Apple AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n - MB321LL/A. How to set it up to my new iMac

Community:
How do you set up an
Apple AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n - MB321LL/A how do you set up on Mac running on OS X 10.9.4?
Please advise
Fmsalazar

Apple did say it was important.
If the units do not show up in the airport utility then you must set it correctly to link-local.
Steps for OS X Lion or Mountain Lion
This can happen if IPv6 has been disabled. To enable IPv6 for your network interface:
Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, and then click Network.
If a lock icon appears in the lower-left corner, click it and enter your admin name and password to unlock the pane.
Click your network service (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) in the list, and then click Advanced.
Click the TCP/IP tab.
Choose Link-local only from the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu.
Click OK.
Click Apply.
AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3
Apple rep says the same.
Re: Unexpected error when connecting Airport Express A1264 to Airport Utility 6.3.1
I am searching as I saw it in a thread today where a person had issues. (No contribution from me in the thread but found that was the issue).
It is kind of a fail safe.. since auto can end up with any setting.. and it will depend on the setting of ipv6 in the Airport Router if it works properly in the computer.. setting it to the correct value is one step in sorting out problems when people get in a mess.

  • AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes Questions

My internet comes in to one room in my house. All that is in there is a cable modem and a Linksys wireless router. All computers in my house access the web wirelessly through this modem.
In another room I have an iMac, that is my main computer and has my music on it.
Across the room from that computer is my stereo. There is no ethernet connectivity near the stereo.
I want to play my iTunes through my stereo and use my iPhone as a remote, but I am happy with my current router.
    My questions are:
    1. Can I buy one AE Base w/iTunes and use it as a link between my iMac and my stereo without using it for Internet access?
    2. Do I have to buy two AE Bases and use one to replace my current router?
I live in a small town, no Apple store. I called Apple support yesterday but nobody I talked to seemed to be able to answer my questions.
Any light that anyone can shed on this for me would be much appreciated.
    Scott

you can use the express near the receiver and connected to it then if the range is acceptable have it join the linksys network. you can set it up no internet just stream music. it may give you some grief to set it up but with patience and logic its doable.

  • Apple Airport Express Base Station 10/100BASE-T Ethernet WAN port with AirT

Hello fellow mac users, I am currently interested in getting the Apple Airport Express Base Station 10/100BASE-T Ethernet WAN port with AirTunes. However I already have a Linksys Wireless G with SpeedBooster router. Will the Airport Express with iTunes work with my router? Or will it work with any router? Thanks!
P.S. I want to get the Apple Airport Express Base Station 10/100BASE-T Ethernet WAN port with AirTunes
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Yes, it should be possible. Since your iMac is connected via Ethernet to another router, you would have to reconfigure which Network Service you will be using on the iMac to switch between streaming and connecting to the Internet.
For example, I am assuming that the Built-in Ethernet service is currently at the top of the Port Configurations 0list within System Preferences > Network > Show = Network Port Configurations when your iMac is connected to the other router by Ethernet. You would then need to drag the AirPort item to the top of the list, and then, connect to the AirPort Express to stream.
The other option to avoid this is to configure the AirPort Express to join the wireless network created by the 2Wire router.

  • AirPort Express Base Station with AirTunes, is it worth it?

I am about to buy a MacBook and get a wireless capable printer and I'm wondering if it's worth buying the AirPort Express Base Station with AirTunes. Does it improve internet connectivity? I have a Cable modem will the Mac pick up the connection automatically?
    thanks!

    Hi liquid_garnet,
    welcome to macbook forum.
First check your wirelesss printer that you want to buy, and make sure they have intel mac driver for it in the box or on their sites.
And check your cable modem, see if the modem is capable with wireless networking (usually if the box has antenna, it should be wifi capable), if it does, why bother to buy another wireless access point?
If you really need wireless access point, I suggest you consider a wireless router hub, so you can connect up to 4 computer wired and not to mention the wireless capability too, rather than airport express with iTunes that only can act as wireless access point and cannot act as a hub.
    Good Luck.

  • Anybody use an Apple AirPort Express Base Station (windows)

    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB...mco=MTIxODk3Mw
Im thinking about getting one of these and just wanting people opinions on it working with windows.
Just im a little confused, can i use it as a wireless router insted of my net gear, or will i still have to use my net gear router. My internet comes from the telephone wire if that helps?
    Many thanks James

Hello jshrubb. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since you didn't include the model of your Netgear router, it will be a little hard to determine if the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) could replace all of its functions.
So, here's what the AirPort Express is, and is not to help you decide:
o The AX is an Internet wireless router.
o The AX does not have a built-in modem: DSL, ADSL, Satellite or cable ... so one of these will still be required.
o The AX does not have a built-in Ethernet switch. It does have an Ethernet port, but that ports primary function is to be connected to the modem. However, it could be used to connect a wired client, but only if the AX is reconfigured as either a remote or relay base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). The bottom-line here is that if you need to support wired clients, the AX would not be the appropriate choice for your network.
o The AX does support iTunes audio streaming so that when connected to either a pair of powered speakers or an audio system, you can stream iTunes to speakers wirelessly.

  • Airport express base station with HI-FI to play music, how to do this.

I have an airport express base station and would like to know if I can use it to connect to my Home Theater and play music from my iTunes and or ipad/iphone (or Sonos), and how would I do this if so.

Once setup the airport express can be used by any wireless device. The actual OS or firmware it is running is irrelevant.
So simple.. set up the airport express in whatever role you want them.. I cannot give you details since you have not given any info on how you want to use them.
Once setup say to play music to a speaker.. the Mac will be able to find the device.. airport utility will see the device .. it is simply that Apple decided you cannot configure it.
If you want details, then we need full details of the network.. and how you intend to use the express.

  • What needs to be done to avoid WIFI drop-offs with Apple AirPort Extreme Base station with Extended Wifi

    Hi there,
can anybody please advise me what needs to be done to avoid WIFI drop-offs every half an hour or 1 hours.
I use voip phoe calls a lot using my WIFI, However my AirPort WIFI connection drops-off while I am in the middle of WIFI VOIP calls.  This is causing significant disturbance in my family.
    Please assist.
In details, I have extended my WIFI range using 2 Apple Airport Extreme Base Station.
Main Base is - A1408 9 (5th Gen),  and I have extended my WIFI in my L shape house by connecting another Apple AiPort A1354 ( 4th Gen) with AA1408.
    Note1:
    > when I am close to A1408 my iPhone4 connected with A1408 automatically
    > When I am close ot A1354 , my iPhone4 connected with A1354 automatically.
Note2: these drop-offs never occurred when I had only 1 Apple AirPort Extreme Base station WIFI
I think, this Auto switching causing the slight drop outs in my Wifi when I am on the VOIP call.
Do you think that something is going wrong with my Apple AirPort Wifi extended?
    Much appreciated

To help eliminate drop-offs you need to ensure that your extended network is operating at its peak bandwidth performance. Base station placement is critical in an extended network. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.

  • I want to set up my Airport Express Base Station again but do not remember how. Please walk me thru it.

I am trying to hook my Airport Express Base Station up to be a router again and have forgotten how to do this. Before I had it hooked through the modeum and would like to have it that way again but for some reason the process has completely left my memory. I know it has something to do with the little icon on the top of the computer but not what it has to do with it. Because it is not hooked up I am unable to get my printer to work unless I connect to another wireless that I have but do not want to use all of the time since I have to pay for it and do not have  many GB. I am also paying for another that I want to use all of the time (unless necessary to use the other) so It only cost me when I am away from home. Please walk me through the process of hooking the Apple router back up.

All apple routers are setup via Airport Utility.. there is no icon for it in the top menu area.. I think you are confusing the airport network setup (ie the internal wireless card in the Mac) with the airport express setup.. Apple insist on calling everything the same name which makes it more confusing.
Open the airport utility which you find under applications/utilties.
Router setting will depend on what version of the utility you are using.
In version 5 it is under Internet tab and in v6 utility under network. You need to set it to DHCP + NAT.
Download and read the manual for setting up the express if you have forgotten the details.. manuals are always good.. all the manuals are listed at the head of the section. But you are in Time Capsule instead of extreme/express specific area.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport
    Manuals link http://support.apple.com/manuals/%23airport
If you want the express as router the modem should be bridged or it should be a pure modem for it to work without Double NAT issues. There is nothing wrong with bridging the Express.. that is not the same as using it in wireless bridge modes.. that is router bridge.
    What modem do you have?
I am at a loss to understand the rest.. why the printer is not part of your own network.. and how setting up the airport this way is important. You need to give us specific details if you need more help.
How exactly is the airport setup now?
How do you connect to the modem?
How is the printer connected? What kind of printer?

  • Trouble using Airport Express Base Station with DSL modem, Router and Hub

About 18 months ago, I had an Airport (802.11b) with WAN & LAN ports and modem hooked up to support two laptops, a Titanium Powerbook G4/600 and G3/400. The setup went from DSL modem -> Linksys router -> to Airport -> Hub (which had desktop and ethernet laser printer plugged in). The network worked fine.
Then, I got a G4 iBook to replace G3/400. Wanted to get 802.11g to support “g” Airport card in iBook. Got a Linksys 802.11g Wi-Fi with 4-port router for $50. Hooked it up directly with DSL modem. (Couldn’t get it to send out to hub). Hooked the desktop and ethernet laser printer into Linksys Wi-Fi/router. The only way I could use the printer was by having it be a shared printer from the desktop. This was often problematic.
Two months ago, I got a refurbished Airport Extreme Base Station. I can’t get the AEBS to interface directly with the DSL modem, so I hooked it up as follows:
DSL modem -> Linksys router -> to AEBS -> Hub. I plugged my Epson 820 (USB) into the AEBS and can see it to print to.
I have a static IP. That info is entered into Linksys router. Router set as Gateway, with DHCP enabled. AEBS is set to Connect using Ethernet, Configure using DHCP. Network setting: Distribute IP Addresses is unchecked.
    Here’s my issue:
I can’t see the ethernet laser printer. It will occasionally flash available, but is gone in less than a minute. The printer is HP 2100 series.
Sometimes I can connect to the desktop G4 tower; most times I can’t.
I have checked and double-checked the cables.
Both the printer and desktop are connected to the Hub.
What can I do so that I can see the HP 2100 series printer and the G4 tower?

    Don,
Thanks for the suggestions. Glutton for punishment that I am, I tried this again, “just for grins.“ The six other times I tried this, I couldn’t get the AEBS to “see” the Internet. And lo, this time it worked. Here’s the setup now:
DSL modem -> AEBS -> 4-port hub (which is connected to G4 tower and HP 2100 Ethernet printer). My USB Epson is connected to the AEBS, and I can print from the laptops. AEBS is set up: manual IP info, Network: distribute IP address; share a single IP using DHCP.
When I still couldn’t see the desktop G4 and the Ethernet HP 2100 connected via the hub (not), I got a flash. I had swapped out the cable a number of times to no avail. Then I realized, the hub is old and all the cables I was using are the new CAT5s. I dug out an old four-wire with RJ45 connectors that my husband made years ago (probably a cross-over cable). It was quite an effort as the cable is 30 ft. long and wrapped around the perimeter of the office behind desks and file cabinets, entwined with all the other wires. But I plugged it in and, Shazam! I am WORKING!
And, Don, thanks to you, I have eliminated the router from my gaggle of electronic boxes.

  • HT3728 my broadband speed has all of a sudden been reduced dramatically over the weekend. the isp asked me to eliminate my apple airport express base station to make sure that my 20mb band is being delivered which i did and confirmed so.

MY BROADBAND HAS BEEN REDUCED DRAMATICALLY IN MY HOME NETWORK USING MY AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION.
THIS HAPPENED  SO UNEXPECTEDLY OVER THE WEEKEND. I CALL MY ISP AND THEY SIMPLY TOLD ME TO ELIMINATE THE AIRPORT
EXTREME BASE  STATION  TO CONFIRM THAT  WHAT I  HAVE PURCHASED  IS BEING DELIVERED WHICH I  DID AND CONFIRMED.
MEANWHILE USING MY  NETWORK UNTIL LAST  FRIDAY EVERYTHING LOOKED  JUST  GREAT.
I  WONDER WHETHER  I WOULD HAVE TO   RESET MY  AIRPORT EXTREME TO FACTORY  SETTINGS TO RECONFIGURE  IT.

Hmm. Your ISP is incorrect in telling you that removing any of your routers on the local area network will have anything to do with the bandwidth performance that they provide you at the Internet modem. On the other hand, changing/removing networking equipment on your local network DOES affect bandwidth performance on that local network.
Most likely what the ISP is asking you to do is verify that you are getting their promised download/upload bandwidth at the modem. It appears that you did that and verified that you are getting the stated bandwidth.
So, we should take a look at why, when adding the AirPort Extreme, you are getting less.
First off, which AirPort Extreme model do you have? What is the make & model of the broadband modem that your ISP is providing you?
It is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment when introducing new hardware. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.
(p.s. Please don't use all capital letters when you post. It appears to readers that you are shouting. Thx!)

  • Does not having windows xp keep your pc from communicating with an apple airport express base station?

Does not having windows xp keep your pc from communication with an apple airport base station?

It say's this on the main Apple Website:
Support for WPA requires Mac OS X v10.3 or later.  Use of Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) reduces the maximum number of network users. When joining an existing wireless network, AirPort Express supports only WPA-Personal. WPA2 requires a Mac computer with an AirPort Extreme Card and Mac OS X v10.3 or later.
So it has to be on WPA-Personal.
The Airport Utility should tell you what is wrong with it when it is orange.
Also, is it running on the same channel? For instance, are they both running on channel 1? Are you extending a network, or creating a network?
Hope that brain snap just puts everything together.

  • How Do I Run Older AirPort Express Base Station with Yosemite

I am running Yosemite, Airport Utility 6.3.4, which doesn't see my older Air Port Express.
I also have an older Mac, running Snow Leopard, which does see it.
In other threads discussing this same issue, access to an older mac is proposed as a solution... but the level of detail doesn't go much beyond, "use a Mac running an older operating system / version of airport utility to reconfigure the Air Port Express."
How do I use the older version of the air port utility on one computer and ultimately get the newer computer with the newer version of the air port utility to see the Air Port Express? Step by step instructions would be much appreciated!

Once setup the airport express can be used by any wireless device. The actual OS or firmware it is running is irrelevant.

  • How can I manage an older airport express base station with Mountain Lion?

This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
I tried to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on my Mac OSX 10.8 Mac Book and it will not allow me to.  How do I manage my "older" airport?

The 5.6 version can be installed but it does take an alternative route to do so. For example, you can use a utility like Pacifist to first extract the utility, and then, move it to the Utilities folder. Once "installed" by this method, it runs just fine on Mountain Lion.
