Alternatives to IR frontrow remote

I've got a powerbook g4 and I want to run frontrow via a remote. Since PB's don't have the IR reciever, I was wondering if there was any other remote options available. i've looked into sailing clicker but my phone is not supported. Ideally, I'd like a bluetooth device. I don't really want to use the AirClick due to the USB reciever.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I've never heard of a Bluetooth device like that. I'm not sure you can find one that doesn't require a USB "dongle". There is a USB radio remote for Front Row from Keyspan.

  • How to upgrade to FrontRow/Remote

My Mac Mini (PPC) does not have front row or a built-in infrared receiver.
I would like to use the front row program on my Mac Mini and would like to know what needs to be done.
I assume I need to upgrade to Tiger OS, and see that I can buy a Apple Remote for $30, but I still do not have an infrared receiver on my Mac Mini.
Can I purchase a USB IR receiver from Apple or third party?. would this work with front row? I have seen some reference to front row only working with the "built-in" IR receiver.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   PowerPC

    Hello,
You can only install and use Front Row on a Mac that originally shipped with it (Except for one option).
Likewise, you can only use a remote with Front Row if it came with such an option.
So, if your machine did not come with Front Row or a remote, then your only "Authorized" option is to purchase a newer model that did.
    Now, for the exception:
There is a hack circulating on the Internet. This hack will enable Front Row to run on some other machines. But, it is definitely not supported by Apple, and may be a violation of their license / user agreement.
It has also been previously reported to be problematic and cause some problems with OS X on some machines.
You can get this utility here:
    http://www.andrewescobar.com/frontrow
The author does list a remote that he has found to work on that page as well.
So, the Official answer "Can't be done". The unofficial answer: "It can be made to work with a hack".
Either way, you'll need to explore the legal considerations yourself. The author admits to having been contacted by Apple Legal already.
So, I would say installing Front Row on a machine that did not come with it is "Questionable" at best.
    I hope this helps.

  • FrontRow, Remote, & Wireless Keyboard for Power Mac G5

I have a very simple question. If I upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, I would like to be able to operate Front Row from my couch. My PowerMac G5 did not come with Bluetooth capability, so how do I 1) make my computer operable with the wireless Mac keyboard, and/or 2) how to I make computer operable with the Apple remote?
    Thanks,

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
You need a bluetooth adapter for the keyboard.
For the remote, you need a USB IR receiver.

  • Remote Not Working With QuickTime 7.3.0

Hi I just upgraded and realized my frontrow remote has stopped working with Quicktime. The remote works with VLC, iTunes etc but not QT. Forget about scanning forward or backward it cant even adjust the volume. I never had the problem before. I have tried playing both avi and mp4 files.
I run Tiger and have a macbook

    As a follow up -
I spoke with Apple Support about this and was routed to a few people who were helpful, and moved it up to the engineers of Keynote (and the white remote?) for a solution.
A few days later I received this reply:
Hello Eric, I have heard back from the engineers about this. It looks like as long as Keynote 6.0 is present on the system it will default to using the remove in that application. If you remove Keynote 6.0, which we would not recommend, then you can use Keynote 5.3 with the remote. Presently though this is normal and expected behavior.
I replied by expressing my disappointment that this wasn't functional, since I'm not comfortable using Keynote 6.0 yet.  Short of uninstalling 6.0, the only workaround I have found is to use the iPhone/iTouch Keynote remote app, or make a duplicate copy of your presentation to be opened in 6.0 (and using the remote there).

  • Remote for powerpc mini?

Do apple sell the frontrow remote/reciever as an optional extra for older macs?
i have a powerpc g4 1.5ghz mini and wanted to know if I could get a remote for it.
Originally I didn't think i was missing much by not having it but i recently got a macbook which of course includes frontrow and the remote and i must admit the remote is quite nice for using with itunes so was wandering if they did a remote with a reciever that plugged into the usb or something.

No… they will never do this as a reason to upgrade to a new Mac. Apple marketing would never let them do it.

  • Missing Movies - Frontrow sharing

I've converted a bunch of movies I own to mp4 format and copied them to my itunes library. They all show on the mac I have them locally on via frontrow without a problem. When accessing them via frontrow over wireless though not all of the movies show in the list of the mac thats using frontrow remotely. I've checked there all set to 'movie' in type but still no joy.
    This a known bug?
    Any way around it?

Yes I have tried rebooting iPad 1.
Trouble shooting I have done includes:
    1) Rebooting iPad 1
    2) Rebooting computer hosting iTunes (and by extension iTunes itself)
    3) Deleting/re-entering Home Sharing login/pw on iPad 1

  • PlayBook: Dock with HDMI + Remote Control?

Has anyone a idea, where to buy a dock with hdmi? Always putting cables to the device is so 80s... i want to put it to the dock only.
Does anyone know, if its planet to sell some kind of a remote control for the PlayBook? I read, some guys are using 30 or 40 ft cables to watch videos across the living room... but thats a bad joke! As an alternative to a hardware remote, i would use vnc-server for PB, but thats not available today.
    Any suggestions?

I know it was not your question but you can also use your PlayBook as an XBMC remote control:

  • Controlling video remotely

    Hi all,
My kids each have an iPad4 in the back of the car for long journeys. They're mounted on headrests and superb in every respect bar one.
Our youngest can't reach the screen to change TV shows and the eldest can't reach across to help her ! I've posted this question before and tried installing the Tango app on my iPhone to switch episodes from the front seat but it won't work with proprietary media downloaded from iTunes.
Does anyone know if there's another app out there that will let our iPhones switch iPad media in the back ? Alternatively, would a bluetooth remote be the answer even though bluetooth headphones would already be paired ?
    Thanks in advance,

I'd like to do exactly the same thing. Airtunes has been buggy, at best. As a result, I've connected my old iBook directly to the stereo. VNC is kind of slow to use as a remote control.

  • IPhone / iPod Touch Remote to change Photo Rating?

Is it possible to change a photo's rating in iPhoto using an iPhone / iPod Touch with Apple's "Remote" App (or alternately the little white remote included with an iMac)?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I've never found a way with the little remote included with the iMac, but then again, when you use that you're not in iPhoto, but in a programme called Front Row.

  • PERFORMANCE while accessing remote database DB2 on AS/400 using WAS

Subject: PERFORMANCE while accessing remote database
We have IBMWebSphere Application Server Standard Edition 3.5.3 running on
    AS/400 iSeries Server (V4R5, test)and local DB2 Database.
I am using AS/400 Developer Kit for Java JDBC Driver(type2, com.ibm.db2.jdbc.app.DB2Driver)
to talk to local database. The performance was very good.
When I try to access remote database (every thing same as local) which is on another AS/400
machine of V4R4 (we use it for production, remote database) using IBM Toolbox for Java JDBC driver
(com.ibm.as400.access.AS400JDBCDriver, type 4 driver), I can see 30to40%decrease in performance.
Here we have WAS on previous V4R5 AS/400 machine.
    My questions are
Is the performance decrease is due to
    1. the driver I am using? if it is Is there any other alternative drivers to access
    remote database to boost performance?
    2. the release difference of local(V4R5) and remote data base(V4R5)
    3. Currently most uses remote database while we do this testing. Is that the cause?
or Is there any other cause or Drivers etc??? Suggestions and help is most welcome.
    Thank you.

    What about
    4. the data has to travel across the network.

  • - Help! Odd PHP behavior on local computer...

Can anyone tell me why I can no longer open PHP pages on my
    computer?
I can't even F12-preview like I could last week... it just
    jams when it
should be opening IE and displaying the page.
So I try using windows explorer to open the page manually...
    and notice
there's no association for PHP files anymore. No cute little
    icons.
Naturally, it asks me what I want to open this file with. I
    say IE... and it
jams again, like it does in the F12 preview.
I try again, this time selecting Firefox. Firefox opens,
    displays nothing,
and windows asks me again what I want to open this file with.
    I pick Firefox
again... same thing. Infinite loop... it doesn't jam or
    anything, it just
keeps asking me what I want to open it with when I choose
    Firefox.
Dreamweaver opens and reads the file with no problem. I just
    can't view it
    in any of the browsers.
It's a fully functional HTML page with body tag and
    everything... only two
includes are used, which is why it's a .php.
Renaming it .HTM works. It'll open (though obviously, without
    the includes).
Why is my system suddenly having such a hard time with PHP
    when it never has
before? Is this another one of those lawsuits Microsoft lost
    or something?
The only thing that changes on my system since this was
    working fine are the
various security patches Microsoft makes us download.
    Help?
PS: Once uploaded and viewed through the HTTP address,
    neither browser has
any problem viewing the PHP file. How weird is that? It just
    won't open it
    locally.

You can assure all you want but if you are not using a
    testing server, this
is clearly impossible. PHP code cannot be executed without a
    testing
server. I think if you look more closely you'll find that
    either -
    * the page has no PHP code, or
    * you actually DO have a testing server defined without
    realizing it
    > A testing server may be necessary for some situations,
    but PHP files with
    > nothing but includes in them isn't one of those
    situations.
If the includes are PHP includes it will not work without a
    testing server.
If the includes are HTML includes it will work without a
    testing server
LOCALLY, but if the page has a PHP extension, it will not
    work remotely.

  • How do I transfer files from an old macbook to the new air?

I just received a new macbook air...I am stumped on how to transfer files and more specifically on how to get the Microsoft office for mac onto the harddrive since there is no cd drive!

First, the transfer of files from another computer is best done through Setup Assistant.
    User Pondini has some great comprehensive pages on the very subject right here;
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html
On installing Microsoft Office for the Mac on your unit, the best way is to download the trial of MS Office from Microsoft's website, and then use your disk set's activation code to activate the trial to a registered full version. This way, no DVD reader is needed.
Alternatively, you can use Remote Disk to share a DVD reader from another computer. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777
Or you can purchase an external Superdrive from Apple. Many other external USB DVD units will also work.

  • How can one do a full system restore from Time Machine to a Macbook Air

I recently had a major crash on my two internal disc DualG5. The system internal disk failed completely and I used Time Machine to do a full system restore to the second internal disc. It worked PERFECTLY!! I followed the instructions in support
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15638.html
This involved inserting the Leopard DVD into the optical drive and backing up from my external LaCie time machine backup.
I also have a MacBook Air. I use an external USB HD drive as Time Machine backup. The Air only has one USB port. I have an external DVD drive for the Air. Clearly, I will not be able to mount the DVD and External disk at the same time unless I use a small hub. I guess this will work but is there any other work around. Could I do a full reinstall and then connect the external HD?

    Richard,
Alternatively, you could use Remote Disc Sharing (via the DualG5) to do the install and reserve the USB port for the Time Machine disk.

  • Mom does not see my iChat video, but I see her, and my wife can see mine

When I iChat with Mom, I can see her, but she cannot see my iChat video. All she sees is herself as if she is still in iChat preview mode. Audio works fine. It is like a 1-way video chat with a 2-way audio chat, only we did not request this mode.
This was working for years (from when Mac OS X Panther first offered iChat video chats). Mom only seeing herself is a fairly new situation, but I can not pin down when it started, or what might have triggered it.
My wife can connect with my Mom, and again, my Mom's display stays in preview mode, but my wife can see my Mom, same as I see, only my wife is using her own MacBook Pro.
When I'm at Mom's using my MacBook, I can iChat with my wife. She can see me and I can see her. My wife and I can also successfully iChat video chat when she is away on business trips using the hotel's WiFi. I do not think it is my MacBook, nor my wife's MacBook Pro.
And also while at Mom's with my laptop right next to Mom's iMac G4 using a Bonjour local connection, I see what Mom is sending, but she stays in preview mode only seeing herself.
So I think I've eliminated the internet as a whole, and I've eliminated my MacBook as being the cause.
I really think it is Mom's iMac G4.
I've tried trashing all the iChat related .plist files, but I could have missed something.
Mom's Connection Doctor says it is getting stuff from me at between 13 and 15 frames/second, but all that is shown is her own iSight image.
    Some configuration details:
o Mom's 1.25GHz G4 PowerPC iMac is Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) all the latest updates.
o Mom uses the original firewire iSight.
o While I think I've eliminated the router, it is an 802.11n Airport Extreme (single transmitter in 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz mode, channel 1).
o Verizon DSL connection that has worked just fine in the past, beside same situation occurs when I'm sitting next to Mom using a Bonjour connection.
o Mom is 300 miles away, so I can not just drop in. However, I do have VNC access to Mom's system over an ssh tunnel.
    o Firewall is Off
o My 2GHz intel Core 2 Duo white MacBook is Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8) all the latest updates (w/build-in iSight camera).
o My wife has an intel 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8) all the latest updates (w/build-in iSight camera).
o My router is also an 802.11n Airport Extreme (single transmitter in 802.11n 5GHz only mode), with an older flying saucer Airport Extreme 802.11g in bridge mode to support older Macs and iPod Touchs.
o My broadband is also a Verizon DSL connection.
    o Firewall is Off.
Events that have happened recently. I'm not saying they are the cause, but generally things that did work do not stop working for no reason at all.
    o I've applied Apple's Software Updates.
o I've experimented with TeamViewer.com as an alternative to VNC for remote control (this did not involve video, but it was something new to the mix). NOTE: I DO NOT keep TeamViewer running. I find my VNC via OSXvnc to be satisfactory.
o My nephew moved back in with his Mom (my sister) and his Dad, which is where my Mom happens to live. However, my nephew has his own 12" G4 PowerBook, so he does not need to mess with Mom's. But then again, years ago, I found my Mom's previous Bondi Blue iMac had its web server enabed after a visit from my nephew. Of course now he is a college gradate and much more responsible. Oh yea my nephew was a College Quarterback for a Top Ten College, and I'm a bookworm type. I am not going to accuse my nephew of doing something to his grandmother's iMac unless I have absolute proof
o At one time I had the Chax plug-in installed on Mom's iMac G4. I used Chax to uninstall itself.
I'm stumped. I've tried all the problem isolation things I could think of, as well as the tried and true "Delete the .plist" trick (assuming I found the right .plist(s)).
Has anyone actually lived through this, solve it for someone else, other.

I would do the Latest Combo Installer for the OS level she is at.
That is going to have to wait until after Thanksgiving.
While I'm confident that applying/re-applying the latest Combo Update will not cause any problems, if anything goes wrong (and I know Murphy personally), I will not be able to drive the 300 miles to Mom's house until the weekend following the Thanksgiving weekend.
If I'm going to try doing something like this remotely, I'm not going to do it unless I can get in the car and be a Mom's house the next morning to clean up any mess I create.
So I will put your idea in my "To Do" list (I'll even create a Google Calendar event), to try this 4-Dec-2009.
Thank you for the idea. If I have not found a solution before the 4th, I will install the Combo update.
But I do have a question. Why would Mom's iChat display the video preview window showing what her iSight camera sees, if she was unable to display the remote video stream, just because there was a ColorSpace issue. Hay, I write software for a living, so I know that the left hand does not need to know what the right hand is doing, not the big toe, the elbow, an ear, etc... Software is full of paradoxes. But I figured I would just ask.
And I'm still going to give the Combo update a try on 4-Dec-2009.
But in the mean time. Other suggestions would be appreciated.
Does anyone have a laundry list of .plist files I should try deleting? I did try deleting some obvious ones, but maybe I missed something important, or maybe there is one that does not say iChat, but is just as important.
You never know, if I get enough ideas (tons of ideas), and they all still fail, and I'm frustrated beyond belief, maybe I'll break down and get Mom a nice 27" iMac for Christmas! But if I do that, I'm getting one for me first
