  • How to change the power supply to the CD/DVD Drive so that it is off by default?

When running on battery I often use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon from XP to "unplug" the Mat****a CD/DVD drive in order to safe some battery life.(Does it?) I use Fn+Tab to bring it back to life. I wonder if there is a way to make my Notebook (M400) boot with the power supply to the Drive off by default. By the way, any idea where I can find the extra battery for the CD/DVD-Drive slot and at which price?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello Robert
If you check start page you will see that this support forum is not any kind of Toshiba support directly but user-to-user forum. But you are not alone and many users expect that some Toshiba support team sit in the office and wait to write answers.
Anyway there are many Toshiba notebook users with very good knowledge and also enthusiasts who try to help other guys with different issues and also share own experience.
Professionalism is not forum but action when you need assistance because of hardware damage or something similar. If you need competent answers and help every authorized service partner should be able to give you info you need. But please dont mix service partner and Toshiba because it is not the same.
Anyway I have found info that you can use additional (second expansion battery) and it should be batteries with part numbers PA3510U-1BAL and PA3510U-1BRL. I can not tell you how much it costs but you can find it alone using Google.
Back to your first question: If I am understand you right you want to save more power and because of that you want to disconnect ODD. It is nice idea but you have obviously misunderstood something. "Safely Remove Hardware option is there to help operating system and say this hardware part will be removed and dont exist anymore but it does not mean physically disconnection from other hardware.
If you need more power use second battery and enjoy your life.
If you have more questions you are welcome. Many users here have M400 and I hope in the future some of them will participate a little bit more.
    Have a nice day! :)

  • No power supply cable for second hard drive

Hard drive in PC is crashing mechanically.  Want to ghost a second hard drive before first drive crashes completely.   Bought duplicate of existing hard drive, but there is no power supply cable/connector for it.  Have SATA plug, but cannot power up second hard drive.  What do I do?
    This question was solved.

    LB1815, welcome to the forum.
If I understand your problem correctly, this is the connector that you need.  It converts a single SATA power cable to two connectors.  This allows you to connect two drives with on cable.  There are many other brands available on Newegg.  This is just one example.

  • Is the 65W power supply killing small laptop hard drives?

Apple is NOT shipping 45W power supply units to my country (Costa Rica) and the authorized resellers are selling 65W power supply units to PowerBook 12" and iBooks owners, saying that older and smaller laptops can use the 65W unit without problems.
In 1 month, 3 of my friends have lost their powerbook 12" hard drives, all of them were using 65W units.... is it possible that the 65W unit is damaging the hard drive?
Apple documents don't mention any kind of problem related to using the wrong power supply, but doesn't say it's ok either.

Well the authorized resellers are the ones you should
take this up with. If they won't listen, call
AppleCare. Computers are particularly sensitive to
power supply variations. Here is one article which
    the resellers should read:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75448
I actually printed that document and went to the store to show them they were selling the wrong adapter, but they said Apple is no longer sending/selling 45W adapters to them and they said also that Apple gave them a memo saying that 65W adapters cause no troubles to smaller laptops.
As you can see in the article there's no warning about using wrong adapters.
Hard drives shouldn't be affected by power supply
variations, and given the fact the computer only
takes as much power as it needs, you are more likely
    to have a problem putting a 45 W adapter in a 65 W
    unit than vice versa.
Even so, your friends could have all lucked out and
gotten a single bad batch sent to Costa Rica.
Yeah, this is absolutely possible, but what are the chances that the three laptops using wrong adapters had hard drive problems?...
I basically want to know if this is happening on other countries (the "no 45W adapters" thing) and if also the hard drive problem could be related to the 65W one.
Regardless, what happened to their original adapters?
One guy lost it on a trip to the beach; the cable that goes to the computer was broken on the other two.
Thanks for taking time to write this answer!

  • Power Supply switching

    Hi,
I am not sure whether this is the correct forum to post this question but I think it may be a problem which may be common and someone may be able to help.
I am currently using a TTi TSX3510P DC power supply to drive a simple electro-magnet. One end of the windings goes to the positive and one to the negative of the supply (obviously) which allows me to ramp the current up through lab view to +10 amps crteating a magnetic field. The problem is I would now like to drive the current to -10 amps, the simple solution is to obviously switch the wires around on the supply but I wish to perform an automatic sweep utilising lab view from -10 to +10 amps. I am sure that there is circuitry out there to perform this operation. If anyone knows where and how to utilise this circuitry with labview I would be much obliged.
    Thanks
    Regards
    Marc

You might want to check into NI's USB based DAQ. Since you are ramping using GPIB to control the supply I'm presuming that it is changing relatively slowly, which would allow the USB DAQ. I don't know what their price is in the UK, they start out around $245US with both analog and digital. You would also need a relay with: contacts rated at the maximum current expected, which should also be powered by a separate power supply and have its own driver circuitry (DAQ cards generally don't supply sufficient current to run relays directly). A US company, ELK products, makes a relay card with the appropriate circuitry, for about $20 US. I know that one model, ELK-924, has contacts rated to 7A @ 30VDC, I don't know if that is "hot switched" or just what they are rated for. I think hot switched as they have a separate 10A @125VAC rating. You would need a small 12V @~1A power supply to provide it with power (a "Wall Wart" supply should be fine), but it only requires the control signal to supply 1.2mA, with most DAQ digital I/O capabilities. You would need to be careful not to switch the relay while the electromagnets full current was flowing, the field collapse would generate a large voltage/current across the relay's contacts. The normal method of putting a reverse diode across the windings wouldn't work with your required polarity reversals.
    Hope this helps,

  • FireWire / MacBook Pro / External 7200 rpm Drive / External Power Supply / Daisychaining

I would like to use FireWire from my MacBook Pro to an external 7200 rpm drive (Fantom GreenDrive Quad with FireWire capability) that uses an external power supply.  Are there any issues with using the external power supply?  I read in an archived Mac forum regarding Thunderbolt that there might be (for Thunderbolt, which I'm not using).  The archived info wasn't entirely clear to me as to whether it meant not to power up (turn on or plug in) an external power supply for a daisychained device while the MacBook was on or the daisychain had devices in use, say, or whether it meant don't use (daisychain) any devices that use external power supplies.
Once that question is resolved (about FireWire relative to the external power supply for the external hard drive), my next question is, Can I safely daisychain also? If so, what protocol would I use for that, relative to the power supply for each daisychained hard drive?

I have had no issues using daisychained FireWire 800 external drives with leaving the drives turned on, power supplies on, and restarting my MBP.  The MBP starts up and sees the drives and runs fine.

  • How do I use LabVIEW to control and vary the voltage on my Agilent Power Supply and simultaneously record temp from 1 DMM and voltage from another DMM?

I am using an Agilent Power Supply  to apply a voltage to a
thermistor to heat an Al chassis.  I want to use LabVIEW to tell
the power supply to apply 5V for 10 minutes, then step to 7V for 10
minutes, etc.  I am completely new to LabVIEW, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
In addition to that, I want to place a type J thermocouple onto the Al
surface and use a Keithley 2000 DMM to monitor the temperature (it has
a built in conversion from V to Temp for type J).  I will also be
using another Kelthley 2000 DMM to record the output voltage of a new
uncalibrated thermocouple.  I would like to collect the output
voltage for this uncalibrated thermocouple and the temperature reading
from the type J simultaneously.  How should I go about doing this
in LabVIEW?  I will be using version 6.1.  The power supply
and DMMs will be connected to a PC using GPIB.
Again any suggestions would be greatly appreciated- I have no idea
where to begin on such a project.  I have taught myself how to
make a basic VI- converting temp in oC to oF, but  that is as far
    as my knowledge goes.

What you want to do should be fairly straightward and a good way to learn labview.
First off, if you haven't already, I would download the drivers for the Keithley and Agilent instruments.  I found the keithley drivers at the link below.  You will need to find the labview drivers for the Agilent PS at their website.  Drivers are the VI's you will use in your program to control the insturments.
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=E3B19B3E90B0659CE034080020E74861
If you open Labview and go to the help menu and click on Labview bookshelf there is alot of information on getting you started coding labview.   This should get you started, if you have anymore questions just ask in this same thread and I am sure you will get all the help you need.

  • How can i change the voltage of my power supply using my pci gpib 488.2 driver?

I need to be able to control the voltage outputed by the power supply. I have a pci gpib 488.2 and I downloaded the correct driver. I also don't no exactly how to use the communicator included in the measurement and automation explorer. When ever I type in the commands I get an error. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
    thank you

First see if you can establish communications with the power suppy using Meas and Automation explorer (MAX for short). If you can find your GPIB card in the directory tree choose it and then use the scan for instruments tool. If it can see your power supply it will give you it's address. Choose it and try the Communicate with my instrument tool. It will send a IDN? command to that address and it might return a string if the instrument understands the command. If not you will need to dig through the power supply manual to find the correct commands.

    Hi neilchuang,
A read timeout error is usually caused by an error on the command string sent.
The first thing I would check is if the instrument requires a termination character at the end of each message (such as linefeed). I noticed in the Spy capture that the commands do not have a termination character attached. This means that the instruments never recognized that you completed the query command, it doesn't execute the requested action and as a consequence of that it doesn't have any data to return.
One question: Is the instrument detected by MAX when you scan for instruments?. If yes then you can assume that the GPIB software and hardware are properly installed. The scan for instruments sends the *IDN? (terminated by a linefeed). You can right-cli
ck on the instrument entry in MAX and select "Communicate with instrument". Notice that at the end of the command the linefeed is included (\n).
Double check with the instrument manual if the commands sent are the right ones.
Finally, there is an instrument driver available in the idnet library: www.ni.com/idnet. Search for 3631. Since you are working in C you can use the LabWindows/CVI Plug and Play driver. Even if you decide not to use the instrument driver, you can still use it as an excellent reference on how to program with the instrument.
    Hope this helps!.

  • GPIB control of HP 6034A power supply

I would like to find drivers for GPIB control of HP 6034A power supply (LabVIEW 6.1). There are drivers HP6xxxA for power supplies 6033A, 6035A, 6038A, ... Could anyone give me information how to modify these drivers for 6034A or any other directive. Jokut

You might post your answer in the Instruments Connectivity >> GPIB section of the NI Exchange forum.
    Roland - LV DSC Exchanger
PS: Most of the time you might just change the initialisation string of the instrument setup function/command if the instrument is similar to the dirver you already have. But this is all relative to the instrument - Unfortunatly I don't know the driver nor your instrument.

  • Hameg power supply HM7044 ieee 488 (GPIB) device control

    Dear All,
I have a power supply (Hameg HM7044) with a GPIB interface. It seems that there is no VI to control it in the HAMEG or the ni websites.
Since i am new to this kind of interface i have two questions.
-if i connect the device how do i know the address it is in.
-is there a general VI to interact with GPIB -ieee 488 devices?
    thank you in advance,
    thodoros

Well, there is a driver here but it is for RS-232 and for some stupid reason, they have password protected the VI. That should deserve a nasty message to them.
First, if you use an NI GPIB controller, you will get a program called Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). As part of the installation instructions, you will do a 'Scan For Instruments'. This will return a list of GPIB addresses for all of the connected instruments. Second, the information for setting the GPIB address is going to be in the instrument manual. If you don't have a manual, get one because you can't do a thing without one.
To communicating to GPIB instruments, the recomended API is VISA. The majority of the time, all that you will need is a VISA Write and a VISA Read.
You can learn some of the basics at the Instrument Control Fundamentals page.

  • Comand power supply through GPIB

Hi I am Michele De Santis,
I am trying to command a elind 500 KL power supply through GPIB with a NI PXI. I can easily read the values of current and voltage of the instrument with the VISA read block in LabView environment. The problem presents when I want to use the write VISA block, in other words when I want to put a voltage and current values from my PXI. The instrument put itself, after I send the command, in CCM (current costant mode, before it was in VCM voltage costant mode) at 0 V and 0 A and from this moment on, I can't switch the status of the power supply unless I dont turn the instrument off. Anyone knows why?
    Thanks!

    Hi Michele,
have you tryed to control yours Power Supply from another GPIB controller?

  • GPIB-Controlled XHR Power Supply and HP34401A DMM Conflict

    Dear Experts,
I downloaded a driver for XHR Power Supply from NI's website and used
it to controlled the power supply successfully via GPIB cable in
LabVIEW. However, when I used HP34401A digital meter to measure the
voltage from the power supply in the same way via GPIB cable, the XHR
power supply was shut down automatically although the meter read the
measurement correctly before shutting down. Since I am a new user of
LabVIEW, I do not know if it is a conflict of GPIB-Controlled
    instuments.
I would be most grateful if you could give me some advice and tell me how to solve this problem at your earliest convenience.
Thanks a lot for your attention and help,
    James

You can set LLO with the VISA GPIB Control REN function. This is on the Instrument I/O>VISA>VISA Advanced>Interface specific palette.
You do not use the same VISA session for two different instruments. Each must be different and unique. If they were the same, then the be would be using the same address and your program would not work.
To make a sinlg VI that will control both instruments, just take the functions you need from each and put them into a single VI. The author of the XAN power supply drivers did a kind of lame thing. The Getting Started VIs do not have their controls and indicators wired to the VIs connector pane so you would have to change this before using the Getting Started in another VI. I've attached a simple example that shows some of the other functions along with some 34401 functions in a single VI.
Before you get going, I would recomend that you take a LabVIEW programming class. Information can bge found at http://www.ni.com/devzone/lvzone/fundamentals.htm.
p.s. You should know that your email address is not available to forum users. If you wish an example program, you can request it be posted here but you need to provide the version of LabVIEW that you're using and you need to provide the exact name of the XAN driver you're using. I found three and don't know shich is which.

  • HP6032A Power supply GPIB problems

I saw a reply some time ago to someone who was having trouble with an HP6032A
    power supply.
I'm having trouble communicating reliably (reading from it, I think), and
my system (Mac) hangs constantly. If I limit the reads, I can go for several
days, but I normally read from it several times per minute and it hangs within
    hours.
Is anyone familiar with this problem?

    David,
Don't know if this will help or not. I have had trouble with some
of the HP Power Supplies (I think the 6032 among them).
I found that if I did not use the error checking it worked much better.
These are kinda cranky you might check all the settings and make sure
you are using the correct protocol and looking for the right number of
    bytes.
    Hope this helps
