Audiobook is correctly marked as audiobook in iTunes. Is m4b format. Multiple files making up one audiobook. I listen to audiobook up to a point. Pause. Press and hold little button down to go through sections, listen to some music, press and hold down little button and choose the audiobook and it starts from the start. (((((((
It should start where I was up to.
This is basic functionality which I should be able to get, right? How?
Any help on this would be really, really appreciated

You need to choose an English-speaking country - I have Settings > General > International > Region Format set to United Kingdom (as I'm in the UK), so the first day of the week is monday and times are of the format 01:23 etc (there also options for US, Canada, Australia etc)

If the iTunes purchases are not in your iTunes library you can redownload them by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If you restore from backup, not that synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup and thus if those items are not in the iTunes library they can't be restored to the iPod during the latter part of the restore process.

Well, you shouldn't use your iPod to chew gum with. That's what your teeth are for.

Not sure what you mean as it shouldn't have installed at all if it didn't meet the system requirements.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:

Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.
