Airport Extreme 5GHz Channel not available

Hi All
My Airport Extreme 5th Gen is now up and running.
The issue I have is that unless I give the 5GHz channel it's own name, my MacBook Pro will not pick it up - instead opting for the 2.4GHz channel. I know that distance and obstacles are a factor but in a test situation the MacBook is only a metre away from the Airport. If I give the 5GHz channel it's own name then I can select the 5GHz network and confirm the connection rate - this also works with Windows 7 machine in the same position with the signal strength being 'excellent'. So why when I have the same name for both channels will my machines only pick up the 2.4GHz signal?
Using two names would be okay exept that when I do this the 2.4GHz network slows completely and is unusable.
Last week I had a pretty good setup with an old Airport Extreme and now with the new 5th Gen unit I can either connect two machines at 5GHz or four machines at 2.4GHz - not a mixture of both. So basically I'm no better off than with my eight year old Airport Extreme.
I'm beginning to think that there is a defect with the new Airport Extreme unit - is there any simple checks I can do on the unit to confirm that it is operating correctly?
I'd really appreciate any help with this.
Phil

Update: Solved. I reset the Airport Extreme a number of times in succession and finally it just worked - not sure what the problem was.

  • PC Used to work with XP and airport Extreme Basestation but not with Vista

Please help, my PC Used to work with XP and airport Extreme Basestation but not now with Vista. I have a MacBook Pro connected and also a Mac Pro connected to the network on it and they still work, i have put the latest software on the PC and the firmware is up to date. The only thing i can see on the network on the PC is the basestation Hard Disk (shared also to the Macs) but i cannot connect with the password, i have tried everything in my knowledge, including formatting the machine and reinsatlling OS and changing security setting to no avail. Any ideas anyone?

  • Airport Extreme unit will not allow Windows devices to access WiFi

For the last 10 or so days, my Airport Extreme unit will not allow Windows based devices to access WiFi (ASUS laptop and Nokia Windows Phone). Our Apple devices have no issues (MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone, iPod). Settings were not changed but there may have been a program update? Have tried resetting without success. Today I tried to bypass the problem by creating guest network access - my MacBook Pro can access the guest network, but again, the Windows-based devices can't log in.
Airport packaging stipulates that this product will service both Apple and PC products. I'm stumped and this is a bit of an issue as my wife's PC has been cut off from the Web as well as my Windows phone. This Airport unit is fairly recent having been bought August or September of last year - so a recent purchase, but to get Apple assistance it appears I'd need to purchase service ticket... (Am using Mountain Lion 10.8.4 and Extreme 5th Gen.)
    Is there an easy solution?

    No software updates available.
Found a Network Options checkbox which blocked IPv6 connections in Airport Utility. Unchecked it, that didn't change anything, so I've returned it to its original setting. But under Internet Options, Airport is set to allow IPv6 connections. Strange that this unit would have settings that appear to contradict each other.
There was an access control panel - but to grant control here, I'd need an Apple address which my Mac would have but which the Windows devices would not, so that setting couldn't be used to address this problem.
So, no solution to the issue that I can see.

  • Requested circuit/channel not available

    Hello,
I have a problem with a PRI link. We have installed CCM 3.3(3) and a 3745 with a PRI link to the telco. The 3745 is configured as a MGCP gateway. When I try to initiate an outbound call, I get the following Q931 debug message:
    *Mar 1 01:47:14.967: ISDN Se3/0:15 Q931: TX -> SETUP pd = 8 callref = 0x0005
    Bearer Capability i = 0x8090A3
    Standard = CCITT
    Transer Capability = Speech
    Transfer Mode = Circuit
    Transfer Rate = 64 kbit/s
    Channel ID i = 0xA9839F

    Cause i = 0x82AC - Requested circuit/channel not available
When I try an inbound call I get a busy signal, and a similar debug message (if I use another router to initiate that ISDN call).
This is the "show ISDN state" screen:
    ISDN Serial3/0:15 interface
    dsl 0, interface ISDN Switchtype = primary-net5
    L2 Protocol = Q.921 L3 Protocol(s) = CCM-MANAGER

    Active dsl 0 CCBs = 0
    The Free Channel Mask: 0xFFFF7FFF
    Number of L2 Discards = 1, L2 Session ID = 13
So I presume there is nothing wrong with the signalization??
I contacted the telco person, and he told be that he sees some kind of BLOCKING state on our side of the PRI link.
Please help or give at least some guidelines what to try next!
    Thanks in advance...

Haha, 11 years later this post save us on CUCM 8.6.2, disabled "Inhibit restarts at PRI initialization" Works Excellent on the E1 affected.
    THANKS A LOOOT.

  • TV Says Channel Not Available

So My TV says channel not available and I called Verzion and they are not able to help me.  I pay almost $200 dollars a month for service and I get the run around.  I am about to cancel my service if someone doesnt call me back or send a tech out to find out why is it that I am calling twice in one month for the same issue.

One of course is to make sure its a channel you are suppose to get.
Complaining here is just complaining to your Peers.  YOu need to follow through with contacting Verizon support.  http://www22.verizon.com/content/contactus/

  • Airport extreme software will not install on vista, how can i still configure the router?

airport extreme software will not install on vista, how can i still configure the router?  Trying to help someone with vista get an airpot extreme configured.  10.0.1.1 does not work, the software will not install correctly on their vista machine.  How can I get into the base tation and lock it down?

Hi - Vista can be tricky - I need more info to see if I can be of some help - first, is the Vista machine a desktop or a laptop and is it fully up to date with Windows Update (sp2 or higher)? - next, are you trying to install Airport Utility version 5.5.3 which is the correct one for Vista? - and finally, what do you mean "it will not install" - what kind of error messages or evidence are you getting?

  • One TV keeps getting message this channel not available

OK so one TV an older one, in my home keeps getting the message this channel not available.  I went through ll the trouble shooting steps.  My other two TVs are fine but they are new one's.  This is my grandpas' old one.

I'm sure it happens to many channels from time to time, because that is what happens to me.  On the DVR or on the HD STB.  Tonight I sat down to watch the Yankees play the Phillies on ESPN.  My 2 favorite teams, very excited.  At first ESPN doesn't load, then I get the BSOD w/ the white letters in the middle of the screen telling me the channel is unavailable.  It provides me w/ 2 options.  Option 1 is to switch away from this channel and back again (didn't work).  Option 2 is to call the toll free number, input a code and everything will be fine.
So I called the toll free number, entered the codes as prompted, and listened to the robot lady while she reset my DVR.  She told me to look for the yellow light to the left of the display after the reset and if the yellow light wasn't there, to turn on the DVR using the power button on the DVR.  I did not see the yellow light, so I turned the power on as instructed by the robot lady.  However, still no yellow light.  The robot lady is only prompting me to say next, repeat the instructions for the #%&^*(*&%@!!!#%$^ yellow light, or say problem fixed.  When I took her up on her offer of more info, she simply repeated the thing about the yellow light.
How about adding a prompt to her repertoire asking if the yellow light isn't there.... I guarantee this will be the most used prompt.
Meanwhile, I am too experienced and sane to call for tech support, live chat is always unavailable, so I am left waiting for some verizon kool-aid-drinking "guru" to tell me my coax is bad in the forums.
    Good night.

  • Channel not available. and bad gateway

TO add to our new fios installation woes we are now getting channel not available error on one of our boxes as well as the bad gateway error.
I discontected all the coax and reconeted and tried all the trouble shooting steps.. any advice?
    Thanks
I should add this is only happening on a few channels that i can find. syfi hd is one.  ALso im not seeing this issue on our main box.
UPDATE: channel not available fixed by tech who installed the proper spiltters.

Glad to hear the channel issue is fixed. We would like to help with the gateway problem. I need to get come circuit information from you. I have sent you a private message to get more information.

  • Airport Extreme 5GHz N Channel assignment

How can I set the channel on the 5GHz Airport Extreme N? The only setup option I have is "Automatic" which I don't want. I need to be able to set the channel myself. How do I do this?

Ok, good to hear that it worked, though I did not realize you are working on a windows PC (crtl button instead of the option button). I read this solution somewhere on a Dutch forum a few months ago. Indeed those kind of options are not mentioned in the documentation from Apple as far as I know.

  • Airport Extreme 5ghz not connecting to internet?

Hello, I just installed a new Airport Extreme in Bridge mode to be a wireless AP for my FIOS setup. I have found that the 5Ghz wireless seems to not connect to the internet. If I switch my iphone to the 2.4Ghz wireless it connected to the internet just fine, but if I connect to the 5Ghz wireless I have a strong connection to the Airport but no connection to the web. My 2nd Gen Apple tv had the same connection issue as the iphone so that has been leading me to look at the Airport as the issue. Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas.
    Thank you

    I fixed it myself.
It was not a computer related problem. We have a network registration procedure that I forgot to do before the internet works.

  • Airport Extreme, 5GHz and Plaster Walls = Confusion

    Hey Guys,
I'm hoping that someone can help me understand what's going on at my house with my Airport Extreme. I purchased the AEX a little over a year ago and found it to work pretty well for coverage at my house and backyard. Then last fall, I got an original iPad that had horrible connectivity issues on my wi-fi at my house. In troubleshooting the problem, I changed several of my AEX settings. I removed the guest network and also merged the 2.4 and 5GHz network names. This particular iPad (my wife's worked fine with the AEX) would work fine on other routers and ended up being "captured" by Apple. The replacement worked fine on the network, but I never re-enabled the guest network or split out the 5GHz network name.
Skip ahead to this summer and I find that my coverage outside was nowhere near as robust as it had been in the past. (Also, some spots in my living room were showing signal, but an iPad would have to be lifted overhead on occasion to get data to flow.) Before I got the Airport, I'd used a couple routers running DD-WRT and set up WDS to cover the backyard when I was outside. I wanted to see if I could use the WDS router to extend my Airport network, and in doing research, it seemed the best thing was to buy an Airport Express - especially since I wanted to upgrade my travel router as well. I bought the Express and plugged it in and it just worked....however, it didn't work very well. I couldn't find the sweet spot for location - either the signal was weak at my target or the Express was too far away from the Extreme and the throughput was bad.
Add to that, I was reading about using the Express as a travel router on these forums - two issues kept coming up. 1) it's getting harder to find wired connections in hotels and 2) it's not possible to configure the Express with an iPad/iPhone. So when I saw a ZuniConnect Travel IV available for $41, I decided to return the Express and purchase the ZuniConnect for travel and just "live with" my network issues. (Perhaps I'll try to use the Zuni to extend the network to the backyard if I'm spending lots of time there.)
Now here's what I hope you can help with.... When I removed the Express from the configuration, the Extreme is giving me much better coverage. While playing around with the settings to see if I could get the express to work better, I split the 2.4 and 5GHz network names and re-enabled the Guest network. Now I don't get the dropouts on my couch and the backyard coverage is about what it was when I purchased the Extreme. However, I seem to get the best coverage with the 5GHz band, even though my house is from the 30's and has plaster and lath internal walls and the exterior is Stucco held on by a wire mesh. Does any of this make sense? It seems that my iPad (now using an iPad2) would get stuck on one side or the other and not automatically switch between the 2.4 and 5Gz bands and I would get no throughput when sitting on my couch. Now that I have them named, I might have to manually switch them, but I can stay connected with no problems. Any thoughts or is it just wishful thinking????
    Brackintosh

    Two thoughts:
    1) A WDS configuration does impose a performance penalty.  That may be why things improved when you gave up the AirPort Express.  On the other hand, a newer Express should have been configurable without WDS.
    2) Try configuring the AirPort Extreme to use a 5 GHz channel in the 140s and up.  In the AirPot Utility "Wireless Network Options" panel (in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab) select "Use wide channels".

  • Airport Extreme 5GHz network connection failed

    Hi,
I have a PC, MBP mid-2012, Ipad, HTC One, Samsung S3, and Chromecast. I bought an airport extreme 3 weeks ago, and a Netgear AC usb wifi adapter to my PC. Until two days ago, everything worked fine. I had two networks with different names for the 2,4GHz and the 5GHz. I did i because it was the only way I found to get my gadgets and computers to connect on 5GHz. Otherwise, they all connected in 2.4GHz.
Two days ago, I could no longer connect by MBP nor the PC to the 5GHz network. The MBP sees it, but gives an error when I try to connect. The PC does not even see it. The Ipad and both android phones connect to the 5GHz with no issue.
I already tried to turn on and off the airport express, to disable the dual network and reconfigure it, and to specify a channel for it. No change. Can you please help me to understand what is happening and find a solution?
    Thanks a lot.

I believe it has something to do with securing the network as I'm now running an unsecured network and it not only stays up but it also seems a bit faster. I even ran the Airport Utility via ethernet and got it to "almost" configure but for some reason the setting never got implemented but at least I have internet access in my entire house. I thought it might be interference with some part of the house but it is indeed due to the latest firmware update for the AEB. Which I now call AE"BS". I tried my older Airport Express but I also couldn't get it to configure to now I'm not even sure if its firmware on the AEB or the Airport Utility that is messed up. Going tethered is not an option as I don't want to hunker down in a closet! Go unsecured and it might fix a lot of the issues we are seeing.

  • Airport Extreme, 5Ghz connectivity problems and poor media streaming

    Hi,
I purchased an extreme from the apple store a little over a week ago, and before I send the device back I would like to solicit recommendations from this forum.
    Some information about the setup:
    - Single airport extreme (supplying wifi services for my non-wifi DSL router and a connected USB disk)
    - Airport Extreme Firmware: 7.4.2
    - iTunes: 9.0
    - OS: Snow Leopard (10.6.1), Leopard (10.5.8), Window Vista.
    - Harddrive: 2TB lacie, USB2.0 connection only
    - 2.4 and 5 Ghz broadcasting mode
    - The device is broadcasting on all supported protocols.
    - Multiple clients (various: apple, microsoft, fujitsu)
    - Small space, no major concrete/brick/stone walls, signal strength is 5 bars of goodness
    - Country: Spain (I know there were 5Ghz restrictions here a while ago, but the device broadcasts on 5Ghz and is therefore not crippled).
If anything else could be of use, let me know and I'll update this list.
    And now the problems:
    1) 5Ghz connections fail
When connecting over the 5Ghz freq my connectivity to the extreme and the services it is offering (internet, disk sharing) is intermittent, at best. Basically, it has not worked reliably since I took it out of the box. This is equal for both of my macbooks and a fujitsu laptop (all with n support).
I've tried switching channels to avoid congestion - I don't live in a wifi-heavy area, and there are no other likely sources of interference (e.g. microwaves, cordless phones).
My connections to mounted disks come and go, I have to re-authenticate, and so on.
A general scan of the environment with KisMac does not show any major interference from other wifi networks (only 2 others in range, one is wimax).
I've tried to do some wifi analysis to see if I can spot any frame/packet related issues. Some rudimentary analysis indicates that when the connection stops working on the 5Ghz channel my laptop continually sends request-to-send packets to the extreme, but does not receive a clear-to-send. This occurs after a-few-seconds to a-couple-of-minutes of connectivity - the connection initially 'works' (i.e. wifi packets are sent/received correctly and I can access the internet).
    2) Data access and media streaming from the connected USB drive is very poor
I've mostly had problems with itunes. I thought this might be related to the size of my library, but this shouldn't effect single track playing. Even enabling large buffering in itunes results in intermittent pauses and long track loading.
Note: this occurs over b/g connections; as stated already, n connections don't work. iTunes simply goes into a coma for while and then eventually fails. See above. Also, if I just stream from my macbook (i.e. HD connected via USB), it works flawlessly.
The extreme was running 7.4.2 - updated on first connection. It's now running 7.4.1, as I read on the forums that there were some perceived problems with 7.4.2 (although these perceptions may not be accurate.
    Concl(f)usion:
I believe I've ruled out the following:
    - Distance
    - Interference
    - Laptop related issues (the same problem occurs with 2 macbooks and a fujitsu laptop).
    - Latest firmware
    - Software (apps, OS, etc)
Which leaves me to ponder two possibilities:
    a) The extreme is damaged.
    b) The extreme is not a good product (surely this can't be so?!)
There is, of course, a c-possibility ... that the collective experience of the online community might be able to offer me an alternative path?
I would be very grateful if anyone could offer any suggestions, tips, tricks, spells or simply a hug before I contact apple to begin the process of explaining the issues and seeking some care.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Dave.

I have had the same problem. Really frusrtating, expecially since the reason I bought the airport was because of all the wireless congestion in my neigborhood with only 11 channels on the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
Bought my airport dual band about a week ago. It had the firware 7.4.2. After extensive searching, I found other with similar issues. Apparently the last stable firmware may be 7.3.8. I am on 7.4.0 and not having any issues any longer (only testing one day now).
This may solve your issue. Login to your airport and choose manual setup. on the summary page, find 'Version' 7.x" and click on the word 'version'. This will allow you to rollback your firmware. I went with 7.4. Depending on what options you need with airdisk, Time Capsule, rolling back may remove those options, so experiment. You can always go back to 7.4.1 or 7.4.2 from within the interface.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport Extreme/Time Capsule not working after downloading 7.6

Downloaded airport 7.6 last night and now time capsule/airport extreme doesn't work.  I can't even reset the tc to factory default settings.  Not sure what to do now.

Hi, today I got the same problem after 7.6 update for my Time Capsule. I tried to downgrade to 7.5.2, but afterwards the problem was not solved. Then I tried to set fixed channnels - and it works! For 2.4 Ghz I used channel 12 and for 5Ghz channel 48. Beforehand I used "automatic" for both. Hope it works for you too. I don't know, how Apple's test team spend the whole day ;-)

  • Is it possible to set up a network with airport extreme that is not on the internet

Is it possible to set up a home network using airport extreme that will be a non-internet option?  Not connected to the internet wifi.

Is it possible to set up a home network using airport extreme that will be a non-internet option?
    Yes
Not connected to the internet wifi.
If the AirPort Exteme is not connected to the Internet, then Internet connections will not be available on wireless or wired connections.
