Adding new printer in chooser old OS

I just hooked up a new HP Deskjet 5940 to my old PowerMac G4 ronning on OS 10.2.8. I can print fine with my OS 10 applications, but when I go to my old OS 9 Excell or OS 9 Powerpoint, not only can't it see the new printer, I can't even add it in Chooser, where it simply doesn't show up. Help please?

You're quite welcome.

  • Ease of adding new printer- what am I missing?

I haven't had to add any peripherals to my iMac for several years, but am now trying to help my parents (in another state) install a new printer on their eMac. I've always heard how easy it is to add and install peripherals on a Mac compared to a PC, but they're having a heck of a time and I'm having trouble talking them through it over the phone.
They're trying to install a Canon Pixma MP-830. They installed the software from disk and tried to print- nothing. I explained how to "Add A Printer" from the Print Utility, but they're it's still not showing up for some reason. Part of the problem is the "old dog/new tricks" thing- they're in their late 60's and are slowly adapting to the world of computing; another problem is that I'm trying to help them remotely.
My brother, a PC-guy, insists that if they were installing it on a PC it would be plug and play right out of the box. My parents and I are all getting quite frustrated with the difficulties they're encountering, considering it should be a fairly basic exercise.
Is there something we're missing about the supposed ease of adding a printer? It certainly hasn't been easy thus far.
    Thanks.
    iMac G3 600 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hello Dave,
There are a couple of things you can get them to check. The first is that the printer is showing as being connected to the Mac. Get them to open System Profiler and select Hardware > USB. All going well they should see the printer details on the USB bus. If it is present then we can move on but if it isn't then get them to disconnect the power to the 830 (not the USB) and then reconnect the power. The printer should now appear unless it or the usb cable is faulty.
    If it does appear then we can check the driver. After running the driver installer they have to restart. If they don't then that can stop the software detecting the printer. If the driver did install correctly then when they go to add the printer they should see it in the Default Browser view of the Printer Setup Utility. When they select it the Print Using menu should show Canon IJ Printer. If it doesn't then there has been a problem with the software installation. So I would get them to do the following;
    1. Open Printer Setup Utility, click on Printer Setup Utility and select Reset Printing System.
    2. Close the Printer Setup Utility.
    3. Go to Library > Printers > Canon and delete the contents of the BJPrinters folder.
    4. Go to Library > Receipts and delete the file Canon iPxxxx xxx.pkg
    5. Empty the Trash
    6. Restart the Mac
    7. Install the latest version of the Canon driver. Check the Canon web site to ensure you have the latest version. Do the restart when prompted. This is important.
    8. After the restart, go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk Permissions option.
    9. Open Printer Setup Utility and click Add.
    10. Select the Default Browser view and select the Canon printer connected via the USB port. The Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon IJ Printer.
    11. Click Add to add the printer.
Hopefully this is not too much for them but unfortunately when things don't work then these extra steps are needed. As for your brothers comment - I can guarantee you that Windows is no better. The same problem does occur.

  • Adding new printer with ARD 2.2

I just installed a new printer in a lab of 27 eMacs (an hp 1200). I set up the printer on one of the eMacs and now would like to use ARD 2.2 to install the printer on the other computers. Where is the information about installed printers stored in 10.4? I copied the /users/username/library/printer folder from the eMac with the new printer setup to one of the other eMacs but it didn't copy the new printer into that folder. Is there a better way to do this? I thought that there would be a folder or file that stores this info. that I could easily copy to the other eMacs. Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
Printer information is stored in /etc/cups. Here you will have several files containing printer information, such as cupsd.conf and printers.conf. There is also the ppd folder that contains the ppds for the printer/s that have been added.
I haven't tried this but I think if you copy the two files and folder mentioned above and the file/s from the ~/library/Printers folder, then this may be sufficient.
Of course the printer would have to be a network printer. If it is physically connected to the eMac then this won't be suitable. Sorry if this is obvious but you didn't mention how the printer was configured so I couldn't assume you were aware of this.

Maybe you should set it up as new device again:

  • New Print Challenges: Same Old Thing . . . Plus Some New One!

In general, I liked my Photosmart 7520 a lot. Yes, it was annoying that it didn't print now and then. I've discovered on my own that it was the print Que that indicated it was offline. And that was when it was wired in. But I never changed anything. So checked for removed cords and so forth were worthless. Besices, after a while it worked again, for several days, only to come up, often right after a successfully printed job!? Maybe it is the operating system, which I think is 64-bit version of Windows 7, which was upgraded from the original Vista.
Changing it to wireless setup amounted to about the same ratio of stalled printing. Several attempts to contact HP got nowhere. I could only enter messages within their form. But I could never see how to sent it to them! I tried sending a prompt to the VP, which worked once before. Of course, I cannot know if that was sent successfully. Possibly, it is due to using Google Chrome as my browser. I've seen that effect for other sites. Anyway, after a LOT of other frustrating issues, it came down to the print head was burned out. So I got it replaced with a whole new, Officejet 6830 printer. Most of the features are the same except less capable for photos. which I didn't need or use anyway) and no SD card slot. That function also was used rarely, if ever. Besides, I can easily download to desktop PC, then print on plain paper, which is fine for my purposes. Now that I have the new one up and running (most of the time anyway), that model also stalls.
Backing up, I was unable to insert the [edited] for their services. Several attempt to contact HP about that and the rest have proven futile. No wonder, they've designed troubleshooting so I cannot let them know! I've also noted that some places suggest I still have some 7520 drivers installed. Not sure how to make a clean start. Installing their Corctor software hasn't shown much in how to solve more than I've already tried. Yes, sometimes turning off the printer will have it print when turned back on. But not always. Maybe I'll get some opportunities when my first ink cartridges arrive.
Was also wondering about the HP Photo Creations. I thought that was only for the 7520. However, an offer to re-install came and I tried it. Can't see anything of it though, probably because I didn't accept their terms. With all the legalise in it, I can't even figure out if it is free or if I can use for the Community newsletter I do for our H.O.A. or runner's club. Not only that, I'm not likely to want to print any of it anyway. Instead, I'd want to use the graphics for the online version to send to others. Again, am I allowed to even do that for free?
I hope THIS gets transmitted to . . . SOMEONE!

After designing your newsletter, you can click the Share button to upload it to a private web page, and share the link on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, email, and other social media. People with the link can then view the newsletter online or download and print it themselves with HP Photo Creations. You can do all of that (plus print) for free. • Problem adding new info to an old PDF File

I have an old book I wrote and saved in PDF years ago, like 15 years ago.
I tried to add some new info to the book so I can have it on my news blog
I have been able to get the old pdf to display, but when I try to add the book into my Word 2010 to put on my blog the final new file, it won't load the old file.
Any ideas on why new Word won't import an old pdf to merge into a new file?

It does it for other old books I've done,  just not for this huge book, it may be it's too big over 100mb in file size since it's all scanned images of gov docs about UFOS.
So it may be a size limit to merge a new word doc with an old pdf file.

  • New printer for old computer

My HP laserjet printer model 4L broke yesterday. Need a new printer for an old computer. It's an HP Brio using windows 2000 (built on NT technology) - whatever that means. A plastic part broke on the printer cover that affected it's printing capability. Thanks for any input.

    Hi Gwen,
There is a way you can tell whether a new printer will be supported on your Windows 2000.
As an example, I have included the information for the HP Deskjet 3520 (not the ePrint version of the printer).
This is an inexpensive printer that one can still buy, and the printer supports the Full Feature Software (full driver set) for Windows 2000.
HP Deskjet 3520 Inkjet Printer Drivers - Windows 2000
    What You Can Do:
Find a printer that you want to buy
Open the Support and Drivers Page:  HP Drivers & Downloads
Enter the name of the printer in the box under "Find by Product"
Look for your Operating System in the drop down menu under "Select your operating system"
    Click "Next" and Scroll down
Look under "Driver - Product Installation Software"
You are looking for the "Full Feature Software" installation package.
The Full Feature Software package provides the full printing capabilities.
If you do Not find the Full Feature Software, then the printer you have selected will NOT be fully supported by your Operating System.  "Basic Driver" is not enough -- you need the Full Feature Software or your printer might not be able to do everything -- for example, it may not be able to "scan".
Go through this exercise until you find a Printer model that is supported for your Operating System AND provides the Full Feature Software.
You might also look under the Manuals section to pick up any details about the printer's operation - whether the printer supports wireless, and under what circumstances it works (or does not).
    Good Luck!

It is a great “Thank You” for the Author's efforts.

  • Hi, why can't I use my old e-print address with my new printer?cc=NL

I have a newer photosmart 5510 model and had to install it again. But when I tried to connect to the eprint centre it only worked when I removed my old printer. But than I couldn't use the emailaddress because I got the message it already existed... How do I change this? I used the same login.

    Hi,
My suggestion: change the old one to a different one then try again. Or you can do using this order:
    1. Add a new printer (now you have 2),
    2. Remove the old printer, (now only new one)
    3. And then Change the new printer to the old email address.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 for two years. I got a new printer and installed it although I did not remove my old printer from my computer. I used this program and my new printer for quite a few months, but today I deleted my old printer

I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 for along time now. When I first used the program I had a different printer than I have now. Although I changed printers I never removed the software from my old one. Now this was never a problem until today. When I choose a printer I still had option to use the old one but always chose my new HP Envy 5530 and Adobe never had a problem printing from that new printer. However today I decided to remove my old printer from my computer and now my Adobe cannot find my new printer.  How can I make it find the HP printer?

    Try this --
Go to the bottom of the link I gave you, and you will see
click that link and then click the chat button to talk to an Adobe agent

  • Can i use an old eprint email account with a new printer?

can i use an old eprint email account with a new printer?

    Hello arbazu,
Unfortunately, when setting up a new/replacement printer, you wont be able to use the same email address, nor can it be transferred to another printer. Once an email is used, the email address itself is not able to be used for a certain period of time (which I believe is 6 months).
However, by creating a new email address, but adding an 01 or 02 at the end, you can get something very similar to what you had previously.

  • How do I get Firefox to recognize my new default printer as the old default printer is no longer connected?

I have installed a new default printer in my computer which is running Windows XP Pro. When I try to print from the browser it keeps showing the old printer which is no longer connected to the computer. Every other program has recognized the new default printer. The Control Panel indicates that the new printer is the default.

You can force Firefox into forgetting the old printer.
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # Locate the preference '''print.print_printer''', right-click on it and choose '''Reset'''
    # Restart Firefox

  • I can not delete my history and adding new bookmarks. Upgrading to later Firefox versions and/or re-installing didn't help. The address bar still shows the web addresses of old and whenever I make new bookmarks, it's always gone as if it was never made.

I can not delete my history and adding new bookmarks.
Upgrading to later Firefox versions and/or re-installing didn't rectify it either.
The address bar still shows the web addresses of old and whenever I make new bookmarks, it's always gone as if it was never made.
Also, I have noticed that every once in awhile you can not close tabs you've opened, either by pushing on the X button and/or clicking on the mouse to close it. Although closing the window and opening it again (without closing the Firefox application) seemed to rectify the problem in the short term, it's becoming quite annoying.

    I think I have a solution.
First, download the add-on SQManager. This should be included with FireFox, it is really good.
Look for the file '''moz_hosts''' in the folder '''places.sqlite'''.
Don't delete the file, just delete the information in the file. My file has over 3600 websites, which go back years!! I did not know they were there, but I was frustrated about not being able to get rid of them. They popped up every time I used the address bar. Clearing my history would not get rid of them.
This is where they are stored!! I found that by deleting the pesky web site from '''moz_hosts''', it does not appear in my address bar anymore!!!
I think that if I just delete all the websites in moz_hosts....
    Wa-la...History Gone!!!
As long as you don't delete the file, just empty it, FireFox won't know the difference. It will just keep adding websites to it until you empty it again.
Why running "clear recent history" doesn't do this, I don't know. You are doing manually what "clear recent history" is not doing.
Please tell me if you see any flaw in this.
