After Effects skipping frames in animated GIFs

Hello,
I have a 20 PNG sequences (each with 8 images) that I would like to combine into a single Animated GIF.  That's 160 frames, which adds up to 00:00:05:10 on my timeline.  After Effects shows the proper number of frames when they are arranged in sequence.
When I attempt to render the GIF, however, After Effects drops 12 frames in the final output, giving me a total of only 148.  This was confirmed when I re-imported the animated GIF back into After Effects; its duration was only 00:00:04:28.  The frames appear to be getting pulled from all over the GIF, with no apparent pattern.
I need all 160 frames because I am eventually going to convert them to a sprite sheet for a game (I have a program that will convert GIFs into sprite sheets).  I've attached a copy of the sprite sheet that I just exported from the GIF; notice that 12 frames are missing.
Does anyone know why AE would remove frames like this?

The After Effects forum would be a good place to ask. This is just a general animation forum that is read by only 13 people.

  • New After Effects CC 2015 Character Animator Feature

    Hi, the new After Effects CC 2015 character animator feature looks amazing. Is this compatible with Photoshop CS6 or would you have to use the Photoshop CC version?

    > How do you download a free trial version of AE CC
    "Free Trial" button in the upper right corner of this page: http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects.html
    > would you be able to record the animated facial features and then tie this in with the pre-recorded sound afterwards?
    Yes, you can mix and match separate performance tracks ("takes") per puppet.
    > when you take the finished animation into AE can you further manipulate in the AE timeline - facial features, body etc?
    Once you're back in AE, it will be pixels, so you'd do further edits in Character Animator before bringing into AE. Though you could, say, just do the head or lips in Character Animator and then attach them to a body done in AE.
    > I guess I am wondering if this software would be good enough for professional character animation.
    If it's not, please us know why so we can fix it! Note that this first version is a "preview" so don't expect the usual polish & completeness of a shipping app. It will install (as a companion app) automatically as part of the next AE CC update.

  • After effects cs5 - frame rate mismatch wmv, flv, h264

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to render my compositions at 20 fps as wmv. Its important that they stay 20fps and that they are an exact length of time.
    Since upgrading to cs5 I've been unable to do so as After Effects can no longer render wmv files at 20fps. By default it renders wmv at 25 fps so my animations are now 20% too quick.
    According to adobe this is an issue with cs5 and wmv, flv and h264. It mentions a workaround online which involves creating a new output module
    please see link.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/852/cpsid_85260.html
    When I follow this advice and create a new output module the problem is worse, they now render at 30fps so are now 50% too quick.
    For rendering wmv I am getting round this by rendering as Quicktime though I have yet to find a codec that offers file size and quality benefits of wmv.
    But my animations also have to be rendered as h264 for viewing on a mobile device. After Effects can no longer render h264 at 20fps and I cant find a way round it.
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Also if h264, wmv and flv are unconstrained formats why would Adobe constrain them to certain frame rates in CS5. Seems like a basic feature thats been around for years has been disabled.
    I tried tech support but they just sent me a link explaining what a frame rate is.
    thanks
    s

    Thanks for reply Mylenium, much appreciated. I dont think I do mis understand completely however.
    I understand some formats are constrained such as mpeg. And some wmv formats maybe constrained in some ways, but to quote Adobe online help
    "In After Effects CS5, there is a known issue that causes WMV and FLV output frame rates to be constrained unnecessarily."
    I have also found the same issue with H264 format.
    the online help goes on to say
    "By creating an output module template and applying this template to a render item, you bypass this bug."
    Unfortunately in my experience creating an output module template does not bypass the bug, but it makes it worse.
    The same projects worked fine and rendered correctly in CS3 as flv, h264 and wmv. The render issues occur in CS5. Like you say Adobe has the 64-bit environment to contend with.
    When you say manually over ride the frame rates in the encoder panel I guess you  are referring to Adobe Media Encoder which is an option and maybe would give better quality results too.
    thanks

  • HD Graphics from After Effects Repeat Frames in FCP6 - Why & How Fix?

    The details first:
    Easy Set-up set to Kona 3 1080psf 23.98 10 bit Uncompr.
    The AE HD Graphic is 23.98 1920x1080 Animation Codec
    What Happens:
    In the Finder Window the QT from AE plays perfectly
    In Quicktime Pro this QT from AE plays perfectly
    Once imported into FCP6, (both in the Viewer and after rendering in a sequence with the above settings) will repeat frames in this fashion - 3:2:3:2:2:3:2:2:3:2 in which the 2nd frame is repeated as the 3rd, etc etc.
    This results in a "stuttering" playback which has been brought up several times on this forum but not answered yet. I have had other editors using FCP6 report this problem with no fix except to use an Image Sequence out of AE (a work-around but not a satisfactory one)
    Also, I have brought in previous HD Graphics QTs from AE (BTW these are all full-frame animations w/ no alpha channel) that worked perfectly in FCP5 and they now show the same problem in FCP6.
    Has anyone found a way to fix this? Is there some sort of bizarre pull-down action going on? Is there a way to customize an import into FCP6 of an AE QT? (All I got is File<Import<Clip) Or perhaps is there an export setting in AE that needs to be tweaked? My Graphics Department and I are going nuts here - any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Much love

    To all who were interested and those who feared to reply because of ignorance - HERE IS THE FIX!!
    Export out of After Effects at 23.976... NOT 23.98 and it will be as smooth as a baby's bottom (and you know how much your clients love baby bottoms!)

  • After Effects is shortening my animation

    I bring in a 6.6 sec animation (.mov) file into after effects and it becomes 5.11 sec long. I've checked the frame rate of the clip and the comp they are both at 24 fps. Its messing up my comp because it is an animation synced to audio and the audio remains 6.6 sec long. Does anyone have any thoughts?

    Without knowing the exact specs of your clip, where it was created, system info, exact comp settings and so on nobody can know. We don't even know your AE version.

  • Using After Effects to Enhance 3D Animation Output

    Check out the following Before/After clip that shows a 3D animated movie produced with Antics V3 and how Antics user, Tony Bannan, who is a compositor by trade, used After Effects to add a few lighting effects, motion blur, color grading and depth of field effects.
    http://www.previz.com.au/videorestricted/comparefolie.html
    Tony won the Antics Medical Shorts Competition with this clip Folie a Duex and you'll see what can be achieved right out of the box with Antics, but you can also see how your After Effects skills can really allow you to produce stunning 3D animated movies.
    http://www.antics3d.com

    You render images or movies from AE and import them into Flash itself, plain and simple. AE does not generate FLA files and in this case even the XFL format would not serve, either, as it does only transport transform animation. What kind of movie or image format you use is pretty much your choice, but naturally PNGs with Alpha or Flash Video with Alpha seem the most logical. Though, with PixelBender, you'd probably not care to even do that and code a respective simple box filter in flash...

  • Single frame of animated gif

    Is there a way to isolate a single frame of an animated gif, to send in an email?
    Can I use "Preview" to do this?

    Drag the GIF onto the QuickTime Player icon in the
    Dock; you can then go through the GIF until you find
    the frame you want, and take a screenshot of that
    frame with the Shift, Command, and 4 keyboard
    shortcut.
    (19745)
    Well, yes, I can make a screenshot, just from a frame from Preview, too. I was hoping that there would be a way to copy a frame directly from the gif.
    I'll just go with a screenshot for now.
    Thanks for replying.

  • Problem with importing animated gifs

    Hi i'm trying to use an animated gif in my project. Basically my after effects project is just a countdown from 10 to 0 while the animated gif spins continuously during the countdown. My problem is when I use the animated gif the background it is no longer transparent and the background is instead white. How do I make it transparent again in after effects? Next the animated gif is about a 2 second loop, it won't let me drag the bars to extend the time to 10 seconds. How do I loop it for 10 seconds?
    These aren't musts, but if anyone could, help would be greatly appreciated:
    1) For the text effect 'numbers' (which I used for the countdown effect) it always renders really shaky and bouncy when i preview it. Is that normal?
    2) It has the time as 00:00:00:00 (type: timecode 30). How do I make so it only shows 00:00 ?
    Any help would be awesome.
    Thank you

    My problem is when I use the animated gif the background it is no longer transparent and the background is instead white.
    Correct. As a conmpositing program, AE requires proper Alpah transparency, not palette-based transparency. File must be converted to an image sequence with Alpha channel.
    Next the animated gif is about a 2 second loop, it won't let me drag the bars to extend the time to 10 seconds. How do I loop it for 10 seconds?
    Footage interpretation --> Loops
    1) For the text effect 'numbers' (which I used for the countdown effect) it always renders really shaky and bouncy when i preview it. Is that normal?
    Yes, it's normal if you are using a non-monospaced font. Use a suitable font.
    2) It has the time as 00:00:00:00 (type: timecode 30). How do I make so it only shows 00:00 ?
    Use multiple layers and effects and mask them out.

  • Problem to create animated gif using transparent frames

    Hi, everyone:
    My name is Edison, I am playing with Gif89Encoder utility classes to make an animated gif which is a requirement for my course work.
    I got some problem about the transparent frames. I used the png image as the frame to create the animated gif,
    those pngs have transparent colors and the background is totally transparent, when i create the animated the gif with those
    frames, the animated gif display the colors but without transparency for those colors, but the background is transparent as expected.
    I am not sure if I should IndexGif89Frame or DirectGif89Frame for the colors from the Gif89encoder package.
    Is there anyone got the same problem and knows how to fix it?
    The following is how i setup the colors in my png file, the alpha channel is 80.
    Color[] colours = new Color[7];
              colours[0] = new Color(255, 255, 255, 0);
              colours[1] = new Color(128, 128, 255, 80);

              colours[5] = new Color(204,102,255,80);
              colours[6] = new Color(255, 0, 0, 80);The code i did to generate gif:

    Does anyone has any idea to determine the frame number required by After Effect and in consecutive sequence (i.e 0,1,2,3 ...).
    Thanks

    Huh? What are the comp settings? They must be 720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for PAL with teh respective correct pixel aspect ratios. Also make sure to disable/enable audio as needed in bothe the main Output Module settings >>>and<<< the MPEG-II exporter (just in case this will be the next error that pops up.

    Hi:
      Read the ref. I converted the 1.3 gb video to a 137mb swf (instead of directly to flv) using Free Video To Flash Converter. That swf plays fine including the sound.
    I opened it it after effect and rendered as an flv (90+mb) and when I play it, no sound. When I tried playing the source swf in after effects, no sound.
    I set the render parameters to include the sound but nothing. What is going on?

Egde animate file .oam is not good for old website navigation. It can't be inserted in freeshop site from navigation... I use logo file .oam just for example here - http://e-shoptagras.graphicsrim.eu
    In reality I want swf file, but we don't find why logo flickering? here http://tagraseshop.graphicsrim.eu
    All file's are transparenty - https://mega.co.nz/#!f8B2CD5R!J8uCJt9Sdq4Suz4HLhTHz8bzJcSWXMBIKcKZgkD3z8c
    I need help! Please!

  • A mystery: Animated GIF not displaying correctly.

    I've started adding images to a >1 year old game that I kind of abandoned, which formerly used hard-coded graphics. I'm looking to use a 4 frame long animated GIF of what would appear to be a rotating blade-like enemy. (Not actually a blade, but this is irrelevant.)
    The GIF which I am using can be viewed here: ftp://72.141.73.226/ftproot/av.gif
    I have taken screenshots of the 4 frames I am receiving, and slowed the result down here: ftp://72.141.73.226/ftproot/broken.gif
    I'm not quite sure why it's doing that.. Any ideas?
    Also, I've got it programmed so that when the enemies are defeated, they emit a small explosion, which is also an animated GIF. It can be found here: ftp://72.141.73.226/ftproot/boom.gif
    The images are drawn by the class AI class, which extends JPanel (For the ImageObserver status). The image displayed is determined when a method called changeImg is called.
    public void changeImg (String img) {
        this.img = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(img);
    }When the health reaches 0, the 'boom' image (found above) is put onto the object's 'img' variable, which is later called like this:
    g.drawImage (img, x-w/2, y, x+w/2, y+h, 0, 0, 20, 20, this);Essentially, it draws the image at certain coordinates depending on the position of the user, and sizes the image depending on the size of the user (variable with difficulty.) and you can see where it is using 'this' as an ImageObserver, because it just so happens to be one. (This is the only way I know to display images.)
    There's a small problem, however. When the 'boom' graphic is loaded, it floats around in memory, not being drawn, because it's not being told to, but evidently goign through the animation anyway. This means that all explosions are synchronized, so say I defeat an enemy at frame 0, and then another one at frame 5. The 10 frame explosion is already half-complete, so the second enemy's explosion animation is the latter half of the explosion animation, followed by the inital half. I tried creating the GIF so that it would be set to 'play once', but then after the first enemy exploded, all enemies would display the last frame of the explosion, instead of playing the animation once.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    (This isn't for homework, don't worry. I finished this assignment over a year ago, and just decided to add to it a bunch.)

    @OP:
    Are you aware of the fact that your FTP server is wide open?

  • Problem to display Animated Gif from HTML into JEditorPane

    I have a problem displaying animated gif that comes from URL (HTML) into JEditorPane.
    Let me show you the source I have:
    * @author Dobromir Gospodinov
    * @version 1.0
    * Date: Dec 6, 2002
    * Time: 6:47:53 PM
    package test.advertserver;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.io.IOException;
    public class Test {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              JFrame frame = new JFrame();
              JEditorPane ed = new JEditorPane();
              try {
                   ed.setPage("http://localhost:8200/servlet?key=value");
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
              JPanel panel = new JPanel();
              panel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(500, 500));
              panel.add(ed);
              frame.getContentPane().add(panel);
              frame.pack();
              frame.setVisible(true);
    }Part of the returned from servlet HTML includes an img tag:
    <img src="/images/MyAnimatedGif.gif" alt="animated gif comment" width="480" height="50"  border="0">Let us assume that MyAnimatedGif.gif has 10 frames and gif is looped - when the 10th is dipslayed it has to display the 1st and so on.
    JEditorPane displays frames from 1 to 10 correctly but does not start from the first again. Instead JEditorPane displays a broken image.
    I locate where the problem arise:
    JEditorPane has an HTMLEditorKit that creates javax.swing.text.html.ImageView instance for every IMG tag.
    And here is the problem:
    ImageView has an ImageObserver necessary for the asynchronous image download. ImageObserver has the imageUpdate method. But this imageUpdate method is never called with ALLBITS flag raised up. Instead, after the last frame of MyAnimatedGif.gif is downloaded the imageUpdate method is called with flag ERROR raised up. Obviously this is a bug of Sun's implementation. Finaly the flag ALLBITS has to be received for normal end of image observing. But ALLBITS flag does not come.
    So, can anybody help me how to load an animated gif within JEditorPane completely.
    Thank You in advance,
    Dobromir Gospodinov
    P.S. If somebody of you wants to debbug what happens within ImageView will have to implement it (and related classes too, because of the limited package visability) borrowing the source from Sun's ImageView.

    I'm also having this problem with java 1.4.1 I discovered that some animated gifs work fine, while others stop animating. Running with java 1.3.1 fixed the problem. I'm going to report this as a bug
