After resuming a rented movie my apple tv had to re-download the entire movie.
As above, I rented a movie and was half way through. I tried to resume from the last position about 24hours later and the Apple TV has started re-downloading. I thought the whole movie was downloaded yesterday? This is my first rented movie... is this normal? BTW The message from Apple was that I had 48 hours to finish watching the movie (why wouldn't the movie stay on the tv until expiry?

This aspect of AppleTV2 is very frustrating for the many many users with slower internet.
By that I mean <6 Mbps for HD.
AppleTV2 has 8GB of solid state memory.
An average HD movie would be around 3-4GB.
It should be able to hold at least one HD movie rental until expiry and stream local content if it had a FIFO type buffer that emptied and prefilled as playback proceeded.
IMO it's badly designed - or at least there is the assumption everyone has unlimited fast internet - millions don't.

They could if they wanted to quite easily implement a warning system to users with slow connections that a subsequent operation would delete a rental and ask permission to proceed - this could be a user selectable setting that could be turned on so as not to annoy those with fast/unlimited connections. Even people with fast connections may get their connection throttled after using bandwidth quotas, and they may have monthly download quotas too.

Before family share my kids were signed in under my apple ID. They had the ability to just stream whatever Disney movies they wanted that we owned. Now they have to download the entire movie to watch it? Seems a bit over kill to me. Plus those movies fill up their entire ipads.
Think of all this as two entities, 1. your Apple ID's and 2. Apple services (and by services I mean iCloud, iTunes, Home Sharing, Messages, FaceTime, Support Communities etc etc).
You can choose to use a different ID for each service, thereby creating the flexibility you are looking for.
For iCloud (which syncs contacts, mail, calendars etc) I suggest you each use your own ID, this means you will have your own contacts etc.
For iTunes, you might use separate ID's or you might both use the same one, I make no suggestion here because there are benefits to both ways. You may want to keep your music, movie, books and app purchases separate or you may want to unite them to avoid potentially paying for things twice.
For Home Sharing I suggest you use just one ID, it doesn't matter who's it is, so long as you both use the same one, this will ensure that any device using home Sharing can see and play the content from anyone's library on the same network (regardless of which ID it uses for iTunes) that is logged into the same home sharing account. -

Help!! First of all I am a senior and have no idea what I am doing. Turned on the Apple tv and it said downloading the lastest -cannot remember the rest.
There was a Apple symbol and a dowmload space under it. Nothing is happening. It has been about 25 minutes. What do I do??It probably did not turn itself off. It most likely went into "sleep".
Did you try to restart the Apple TV? That is what solved the problem for me.
Go to the main AppleTV menu - you might have to press the Menu button a couple of times to get there - select Settings, then Select General, scroll down to Restart and select that.
As long as you don't have a "Do not unplug" message on your screen, unplugging the power cable, waiting a minute, then plugging it back in should accomplish the same thing. I always prefer using the menu method over unplugging.
If that doesn't work, I fear you might have to contact Apple. They will likely tell you to restore your AppleTV to factory settings. That will be a pain in the neck since they will need to walk you through it. They might do that for you at an Apple store. I'm a senior citizen too, and it's easy for me to look helpless - even though I've worked in computers and networking for a very long time.

How do I resume a rented movie???
I am unable to finish watching a movie I started last night. I have followed the directions:
"If your download is interrupted, go to Setting > iTunes Store and select Check for Rentals. Apple TV will connect with the iTunes Store and will resume download". This does not work. Help?Welcome to the Apple community.
A number of people have reported similar issues recently, many appear to have found a discrepancy of some kind in their account settings and making changes to these settings or simply resetting them has resolved the matter.
Check your account details are correct, check that you are using the correct details for Location, Region and Time Zone. You may want to change these settings and then change them back to see if that helps.
You might also try logging out of and then back into your iTunes account (Settings > iTunes Store > Apple ID’s > Sign Out) and restarting your router. (Some have reported that after doing this, they need to check for rentals even though it may report that there aren’t any, after which rentals once again appear in the ‘movies’ feature)
Rentals should appear under their own heading in the ‘Movies’ feature, you might also check at Settings > iTunes Store > Check For Rentals. -
Never before have i ever updated my iphone off the computer, there has been issue with backs up. So i went to back up my iphone 4s, it needed to be updated. so i updated it, during the update something had occur and my iphone 4s screen says connect to itunes be it wont connect???? i tried so many things. I have just bought a MacAir. The Mac shop moved my data over two days ago and my husband picked it up. The apple shop down loaded my emails up until 2 days ago. But I have just started the computer and it has not brought in emails from the past 2 days. Can anyone advize me what to do? I am an Apple virgin after only ever using PCs.

Is there anyway to fix this problem? Im seriously considering getting away from apple as bad as I hate too. I love the apple OS but you can never get a hold of customer service, there is only one style of phone, and now apparently, you have to pay extra for "apple" accessories becasue others wont work.
Well I am having the same issue and I had not had to worry about getting a "licensed charger." The poster who responded offered not real insite and was rude to boot. I am also looking for the fix on this . My iphone will not even charge now on any charger. What the heck. I am not trying to treaten anyone either when I say I am frustrated with my iphone which in my case I have only had for a few months. I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not downloading properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item. -
A bit of help please?
Try a force restart by holding the power and home button down at the same time. One of two things will PROBABLY happen; 1) It will boot into iOS as normal. 2) You will get an iTunes logo with a USB cable at the bottom. If the second happens you will need to plug it into iTunes to do a restore. If neither of these happen, force restart again. Once the phone powers off, let go of both buttons and push and hold the home button and plug the phone into iTunes. This will force the phone into recovery mode. Proceed with a restore at that point.

After watching a rented movie from Apple TV, it appears to disappear not giving us the option to re-watch again. Has the policy changed? We used to be able to see the "rented" status for 24 hours, indicating how much rental time we had left.
The 24 hour limit for the US hasn't changed, you should still be able to watch it as many times as you like within those 24 hours (and the 30 day limit from renting it, whichever ends the soonest). You should also be able to see the remaining time - from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1415 :
On your device, the time remaining for you to finish watching the movie appears near the movie title. -
Hi, after installation of itunes software from Apple website successfully, when i enter the "Accept" Button in the Software Licence Agreement Terms & Conditon, I get error message "Tunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.
