All app windows randomly flash in global repaint

As with many Swing apps I've used, the windows in my app are possessed with some impulse to convulsively repaint their entire contents at random times. This seems to happen most often when a significant paint task is dispatched in one of the windows. The convulsive repaint occurs in all of the app's visible windows, even where a window's contents have not changed in any way. The worst case is when I drag a scrollbar quickly -- it's as if the paint manager is suddenly bewildered by the mouse activity, and dispatches the insidious "paint gray" event to all windows, followed by the normal paint routine in all windows.
I'm very tired of watching my windows flash gray, then casually roll down their buffered contents. Somebody please help!
1) Is there any way to prevent Swing from painting my window gray before invoking the usual painting of contents? I never ever ever want to see my window turn plain gray. Never!
2) Or, can I control the repaint event, so that it is restricted to invocation on windows whose contents have changed? I see no reason to repaint window A in response to a scroll event somewhere in window B. ...it's times like this I wonder if Swing is secretly the result of a high school outreach program.
Many thanks for your help!

Part of what causes this is the vast size that even a simple java program takes up in memory due to the size of the JRE.

There is no want to prevent this from ever happening, but you can make it occur less often by
1. Doing all of your painting to ImageBuffers and just drawing those in your paint method(s)
2. Setting an upper limit to Java's memory that is conservative and automatically restarting it when you get an OutOfMemoryError

  • Why can't I double-click to minimize all App windows to the Dock in Yosemite?

I am running the Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D131). I have checked the Dock preference 'Double-click a window's title bar to minimize', but not all App windows will actually minimize to the Dock - why? Apple Apps should behave consistently.
    These apps behave as expected:
    Safari
    Mail
    Terminal
    Preview
    Pages
    Messages
    FaceTime
    App Store
    iBooks
    TextEdit
    Terminal
These apps DO NOT behave as expected:
    Reminders
    Notes
    Calculator
    iTunes
    Contacts

Not a feature. In fact, there's no way, using just Illustrator, to extract embedded images. But then, it's only at version THIRTEEN! I save a PDF using no downsampling or compression, then open in Photoshop. When you open a PDF in Photoshop you are given the option to rasterize any pages or extract images embedded in the PDF. Choose Images then select the images you want. Save as TIF or PSD and re-link in Illustrator.
    Yes, it is stupid.

  • ITunes Re-Installing All Apps at Random?

Does anybody know why occasionally iTunes decides to re-install ALL applications in my library back onto my iPad & re-order everything even after I have manually unchecked them in the app layout settings months ago and have sync'd countless times prior to it randomly deciding to do this?
It just happened again and its beginning to make me angry at this point. I have around 200 applications, and around 75 of those are on my iPad. Every once in a while iTunes seems to forget this and randomly scrambles up all my apps and re-installs them all.
I end up having to painstakingly re-remove the 100+ apps I DON'T want on my iPad then painstakingly attempt to re-order the 75 apps I do want back into the order I had them previously...

Well, interestingly enough now my iPad is behaving as my iPhone has for some time now...
As of just now I can no longer sync it though a hub, as when I try to my computer locks up then comes up with the error indicating the disk has been disconnected.
I'm guessing at this point my only option is to erase all data in my iPad... Being I can't restore the data for the various apps I'll loose hours and hours worth of work...
I would have though Apple would have fixed this data corruption problem by now... I guess there's no money in going back to fix things that have already been sold...

  • Bring All App Windows to Front Setting (?!)

Please tell me I changed a setting somewhere and this can be fixed.
If I have twenty windows open - and I want to get back into my two pages documents - what is supposed to happen when I click on the Pages app icon in the dock?
The only information I know at the moment is that I /know/ Pages is open because I see the little spotlight under it in the dock. I can also see the TOOLBAR PULLDOWNS for Pages.
HOWEVER, there are no minimized icons on the right hand side of my dock for these OPEN DOCUMENTS. Which I understand because they are not minimized I guess...
Is this a problem in terms of how the OS is set up? Is there a setting somewhere that will clear it up?
Why don't my two open documents automatically pop to the front? And how on God's Green Earth am I supposed to know they are there if they don't identify themselves somehow?
Thanks for anything constructive on this.

AFAIK, when you click on the window's yellow minimize button, the minimized window reverts to a Dock icon. I use Unsanity/s WindowShade X prefpane, which changes the app's Window->Minimize behavior. You'll just have to experiment.

  • How can I script a Flash .exe file to always stay on top of all other windows?

    Hi All,
I'm new to action script, and I just need this one script
    > How can I script a Flash .exe file to always stay on top of

Basically what i want to do is have a flash-created
step-by-step instructional movie, but for the movie to remain on
top of all windows so the instructee is able to follow the
    instructions on-screen...
It would be preferable to not have to buy another product

  • When I have all Firefox windows minimized, and am using another program or am idle, the Firefox windows keeping randomly popping up. How can I stop this behaviour?

I'm running Windows 7 and Firefox 6.0.2. When I have all Firefox windows minimized and am working in another program, the Firefox windows just randomly open in front of my other app and interrupt me. I have to minimize them again. It is extremely distracting and annoying, and often interrupts in the middle of something important. How can I stop Firefox from doing this?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • How can I get Expose to show only and all active windows, regardless of app

Sometimes I have two applications running with several finder windows hidden on the dock. I'd like to know how I can (or if I can) get Expose to show only the Active windows - not the ones on the dock. With this new upgrade, it seems that all open windows that are on the dock appear in a row at the bottom of the screen, which takes up real estate - can I turn that function off so just the open, undocked windows of all apps show?

Sounds like you opened a message in a new window. Have you tried closing that window and see what happens?
If that is not it maybe you can post a screen shot of what you are seeing.

  • 10.5.3 Update- Window redraw problems in Finder and all Apps

Hallo there. After installing the update on my MacBook Pro 2.4GHz I am getting irritating redraw problems in all Apps with scrolling possibilities incl. the Finder. Especially Safari. Triple stuttered lines make it impossible to read anything.
On top of that the permissions are cocked up. The System is telling me not to transfer an iWEB website to a USB stick cos I don't have the privileges. Virtual Sick just splattered over my screen.
This ultra expensive machine only has its justification because it is a tool and I want to WORK with it. Not long and this bean-can is flying out the window.
This is an ultimate pain. I wish the updates would work. It's just so unprofessional. So "Windows". I wish Atari was still building computers.
Is anyone out there that knows anything about this?
    Would appreciate any help.
    Thank you.

  • Itunes crash during update all apps or even a few apps at a time in windows

My itunes crashes when I click "update all apps" or even when I just update manually a few apps at a time.  Its not related to the version of itunes it seems the issue has occured during the passed few versions.  I've tried logging off the store account and relogging in.  I've reinstalled itunes.  I've uninstalled all apple programs from the pc and itunes and reinstalled everything fresh. I've deleted the library files and let itunes create new ones and the issue still persists. Any ideas?

  • Many apps are just flashing (not all third-party ones, though)

    Hello,
I know this is the umpteenth post about this issue, but I have tried all tricks I've read before going for a full restore and I'm wondering if some other trick might be known to the community.
First, the well-known issue is the following: some apps, when executed, cause only a brief "flash" on the iPad's screen, and then the desktop is shown again. The "flashing" app appears nevertheless in the bar with all running apps, but nothing changes if I hit the minus sign to "quit" the app. If I then restart the app, it's flashing again and I'm back to square one. Moreover, also opening the app from the bar with all running apps causes the same behaviour.
In the past I've already faced the most common version of this problem, where all third-party apps would exhibit this behaviour and only Apple's apps where working. In those cases, either the "get a free app" trick or the "sign out/sign in" trick with the Apple Store solved the issue. Now, nothing seems to solve the issue and, moreover, in this case several third-party apps work as expected. Nevertheless, at first sight it seems that roughly half of all third-party apps don't work, it's not just some isolated app. Please note that some of those apps work perfectly on the iPhone 4S with the same OS version, so I tend to rule out a compatibility issue with the OS, also because some apps were still working on the same iPad after updating to 5.1.
Here's the list of operations I've performed, to no avail:
Quitting all apps and restarting the failing ones
Installing a new app from the iTunes Store on the iPad, entering the iTunes Store password
Signing out from the Apple Store on the iPad, and then signing back in
Removed one of the failing apps from the iPad, resynched, added back the app to the iPad from iTunes, resynched.
Switching down the iPad and restarting it
Forcing a restart of the iPad by keeping both buttons pressed
Is there any other reasonable procedure to be attempted before going for a complete backup/reset/restore of the iPad?
    Thanks and best regards,
    Giovanni

Just an update, in order to collect more feedback about this issue.
I have added three further attempts at a solution:
    Resetting all settings
Removing iCloud from the iPad (there's a user here in the community quite vocal about problems with iCloud)
Restoring the iPad using the latest backup
After the last move, which was what I meant to avoid but then I had apparently no other options, the problem got worse. Now all third-party apps, and even Apple's iWork touch apps, crash suddenly, even those that worked before the restore operation. I was hoping that such a condition was the well-known problem solved with any new download from the App Store, but that's not the case, unfortunately.
I'm then going to reset the iPad and restart from scratch. It's a waste of time, but hopefully less painful than keeping on chasing a solution for my weird issue.
If anyone has actually solved this kind of problem, please add your reply here.
    Thanks and best regards,
    Giovanni

  • All apps expired after upgrading to Windows 10

I have a Lenovo Y40 running that was running Windows 8.1 with the user account linked to a Microsoft Account. I upgraded to Windows 10. After upgrading the search bar did not work (nothing could be typed into it), action center would not start, and all apps (e.g. Edge browser, settings etc.) failed to open with the message "Your trial period for this app has expired....". I checked PC info (using the old fashioned my computer -> properties way) and It says Windows is activated so this is not an activation problem. Has anyone else encountered this and have a workaround. Thanks!

The upgrade came through the standard sign up program via the windows icon that appeared on the task bar a few weeks ago after a windows update. There was a notification that the windows update had been downloaded and was ready to be installed so I installed it. Note, the exact same process worked flawlessly on my wifes Surface 3.

  • "Gather windows" for all apps?

How do I move all apps from a Secondary Desktop that I can't see to my Primary Desktop that I can see? This is something that I end up faced with at least once a week and its incredibly frustrating.
This is a problem on any version of OSX without Spaces. Mavericks, Yosemite, and anything else lacking Spaces is a problem.
I am hooked to a Projector for a meeting and I can't see my Secondary Desktop.
I need to change settings, for example the background image needs to be changed, but I can't see the Secondary Desktop background controls and so I can't change anything.
In Windows there is an option to "Move" an open window using the arrow keys. You can recover -any- window that you can't see.
Is there anything like this in Yosemite?
I used to use Spaces for this but the new Mission Control is horrid and doesn't come close to what Spaces used to offer.
I need to "simply" move a window from my Secondary Desktop to my Primary Desktop without being able to see the Secondary Desktop...
This is a huge issue for me. I am left frustrate and wanting to throw my Mac into the river almost once a week because of this issue...
    please someone help me!!

    Hi Brian,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're having a frustrating experience with Spaces in Yosemite. There are a few options that may help with this behavior.
First, make sure your displays are set up as separate Spaces in the Mission Control pane of System Preferences:
    Displays have separate Spaces
If you use the Spaces feature and have multiple displays, you can set up separate spaces for each display.
    From:
OS X Yosemite: Mission Control preferences
Then, if you want to move an application window from one space to another, try one of these options:
    Assign apps to spaces
If you assign an app to a particular space, it opens in that space by default.
Press and hold an app’s icon in the Dock. You may have to first open the app from Launchpad to see its icon in the Dock.
From the shortcut menu that appears, do one of the following:
Have the app open in the current space: Choose Options > This Desktop.
The app appears only in that space. However, if you open the app in full screen, it appears in its own space.
Have the app open in the current space on a specific display: Choose Options > Desktop on Display [number].
Have the app open in every space: Choose Options > All Desktops.
The app appears in every space.
Have the app open in whichever space you’re using at the time: Choose Options > None.
In Mission Control preferences, you can also specify that, when you switch to an app, your desktop should switch to a space with open windows for that app. To open Mission Control preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Mission Control.
    From:
OS X Yosemite: Work in multiple spaces
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy
