Alt-text not carried consistently

I have created alt-text for all my pictures in Adobe Bridge.  I placed them in InDesign, and do see the alt-text from within InDesign
Object / Object Export Options / Alt-Text / source: from XMP: Description
I do see the alt-text I entered in Bridge.
When I export the file to accessible PDF, however, it says there is no alt-text.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Joyce

I'm guessing that when you exported from InDesign, you may have forgotten to check Create Tagged PDF in the Export PDF dialog.
I just tested with a small file I had that has metadata using InDesign CS6. I selected the Alt Text option in Object Export Options as you did:
I turned on Created Tagged PDF when I exported (works with either PDF (Print) or PDF (Interactive). When I opened the PDF in Acrobat, if I paused over the image with the Hand tool, I could see a tooltip (indicating the Alt text).
Or, you can choose the Edit Object tool (Content panel) and select the image. Then right-click on it and select Properties. You'll see it under the Tag tab:

  • Alt text not appearing in WebHelp output

    We are using FrameMaker 10 and RoboHelp 9 to output as WebHelp. In the FM files, I have added alternate text to anchored frames containing images. When I update the linked FM files in my RH project, the screen tip is empty for these images, but when I look at the HTML source for the topic, it shows that the alt text is there:
    <p class="widegraphic"><img alt="Coach completes form and can either submit now or save it as a draft, edit it, and submit it later. After submit, employee receives task or alert notification, and coach receives task notification. Coach can still edit form at this point. Employee acknolwedges form and completes tasks, and employee task changes to complete. Coach completes task, and task status changes to complete. Lastly, coach receives alert or message notification.  "
                                 id="image2" src="using_bpl_form00003.jpg"
                                 style="margin-bottom: 6pt;" border="0" />&#160;</p>
    When I preview the topic in RH and hover my mouse over the image, the alt text appears in the preview window as expected, both in the default window and when I choose to preview in Firefox and IE. However, when I generate the WebHelp and hover my mouse over the images, nothing shows up at all, and the alt text is replaced by the file name:
    <p class="widegraphic"></p>
    <div align="left"><img alt="using_bpl_form00003.jpg" style="margin-bottom : 6pt; " id="image2" src="using_bpl_form00003.jpg" />
    </div>
    If, however, I manually copy and paste the alt text into the screen tip field of the image in the RH topic, the alt text does appear in the WebHelp output:
    <p class="widegraphic"><img alt="Coach completes form and can either submit now or save it as a draft, edit it, and submit it later. After submit, employee receives task or alert notification, and coach receives task notification. Coach can still edit form at this point. Employee acknolwedges form and completes tasks, and employee task changes to complete. Coach completes task, and task status changes to complete. Lastly, coach receives alert or message notification.  "
      id="image2" src="using_bpl_form00003.jpg"
      title="Coach completes form and can either submit now or save it as a draft, edit it, and submit it later. After submit, employee receives task or alert notification, and coach receives task notification. Coach can still edit form at this point. Employee acknolwedges form and completes tasks, and employee task changes to complete. Coach completes task, and task status changes to complete.       style="margin-bottom: 6pt;" border="0" />&#160;</p>
    This seems like a pretty major bug to me. I know there have been scripts developed to delete the alt text so that graphic filename won't show up as the alt text, but is there anything that will take the existing alt text and populate the screen tip/title property with it, which seems to be the key to getting this to work in the output? There's no way I can manually copy and paste all the alt text into the images in RH, especially because I'll just end up having to redo it every time I update the linked FM files.
    Thanks,
    Jackie

    Hi Jackie,
    Offhand, your ALT string seems long. A quick search yielded info at http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/images/images_famsupp_85.html
    If a lengthy description is needed to describe the image, use the LONGDESC attribute to point to the URL of another page which has the lengthy description. Because LONGDESC is not yet sufficiently supported, also follow the image with a "D-link". A D-link is a standard anchor link with contents consisting of the capital letter "D", like this:
    Do you experience the same behavior with short alt strings as well?

  • ALT text not appearing in PDF for EPS files

    Hi,
    I have a created a document in InDesign CS5.5 which has images and text. the document should be accessibility complaint.
    The document has images which are in PSD, tiff, eps and PNG files. I have applied the Alt text for each images.
    After I export the document as PDF, when I mouse over the images, the Alt text is appearing for all the image formats except EPS file format. But Acrobat reads the Alt text for the image.
    I am wondering why the Acrobat is not showing the ALT text for EPS file formats when i mouse over the image.
    Is anyone facing the same problem? should I do anything in the settings?
    please help.
    Regards
    Ramji V K

    The EPS image is not created in photoshop. the image is created in Illustrator.
    Also, what do you mean by Single image? can you please explain a bit more about that?
    Thanks.

  • Img alt="text" not displayed when images are turned off in Safari

    I have tried to search this, but every search has returned too many posts, so I apologize in advance.
    Have I made some error or is there an issue with my Safari? For some reason my Safari does not display alt="text" when images are turned off?
    This is what is supposed to happen (see http://www.w3schools.com/tags/attimgalt.asp) and it works fine in my other browsers (Opera, FF), but with Safari I get nothing - no image, no alt text, no indiciation that an image is supposed to be in that place. According to w3c, Safari is supposed to be compliant.
    There is no problem with the site itself, I am designing the site and test with and without images to see how it degrades. As I said, it works properly in Opera and FF - the alt="text" text is displayed in place of the image - but not in Safari.
    Is this just my Safari? How do I fix this if it is?
    Is it Safari in general? If so, how do we get it fixed, because this is clearly just not correct?

    It's not just you. I see the same thing in my Safari. It appears to be a Safari problem, in which case the best thing to do is submit feedback to Apple's developers via the Mac OS X feedback form. (You will not receive a response, as that page notes, but the feedback will get to the people who can use it.)

  • IWeb 09 Text not Rendering Consistently (text to picture optimization)

    I am using iWeb 09 and finding that custom fonts are not being properly rendered to be output as images or as Apple calls it optimization.
    Under iWeb 06, this worked perfectly. Custom fonts were saved out as image files and retained their design aesthetic. Here's a site I did that does exactly that (www.stuffiputonline.com) The font I used was Eurostile and it all outputs perfectly as image.
    In 09, custom fonts are not being output as images and instead show up as Times Roman, or some other generic web font, when opened on a third party computer. (The site in question is editroom.info and I am using Avant Garde as my header and sub-header font.)
    I have tried turning on the optimization preference to gauge what's happening. However, iWeb's behavior is totally inconsistent. Sometimes the custom fonts show the optimization warning, sometimes they don't.
    I've tried some tricks which I thought would force optimization/image render. I added a tiny shadow to all my custom font text. Okay, great it all showed the optimization warning.
    I open my site on my wife's computer and almost every font that was supposed to be an image is coming up as editable Times Roman text. Clearly, Apple has retained a text information despite showing it as image render inside iWeb.
    Any thoughts. Is this just a 09 3.0 bug?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Add a drop shadow to the font in the Font window and set the opacity to 1 or zero percent as show in this screenshot:
    Click to view full size
    If you already haven't done so go to iWeb's preferences and check this checkbox: Show text imaging indicator. Then you'll get an indication when the text box will be converted to an image file.
    You do know that this will make the site load slower in many browsers, particularly Internet Explorer.

  • Acrobat X Pro:  Accessibility Report says No Alt Text for image but there is

    I have added the alternate text for images on my pdf but the accessibility report is still giving me errors stating that there is no alternate text.  Does anyone have any idea why?  I have checked and the alt text is there.  I don't understand this.
    Thank you.

    I assume when you click on the error it is taking you to the location where the error is.  Not seeing the document it is hard to tell... do you have a multi-page document and when you click on the error does it take you to the location where that problem is?
    There are several things that could cause this problem.  The Figure or other tag that contains the alt text must have content. It cannot be an empty tag.
    It also cannot have another Tag inside of it containing the content.  There must be some actual content directly within the Tag with the alt text, not nested inside another Tag, if that makes any sense.
    Or, there may be another Figure Tag that has no content. That, too, will generate an error.
    If neither of those suggestions work, if you post the file I can probably find the problem.

  • Image title tooltip (not alt text) doesn't work

    There are half a dozen or so existing help requests mentioning alt text or discussing problems with the Google Toolbar add-on, but this is not my issue, so I am opening a separate help ticket.
    If you are here about "alt" text, first read any of the posts explaining that "alt" text isn't supposed to appear, it's just a quirk of IE that it sometimes does, FF4 is correct and does what the standards ask and what other browsers do. You want "title" text. The best explanation seems to be:

    Neither was I. I *did* get them in safe mode, but I did a lot of resetting and mucking about without any luck. In the end, after doing a text diff between safe mode and not, of the Troubleshooting information (in the Help menu), I found that the issue might be Direct2D-related, and changed the flag "gfx.direct2d.disabled" to true in about:config. I now have tooltips back but a less efficient FF4.

  • Alt text for photos not appearing

    Hi,
    I tagged a large document in InDesign (because Acrobat Pro's feature is too unpredictable).
    I assigned alt text to all the photos, but when I hover my cursor over them while viewing the
    exported PDF, only some are showing up.
    It turns out that large photos that I have on chapter divider pages are the only ones
    not showing their alt text, even though they are set up in InDesign structure view the
    same way as all other photos.
    Can anyone think of a reason why this is happening? The only thing I can think of
    that's different about them is that they originally are from a master page. But because
    each photo is unique, they've already been disconnected from the original master page.
    Thanks,
    Jane

    I just figured out that those photos had been set to a blending mode of Multiply
    because an earlier iteration of the design used transparency. But to the eye, they
    look like normal photos, so I didn't realize they were set to Multiply.
    This solved the problem but it's not heartening news. What if my graphic legitimately
    did have a blending mode set? What would my workaround be if I needed to set Alt Text
    for those images?

  • Alt text of image tooltip not showing for some cases

    Hello,
    I have followed the following steps in adding the alt text of images. Adobe Acrobat X Pro * Add alternate text and supplementary information to tags
    However, there is a weird case where the tooltip of the alt text is not shown on hover for a specific page (page 5 of the attached PDF)

    Please advise if there is something wrong with the PDF that is causing Reader to not show the alt text for the images in that certain page. (and if the PDF should be fixed or is Reader the one that has a problem).
    Thanks

  • Alt-text 'tool tip' not appearing on some images

    We get pdf files created by outside sources that we then need to publish on our webpage.  I add tags to the pdf, then add the alt-text to the images via the Touch Up Text tool.  As well as I can determine, the tag for the alt-text is present in the pdf.  The Read Out Loud function in Acrobat reads the alt-text correctly as does a screen reader.  But the 'tool tip' does not appear on all images.  It seems that the more complex, mulitple layered dwg type images do not display the text, either from the browser, or from Acrobat itself.  Other dwg source images do work, and photgraphic images are ok.
    I have gone back through the pdfs to verify the existence of the figure tag, and that the alt-text is there.
    I have opened the tags dialog, looked at the properties, and added the text to the Title field as well as the alt-text and Actual Text.
    I have converted the images to jpgs, which resolves the issue, but greatly reduces the quality of the image.
    I am using Acrobat Pro 8.1.4 on a Windows XP, sp2 system.
    I am aware that the ADA requirement do not require the 'tool-tip' to function, but when you have many, many pages of images in a pdf using a screen reader or the read out loud function to test is not feasible for testing.  We need to have the tool-tip working, and I have run out of ideas on how to make it work.

    I just figured out that those photos had been set to a blending mode of Multiply

  • Alt-text in InDesign

    I am creating a master file in InDesign which will ultimately be published as EPUB and Accessible PDF.
    I watched training videos and learned about the Adobe Bridge.  I entered all my Alt-Text in Bridge.
    When I brought it into InDesign, I can see it in the XML-Description field in InDesign, but when I extract to EPUB or Accessible PDF, the Alt-Text is not carried through.  If I enter Alt-Text in InDesign, it does carry on through.
    Is it something we are doing to the pictures in InDesign that is inhibiting the carry-through of the alt-text from Bridge?  If we use a Frame or resize the picture, does that interfere?
    Thank you much,

  • Copying text from carrier into PO

    I have set up the following process. I linked the standard partner role CR carrier to the vendor master and the purchase order to make carrier determination possible.
    Meaning in my vendor master I added a carrier, meaning when I create a PO for that vendor the carrier will be assigned. Now I have a text on carrier level "shipping instructions" which I would like to see on my PO. But when I create my PO and I check the header text "shipping instruction", the text from the vendor is copied and not the one from the carrier.
    When I check customizing I can define all kind of copying rules but I'm not able to refer or set up a copy ole based on partner roles.
    Is there a way doing this without enhancement?
    Thanks
    Walter Goris

    Thanks for your prompt answer, but the problem is that the carrier text is stored at carrier level which is only assigned with a partner role to the vendor. Creating another text on vendor level isn't a solution as I can have more than 1 carrier for a vendor. During PO creation the correct carrier will be selected from the partner role. at that moment the text from the carrier should be taken over.
    Example: vendor A has carrier X and carrier Y. Carrier X has a text X and carrier Y has a text Y.
    When I create a PO for vendor A when I save the system will bring me a pop-up to choose between carrier X & T. When I select X, the text X should appear on my PO but in my current set up I get the text from vendor A.
    You see a solution for that
    Thanks

  • Adding alt text tags in InDesign (and Acrobat Pro)

    I am having real difficulty adding alternative text tags. I created an INDD doc with rollover buttons linked to URLs firstly in InDesign CS4. I couldn't add alt text tags in CS4 so I then tried to add them in Acrobat X Pro but failed. Acrobat keeps wanting to class the PDF as a form. I then installed InDesign CS6 from the cloud and added alt text to the rollover buttons via object export options. However, these do not show when I export to PDF.
    Can someone help me add alt text to my rollover buttons in my interactive PDF either in InDesign CS6 or in Acrobat Pro after I export it?

    In InDesign CS6, you just need to add descriptions to buttons. This is done in the buttons and forms panel:
    This is the alt text in Acrobat when you roll over the button:

  • Problem with Alt Text output from thumbnail image of Lightbox widget

    I’m having a problem with the Lightbox widget not producing alternative text based on the image properties.  I’ve set ALT text for the image properties on both the larger Ligtbox image as well as the thumbnail.  But the HTML output from Muse does not include the ALT text on the thumbnail version of the image.  Here’s an example:
        <div class="popup_anchor">
           <div class="Thumb popup_element clearfix" id="u4409"><!-- group -->
            <a class="anchor_item grpelem" id="untitled"></a>
            <div class="grpelem" id="u4433"><!-- image -->
             <img id="u4433_img" src="/images/n0060292x292.jpg" alt="" width="292" height="292" />
    This may be a problem that came in a previous release of Muse.  I have a few older examples where ALT text is produced, but it’s no longer updated if I update the Image Properties.

    I'm seeing the same problem. Looks like a bug to me. Any ideas as to how we can get this on Adobe's bug fix list?
