Any surprises in 1.5?

I'm about to purchase the 1.5 upgrade and I'm curious if anyone ran an upgrade and ran into any sort of issue?
Are the searches faster in 1.5?
Thanks!

This has solved loads of people who have this issue and have used an alternate DNS setting.  Below are instructions for both iPhone OTA and on you Mac
If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try an OTA (over the air update)
Change DNS Servers
Settings -> Wi-Fi
Click the blue arrow on your connected network
Delete everything in DNS and replace it with 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
Try again
If this works, you will probably want to remove the WiFi network using "Forget This Network" and then reconnect to it to get your original DNS servers back. Alternatively, make a note of the original DNS servers before deleting them and replace it after you are done.
If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try through iTunes
On your Mac
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
Select the network connection service you want to use (such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, unless you named it something else) from the list, and then click Advanced.
Click DNS, and then click Add at the bottom of the DNS Servers list. Enter the IPv4 address for the DNS server.
You can use OpenDNS
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
or
You can Google Public DNS if you want
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

  • How do I travel to other countries and have my phone still work and not get any surprises in the bill?

How do I travel to other countries and have my phone still work and not get any surprises in the bill?

Depends on what you mean by "surprises" in the bill. Verizon's rates for using your phone internationally are pretty expensive, ~$0.99/minute. I would certainly think a 10 minute call for $10 would be surprising!
Well it would certainly depend on your phone, but if it is a 4G LTE phone, you can simply purchase a prepaid SIM card from the location you are going, switch that with the SIM card currently in your phone and you would be using your phone locally in that location. Of course you would need to notify people needing to contact you of your "temporary" new international phone number. Make sure you keep your Verizon SIM card safe as you would want to switch back to it when returning to the states.
You can see Verizon's global services information HERE. It includes a trip planner and would be more specific on the prices you would expect to pay if you chose to use Verizon's service rather than a local SIM card from where you are visiting.

  • Connecting My Droid 3 to WiFi -- Does It Use Any of My 2gig Data Plan?

I finally purchased my first smart phone, the Droid 3.  I'm curious about connecting my phone to the internet using my WiFi network at home.  If I connect my phone to my home network to download apps/videos/web pages, will it use up any of my 2gig monthly limit?  I really can't afford more than $30 a month for data, so if WiFi doesn't use my my quota, it will really be fantastic.  I'm really new to smart phones, so I don't know too much about them.   Thanks for the advice, in advance!

I would also suggest reading up on what eats up data. 2 gigs is a pretty good amount of data for the average user. However, streaming music or video when you're not on wifi can burn through it real quick. Also, monitor your data use closely for a while until you get familiar with how much you are using so there aren't any surprises when you get your bill. There's a number you can call to check on data use or you can check it on your "my Verizon" account.

  • Surprises with Deauthorizing/Authorizing?

In trying to set up iCloud, I just discovered I've reached my limit on iTunes with devices, so will need to deauthorize one of my older laptops. That's not a problem in that I plan to use my 'free pass' to deactivate all --- just this once.
BEFORE I do that, are there any surprises I'll need to know about? My husband and I have new iPhones, two desktops, and a laptop we will want to reauthorize. Will I need to plan for anything ahead of time, or do I just open iTunes and reauthorize through that application at that time?
    Thanks for your help!

I'm worried that some day I'm going to be stuck with $1,000 of music and no way to play it.
    You won't get stuck.

If you change the motherboard or add RAM, iTunes will think it's a new computer.

  • IPhone 5s battery drain fast with iOS 8.1.2

I have iPhone 5s from 1 year. After updating to 8.1.2 battery draining fast. I needs charge the battery 3-4 times a day. I did the restore as new, but no change. Stopping the apps does not help. Please for advice.

I have also experienced this, but I think I have started to narrow things down. First of all, I am on an iPhone 5S 32gb, and I did NOT have any of these battery issues under 8.1.1, but since upgrading, the battery drains more quickly for sure.
What I have noticed, however, is that there are some strange correlations going on with what appears to be ridiculously severe battery drain - my phone will show 50% battery, and minutes later (of normal use, taking photos, screen at about 50% brightness, no overt internet or GPS activity) it will suddenly shut down completely. This seems to happen most WHEN IT IS COLD and I am using it outside.
When I try to turn it back on right after, I get the "plug me in" screen, as one would expect with a dead phone. However, if I wait a few minutes and let the phone warm up a bit, I hold down the power switch and on it comes, and when it comes on, the battery indicator will show 50% battery life again. I think of this as my FALSE BATTERY DRAIN problem, possibly unrelated to the actual battery life. I have only noticed this happening while running the Camera or Safari apps. Looking at my usage doesn't seem to turn up any surprises.
So Apple... what the heck is going on here? Is this an OS problem, is it an issue with your apps, with app conflicts... what is going on?
This is unacceptable. You know after being an Apple user for 35 years now I am not going to switch to Android lightly, but this is pushing me that way, and it is certainly going to keep me from updating to a newer, shinier phone until you show some commitment to supporting your users, who seem to be experiencing battery issues rather frequently these days.
Please at least show some INTEREST in being involved in this solution... I'm not seeing any indications of effort to fix this.
    Thank you.

  • How do I transfer my contacts and other information from my 4S to my 5S when I receive it?

In the past, I've always purchased my iPhone upgrades from the store (either Apple or AT&T) but I think I'm finally savvy enough to do all this on my own.
I searched the knowledge base but I couldn't find anything that addressed this particular issue, and AT&T is even less helpful.
I'm guessing I would do this in iTunes, but how does it work? Are there any surprises I need to be ready for?
    Thanks, all!

WE love Macs is a joke. 650 new and 550 refurbished. Plus their phone people are dumb as ____. These prices I assume are = to what the "genius" bar would charge. I love those geniuses last time I talked to them they tried to argue that os x could not read nor write to ntfs disks. OBviously they cannot write to them ( I'm sure there is software out there that makes it possible, but not natively) I was speaking to a supervisor to!!!
Anyways I digress, the second option seems interesting what did they charge you? Any surprises?
    Thanks

  • 3G Issues on Bell Canada Network

    Hi,
I have been without 3g service on my 32GB 3G iPad 2 for the last three days. My 3G data did work beforehand. My Wi-fi connection works fine.
I get no 3G connection using any app but when using Safari, I get an error message of:
    Cannont Open Page
Safari cannot open the page because the network connection was lost.
My iPad shows full bars and says Bell 3G in the corner.
I spent a lot of time on the phone with tech support running me through the standard troubleshooting procedures, turning settings on and off, resets, I even did a full restore when I got home.
Thinking it may be a hardware issue, I went to the Apple Store and they gave me a whole new iPad, but after reinserting my SIM, I got the same issue.
I went over to the Bell kiosk in the mall and was there for about an hour doing more troubleshooting including giving me a new SIM card.
I'm thinking the probability of having two faulty iPads is pretty low and am assuming it is totally on Bell's shoulders. Talking to tech support today, they admitted they've had a few similar calls.
Has anyone else experienced the same issues?
I am kinda POd as I had a skin on the back of my original iPad that wasn't coming off in any nice fashion so I had to leave it on the iPad going back to the warehouse esentially putting me out money.
I'm supposedly a "high priority" with Bell and am expecting a callback later today or tomorrow.
I'll be switching to Rogers or Telus if this isn't wrapped up soon, so annoying.

    @spitfire411
Here's the confusing part.  You are claiming that you are on a shared data plan and yet your wife's corporate only has a 500Mb data plan.  As I recall from a Bell Canada rep, any shared data plan with a smartphone (iPhone) requires a minimum of a 1Gb data plan.  And in order to achieve something similar to what you thought you are getting, you need a small business account with about 1000 voice mins plus extra $30 gets you a 6Gb data plan and plus $10 additional share plan to share the data plan with your tablet (that was when the 1st iPad came out -- they lowered the restrictions somewhat since then).  I had to upgrade to this plan in order to get sharing and tethering to work properly.  The monthly flex plan you mentioned is I believe an independent plan by itself and should not be tied with your wife's corporate plan.  Perhaps they may have made a mistake and tagged your tablet's plan as a shared data plan with a smartphone, but since it's only a 500Mb data plan, the system probably refused to allow sharing because of its failure to meet the minimum 1Gb data plan for smartphones that's required.  Unless Bell had changed this requirement recently?!?
Bell's Corporate EPP plan is not the same as a small or business plan because some people can get it through say BCAA (then) or Costco or an employee working for a company, so sometimes Bell people confused what's possible in a business plan that is not available on a corporate plan and I suspect this may explain why you lost access after the 1st billing cycle.
To give you an idea, minimal browsing and email and social networking can consume about 1Gb/month with an iPad.  Any minimal Youtube streaming and Shoutcast or Tunein Radio usage on top of what you are doing, you will need a minimum of about 3Gb/month.  Yes, a tablet can suck bandwidth much more than an iPhone which probably explains why Bell wants you to have a minimum 1Gb data plan so if you plan to tether an iPad to an iPhone, you are not going to get any surprises with a 1Gb data plan as opposed to a 500Mb plan.  So unless you have a large data plan (5Gb or higher), you should keep your smartphone and tablet plans separate.
Good luck in your progress with Bell and let us know what you found.

  • Cost of calling local # in foreign country

What is the cost of calling a local number when I am in a foreign country?  Is it just the same roaming charge I would pay to call a US number from that country?  That's what a Verizon representative told me but it doesn't sound right.
If I am in London, for example, and I have the Global Value Plan will I pay $.99/minute to call a London number or a US number?

        nycityny,
We do not want you to have any surprise charges on your bill. Lets make sure you are able to see exactly what the rates for calling a number in the use while international. The rate for making a call while in London whether calling an international number or dialing a number from the U.S. the rate is $0.99 per minutes with the Global Value Plan. • RIM ripping off everyone outside of US (pretty much)

I am a ridiculously loyal Blackberry user. For a short while (two weeks) I defected to the iPhone, but quickly realized it was mistake and came straight back.
I did buy an iPad when they came out, but I actually prefer my Playbook so the iPad is gathering dust somewhere in the house.
So, it seriously p****s me off that RIM insist on totally ripping me off when it comes to prices in Blackberry App World.
Many of you reading this won't realize that RIM are charging everyone else exactly the same numerical value for apps, but changing the currency symbol.
So, if an app costs $10 the price in the UK will be £10 and in Europe it will be 10 euros.
This is an amazing rip-off. It is like sticking a finger up at all your loyal customers and figuring out we're all thick and will never know what is going on.
Here's the math. If an app is priced at $10 that is £6.33, which is nowhere near £10. Even if you add in VAT at 20%, it still only adds up to £7.59.
This mean RIM are charging UK customer over THIRTY PER CENT more than US users for exactly the same software. Do the publishers get paid a percentage of this rip-off rate. My guess that RIM are paying out a percent of the $10 price and NOT the £10 they are actually charging.
I was in France last week and wasn't surprised that all the prices were exactly the same, but with just a Euro symbol in front.
Is it any surprise that Apple, who lead the way as far as apps are concerned, ARE charging 69p for a $1 app. That is FAIR and is how it should be.
RIM have a lot to learn if they are going to compete in this market place. A good place for them to start would be to stop ripping of their loyal customers.
I could almost understand it if RIM were an American company, as American companies can be a little bit US-centric (understandable I suppose), but for goodness sake, they're a Canadian company and should know better.
As much as I want to love RIM I am finding it harder and harder to do so, when they behave like this.

You think it's just Blackberry that is ripping people off ? Look at car prices, gas prices, appliances, you name it, the list could go on for ever.
It's called market pricing, making the price to what the market will stand.

  • Stalling and backing up applications / Time Machine

    Hi all,
So a few weeks ago I noticed that my MacBook Pro was starting to stall every so often, only for about 10 or 15 seconds. It gradually became worse and worse to the point that I became worried. I tried clearing up space on the hard drive but that did nothing. So I did a little Googling and found the SMART Utility, which I downloaded and ran. The utility told me my hard drive was failing, which I had been a little worried about because of a strange mechanical sound (always in the same 3-part cadence) that the computer emitted (albeit very softly) every time the stalling occurred.
I had an external hard drive that held all of my Mac files, but that recently died. So I bought a new 1 TB drive (Iomega) and began backing up my PC with it. (Side note: I use Paragon NTFS for Mac so that I can read and write on both my Mac and PC.) I finally plugged the new drive into my Mac, it was recognizing, everything was great. However, I went to Time Machine and tried to start a backup, but the external drive was not being listed as a possible backup location. I did some research and I think I figured out that the hard drive has to be empty and formatted for Mac HFS+.
As I already have PC backups on my drive, I don't want to have to reformat it and go about that whole process, and I really don't want to have to partition the drive, as Paragon works brilliantly for me.
But my main concern is that I want to back up my applications before I take the computer in for the hard drive issue. I own Final Cut Pro and various related programs which, due to various reasons, I no longer have installation CDs or information for. I can't afford to have a new drive put into my Mac and then not be able to load FCP onto the new drive. Is there a way that I can back up my applications (and everything else, but the applications are most important) without reformatting my external and using Time Machine? And is there a way to reinstall these applications on my new internal Mac drive (once it is installed) that won't require the installation CDs?
    Thanks so much!

Yes, TM should be able to do a full system restore from a full system backup. However, I've never done that, while I have (many times on many machines) cloned drives with CCC (and I own SuperDuper another superb application for cloning, but it is shareware while CCC is donationware).
I have not messed with mixed partitioning schemes like that for years as they were always too problematic to make it worth trusting anything serious like a master backup to. The simplicity of the cloning idea when replacing a drive is that the clone is a bootable exact copy of your existing drive. To be bootable though, it must be partitioned with a GUID partitioning scheme, then formatted for a file system.
Honestly, I have no idea about making a two partition GUID drive, with NTFS and Mac OS file system partitions. For one thing, windows will want to change the boot sector over to a Windows MBR when you try to format one partition as NTFS - that will render it unbootable on your mac (at least Windows XP always forced that change to a disc). I know I would not trust a master backup of any of my machines to such a disk. In all seriousness, I would spring the extra $100-150 for an external drive for just the clone since I would know that would work fine, without any surprise issues.
Or, if you have somewhere you could park the windows backup files temporarily, use your existing drive to get the new internal drive setup, then go back to using it as NTFS for both machines.

  • How to reference MS Access database in ColdFusion MX 7 on 64-bit Windows

    I am migrating customers from:
    Windows 2000 Server (fully patched)
    Internet Information Services (IIS) 5
    ColdFusion 5
    to:
Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition (fully patched)
Internet Information Services (IIS) 6 (running in 32-bit
    mode)
    ColdFusion MX 7 (7.0.2) Standard
Unfortunately, some of these existing customers are still
using Microsoft Access databases instead of SQL Server. Having all
of these existing customers migrate to SQL Server is not yet
practical. On the old Windows 2000 / ColdFusion 5 server, they are
using OLE DB data sources to reference the MS Access databases
using the "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" provider. None are configured
to use ODBC drivers when referencing MS Access or SQL Server.
I have yet to figure out how to get ColdFusion MX 7 to:
    - Create a data source that references MS Access databases on
    64-bit Windows.
    - Reference an existing MS Access data source created with
the 32-bit version of the ODBC Data Source Manager on 64-bit
    Windows.
A bit of background information regarding MS Access on 64-bit
    Windows:
    - At the time of this writing, Microsoft has not
created/released 64-bit drivers for Microsoft Access and it's
unlikely they ever will, for understandable reasons.
    - Contrary to seemingly popular belief, the Microsoft Jet 4.0
Database Engine does exist on 64-bit Windows. See the following
regarding version and file location information:
How to obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft Jet
    4.0 Database Engine
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114
    - You CAN create MS Access based data sources within 64-bit
Windows, but they have to be made using the 32-bit version of "ODBC
Data Source Manager". I'm assuming these DSNs may only be used by
32-bit applications, but I have not tested that theory.
    32-bit data sources:
    ODBC Data Source Manager:
    %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe
    Registry location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ODBC
    Default file DSN directory:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ODBC\Data Sources
    64-bit data sources:
    ODBC Data Source Manager:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\odbcad32.exe
    Registry location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC
    Default file DSN directory:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\ODBC\Data Sources
The 64-bit version of "ODBC Data Source Manager" (under
Administrative Tools) only show "SQL Server" and/or "SQL Native
Client" as options when creating new data sources, unless
third-party software is installed that supplies additional drivers.
The 32-bit version of "ODBC Data Source Manager" (by default,
there is no shortcut for this in the Start menu) shows the typical
drivers seen on 32-bit versions of Windows, including SQL Server,
SQL Native Client, Microsoft Access, Excel, FoxPro, Paradox, etc.
When using ColdFusion Administrator in ColdFusion MX 7.0.2 in
64-bit Windows 2003 (IIS is running in 32-bit mode to allow
ColdFusion MX 7 to function at all), two problems are encountered
when dealing with MS Access (and presumably other 32-bit drivers).
In both cases, ColdFusion is trying to reference the registry
location for 64-bit data sources instead of 32-bit:
    1. Creating a new data source within ColdFusion
    Administrator:
    Data Source Name: whatever
    Driver: Microsoft Access
    CF Data Source Name: whatever
Database file: (physical path to whatever.mdb)
(other settings are irrelvant for this example)
    Error generated when submitting:
Unable to update the NT registry.
    Cannot open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI\ODBC
Data Sources: Windows error number 5 occurred.Access is denied.
ColdFusion stores the data source, however a "verify"
    generates the following error:
Connection verification failed for data source: whatever
    java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][SequeLink JDBC
Driver][ODBC Socket]internal error: Data source name not found and
    no default driver specified
The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException:
    [Macromedia][SequeLink JDBC Driver][ODBC Socket]internal error:
Data source name not found and no default driver specified
    2. Creating the data source using the 32-bit version of "ODBC
Data Source Manager" then trying to reference it with ColdFusion:
    ODBC Data Source Manager:
    System DSN or File DSN:
    Name: whatever
    Driver: Microsoft Access Driver (.mdb)
    Database: (physical path to whatever.mdb)
(creation is successful within ODBC Data Source Manager)
Reference the above DSN within ColdFusion Administrator:
    Data Source Name: whatever
    Driver: ODBC Socket
    Error generated when submitting:
Error accessing available odbc datasources. - Cannot open
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI\ODBC Data Sources:
Windows error 2 occurred. The system cannot find the file specified.
ColdFusion MX 7 can't find the 32-bit data source on 64-bit
Windows because it's looking for it in the wrong registry location.
Can ColdFusion MX 7 be configured to look in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ODBC
    instead of
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC
    on a 64-bit Windows machine?

    Paul,
Thanks for the insight on this. Regarding the initial problem
I ran into with creating Access based DSNs, very early-on, I
noticed there were two different driver options for Access
displayed within ColdFusion MX 7 Administrator:
    Microsoft Access
    Microsoft Access with Unicode
For reasons I'm am still baffled over, I somehow completely
forgot about and through the wonders of apparent tunnel vision,
completely overlooked the "Microsoft Access with Unicode" driver
option when I was running through my tests.
At your seemingly-obvious suggestion, I created a data source
using the Microsoft Access with Unicode driver and it worked
perfectly fine with the one customer's web site I'm using for
testing (of course, this is a copy--the production site is still
housed on the old ColdFusion 5 server). This obviously doesn't
actually fix the underlying issue with ColdFusion looking in the
wrong part of the registry on 64-bit Windows, but at least when it
comes to dealing with Access databases, your suggestion of using
the Microsoft Access with Unicode driver appears to be a functional
work-around. So long as there aren't any surprises waiting for me,
hopefully this will also work for the remaining ColdFusion sites I
have to migrate that are using Access databases.
Since you mentioned JDBC drivers in comparison with ODBC, I'm
pointing out a couple of references in case they're helpful to
    anyone following this thread:
ColdFusion MX 7 - About JDBC
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/7/htmldocs/00001736.htm
    Types of JDBC technology drivers
    http://java.sun.com/products/jdbc/driverdesc.html
    http://java.sun.com/products/jdbc/
I don't actually develop anything in ColdFusion, so I'm
dealing with all of this from a server administration standpoint
since we do have some domain hosting customers that do develop or
at least have existing ColdFusion based sites. I am all
too-familiar with the caveats of using Access in any kind of
production or heavily used environment and have spent years keeping
users away from ODBC. For ColdFusion users, that meant creating OLE
DB DSNs and often having to fix poorly written SQL statements and
fixing ColdFusion date-related values and boolean values (the
common problems encountered when switching CF / MS Access users
from ODBC to OLE DB). I can only recall running into problems with
a single SQL Server based ColdFusion site when migrating from ODBC
to OLE DB. That customer never did get their many coding problems
fixed, so they're the only ones still using ODBC in CF. I have no
idea what'll happen when that one site gets migrated over--if it'll
even work. Obviously a lot of things have changed between
ColdFusion 5 and the MX versions that have come along afterward.
Thanks again for the Access with Unicode driver tip and JDBC
info. It looks like I can finally start moving forward again with
    the site migration process.

  • Applying Patches to ISE 1.2.0.899

I am running ISE 1.2.0.899 Patch level 2.
I want to upgrade to patch level 6.
I understand that the ptaches are supposed to be cumulative and not incremental...but I want to make sure as I am 4 levels behind...Is there anything special I have to do? Do I just apply patch 6 from the Primary Admin node and it brings me straight to patch 6?
Didn't note anything in the release notes, but I don't want to run into any surprises.
    Thanks,
    Phill

    Well,
I upgraded to patch 6. The patch did not replicate over to the other two nodes as I expected.
I called TAC and was told to accomplish this manually, which I did on the secondary node.
I did not have FTP access to the one in my DMZ, so I had to put that one off until the evening (had to get the firewall guy to give me access...then wait until after production hours). Anyhow, we noted a large increase in traffic between the primary ISE node and the Policy Service node in our DMZ...traffic flow seemed to be around 40 megs. This flow ceased when I manually upgraded the DMZ Policy Service Node.

  • Dng. files from LR to PS CC ok Can't open in Camera Raw?

I have LR 5.7 and can edit my dng. files in PS CC but I can only get Camera Filter not full camera raw w/ all the tools. I am a PC user, BTW.
How do I open full Camera raw for a dng. file?
    Thanks, very frustrated.
    Chris

Because it was edited in lightroom first, photoshop knows enough to bypass camera raw since the controls are identical. If you open the dng file using the normal way like any other format, then it would open in camera raw first.
Keep in mind if you already did any editing in lightroom, those edits needs to be saved to that dng file before you can do the above otherwise camera raw and photoshop will not see the edits you did.
To save a file in lightroom select the file in the library and use ctrl-s to save.
If you do the above, lightroom will not automatically see the changes done in camera raw or photoshop. In library view there will be an icon in the thumbnails corner. This appears when changes to the metadata do not match that of lightroom's database. Clicking the icon should provide a dialog box asking if you want to update lightroom or leave it unchanged.
If you do a folder full, you can sync that folder to update all of them. Keep in mind syncing overwrites your changes in lightroom so make sure that is what you want to do.
I personally try to make it a habit to save all the images from lightroom, just so I don't get any surprises when syncing. There is an icon in the corner of those that need saving.

  • Mac OS X 10.5.8  upgrade to X10.6.8.

Hello! Currently I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8 on my IMac, the new Iphone Itunes requires X10.6.8.
I use Imovie often and have an older version of it.

    Thanks,
    Mike
