view (you can set the Movie Kind to "Home Video" and downloaded "Home Videos" now have their own view on your device).
    Bottom line, your options are:
    1. Add artwork (with the movie name) to each movie
    2. Change the Movie Kind to "Home Video" and download
Note option #2 doesn't help when using Home Sharing.  Home Sharing now never shows the name caption.  I am not sure why this is considered and improvement.  To me the simplest solution would be to always display name captions for videos without artwork, regardless of which view is being presented.

  • I guess I should not have messed with my file sharing pref...now I'm toast

I use my Airport to connect to my DSL.
I was "messing around" with my SHARING configuration (Apple...System Pref....Sharing...) and did something awful. I no longer have wireless connection to my Verizon router. I can hook up and get online (as I'm doing now) with Ethernet , but not Airport.
The Airport ICON is now GREY and has an ARROW (pointing UP) though it. Never seen that before.
And when I click on the icon I can't find my net work. The other Macs in the house work fine with airport.
Verizon tech support could not help.
How can get my Sharing preference back to normal (I was trying and guessing how to connect my other imacs around my home , without really knowing what I was doing. And I did something in there to screw this up).
    Help please
    JON

Sys Prefs Sharing should not have messed up your ability to connect wirelessly to your router.
Click on the  on your menubar, click on "About This Mac" then click on "More Info..." Find "Airport Card" under "Network" and click on it. Does it say something like "No information found" or is your Airport card being recognized? If Airport is recognized as existing, I would next look in Sys Prefs Network, authenticate on the padlock in the lower lefthand corner, click on AIrport then click on Advanced, then check stuff in there, like on the Airport tab, is your home network listed there anymore? Try deleting it and readding it. Under TCP/IP, are you using DHCP (or whatever you use)? Or might it have gotten changed to a setting that is incompatible with your router's settings?
To get the Sharing Prefs "back to normal," just uncheck all of the checkboxes in Sharing and it will be back in its OEM state.

  • Sharing pref pane stopped working

When I first got my computer, it wasn't even in the system preferences, but I found it in Library>PrefPanes and installed it. I use this to use my wireless to connect my my xbox 360. I haven't had one for about a year now and just got a new one. I went to try to connect it and it didn't work. Then I went to my sys prefs and noticed that the sharing pref pane looked like this:
If there is a fix for this to where I won't have to reinstall osx, it would be awesome to know. Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks!

I also get this when I try to reinstall it:
Is there any way to uninstall it so I can reinstall it?

  • Sharing pref with System Preferences & Applescript

    Hi,
I would like to turn off all sharing services (AFP, SMB) using Applescript but I haven't find any way to script the sharing pref in the System Preferences on Leopard.
    can you help me ?.
    thanks

This query may be more appropriate to the AppleScript forum under MacOS X Technologies. Nevertheless, I'll give you some general pointers to resources that might help you.
Have you read and reviewed the Apple documentation on GUI scripting?
Have you tried using the UI Element Inspector?
There is also a very good shareware product called PreFab UI Browser. It has a 30 day free trial.

  • No file sharing option in Sharing pref panel

    Hi,
MacBookPro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
Sharing pref pane (all accounts, even root) don't offer file sharing option.
I suspect it happened after installing Amazon Cloud Share or TeamViewer. I uninstalled both but no change.
I tried to use MacOS update 10.6.8 to fix my system but had this message :
    Thank you

    HI again,
I could not boot in safe mode (nor with other modifier keys -single user  -verbose mode and -target mode (but I could fix target mode with Startup panel)).
So I booted from my last CCC copy, which did not have the same problem. Update wouldn't install either (same javascript evaluation bug - I'd like to know more about that).
So I restored from time machine because it was more recent that my CCC backup.
All works then with Sharing Pane.
I kept my old status in a disk image if ever I need something I erased.
I made the combo installyou gave me just to be sure.
Thank you for the link to Pondini, I learnt a lot.
    We can mark 'Solved".

  • In IOS8.1, Reminders App, is there a way to set an alert to notify you that something has been added to a shared Reminders List?

In IOS8.1, Reminders App, is there a way to set an alert to notify you that something has been added to a shared Reminders List?

This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)
    http://apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

  • All of the Users are missing in the File Sharing Prefs

I was trying to straighten out an issue I was having with accessing my wife's iMac.  She has access to mine.  So then I gave up and was trying to save a Word doc to an external drive and it wouldn't work.  I checked Prefs and the Users are listed but when I go to File Sharing there aren't any of the Users listed.
    Any ideas?

    Hi cdohbar,
I will provide you the steps to resolve the issue for Mac operating system .
Please follow the below steps :
Close Creative Cloud Application (up right corner, click on the cog menu and then "Quit Creative Cloud").
From Finder, click Go > Go to Folder at top in Menu bar
Type ~/Library/Application support/Adobe and hit return.
Rename  the folders 'AAMUpdater' and 'OOBE' to 'AAMUpdaterOLD' and 'OOBEOLD'.
From the Finder, click Go > Go to Folder.
Type /Library/Application support/Adobe and hit return.
    Rename AAMupdater,  folder to AAMupdaterOLD
    Launch your Creative cloud desktop.
    Introduce your CC credentials.
    Select install/update applications.
Hopefully it will work for you. If it does, then you can remove the folders that you renamed as <something>OLD.
I assume that for Windows users, the steps are different , if you are using Windows OS, please follow the below steps :
Hold Windows + R key from your keyboard.
It will open into a run window.
    In RUN application type:  %localappdata%
    Next, navigate: \Local\Adobe\OOBE
    Rename OOBE as OOBE.old
    Then, Navigate to C:Program files/Common files/Adobe(32 bit) or C:Program files(X86)/Common files/Adobe folder.
Rename AAMupdater folder and try signing to Creative Cloud desktop application.
If you face same issue again, please reply back .

  • Adding Subscribers to Shared Photo streams?

Recently created a photo stream/album that I identified to share with four individuals; however, realized that I needed to add some additional addressees. Unfortunately, I could not figure out exactly HOW to add new "subscribers?"  I went to the Help Center, where their "Manage subscribers to your shared photo streams" information did outline steps; unfortunately, the instructions for adding new subscribers does not appear to be available on/in my system???  I can only see (have the options to change):
    The Album name
    Description
    Deletion of those already selected
Turn on option for Public Website
    ...and no others???
    Can anyone help in this?
    Thanks.

  • Adding a Windows Shared Printer that I cannot see

In 10.4 I was able to add a windows printer that was shared on my network that I couldn't see by hitting alt-More Printers. It would give me an advanced mode. I cannot find how to do this in Leopard. Can someone help me please.

    Hi,
    hade said in this thread-http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1201487&tstart=0
"When you're adding a new printer right-click on the top bar with all the buttons, then choose customize (or what ever it's called in english) and add the advanced button.
With that advanced button you kind of get a window like the old one, where you can choose the windows printer via samba."
I still need to toggle the printer and I can't duplex unless I connect via USB, but.......

  • Changing the Computer Name... when it's greyed out in the Sharing Prefs?

    Okay, here's a weird one.
Using Carbon Copy Cloner 3, I recently cloned the hard drive on my iBook G4 (OS X 10.5.4)—it was dying and I needed to swap in a new one. I made the swap, using the cloned version of my old drive, and everything was wonderful.
The new drive is great. The only artifact of the change is that when I see my iBook on a network, instead of the original computer name (let's call it +David's iBook+ for argument's sake), I get +David's iBook_1+. When I go to the Sharing Preferences pane, in the field where I should get my good old iBook's name, I get that _1 tacked on again, and instead of being able to edit it, the name is greyed out!
The hostname is fine. I can edit that. But the computer name refuses to be changed by any of the normal methods. I could probably go into Terminal and edit the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations/preferences.plist file. But I get the feeling that there's something else going on here.
    Any thoughts?
(I'm now wishing I'd just restored using Time Machine. Old habits die hard.)

Thanks! I should have mentioned that I'd already tried that. Several times. There are no other computers with the same name as mine on either my home or office network.
I can click on the "Edit" button and change the name to "David.local" or whatever, and it'll stay that way—but it doesn't show up on the LAN. When I look for the computer over the network—either using Bonjour or the Apple-K command in the Finder—it shows up with its old name. If I try to connect with "David.local" (or whatever), I get an error saying the server can't be found.
Since posting, I've also tried logging in as the root user and changing it there. No dice.
I had to replace the hard drive (the reformatting that caused me to clone the disk in the first place turned out not to solve the problem, which was that the hard drive was failing); for a week I was using an external drive clone as the startup disk for my iMac. It let me change the name there just as it should have. No more +David's iBook_1+. Woohoo!
But when I copied the disk back onto my brand new internal drive... There it was again. Greyed out. Can't get at it.
    Grrrrrr.
Again, it's not a big deal; I want to change the name so that it fits the naming convention at my office. But it's really bugging me! (Obviously.)
I suppose I could reinstall and migrate the accounts and apps over....

  • Should these System Preferences match or is it better that the System sets 'Sharing Prefs' (set-up-name's-macbook-pro.local) and Networking/Advanced/WINS name MACBOOKPRO-****) *=numeric digit or letter

I'm now on another fresh OS reinstall which reverted back to the OEM Mountain Lion 10.8.4 after an upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 When I first thought that the failed OS X upgrade could have been the caused by some conflicting networking settings that I discovered in System Preferences. I tried to match the computer name which I gave at setup which the File Sharing section users i.e. name's-macbook-pro.local with the WORKGROUP name which is generated in the System Preferences/Network Preferences/Advanced WINS section uses MACBOOKPRO-****.
However I am not using a Windows PC at the moment and don't expect to be sharing with anyone else using one so I'm a touch uneasy seeing these SMB WORKGROUP settings being established by the System and realising that these settings are not allowing the Administrator user (me) override as. The symptoms which make me uneasy are random visibility of a sharing server named as the first half of my Wi-Fi routers SSID ie: BTHub5 not the random letters and numbers that follow BTHub5-****.
Problems setting up Lexmark and Epson printers. Suggested update from AppStore for Remote Desktop Client, I never purchased Remote Desktop but can see that there is a folder Remote Desktop Management in System/Core Services.
Unexpected permission changes appearing all over the System, example being that the user group 'Wheel' changing to 'Staff' I don't employ people and don't want or need filesharing with other computers.
Lots of System crash reports that mostly are listed as 'Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)'
Is any of this normal or am I being stalked by a very persistent user? Thanks in advance for any tips you guys can give me.
