All of a sudden...intermittent "negotiating PPPoE"....

I've had a successful Airport Express network working for years with my Earthlink DSL connection. Never had a problem till about two weeks ago.
Now, about 5 times a day or more, my internet connection goes down; by "down" I mean, I stay fully connected to the Airport (4 bars) and my DSL modem lights don't change, but I go offline (no web, mail, VoIP, chat, etc...all are in offline status) for about 30 seconds while "Looking for PPPoE...Negotiating PPPoE....." scrolls through the Airport menu bar icon. Then, suddenly, I'm reconnected. The same behavior can be seen on all three macs connected to the express.
This wouldn't be a big deal except I'm a big VoIP and chat user, and of course this disconnects my VoIP call.
The question is: Is this my Express fritzing out? Or my DSL Modem fritzing out? Or my ISP just being flaky and having trouble keeping me connected?
I would gladly change ISPs if it would help, or, if I need a new express, I'd do that.
Thanks!
Dan

Hi, I live overseas and use DSL to connect my Airport Extreme. Back in the US I always used a cable modem so this wasn't ever a problem. It still happens occasionally but I have learned it has something to do with the way the DSL modem connects to the Airport (at first I was afraid my Airport was dying). I found this site: http://macosx.com/forums/archive/t-255133.html - which seemed to reference the same problem. Scroll all the way to the bottom - this is essentially the problem I have. You'll have to talk to your ISP to make sure the modem is in bridge mode. Right now the problem just occurs intermittently for me so I just kick the power off on the modem and Airport, wait a few seconds, kick it back on, and it usually responds okay after that.
Can't wait til I can go back to cable modem.
Hope this helps.

  • All of a sudden - Looking for PPPoE Host

Setup: I am connecting to the internet via Airport Express, through an ISP provided modem. I am using PPPoE as the protocol for connecting to my ISP.
Problem: The setup was working perfectly for me, when all of a sudden 5 days back, I got the ticker message on my taskbar "Looking for PPPoE host". I went through all the configurations using the airport admin and assistant utility. However, if I connect to the ISP provided modem through the ethernet cable using PPPoE, everything works perfectly. I have been tinkering with this for the past four days, and I have no clue as to what is wrong. For some unknown reason, the airport express base station cannot connect to the ISP (all of a sudden). Please help.

    Hi,
I just got a brand new loaner Airport Express from a Friend. It came with the new Firmware and I used it on my ADSL Connection. (Modem to AE).
Then, one morning, I wake up and connnect my PowerBook to the system. It works fine. I leave for office, return with my Office laptop and install the Airpot Stuff on that too, to connect. Anyway long story short. All works well.
Now morning arrives again, and nothing working at all. I keep getting the "Looking for PPPoE " message and I know it got nothing to do with my new laptop as I have directly plugged my PB to the modem and it dials/connect without a porblem.
I checked the setting in the AE panel and thats fine too. I don;t know whats wrong or what to do. I've temporarely switched back to my NetGear Router until I can find out whats wrong with the AE.
Can you tell me how it's been for you? Were you able to solve the problem?

i use itunes to play music through my airport express but sometimes the songs cut out sporatically.  a song will be playing along then all of a sudden there is intermittant music and silence. What could be causing this?

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

  • Airport 4.2 update...no internet (negotiating PPPoE...)

since i've run all the latest updates for both my OS (10.4.2 tiger) and airport 4.2 i can no longer get on the internet via my wireless airport connection. I have to connect via ethernet cable. i just keep getting the error negotiating PPPoE... scrolling across my status bar. i have a full signal and occasionally after a reset it will connect for a short period.
someone please help. seems a few people have had this problem has anyone managed to find a solution? i need to work!!

OK, to get my assumptions clear, it seems that airport-4.2 includes a firmware-6.2 for the Airport Extreme, and probably the same version for the Express.
Moving the Extreme to 6.2 renders it unable to do PPPoE. Probably the same with the express. Downgrading to firmware-6.1.1 seems to resolve this, but you have to remember to NEVER let it upgrade back to 6.2, or keep the 6.1.1 firmware around so you can downgrade again.
Failing this, some of you guys need to take your gear into an Apple store, or call a support line. This problem needs to be made more visible by people whose paycheck comes from Apple. I don't mean make a nuisance of yourselves, but ask whether the person will file some sort of bugreport, or service request. Make it officially known, and be nice to the poor employee
This problem has to be made visible; I doubt Apple browses these forums to look for bugs, and this seems to be a real problem.
I'm in China; I cannot stand in an Apple store. I don't speak Chinese.

  • Negotiating PPPoE message

Our Airport Extreme N router has been chugging along fine for about 4 months, when today I started experiencing problems. In my Airport menubar status, it kept saying "Negotiating PPPoE..." then going away, then going right back to that message. I was unable to browse the net or get any internet connection.
So I called ATT, our service provider, who walked me through trouble-shooting the modem. After about an hour of this, we had the modem working correctly and hooked the router back up again, only to get the same error. I should add that in the process I switched between an old Alcatel DSL modem and a newer Motorola DSL Modem. Both experienced the same problem. Eventually ATT said the problem must be in the router configuration, and offered to fix it for me for $50.
Since the Airport Extreme is only a few months old, I decided to go to Apple for support, so I'm want to know if anyone has experienced this problem and whether there is a fix.
I repeat that the one modem and Airport were working well together until this morning, and they did work fine until I got that error. I don't see how my configuration could have changed while I was working online. There was no power outage or any other problem when the error occurred.
The modem is set to bridging mode, and the Airport was set to log in with the correct user name and password (though getting it to reset the password was a challenge, since it kept negotiating the pppoe connection and refreshing the password screen in Airport Setup Utility).
The big question is: do I need to send the Airport Extreme in for servicing or is there something I may be able to change or at least check out before I do. (At the moment, I have reconfigured my network using an old Linksys router and an Airport Express for wireless and print serving, so I have a little time to figure this out. The Linksys is old and showing its teeth -- it's been a little flaky in the past, which is one reason I upgraded to the Airport Extreme.)
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Welcome to the forum!
I'm a big fan of resetting in situations like this. Who knows what boxes you've ticked where...
Use the hard reset button with a paper clip on your Airport express. Hold it til the light starts blinking, then let it reset.
While it's resetting, go into your Network prefs and make sure you're set up to connect via Airport. Delete any references to your prior wireless network in the preferred networks section. Go into your keychain utility and delete any passwords there. (this is assuming you were using some form of wireless security).
After your AE has restarted, choose it from the Airport pull-down menu and run the Airport Setup Assistant utility. Once you've got it up and running, use Airport Admin utility to set security and passwords.
Seems drastic, but after all the poking around you've done, these steps should be pretty simple to perform. I'm guessing your original "Looking for PPPoE host" was a temporary problem with your IP. Maybe the ethernet cable was unplugged from AE?
    Good luck

  • Really slow broadband all of a sudden.

Chatted to a bloke from BT both through the online chat and again on the phone about this issue and he said he would change some settings his end to try and increase our broadband speed. The broadband used to be fine, could stream videos just fine, browse the internet without any issues then all of a sudden the speed has dropped to below 1mbps (582kbps using the speedtester.bt.com).
The speedtester itself said that an "acceptable" speed should be between 600kb-7.5mbps. Frankly that is a bit of a joke as 600kbps is near enough where it is currently and even the 3G signal my iPhone is getting here loads web pages faster.
Just to reiterate, the speed was fine up until about 4-5 days ago.

    Please Help!!!

After no luck whatsoever with the people on the online chat help system and after 3 calls to the customer help number I have finally been told that there is nothing wrong with my houses wiring, router etc etc. But the problem seems to lie (after the fourth line test in as many days) on the line between my house and the exchange!!!
How is it the other people that conducted line tests couldn't see that or did they not both and just spout some BS at me as they couldn't be bothered to actually get to the bottom of this issue?! Perplexes me how the first 3 line tests I was kept on the line whilst they carried out the test but on the fourth time of asking I was told that whilst a line test was underway I should not use the landline at all...
Pretty shoddy customer service to me from the first bunch of people I spoke to. Not happy.
Now I have been told that I will have to wait another 2-3 days until and engineer examines the line and possibly even longer after that until the problem gets fixed and its been broken for over a week now!! What are we BT customers actually paying for?!

  • Printer Paused Errors all of the sudden

I network to a printer both at home and at work and have had no problems whatsoever until today -- and now I have problems with both. The method of connecting is completely different: at work I connect to the network via an ethernet cable, as does the printer (i.e. it is a true network printer). At home, the printer is connected to an old eMac which shares its connection over the WiFi network. Oh yes, two utterly different printers - A Dell 5200 at work and an old Epson Stylus CX3200 at home.
My problem is that the printer immediately pauses when a print job is set. If I restart the printer and the job, I get a client-error-not-possible message. I try again and I get an error message from CUPS: usr/libexec/cups/backend/mdns failed
I have reset the printing system multiple times and tried to add the (home) printer again (via bonjour) but get the same error results. I will try tomorrow at work but am expecting the same frustrations.
My wife can still print fine at home from her old iBook on 10.4.11 over the network.
Why would I have problems all of the sudden like this? The only thing I changed is, like an obedient little monkey, I installed the newest Security Update that Software Update told me to install. Could this have screwed something up? Any help would be much appreciated, this is very frustrating.

Well, I've figured out a provisional work around, at least at home (will try the office printer in a bit). If, instead of connecting via bonjour as I did until yesterday, I connect via Line Printer Daemon and type in the afp of the desktop to which the printer is connected, it does work. But I have to choose "Generic Postscript Printer" under driver -- I am guessing that this is because the Power PPC (running 10.4) to which the printer is connected does not recognize the Gutenprint driver for the Stylus CX3200 which would be the natural choice from my MacBook. (If I select this driver and print, my computer thinks the printing has been successful, but nothing actually prints.)
By contrast, on Bonjour, it automatically selects the older, PPC driver that is already installed on the desktop computer connected to the printer. But this driver is apparently not an option from my MacBook using 10.5.6 when using LPD.
At any rate, this seems to work for now, but I still suspect that the Software Updates I installed yesterday screwed up the way in which my computer communicates with other devices on a local network: I have also had intermittent "connection failures" when I try to connect to a shared device via its icon on the sidebar in Finder.
I would still be very grateful for any thoughts on why I was getting the "Printer Paused" error (and, of course, I still don't know for certain that I'm going to be able to figure out a similar work around for my office network printer).

  • Logic 9 - Memory Overload - Out of the blue / all of a sudden

I have been working with Logic Pro for about 4 years on a circa 2007 iMac (2 Core, 2GB RAM), 10.9.4 - and have produced about 30 projects - ranging in total number of tracks from 12-36; medium use of plug ins and always Bus Space Designer.
I would get the Overload Message intermittently over the years, but could solve that by closing anything else running on the machine, restart Logic and be back in the game.  Everything seemed to work very well for years.  I have not made any changes to the set up, either Logic or the machine, apart from latest software updates, etc.  When I started Logic today, I can't even play a project; I have tried to Play several projects, some with very few tracks, some with heavier tracks; both crash after about 15 seconds of play.
I have run Clean My Mac2, emptied the trash, etc.  I realize that my RAM is very low, but I can't work out why this has happened all of a sudden.  Any advise?
    Thanks.

    Hi John,
    1) Dont use anything.. OS X can take care of itself...
    2) It's Firefox.. As you have found out it can really hog resources....I would suggest you uninstall it and use Safari...  unless you have a really good reason not to do so...
2a) What is Escrow Security Alert.app?  (Its part of Mavericks/Keychain and its not using any real resources of note so no worries..)
    3) Ok.. so it's a System Overload and thats likely being caused by Firefox as others have reported....
    4) Growl is a program that puts msgs being reported by other apps, up onto your screen. Not really needed these days thanks to OS X's own notification system...
    http://growl.info
    http://growl.info/documentation/growl-package-removal.php
    5) Absolutely yes... Personally I'd add more if you can....(I think your Mac might actually take 6GB...) Check with OWC to find out for sure... as Apple often state low minimums for memory when the hardware can support more than is officially listed..
    https://www.macsales.com
...as the more memory, the better the system operates I've found.... 2GB is the absolute bare minimum when running 10.9 and Logic.. and is going to make your Mac under perform for sure... Make sure you are running Logic Pro 9 in 64bit mode to make use of the extra memory above 4GB...
Crucial is fine for memory.. so long as it is the exact correct type for your Mac Model...
Final tip: Make sure nothing is running in the background when running Logic.. Quit all other apps.... including any apps that launch on startup....as your Mac is unpowered as it is for use with modern OS X versions.. (The modern OS X versions make much higher demands on the hardware.. which is why many of us using older Macs.. use Snow Leopard along with Logic Pro 9 whenever possible) so ensure you provide all the CPU/Memory resources you can when running Logic...
    Cheers..
    Nigel

  • I have files that have been on my computer for over a year and all of a sudden they wont open and an error message comes up saying they were improperly downloaded or came in an email attach which is not the case

I have files that have been on my computer for over a year and I have used them several times and all of a sudden they wont open.  I received an error message saying they are improperly downloaded or came as an email attachement which is not the case.  Please advise

They seem to be word files - they will open if I choose "open with" microsoft word, but if I double click they don't open they are appearing as PDF on my screen.  I even opened one and then tried to "save as" making sure I chose .doc and they still appear as PDF
I just created a new document response.doc in word and when I saved to my desktop it appears as a PDF file and I absolutely did not create a PDF or save as PDF it was a simple word
    doc.
The message says "Adobe reader could not open response.doc because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example attached in an email and not properly decoded)
The reader version is I believe the most current, I always update when prompted.  OS is Windows 8

  • Help! I am making an iPhoto book and all of a sudden it will not open and I get a huge error message which is supposedly sent to Apple.  How do I access that site????

    Mac osX 10.6.8
    iBook - old version
can not access Safari - going through Chrome
All of a sudden my IBook would not open (100 pages and almost finished)
Error message sent to Apple - how do I access them??????
Thank you for any help you can give me
    <Email Edited by Host>

Do you mean, you have been creating a Photo Book in iPhoto? Or an iBook in iBook Author?
If you are asking about a photo book in iPhoto, what was the last you did in iPhoto, before the crash happened?  Did you add a page with a map?
Then you may have a problem with a bug, where adding a route to a map may render the book unreadable.  In that case the best option is to restore the iPhoto library from the last backup you made, before you added the map to the book.
It is not possible to open the book and to delete the unreadable page. You can only delete the book and start over, if this bug is the reason for the crashes. See for example this link:  Getting rid of problem photo book

  • My time capsule all of a sudden disconnected from the wireless system and can no longer be fund by my MacBook Pro. The little lamp on the the capsules has turned off, but it still makes a noice inside,

My Time capsule did a backup yesterday in the morning without any problem. All of a sudden, it disconnected from the wireles system last night and the little indicator lamp turned off. It still makes a noice, as if a disc was turning inside. The Time Capsule was bought last year in June. Any suggestiom what to do? What happens if I press the little buttom (reset?), will I loose af my backup?

Do a reset.. power off the TC..
Hold in reset and power on.. keep holding in reset until it flashes rapidly.. if it turns on at all.
If you bought it in June.. take it back today.. it is broken.. at a guess.
Some Gen4 are failing this way.. get Apple to replace it.. even if it is a few days out of warranty it won't be much.

  • All of a sudden I can no longer toggle or clip angles in multiclip sequence

    Hi,
I've got a project with a number of sequences, videos, angles, etc and all of a sudden I can no longer toggle between angles in the sequence timeline. It was working last night and then stopped and it's still unresponsive. Every time I click to switch an angle or cut to an angle I get the alert beep.
I am not out of disk space and haven't changed any settings as far as I am aware of.
    Thanks

Not sure what the deal is...have you added any new software or upgraded/updated anything since this started?
Have you tried opening an autosave version, to see if it works there?
    Trashed prefs, run disk utility?
I'm not sure I've ever heard an 'alert beep', so would wonder if the drive is failing.
Can you be a little more explicit about exactly how it 'stopped working'...were you right in the middle of working on it, or had you stepped away for a bit?
Have you tried shutting down, then rebooting after 15-20 minutes?

not sure where you got the idea that I have

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600a all of a sudden is not recognized by only my computer in the house

Hi, I have 4 laptops in my house. We have all been connected wirelessly to my HP printer for over a year. All of a sudden, for some reason, my computer no longer sees the printer. I have an ASUS. I run Windows 7 with Windows Firewall. My router is a 3 month old Linksys EA3500. I can print from every other printer in the house, and I can also print from my Android Phone. However, when I try to print from my laptop, it now says that it is detecting printer has been turned off.  I have done everything I can think of to fix this. The only changes I recently made were installing Webroot AV program. I can't be 100% certain, but i'm pretty sure I have printed since that installation, and all of the other computers on my network are using Webroot as well with no issues. Hoping for some help. Here's what I've done so far:
Tried troubleshooting printer via computer. It's gone through the spool service check and whatever else the standard troubleshooting does. It said something about my printer being turned off. It definitely was not, but I unplugged and restarted just to be sure. No fix.
Noticed IP changed on printer and thought maybe something with static vs dynamic (don't know much about this) so went to "update IP address" on my laptop and updated the info. Checked the router settings info by entering printer's ip in browser. Printer shows connected and ready and all looks good. I pinged the ip and got results. Mac filtering is not enabled so I don't need to deal with that. SSID is not hidden. The 802.11 configuration says that the network type is WPA-PSK with WPA2 and AES selected for encryption. Same as it always has been.
Double checked to make sure printer was recognizable by my firewall. It is on the accepted list.
Last resort: I uninstalled the printer software and deleted the device from my laptop. Attempted reinstall, but when it gets to the part where it's supposed to search for the printer it says unable to find. I enter the IP address from the printer and it still cannot find. I enter the host name and it still can't find. Since I uninstalled everything, I can no longer install the printer at all.
Went to drivers on line and tried using the install via online option. same results. "unable to find printer".
I unpugged the printer from the wall again, this time for over an hour, hoping it would reset but realizing this probabaly isn't the issue  since every other laptop can print in my house.
Tried to connect ethernet cable and install printer that way. Plugged one end into router and other into printer as directed on troubleshooting tips. Ran Disk software and it doesn't install the printer. IP address changes on printer when I use ethernet and I am entering new ip accordingly.
Reset my modem and restarted. Reinitialized my router and then used the software to reconfigure it. did the standard 'wait ten seconds and plug everything back in and reboot computer'. No fix.
Checked my wireless network adapter setting to make sure I have most updated drivers. I do.
Deleted every single thing that relates to my printer in every folder and in regedit.
Tried reinstalling printer both wirelessly and with ethernet. Still unable to find printer either way.
I have changed no settings that I can think of since the printer last worked a few weeks ago. As I said, every other computer prints perfectly. The only thing I can think that's different is that all the oher laptops are running Windows 8 and I'm still on 7, but that didn't matter before, and I can print from the HP print software on my phone.
Please somebody tell me what I'm missing here. I'm going bonkers. Thank you so much to everyone who takes the time to reply on this support forum.

Well you have done quite a bit.  Let's try here if you haven't.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02915280&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc...
Then let's give this a shot.
These settings are for setting up your wireless printer to stay connected to your router, keep wireless devices better connected and makes your router secure and hack proof.
    1. Set a static IP in the printer (click here) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual).
This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers. Verify your DHCP range and change this
first if needed. More Wireless Printing help is here (Windows solution 4, static IP).
    2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the
printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click Settings Tab/Auto Off. Or use the Printer
       Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS).
    3. If the printer supports and has IPv6 enabled, turn off IPv6 in the printer.
    4. If needed and you assigned a static IP address, try using 8.8.8.8 for the Manual DNS server and
         8.8.4.4 preferred DNS server.
In the router: (Refer to your router manual for information)
    5. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1, 6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
    6. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
    7. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
    8. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security. Nobody can hack your
system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
    9. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same,
they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
    10. SSID broadcast must be enabled.
    11. Save all settings. Power off both, wait 2 mins.  Power on router wait 2 mins.
    12. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.
Windows 7/8/8.1   Is Network Discovery on or off?
Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and Sharing Center/Advanced sharing settings.
Under Home or Work (current profile) / Network Discovery.
Select "Turn on network discovery" and save changes.
