Any script to automate stretching PDF to create bleeds?

Hi everyone!
I work for a Direct Mail company and we constantly get pdf's from clients that have color and artwork going to the edge but the artwork doesn't have any bleeds. When this happens, I usually place the pdf(usually 8.5" x 11") in a new InDesign document, copy each page, paste it over the original, shrink the new pasted layer to 1/8" wide and then use the Free Transform tool to expand it to 1/4" so it adds bleeds for a new pdf(which is 8.75" x 11.25" with crop marks and bleeds). And then do this for each side. If there are a few pages, it isn't a big deal but lately we are getting 20+ page pdf's and it is taking a lot more time to create. So is there a script that will automate this? Or one that will add crop marks and bleeds to an existing PDF? Unfortunately some of the documents have text going almost to the edge so I couldn't just take the pdf, expand it, and re-export it. Thanks for any help!
Adam

Bob, if I take the original pdf with text close to the edge, upsize it to the size with bleeds, and then fill the frame, it will take the text that was close to the edge and then expand it and the text would be in the area that is trimmed after it is printed and cut. Here is an example of what I usually do to 'add bleeds'. The blue stroke is the original image. I copy and paste it, resize and then stretch just the edge so that most of the information stays in the same place but only the edges are stretched to 'add bleeds'.
SReigel, we do have the policy to send us correct artwork and explain to the client how to do it but some are provided artwork from elsewhere and have no way to adjust it. If they have the original artwork file created in an Adobe program, Publisher, etc, we can take those files and reset it for print but most of our clients don't have the original design files or were given the files for print by another person who didn't create it so that is why I have to adjust them for print.

    Thanks for the reply. Of all the suggestions I've received this seemed to

    You don't want the UncompressPDF plugin - that's designed to split out the
    COS objects but doesn't remove the Flate encoding (plus if you've never
    compiled a plugin before, it's not really the time to learn).
    Instead, simply save your PDF file using the PDF (Optimized) file type,
    click the Settings button and under "Clean Up" - "Object compression
    options", choose "Remove compression". Turn everything else off if you
    want to retain the PDF content exactly as it was before.
    Your document-level scripts will then be in the file as plain text.

    I've got a Windows 7 (64-bit) machine and I'm trying to use the built-in Powershell to automate PowerPoint 2010 to create PDFs from PPT and PPTX files in a folder.

  • Pdf file created in Word 2008 will not open in Acrobat 8.2.6 or any other Adobe program

    I have created a 12 page newsletter in Microsoft Word Publisher 2008 and have done so many times before with no problem. Today, I have tried to save it as a .pdf file both in Save As and through the printer. Each .pdf file created in Word will not open in Acrobat 8.2.6, Photoshop C3, Adobe Reader  nor any other Adobe software.
    When I go to open it in Acrobat, my Mac gives me the spinning rainbow. If I try to click on the file, I get a watch and then Acrobat crashes or I have to force quit the software. I really need to convert this file and get it to the printer. Any advice???

    Here is a better example.
    https://www.calcerts.com/PBR1.pdf
    is the original PDF file that is uploaded by a user.  Note that it is only 48kb in size.
    I take the file, add a couple of watermarks and a footer for each page as well as a small image on the last page, add security on it and BAM, the file:
    https://www.calcerts.com/PBR1_AFTER.pdf
    is now 1.5 MB and it takes a LONG time to print.

    Is there any way to embed the pdf file in the book created in iBooks Author to make it available to be downloaded or sent to email?
    I'm making the book for children and there is one chapter providing coloring pages. So I wish to attach pdf files that allow users to download it at the end of chapter so that  they can print it out. Been searching through discussion, I've found some advice about taking screen snapshot page-by-page > then send the pics from photo album to email. However, I'm wondering if there's a way that make the process easier.

    Warehouse that PDF on your own server, then link to it from your book.

  • Advanced "Save as PDF" script that saves 2 PDF presets with 2 different Names

    HI Everyone,
    I am looking to improve a save as pdf workflow and was hoping to get some direction. Here is the background...
    I routinely have to save numerous files as 2 separate PDFs with different settings (a high res printable version and a low res email version). Each file has to be renamed as follows...
    Original filename = MikesPDF.ai
    High Res PDF Filename = MikesPDF_HR.pdf
    Low Res PDF Filename = MikesPDF_LR.pdf
    I was able to alter the default "SaveAsPDF" script to save the files to my desired settings and to add the suffix to the name. So with these scripts here is how the workflow operates...
    1. Open all files I wish to save as pdfs
    2. Select script to save files as high res pdfs
    3. Illustrator asks me to choose a destination.
    4. Illustrator adds the appropriate suffix and saves each file as a pdf to my desired setting. ("Save As" not "Save a Copy").
    5. Now all of the open windows are the new pdfs, not the original ai files.
    6. Now I have to close each window. For some reason Illustrator asks me if I want to save each document when I tell it to close window, even though the file was just saved. I tell it to not save and everything seems to be fine.
    7. Reopen all the files I just saved as high res pdfs.
    8. Repeat the entire process except I run the script specifically designed for the low res pdfs.
    What I would like to do is to combine these two processes so that there will be one script that saves both pdfs. From what I understand, the script can't support "Save A Copy" so the workflow would go as follows...
    1. Open all files I wish to save as pdfs
    2. Select single script to save files as both high res and low res pdfs
    3. Illustrator asks me to choose a destination.
    4. Illustrator saves each file as a High Res PDF and adds the the "_HR" suffix.
    5. Illustrator then re-saves the open windows as a Low Res PDF and replaces the "_HR" suffix with "_LR".
    Here is the code for the High Res script, The Low Res script is pretty much the same except for a different preset name and different suffix. Any pointer that anyone could give me would be most appreciated. I am pretty much a noob to this stuff so please keep that in mind.
    Thanks!
    Mike

  • Script to automate the display language on windows server

    Hi,
    I'm looking for a script which should change the windows display language from non-english to english (vizversa).
    Here is the scenario:
    On windows server 2008 R2 I have two language installed - Japanese and English with the help of MUI packs available on microsoft site. The native language of windows server 2008 R2 is Japanese. Consider there are 10 sys admins only knows
    Japanese but not english. Similarly there are 10 sys admins knowing only English. I  being english administrator, i should each time go to regional setting in the control panel and click on change display language to english. After
    I finish my task I need to set back the language to japanese(native).
    I'm looking for script which can auotmate this process.
    Objective:
    The script should automatical change the language to Japanese when I logoff from the system.
    Here is the steps to reach "Change Display language" on windows server 2008
    Go to control Panel > Category view (on right side top ) > System and Security > Clock ,Language and Region > Under “Regional Language” > Change display
    language > Go to Tab “Keyboards and Languages” > Look for the dropdown menu “Choose a display language” and choose the appropriate language you prefer from the dropdown list
    Kindly note this menu/option is available for Vista,Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. This option is also available on Windows XP/Server 2000/2003 provided the LIP/MUI is installed.

    Guys,
    Forgive me, but I think you are making this far too complicated. Using a script to achieve this is, in my view the wrong tool, and a little dangerous. If your logoff script fails to run for any reason, 11 Japanese sysadmins will be waving Samurai swords
    at you :-).
    There is a single Group Policy setting that will do exactly what you want on Vista, W7, W2K8 & R2.
    Create a new Group Policy object ("English_interface", for example.
    Edit the new policy object
    Drill down to "User Configuration, Policies, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options"
    Pick the setting "Restricts the UI languages Windows should use for the selected user" and Enable it.
    Drop down the "Restrict users to the following language" and pick "English"
    Click "OK"
    Link your new GPO somewhere in the OU hierarchy that contains the English user
    If other (Japanese?) users are also in the same container, you can filter application of the GPO by security group so that the policy can only be read and applied by the English group.
    That's all you need to do!
    As a point of principle. I ALWAYS install my OS in US English then add languages, and set the locals to use their own language. This is because service packs and hotfixes invariably arrive for US English first, and some hot fixes are NEVER translated.
    I'm just doing this for a single W7 build in English, to be deployed in 6 countries, with 7 different languages and 9 different keyboard layouts. Fun...
    Come back if you need more help. I volunteer to visit and help if you want!

    The autoslideshow in Lightroom was originally replicated when I made a pdf file for mailing.
    I find that now the pdf file is 'dead' ie the user has to flip through as opposed to Acrobat doing it automatically - ie frame advance with blending transition. Some setting has changed and I can't figure it out.
    Any insight will be most appreciated.

    Yes, the duration is set, and in LR it works fine. When the PDF is created, it is 'dead'. As mentioned above, it did work on the first try, so I feel some user setting has got corrupted/changed.

  • Problem printing pdf documents created by ps2pdf

    When I try to print pdf documents that have been created from ps documents by ps2pdf, the output is corrupted. Many letters are missing but included graphics are printed just fine. This happens with my HP printer and with cups-pdf, when I print the pdf document to a new pdf document. There are no errors in the logs, so I don't know what is goning wrong. On a windows PC, the pdf documents are printed correct too. Other pdf documents, created by pdflatex are printed correct.
    If I don't use ps2pdf and print the ps document directly, the output is correct. I have tried different pdf-viewers without any difference. About half a year ago, everything was working fine, so could it be related to : "As of version cups 1.5.3-3 ArchLinux makes use of the new full pdf-based printing workflow."?

    Flo,
    In my limited experience with the iOS iWork apps, they weren't designed for those who are picky about the layout. They are highly automatic and if you don't like the result, it's not easy to override. If the format when printed leaves unpleasant margins, I think your best approach is to reshape the tables in such a way that they will better fit the target media. If you are having large top margin, make the tables narrower, then when they scale to fit the paper, then may fill it better.

    Sorry for delay...
    I just tested script and it's working fine for me here.
    I created 4 sample PDF-s with just one page, then started script,
    selected exported PDF-s, script sorts them by creation date and loads
    placegun.
    So, all you need to do, is to start script and select documents you want to
    place.
    I changed script little, so make sure you use this one:
    if(app.documents.length != 0){
        var myFiles = File.openDialog("Select Files:", "*.pdf", true);
        if(myFiles != null){
            myFiles.sort(function ( a, b )
                    if ( a.created < b.created )
                        return -1;
                    if ( a.created > b.created )
                        return 1;
                    return 0;
            app.activeDocument.place(myFiles);
