After Update, Mac Runs 5 x SLOWER!

My G5 uses all original software and has never been online.
I downloaded these files on my laptop and installed them on my G5 at home:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1045.html
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1045combo.html
Now, instead of 30 seconds to boot up, it takes 3 minutes.
Applications load time increased.
Computer makes clicking noises.
I feel as if I am being scammed into playing the upgrade game. How to uninstall the upates?

The silence is deafening.
Don't tell me there is no way to uninstall it...
There's no way to uninstall it. If you want it back to the way it was before, you'll need to boot from the Restore discs that came with the computer and do an Archive and Install. That will at least keep your non-system files intact.
FWIW, I've never had a problem with any of the system updates on my G5 or my PowerBook. In any event, before doing a system update, you should check your startup disc for problems with either Disk Utility or something like DiskWarrior. Then, repair permissions on that drive. Next, install the updates. After the reboot, repair permissions again.
Of the two files you mentioned in your original post, the combo updater is generally the better one to use, as it contains all the changed files from 10.4.0 to 10.4.5, so there's theoretically less of a chance that some file won't get updated correctly. Anyway, there's no need to install both of those files. And, it's not uncommon for the first boot after the install to take several minutes. Future reboots will generally be much shorter.

  • Photoshop CS5 - colour settings in Print menu not working after update Mac OSX maverick

After upgrading to Maverick OSX on the iMac printing from CS5 via Epson R3880 is not working correctly. In Print Settings menu the drop downs for Colour and Colour Settings are greyed out. I already re-installed PS and installed the new drivers from epson. Any ideas?

but after choosing PS manages color, the options in the print menu for choosing color (color or b&W) and color settings are not available anymore. They used to be the last three years I printed with photoshop/epson 3880.
Instead they are greyed out now.

If Photoshop managed color, then the controls in the printer driver are supposed to be grayed out - that's how Apple specifies drivers to work (because only one party should be managing the print color).
So what you're describing is perfectly normal.

  • Syncing problems - itunes podcasts cloud clutter: whenever I sync iphone and mac after updating mac, mac adds already listened to podcasts to iphone. This never happened before iOS update with iphone 4S

This was an iOS update that came around iphone 4S that overwrites the phone with what has been updated on the mac. The mac doesn't seem to know I've already listened to something on the phone. It redownloads the podcast to the mac, marking it as unplayed. Then, when I sync the iphone with mac (after updating mac), the mac adds already listened to podcasts to iphone marked as upplayed. The way it used to work was that the itunes on your mac (or PC) acted as a master content controller to whatever was on any of your devices. Ever since the cloud was added, the mac seems to have lost this ability to be a master content controller. Now the cloud clutters up itunes.
Another problem that the cloud, itunes and podcasts is that any deleted from the mac will show up again, with links to the cloud downloaded again. This really clutters things up. It seems like the cloud has become the master controller, even though I don't use it.
Any idea how to solve these problems? Any idea which can be used as a master content controller?

Yes, I don't disagree with the first part. However, I could sync my iphone (to itunes 9.2.1) when I had 4.1 installed from another computer).
I think that I am limited to an old os (10.4.11) on my mac as it is old (pre-intel) and therefore I can't update my OS. If this isn't the case, then an update to my OS could solve the problem. I'll check the requirements of the newer OS now.

  • Downloading issue after updating Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.9

I got an information about there're new versions for iturns, safari, Quick Time, Mac OS X, so I clicked the "update" for all. But after updating, I found the speed of downloading softwares from internet become so slow-more than 30 times slower! I don't know whether this problem is because of the system updating from my original 10.4.9, or other reasons?

That's a lot of updates to digest all at once.
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

  • After update, Garageband 10 is deadly slow in Mavericks 10.9.3

After updating to Mavericks 10.9.3 and to Garageband 10.0.2, Garageband is very slow, permanently triggering the beach ball - especially when editing piano rolls.
Looking at the Activity Monitor at such moments, I see that the WindowServer process takes 100% CPU.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • After update Mac OS 10.9.1 Trim Enabler does not work anymore!

After updating from Mac OS 10.9.0 to 10.9.1 the program Trim Enabler does not work anymore and my 4 SSDs from Samsung and Kingston are no longer supported.
    What can I do?
    Should I scrap my SSDs?
Why does Apple do such things?
Will Apple that I switch to Windows? There Trim works with all SSDs and BluRay will not boycott!

Apple does not support TRIM for SSDs that were not factory
installed and TRIM Enabler is a hack to get around this.  Any
hack is always subject to being disabled, or worse, with any
system update whether it is OSX or Windows.

  • BIG problem with Mail after updating Mac OS X Leopard to 10.5.7

    Hi everyone,
after updating OS X Leopard to 10.5.7, I noticed that all of my Mail accounts had disappeared. If I try to set them up again, Mail doesn't seem to be able to store them and after quitting and re-launching, they're gone. This had never happened under 10.5.6 or previous OS.
Strangely enough, only the MobileMe account seems to be stored.
I tried repairing the permissions, checking the hard disk, re-installing Mail from the Leopard DVD, deleting the com.apple.mail.plist file. Nothing seems to work so far.
Any suggestions? I haven't been able to use Mail for almost a month now. I used to have 6/7 accounts and I can't stand having to check their web-based version. I want Mail to work as it always has!

Rest assured it doesn't happen to all Macs with 10.5.7. I'd start a new topic thread here:

You'll get a wider audience, and won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them.

  • After Update Mac OS 10.6.5 my macbook freeze

Immediately after updated to release 10.6.5 I encountered the following problem that occurs at least 3-4 votle day and apparently when I put my Macbook Pro under stress (quickly move windows, view many youtube videos, and any kind of excessive load on the machine): the screen freezes with all the windows blocked, and I can only move the the mouse cursor. To solve the problem I turn off the machine while holding down the power button!
The Apple Hardware Test found no hardware problem and it is strange that these problems occurred immediately after upgrading the operating system.
Please, How can I fix this? Does anyone have my same problem?
    Thanks!

Do you think it's a hardware problem?
I don't think because it's occured immediately after the update and because it's the same problem of these threads:
    - System Freezes Randomly after 10.6.3 Update (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2383288&tstart=30)

  • After updating 10.9.2, VERY slow startup

Hello, I updated 2 days ago to Mavericks 10.9.2.
    I am using a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro i7 2,66Ghz 8GB RAM.
I was using Mavericks without any problem but since this update it takes AGES to startup my macbook, about half an hour...
Once finally starts it goes completely smooth and fine...
    Any suggestions?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes  after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
