Another pointless whinge?

Right, new here so not really sure what I'm trying to achieve; I suspect that, like many here, I've just become so desparate that I'm hoping writing it down may be cathartic.
My issue began in March 2012 when I asked BT to install a phone line to my house. In brief:
-An appointment was made for a week later, I took the day off but the engineer didnt turn up
-Second appt set 2 weeks after that, engineer took 30 secs to look at the line then disappeared without explanation
-Third appt, 3 week after that, engineer didnt turn up (I've been offered £10 compensation for each missed appt which I'm thrilled about having used up 10% of my annual leave so far....)
So here we are almost in December and nothing has happened in between. Yes, lots and lots of phonecalls to India but absolutely no action. On one occasion the 'customer service' operator did explain that it was a problem with a company called 'Weighleads' who BT subcontract the line installation to; I asked whether I could have their telephone number to see if I could chase them but became suspicious when the operator told me that although they are a UK based company they do not have an address, telephone number or email address. I subsequently found out that the root of the issue may be in granting 'wayleave' to cross a nearby farmer's land and that the operator was confused as to the nature of the relationship between BT and Openreach and thought that 'Weighleads' was the installer! God help me. Incidentally, the farmer is a close friend who maintains that he has never in 9 months being asked for permission to cross his fields. BT cannot tell me whether or not he has ever been contacted.
So it rumbles on, a family of 2 young children, a baby and mum and dad (who used to work from home) having had their lives turned upside down by the sheer incompetence combined with arrogance that could only be borne from an organisation operating safely from within their virtual monopoly. We are three miles from the nearest village and have no landline or mobile reception which naturally worries me, especially when I am overseas. BT have suggested we can use the 'hotspot' in the nearest McDonalds (26 miles away) to work from; I'm not sure my waistline would stand 40 hrs a week based from McDonalds!
My parents tell me this level of service was endemic in the '70's but that it was tempered with a human element which did result in common sense prevailing. I fear BT has captured the worst of both worlds and for the first time in my life, I feel like the helpless victim.
I suppose the icing on the cake was the Ombudsman finding that BT were not liable for failing in their universal service obligation to provide a landline as they had sub-contracted the installation to Openreach whose regulation are not within their remit. Toothless springs to mind!
I was obviously aware of BT's reputation for customer service and have purposefully placed my company's business with an alternative provider as we depend on the provision; however, I could only guess at how bad it could get for a domestic consumer who has no alternative. As consumers we should not allow this to happen and should put pressure on government to act; either to empower the Ombdusman to enable them to hold BT fully to account or to enable other providers to economically enter the market so that consumers can make an informed choice as to what sort of provider they wish to engage with. I'm doing this through my MP and would encourage others who find themselves in the same situation to do the same.

Yep, thought I would join this thread in the hope that like your self writing something down would prove helpful (even if its just to myself).
Try to keep this short.
Firstly the buyer of our house gave BT a moving date of begining of of Nov. I phoned to say this was not going to happen and got that cut off cancelled.
Then got a letter saying he would be taking over the line middle of November. I phoned and got that one cancelled.
Then got a letter saying he woould take over line from 21st November. I phoned and cancelled that too.
I get home from work on the 21st to find infinty not working. I phone BT and have a long complicated conversation with a gentlemen that tells me I have never had infinty!!! After about ten minutes of arguing I realise he thinks I am the new home owner and when I ask him to confirm the number I am calling from, he does not read out my home number, instead he reads out the number of the new home owner.  So we realise what has happened and he says it will be restored over night.
I stupidly believed him.
The next evening, I phone BT again and have to explain the whole situation again. Despite it being really obvious to me what has happened (they have already transferred the line and stopped infinty) the rude person on the other end of the phone tells me, I have been cut off for not paying my bill, as as such will have to pay to get reconnected. Not happy at this point and ask to speak to a supervisior. Eventually he comes on the phone and I expalin again. He says he is sorry but as I have already be disconnected he will have to pass me over to "sales/new customers" to get the phone line restored. Ah ha I think I get through to someone in England and very helpfully told how sorry BT are. My phone will be sorted in a couple of days, but even though I already have the hardware for infinty installed that will need an enginner to visit. This should be less than 7 days but beacuse they are busy the afternoon of 4th December is the earliest they can do (nearly two weeks away).
So we get to last weekend Saturday afternoon and the home phone rings, its BT asking to speak to the proposed new owner, I say he has not moved in and I am the old unhappy owner who still has the new owners phone number. She listens to the whole story and says yes she can see it on her computer that my order it there for infinty and changing back the phone. I ask her to send through confirmation, and she does indeed send an email a few minutes later.
However the email says my phone will be connected on the 7th December, and with a new number not my old number and the engineer will not visit for infinty till 17th!!
Guess who had to phone BT again this morning to try and find out what was going on. Yep me. Half hour and all I found out is an engineer visited the house today and done something, someone may or may not turn up tomorrow afternoon and do something, my phone line should be restored by the 7th but he couldn't tell me to which number. Finally my infinty will definately not be activated till the 17th, so he doesn't know what the engineer who is coming (or probably not) tomorrow is going to do. At the end of the call he then has the cheek to ask if he can help me with anything else.
So tomorrow I'm going to have an expensive afternoon at work waiting for no one to turn up.
Rant over, don't really feel any better for it.

  • Yet another pointless question about the practically non-existent iMac G5 Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk.

    I have a 17" iMac G5 (iSight model) also known as model A1144, PowerMac12,1 or MA063LL/A.
Where do I download the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk for this machine? Apparently nowhere. However, it would really help me on my quest if I knew what I was looking for.
Does anyone know what AHT version is compatable with my machine? 2.2.1? 2.3.1?
How about the part number on the disk? I have some Intel disks that say 2Z691-5734-A that (obviously) won't work.
Is the AHT on Disk 1 or Disk 2? I'm starting to think there never was an AHT for this model.
Where do I get those ASD disks the so called "geniuses" have?

  • ITunes 12.0.1.26 update will not connect to internet, despite no connection problem on my PC?

After upgrading to 12.0.1.26, podcasts won't update and cannot access iTunes Store. Get a message that I cannot access as not connected to internet. There is no problem with my connection. I've rebooted, delete & reloaded etc., still not working. Nothing in the Help section is helping.

Looks like I have fixed the problem by uninstalling then reinstalling the Norton Antivirus software.  Thanks again iTunes for another pointless update that wasted hours of my time in trying to get it to work properly.

  • Fed up with Adobe's customer service

I have to say that Adobe takes the cake as the most inept company in the US, along with AT&T. I filed my application for the free upgrade from CS5.5 in early May, right away they asked me for the invoice, even though I had sent them PDFs of the order confirmation, and shipping confirmation which had all the information they needed, but OK, I went to my account on B&H and downloaded the invoice on PDF and sent that to Adobe. Several weeks went by and no news. In late May I sent them an inquiry through the open case they had opened for me, and they replied that they were working on it. Several days later I called, but their phone menu system is obviously designed to wear people out and get nowhere, so I started a chat online with one of their "agents". This was two Saturdays ago.
As usual I was greeted with a lot of fake politeness that those poor Indian guys are forced to shower the customer with to the point of making you sick, and the guy, after requesting my information told me that my upgrade had been approved and I was going to have it ready within 24 hours. 72 hours later and still no email or any news, so I started another chat, and this guy told me that he approved my order and that it was going to be ready again in 24 hours. Two days later, still no order link, and they close the case saying that the order had been closed and that "The order is currently processing and the download will be available in your Adobe account in 24-48 hours."
Well, two days later still no order, so again another frustrating chat session with another very polite Indian guy (I don't mean that in a demeaning way, since I like Indian people very much), who again told me that my order was going to be ready in 24 hours.
Yesterday after work, still no order, so another pointless chat session with lots of apologizing and condescending and the assurance that he was going to "escalate" this to a superior.
Absolutely fed up I called their number to see if I could -very naively of me, I admit- reach someone at their headquarters that could actually give me my serial number and download link.
After talking and being placed on hold by another guy in India, and adding another 20 minutes of wasted time to the already over two hours I wasted on chat sessions, the guy came back to tell me that he was going to investigate further and call me back, which he never did.
Today, well over a month after I submitted all the requested paperwork, and weeks after most people are happily using Adobe CS6, I'm still waiting for the upgrade I was promised.
The only other time I had to deal with such an extreme level of ineptitude was a year ago with AT&T. Different products, but same terrible customer service, and the obvious realization that these are really chaotic companies where the different departments don't communicate at all with each other, or do so very poorly. I don't blame those poor Indian guys that are probably overworked and underpaid, I blame the American executives that outsource their support to other countries, force them to be unbearably polite to where they actually waste a lot of your time saying "thank you", "I apologize" and repeating what you tell them a million times, and basically read from a script.
In other words, I'm really fed up with Adobe. I understand the fact that they have a lot of these upgrades to process and that takes time. But I'm fed up with their reps telling me that my upgrade is going to be ready in 24 hrs and ten days later it's not, and they keep telling me that over and over. That's just plain bad customer service.

I don't know why the Adobe forums suddenly asked me to sign up for the forum again, even though my registered address with them remain the same, but I mention it so you know I'm the OP.
Just a day after I posted this I had a great customer service experience from a Tier 3 manager, so I want to mention it as well. On Wednesday on my way home from work I called the Adobe headquarters in California (you can google the number easily) and I explained my problem to the woman that answered the phone, so she transferred me to a guy that she said was overseas but was a manager that would help me. I thought to myself, here we go again. After explaining my case to this manager, a very nice guy called Gautam Garg, he asked me to give him 24 hours so he could check on my case, and that he was going to call me back at the same time the next day. I told him that he was telling me the same thing all these other reps had told me before, to give them 24 hours and one of them even told me he was going to call me back and never did. Gautam told me that this was different, that he was going to send me an email right away to prove it and work on my case. I thought to myself, yeah right, like this guy is going to call me back.
Less than an hour later, he calls me back at my home number and tells me that the problem seemed to be that my address was in Kenya. The street address, state and zip code were the real ones, but the country showed as Kenya instead of the USA. I told him it was obviously a glitch in their system. So he told me that instead of the download, he was going to send me the boxed product. I still had my doubts it was going to happen, but I told him I would much rather have the boxed product than the download, so I thanked him for it.
Having seen the previous bureaucracy at Adobe I figured it would take me a couple of weeks to get that box, but still I was happy I was getting the box instead of the download, so I decided to wait. But not even a day after I talked to Gautam, I got an email from Adobe saying that my CS6 had shipped already, using Fedex overnight and gave me a tracking number.
On Friday I came home from work and my CS6 box was already here. I sent an email to Gautam to thank him and I told him that he should get a big raise along with a promotion, because I talked to all those other people using open cases, chat and one phone call before him, and none of those ten people or so did enough to solve my problem, while he went into the system and checked what was wrong with my order and solved me problem in less than an hour. I don't know if the other people that worked on my case were incredibly negligent, but maybe they're not, maybe the support methodology Adobe has for their customer service centers is what's really negligent. Perhaps what Gautam was able to do in less than an hour, all the other people didn't have access to. I don't have a way to know that, but it can't be possible that I have to waste so much time to get the free upgrade I had requested over a month earlier. Still, I'm happy that out of this I got the box instead of the download, so at the end I'm happy with their customer service, but they have to go a long way to make it better so people don't have to go through lots of chats and phone calls to get what they need.

Apple does NOT unlock iPhones.   Only the carrier to whom it is locked can unlock it officially.
If they will not unlock it, there is nothing that can be done officially.
There are litterally thousands of posts on this matter... doing a simple search would have provided the exact same answer without the need to create another pointless thread.

  • Mail on two macs?

    Hi,
my main-mac (iMac), on which I concentrate all my mail-activity, has been for a number of weeks in repair; in the meantime, mailing occured with my mini-Mac.
Does anybody know how I could move the mails which have been received and sent in the meantime from the mini-Mac over to the iMac? I can do that by "forwarding" them to myself, and have the delete-option disabled on my miniMac. but this is quite clumsy, and the dates are not preserved. Copying files (~user/Library/Mail/Mailboxes) over from the mini to the iMac didn't work - apparently, Apple has well hidden the relevant files...
does anybody know how to transfer these files in an elegant way?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thomas

Please, don't make of this yet another pointless discussion about theoretical side issues that have no bearing on the problem at hand.
For the purposes of the OP's problem, which is what we are supposed to be talking about here, if the version of Mac OS X was the same on both computers, copying those files would be all the OP would need to do in order to have Mail setup exactly the same on both computers. Moreover, there would be no better way to accomplish that.
    Sometimes copying these additional files is indeed no big deal;
but sometimes it is, particularly if an unwary user overwrites
data that isn't on the source computer.
So what? Have I suggested copying any files in any case where it wouldn't be appropriate? According to your reasoning, troubleshooting in this forum would be impossible. For every troubleshooting procedure, one could always think of a situation where that procedure wouldn't be appropriate. Does that mean the procedure shouldn't be applied to the problem at hand? Of course not. What matters is whether the procedure is appropriate for the problem that's being discussed. Your theoretical digressions about what could happen in other hypothetical scenarios get us nowhere.
Because not all situations or goals are the same, users should
consider if an export/import operation, syncing, or overwriting
is the best overall choice for them, on an app by app basis.
Have I said otherwise? Please read what I wrote in my first post (the same post where I suggested copying the mail files IF the user wanted to have Mail set up exactly the same on both computers):
Alternatively, if what you really want to do is merge the mail stored on one computer with whatever mail is already stored on the other, then File > Import Mailboxes should be used instead. The more appropriate procedure would depend on what the situation is. It's you who appears to be saying that importing is the most appropriate procedure in all cases, which is plain wrong.

  • Scheduled restart fails due to connected user

    Hi
Here's another 'feature' Apple have added in Mountain Lion which is really irritating. Under Lion and previous if you scheduled a restart for a set time, you got a restart. Under ML, if any other pc or mac on my network has copied a file to or from my restarting machine since the previous restart, it cancels the restart because the restart will disconnect other users. I can understand why, in some circumstances, disconnecting another user would be a bad thing and why they have 'fixed' it. But for me it is just another pointless change which breaks something which worked well. They might at least have added another preference control in the energy saver/restart system pref to enable you to decide whether to disconnect users or not!
I can find various posts on line about ways to use Cron or launchd in the command line to do a forced restart (which I'm a bit nervous about, not least because none of them come with instructions about how to undo or edit what you did if it isn't effective), and various apps in the app store which need to be running 24/7 to do it, but nothing which really replaces the old pre-ML functionality.
Has anyone found a way round this irritation, please? And is there a feature request anywhere on Apple.com so I can bring this to apple's attention?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hai i guess you previous change run have not completed fully wait and check in the joblog once its done restart it will solve your problem .Also be sure no other load is updating 0customer in some other master data chain.
sm12 solves but be careful if somebody else editing check it since its a shared object.
    Goodday.

  • HH5/Infinty 'resets' regularly and speed is gradua...

Had lots of problems with Orange Broadband earlier this year. I had to constantly reset the router to maintain a reasonable speed that would slowly drop until I reset again (up to a doazen times a day at its worst) Orange organised two visits from BT engineers. First chap replaced the entire line segment at my house after hearing lots of noise on the the line. Problem remained so second chap arrived plugged in a tester which gave him green ticks on the diagnostics (twisted pair basic cable test i presume, as it displayed cable length etc) and reported that 'that was all he could do'.
Orange couldn't offer any further service without charging me (?) so I decided to sign up for BT Infinty.
SInce the end of March when infinity was fitted (ignoring the first settling in week) I've had two weeks of constant resets (HH5 reporting that it was going down in the system events) followed by a month of stable 28 down/8 up. Now for the last 8 days or so I'm back to constant resets that show in the WAN logs as loads of PPP traffic (LCP and IPCP request/acks) and a speeds consistently down to 18 down/5 up. The speed reduction is slightly annoying but the dropouts can be 4 or 5 times an hour which grows tiresome when streaming Netflix or in the middle of changing very important details on banking websites etc.
BT performance test shows 18 down/5 up but cant give extra diagnostics due to a fault ( I've tried several times the last two days)
Quiet line test has some crackle on the line.
2 coincidences - Its not stoppped raining for the last fortnight and a BT engineer was working on the pole outside and a nearby residence at the same time the problem started.
I don t see the point in risking a £130 bill for organising another engineer visit when it was No fault found under Orange.
What do I Do??  Please help. I love the service/HH5/BT Sport online etc and don't want to fight contracts and switch to cable but I am growing tired of phone line faults, for four months now under two different providers.

Sorry folks, thought I might catch the eye of a 'I can help you with that' technician and avoid more level 1 phone calls and/or a hefty bill for another pointless  engineer visit but my forum skills are obviously pretty low. I honestly thought joining BT Infinity would be mostly painless after two months of speaking to Orange.

  • FTTP installation problems

I live in a building that is one of the trials for retrofitting FTTP.  I ordered by upgrade to BT Infinity, and had an engineer to visit to install it on the 14th September. It's been 3 weeks since, and apparently I need BT Openreach to "build a V21" for my connection so that it will work.  They have promised to do this in 24 hours several times over the past 3 weeks, but nothing has happened.  Can anyone offer any advice on how to get this to happen?
    Slightly fuller history:
The installation in my flat was fine - fibre run in, modem mounted and connected - but no sync.  After waiting a few hours, the engineer discovered that the configuration had not been set up yet to enable the modem to initialise - I was told it would likely initialise on the next day (Saturday).  The FON indicator was flashing green to show the fibre link is OK, but no sync.  The engineer told me at the time that the connection to the flat is OK, and I definitely would not need another engineer visit as it is a configuration problem at the BT end.
Since then I have had a multitude of calls with BT (mostly the MyOrder FTTP helpdesk) - must have spent several hours on the phone to them, and another pointless engineer visit.  It seems that BT Openreach engineers are happy to tell the MyOrder department lies in order to get out of investigating the problem:
    - They have said it is a problem with the copper cabling to my flat (until I pointed out it is FTTP not FTTC).
    - They have said there has been damage to a cable duct in my area (I had the helpdesk staff member go back to challenge them on that - and they agreed it was rubbish).
At various time the MyOrder FTTP helpdesk have escalated the issue with the engineers, saying that the engineers have 24 hours to respond.  All the engineers seem to do is either tell lies, or try to arrange another engineer visit (I've had two engineers come round since and they saw immediately that it was a pointless visit as "the V21 hasn't been built").  They tried swapping out the modem just in case, with the same result; and waited around for a few hours to see if the configuration would get done, but to no avail.
So, does anyone have any advice?  Apparently it is a relatively simple job, but BT Openreach have to do this piece of configuration and then the connection should start working - getting them to do it seems quite hard!
    Thanks,
    James

You got further than me. I've had the outside work done but then the second engineer to fit the modem didn't turn up last week.
I've spent hours on the phone, sent emails and even had a twitter chat with BT. I was told someone would call me by 5pm today but I wasn't hopeful. I was correct and no call recieved. They were extremely fast at upping my direct debit and taking more money out of my account, though.
Amazing that they mess up and then they charge you for it.

  • Mail missing two macs

    Hi
I had my mail working perfectly on my Mac Mini.  My mail server is a Linux box here at home, and I was using Mail.app as an IMAP client.
I bought a MacBook, and used my Time Machine external HDD to copy data onto the new laptop.  Now, when I send e-mails from either machine, they don't arrive, and are not in 'Sent'.
Anyone else encountered this, and is there something blindingly obvious that I'm missing?

    * Refresh/Home buttons moved to right. A usability downgrade. Does not require Addon to fix.
    * Can't drag shortcuts to the desktop from the favicon if a site is having server troubles. A usability downgrade, or a plain old bug. Requires Addon to fix.
    * Stop button is merged with the Reload button. A usability downgrade. The only way to get exact FF3 functionality is to use an Addon. Moving the Stop button to the right of Reload will merge them. The only way to put it in the same position as FF3 is to add an annoying Seperator between them.

  • Am I the only one who has no print apps? I have had many issues with them working fine then nothing

I have updated re instaslled been on the phone with an agent for three hours exhausted everthing in there book, returned the printer gotten a new one still nothing the i began complaining on here and within 2 days it worked...so now that the apps are down again i figured i would ask HP are you updating again and not filling anyone in on it or do i need to make another pointless phone call

Windows 98 is an ok operating system if you like to be out of date. Just upgrade to XP, that should solve your problem.

  • IOS 6 w/ iphone 4 now doesn't show information on bluetooth music sync pioneer.  What's the plan on this fix, buy another phone?  Become a part of the commercial from Samsung bashing this pointless updates?

pioneer avh-3400bh, just got it installed, read reviews online about bluetooth music information no longer showing up after ios6 update....... any clue to when Apple will either fix this error or allow people to go back to older versions of operating systems?

FINALLY! a firmware update came out today for the 3400BH (among others) - I got an email from PIoneer and downloaded and installed the new firmware - now the radio works perfect! The only problem is, you can only install the firmware update via bluetooth PC, which is NOT as easy as the instrucions show - if you have a bluetooth dongle (like I do) there were several issues during the install - finally got it installed (not quite sure how exactly) but it works.

  • Another user who can't use an Apple TV

After much anticipation I managed to get my hands on an Apple TV 2 days ago. Unfortunately, I seemed to have joined the club of folks who can't seem to get their Apple TVs up and running (see elsewhere on this forum, e.g. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12471381). The story goes like this...
    1. Apple TV connects to my wifi, but then sits on the "Waiting for network services..." screen with pin wheel indefinitely (I waited for over 6 hours, periodically knocking the screensaver off, making sure it didn't go to sleep).
    2. Pressing the menu button while it was failing to connect would take me to the main menu. Movie thumbnails were visible and I could watch previews. Couldn't connect to youtube but I could connect to my MobileMe gallery.
    3. Couldn't activate home sharing as it claimed my iTunes Store username/password were invalid. This isn't the case as the same username/password combination work fine on my other machines (an iMac, two MacBooks and an iPhone). To be double sure I updated my account details to have a password with more than 8 characters including a number and a combination of uppercase/lowercase) and checked my c/card details were up to date. Still no joy. So, I can't connect to my iTunes library to watch video or listen to audio (making the ATV a bit pointless).
    4. Having read all the discussion of this on the forums (and the Apple trouble shooting guides) I've tried the following
    - making sure all ports are open on my router (especially the relevant ports for NTP etc)
    - checking the network traffic was OK (all my devices are able to get network time OK, use Home Sharing withing the LAN, connect to the iTunes store etc)
    - Updating to iTunes 10.0.1
    - Turning off/on home sharing on my iMac
    - Restarting my machines
    - Restarting my router
    - pulling my hair out
    5. I called apple support who were useless. This was a real blow. In the past, I've always found Apple support to be brilliant, but today the guy I spoke to couldn't get me off the phone fast enough. All he wanted to do was email me a link to the support page, even though I had already told him that I had spent two days working through these!!! Totally useless. This is a real shame since the support was one of the reasons to choose Apple. If I wan't bad service, I'd have bought a Dell.
    6. I returned the ATV to the Apple Store. Unfortunately, they were unable/unwilling to test it in the store but offered me an exchange or a refund. In the end I left with a new unit. Unfortunately this has not solved the problem - exactly the same result with the new unit.
So where am I left? Two units won't work in my home, so it's unlikely to be a faulty unit. I tried my router wide open (allowing all incoming/outgoign traffic) so I don't see that being the problem. My ISP (Plusnet in the UK) clearly isn't blocking the required ports as my other machines (using the same Netgear DGN2000 ADSL wireless router) seem to be able to use these ports/services just fine.
I can see that some would take the above as evidence that my network is to blame. However, all the tests I can do suggest that my network and router are working perfectly well and that the ATV should also work. At the end of the day, if I went and bought an airport extreme (which costs 150% of the cost of the ATV) I'd still have to connect to my ISP though my router since the airport extreme isn't an ADSL router. Frankly, I resent having to buy new routers just to test to see if the ATV will work. The kit I have meets the industry standards to the ATV should work!!
The replacement ATV is going back to the store for a refund this week, unless anyone has a useful suggestion?

Alley_Cat - all good advice, thanks. Sadly, I've already tried most of your suggestions...

You seem to be partially connected to the internet, so AppleTV is seeing the that, it looks as though LAN communication is the issue.
Yes and no. As I understand it, Home Sharing verification is via the iTunes store, and my account wont verify, so there are still some WAN issues. "Partially connected" seems to be the right word!

I can't say I've ever seen 'waiting for network services', but had problems getting Home Sharing to work initially as it seemed to disable itself when I pressed 'Done' at the end of the enabling process in iTunes. Try disabling/enabling again and not pressing done just clicking movies or something in iTunes - if I didn't do this the Home Sharing icon kept disappearing.
I've seen this reported elsewhere on the forum. Tried not pressing "done" after activating Home Sharing, but still no connectivity

I would be tempted to configure your router to assign a fixed LAN IP address for AppleTV based on it's MAC address, then restart everything. Also try temporarily disabling any wi-fi security, can you then connect fully (you may have done this I think)?
If you have a long ethernet cable or ethernet connection is simple (nearby router, or direct to a local computer) try connecting that to the router to see if it's a wi-fi issue.
Yeah, already enabled all traffic, tried with both fixed IP and DHCP assigned IP, both wifi and wired, Also tried connecting via my iMac. Makes no difference
    Alley_Cat wrote:
You can clearly connect in part to the internet, but it's odd you can access MobileMe, and not YouTube. It would be worth checking your ISP is not blocking anything or having issues - you've already sorted the router by the sounds of it.
I contacted my ISP, but this seems unlikely. All my other Apple devices seem to be able to communicated just fine over the internet.

On the Mac, things like NetBarrier, Little Snitch might block AppleTV if not configured to allow traffic. Temporarily disable software firewalls including OS X if you haven't done so.
Don't have any of this software (and the software firewalls are all turned off)

I can't remember at the minute if AppleTV 2 has an iTunes Store country setting (old one did) but if your store credentials are not being recognised it could be defaulting to the wrong country for some reason, and not set to UK. Another possibility is that the authentication happens via iTunes (I don't think it does in all honesty), so if AppleTV isn't seeing iTunes, it may not be able to authenticate and gives a vague error message.
Early ATV2 users noted that they had to change the country settings from US, but mine was shipped with UK already set.
    Alley_Cat wrote:
This is obvious but I assume you are not inadvertently trying to enable Home Sharing with your MobileMe credentials - it could easily be done, but doubt your doing that. I also assume you don't have multiple itunes Store login names.
One final thing I would do before giving up is to create a dummy account and set up a new itunes library with a few things in it, enable Home Sharing etc again with this - if there's a configuration issue with the existing user's iTunes account, or some library corruption, the communication could be falling over as it encounters an error in the library it can't deal with (poor error handling in itunes or AppleTv code).
Always good to rule out user-stupidity!!! :o)
I've made sure I'm using the correct username/password combination for my iTunes account (this is different from my MobileMe account). I've also made sure that my password conforms to the requested standard (min 8 chars, at least 1 numeric, at least 1 uppercase, at least 1 lowercase, no spaces). I've also tried creating a new iTunes store account. Still no good.
