Adjusting audio of multiple clips in the timeline simultaneously

Is there a way to adjust the audio volume of multiple clips in the timeline simultaneously?

Or you can send the whole things over to Audition and work in multitrack there.
I like to get everything edited in Prmiere and then send the audio (I never bother with a refernce video) to Audition for finish work.  There you can apply effects to individual clips, individual tracks or the entire mix.  I always put a hard limiter on the Master track at -3dB to prevent clipping.  Since this is the last filter in the chain I can boost other clips first and still know that my audio will never be too loud

  • CS3: Re-connect audio to a clip on the timeline

I have a common question from my strung-out journalism students:
"I have all these clips on the timeline that I've spent ages cutting and ordering. At the time of my first Source Monitor edit, I didn't plan to use their sound so I didn't bring it down with the vision from the source monitor. Now I realise I want to use the original camera sound".
So: once you have vision on the timeline, and the camera sound either wasn't brought from source, or was subsequently unlinked and deleted, is it possible to "re-attach" the camera sound that goes with the vision without having to find the sequence and re-do the edit?
    cheers
    Matthew P

Harm's method won't work if you've trimmed the clip in the sequence or if you've used multiple instances of the clip in the sequence.  There's apparently a bug in CS3 that prevents this from being as easy as it should, but it works better and as expected in CS4.  Here's what you do:
Double-click the sequence clip to load it into the Source Monitor.
Press the Q-key to go to the video in point.  Note the timecode.
Press the W-key to go to the video out point.  Note the timecode.
Select the clip in the sequence and park the CTI on top of it.
Press the M-key to do a match frame operation.
Set the Source Monitor to display either audio-only or audio+video.
Enter the TC of the in point.  Press the I-key to set the audio in point.
Enter the TC of the out point.  Press the O-key to set the audio out point.
Drag the audio from the SM image to the sequence.  Line it up with the video portion of the clip that's already there.
In CS4, you can Q, I, W, O during the match frame operation without having to manually note the timecodes from the clip instance.  You should be able to do the same in CS3, but I can't here.

  • Re-importing synched audio to video clips in the timeline

Hello, i have edited together a project with a whole bunch of clips and i unlinked the audio and deleted it to replace it with music but now my client wants the original audio back.
Is there any way of automatically reconnecting the audio to the selected video files in the time line?

    Welcome to the forum robz85!
    Fastest way to do this:
    1. put the playhead over any video clip you need to add the audio to in the timeline. Doesn't matter where within the clip you set the playhead... just don't move it after step 2 nor move it in the Viewer after step 2)
    2. With the Canvas active, type f.
    3. connect the audio to the tracks you want to add it to in the timeline window on the left (connect the track buttons) then type F11 to perform a replace edit.
    4. If you have filters on those clips, copy the video only clip in the timeline first (cmd+c)... then after you perform the edit, right click on the new clip that includes the audio, and select "paste attributes" from the contextual menu that will show up... add the filter(s) back... or motion attributes if you've changed those).

  • Keyframed lens flare across multiple clips in the timeline?

How can  I apply a keyframed lens flare that continues across multiple clips in my timeline?
Using keyframes I am trying to have a lens flare travel across several clips in my timeline as one contiunes movement.
Back in the day (before elements) i could do this in Premiere using something called virtual clips (I think).
Thanking you in adavance for any help on this or "virtual clips"

    Welcome to the forum.
Premiere Pro allows for Transparent Video (think the opposite of Black Video, in both PrPro and PrE), but PrE does not have that feature. You are probably thinking of Sub-Clips, also not available directly in PrE.
Steve's method will work, but here is another to consider:
Place the WAB (Work Area Bar) over those particular contiguous Clips, and then Publish+Share (for PrE 11, or Share for PrE 7 - 10), and export those contiguous Clips to an AV file. The choice of Publish+Share settings will depend on what you have for your Source Footage, and what your Project's Preset is. If you are working with, say AVCHD, then doing the Publish+Share to matching H.264 will probably be what you want.* In the Publish+Share dialog, make sure to check Work Area, to limit that to JUST the area defined by the WAB. Import that output file into your Project, and replace those edited Clips with it. Apply your Keyframed Lens Flare to that Clip. That is basically a manual Sub-Clip, but with a few more steps, than in PrPro.
    Good luck,

  • How do I select multiple clips in the timeline!?

Ok, not quite as simple as the subject! This is what I want to do:
Just finished a multi camera edit and I now need to color correct and grade the footage. So, now that I've corrected the color on camera angle number 1 I want to apply that effect to all the clips in the timeline that come from that camera angle. How do I apply that effect to all those clips without having to do some manually. In FCP its possible to search for all timeline clips that come from a specific file. When those are highlighted it's possible to paste an effect onto all those clips.
So, how do I do that in Premiere Pro CS5?
    Thanks!
    Bradley

Had to create proxies of my Canon 7d footage to achieve smooth playback but it's worked out fairly well so far!
I'm surprised that the DSLR Preset for the Canon footage still required proxy files. I thought that would handle the 5D/7D MOV files just fine. Maybe I was mis-informed.
The good news is that it's working for you, so things are good.
    Good luck,

  • FCP7; "unmerge" merged audio and video clips in the timeline?

Our TC was way off in some areas due to a bad timecode lemo on set. My editor synched by slate then merged the video with an audio mixdown track using the in points. Now when I export an EDL the original TC from the audio clip is gone, so he has no reference for matching up the audio. Does anybody know of a way to un-merge these clips and restore the original filename (audio takes the name of merged video but reveals correctly in finder) and timecode? Thanks.

what happens if you match frame the audio?  I would think it would match back to the source audio clip which you could then use to replace the audio in the timeline.

  • Normalise audio for all clips in the timeline ?

Is it possible ? At the moment, I am doing it clip by clip. I want to do it for all and then probably modify separate clips of high noise down or dialogues a bit up.
Selecting all the clips and then going to audio properties disables the Normalise Audio option.

    Thanks,
I selected the first image and everything to the left them deleted (event though I could not see anything in the timeline). I then had to replace the first image and could move the timeline to where it needed to be.
Could not see anything in the way but there must have been something somewhere.
    Thanks

  • Any way to change the duration of multiple clips in the timeline at once?

    Title says it all
    Thanks

Can you manually drag back and forth with the handles on the timeline? Appreciate it.

  • Adjust audio on multiple clips at same time (not in same timeline)

I have 341 individual audio clips in a bin (individual sequences) and I need to raise the dB on all of them (probably +3 or +5). I have 3 languages to do this in for a total of almost 1000 individual sequences. I'd prefer not to have to set each one manually. It's easy enough to open all timelines by selecting all, but then I have to manually adjust each sequence by selecting it then using keystrokes to up +3 or +1, then close the sequence.
I can't use Sound Convert because I need to retain the .ima4 encoding on the audio files. Sound Convert can do a batch audio gain change - but I can't find a way to do it in Final Cut Pro. Any suggestions? Have tried Automater too - but that's tedious.
    Thank you all!

How were these clips of yours created that they were too low to be audible? How were your sequences created without using the VU meter or with no regard for the presentation requirements? The question you need to answer is quite simple:
Do you recapture them all properly and replace the media or do you slog through the effort required to correct the mistakes you and your team made?
The effort required to build a hack often surpasses the effort to start from scratch. But I hope you get a decent suggestion for a script.

Wow. Thanks for this helpful post. Must be great to never work on a project where requirements change or Apple changes specs in the 3.0 SDK that weren't there in the 2.2.1 SDK. Lucky you work on all those straight-forward and easy projects. Gosh...must be nice.

  • Toggling between video clips (not audio clips) in the timeline

    Hi,
I was wondering if there is a solution to this small inconvenience I am experiencing in FCP 5. When I have snapping enabled, and press the down arrow key, the playhead jumps to the next audio or video clip in the timeline. I am trying to find out if there is a way to jump between video clips only.
    Thank you

    Thanks,
Do you know if there is a way to make the up/down arrows snap to only the video cuts on the video clips in the highest video tracks in the timeline? Thanks.

  • How do I see every frame of a clip on the timeline in Premier ?

There are of course times when I need to see every frame of a clip to synchronize two clips. Imagine for example that you have a two camera shoot and both cameras were looking at a clapstick, or at a strobe. I want to put both clips on the timeline and zoom in to see every frame. Now I can align the two clips fo that one specific frame of each clip is over/under each other. However, when I have zoomed into the timeline it seems I can never zoom quite enough to see every frame What do I do to be able to zoome all the way in to the timeline so I can see every frame of the clips ? I haven't actually tried this yet with CC, but did with CS6 and it wouldn't do it.

I'm not knocking the idea of using the program monitor to place markers on sync points and using that to synchronize clips. It should be a very good solution.
What I am saying is that there are times when it would be advantageous to be able to see every frame of multiple clips on the timeline. When i first tried to do that I zoomed in and it looked as if it would display all the frames. I was dissappointed to find it wouldn't. As an editor who has done a lot of resynchronizing multiple camera shoots where there is no intentional visual sync cue, i can tell you it can be a big help to be able to see the frames as if we had a strip of film on each timeline. Sometimes we need to see several frames of each clip at the same time to make a decision about which frame represents the sync point, or to make the quickest possible decision about where to start and end a dissolve, or to chose which camera to use. In a scene shot with only one camera, there is no actual sync point. The action may have progressed slightly differently between shots. Being able to see 10 or 15 frames from each shot can help to make the quickest decision about how to line up the shots and where to do the transition. Would anyone out there say it would be a bad thing if Premier Pro could display every frame when we zoom all the way in ? It seems to me that it could only help. So i request Adobe consider it as a possible future improvement.
Here is an example, the last time i tried to see every frame in Premier. I had a scene I used Maya to create, series of Tiffs. This scene shows an object appearing as if arriving through a time or dimensional portal. The scene includes plasma popping and flashing. There are two different shots of the same moment in time. The shots are frame numbered. So if I could see the frame numbers from the original tiffs on the timeline I could align the shots that way. But of course I lose the frame numbers. The overall scene is too long, and rendering time too long, especially for 3-D 1080, to render each shot from the beginning of the scene, which would make synchronizing very easy. So i needed to sync to the flashing plasma in the scene. I though I had the shots lined up using a flash. It turned out they were not the same flash. So if i did a slow dissolve between shots, the flashes form each shot would not line up in time. What I needed to do is line up several flashes happening over a couple of seconds, so I coud verify the flashes were the same flashes. There are different numbers of frames between each flash, so if I got three to line up they would have to be the same flashes. I spent a lot of time trying to get these shots lined up. If I could zoom into the time line and see evry frame I could synchronize several clips by lining up the flashes, in just a couple of minutes. To do this with markers, marking say five flashes from each of four shots, it would take several minutes to do it before being ready to do the synchronizing. It's a workable solution, but is not ideal, a compromise.

  • Adjusting volume on multiple clips

How can I adjust volume on multiple clips at the same time in FCP?

Highlight all the clips you want to adjust, then press Apple "+" or Apple "-" to raise and lower the levels in increments of 1, and Apple "[" and Apple "]" to raise and lower the levels in increments of 3.
One of my favorite keyboard commands.

  • How do I select multiple clips in a timeline in the reverse direction, e.g. middle to front?

I know how to click "a" and select clips in the timeline looking forward, but how do we select multiple clips from a middle point to the front of the timeline?  I don't want to be lassoing -- is there some other way?

    Hi denniscallan,
Please check the track selection tool. Refer to the link below for more information about the tools section.

  • How can I lock video clips to the timeline?

    Hello Apple discussion.
I know that holding down the command key disable ripping when triming.
But that doesn't work when deleting clips. It would be useful to lock videoclips to the timeline, so they keep their position.
Lock audio to playhead doesn't help the situation.
    Thank you for your time
    Attila

You cannot lock a video clip to the timeline. The program is designed so that when you delete a video clip, the other clips slide over to fill the gap. Otherwise you would have holes all over your project, or have to manually move them over. You would want to lock the audio clips to the non-deleted video clips, so that the audio slides over with them.
If you want to preserve the gap left by a deleted video clip, first insert in front of it a black clip of the same exact duration, and then delete the video clip. The black clip would hold all of the other clips in position, but leave you with a black hole to fill or delete. To make a black clip, separate two video clips on the timeline, and control-click on the empty space. In the resulting drop down menu, select Convert Empty Space to Clip. Then control-click on the black clip and in the resulting window adjust the time duration by overwriting the values in the time box and then clicking the Set button.

  • Updated to 7.2.2 and the clips in the timeline are a much darker tone.

I recently updated to 7.2.2 of premiere and the clips in the timeline are now a much darker tone. Did this come in the update and if so can I turn it off or make the colors brighter?

    Kevin,
Sorry to say, I'm with those who feel the color-picker colors should be the same as we pick 'em to be ... wherever they're applied. We have always had the ability to choose more muted colors if we wanted, but now by design we cannot choose the actual color/hue value ... and at that much "darkness" increase, several of the colors don't have an obvious "match" anymore with colors in the bins.
I cannot see any increase in productivity/ease-of-use from this change that we users didn't have easily and obviously available before. It has directly limited our choices now. I'm not as audio-tied as many users who do multiple audio tracks for music videos and such would be ... so the main effect this has on me is making my timeline less easily obvious. Struggling user that I am, I prefer painfullly obvious if at all possible!
I understand you've got five tons of irons in the fire both fixing some other more major-seeming issues and also trying to create new tools as we users keep asking for things. Still ... this would be something I would also appreciate rolling back in a sooner than later update.
    Neil
