Apple did say it was important.
If the units do not show up in the airport utility then you must set it correctly to link-local.
Steps for OS X Lion or Mountain Lion
This can happen if IPv6 has been disabled. To enable IPv6 for your network interface:
Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, and then click Network.
If a lock icon appears in the lower-left corner, click it and enter your admin name and password to unlock the pane.
Click your network service (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) in the list, and then click Advanced.
Click the TCP/IP tab.
Choose Link-local only from the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu.
Click OK.
Click Apply.

I am searching as I saw it in a thread today where a person had issues. (No contribution from me in the thread but found that was the issue).
It is kind of a fail safe.. since auto can end up with any setting.. and it will depend on the setting of ipv6 in the Airport Router if it works properly in the computer.. setting it to the correct value is one step in sorting out problems when people get in a mess.

I am about to buy a MacBook and get a wireless capable printer and I'm wondering if it's worth buying the AirPort Express Base Station with AirTunes. Does it improve internet connectivity? I have a Cable modem will the Mac pick up the connection automatically?

welcome to macbook forum.
First check your wirelesss printer that you want to buy, and make sure they have intel mac driver for it in the box or on their sites.
And check your cable modem, see if the modem is capable with wireless networking (usually if the box has antenna, it should be wifi capable), if it does, why bother to buy another wireless access point?
If you really need wireless access point, I suggest you consider a wireless router hub, so you can connect up to 4 computer wired and not to mention the wireless capability too, rather than airport express with iTunes that only can act as wireless access point and cannot act as a hub.

Airtunes with Airport Express Base Station stopped working for no reason

I used to play music through AirTunes with no problem. I have an Airport Express Base Station and I'm connected to it with an Airport Extreme Card built-in my iBook G4. When I came home after day at work (with the iBook, which is connected in there to wireless access point but not Apple), Airtunes is not working. Also I can not see my (not closed network) Base Station in Airport Admin Utility, internet connection is still working fine. If I connect to the Base Station by pressing button Other, manually type IP of Base Station I can connect to it and administrate it. Airtunes is allowed there, in iTunes too but it is just not working, I don't know about anything that could has been changed. I think nothing has. AppleTalk is runnig only on Airport card. Thank anyone for any advice. I tried to update firmware in the Base Station today and no software update is available.

Please perform a "factory default" reset on your AirPort Express. Note you may need to do this a few times to make sure it "sticks." Once completed successfully, the status light should flash amber NOT green.
This type of reset will reconfigure the Express to its factory settings. That is, it will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name (aka SSID) of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN
Can your Win7 computer find and connect to this network now? If it can, then do so and the AirPort Utility on the PC should now be able to find the Express.

Airport express base station with HI-FI to play music, how to do this.

Extend Range of Belkin Wireless Router with Airport Express Base Station

I would like to know if I can extend the range of my Belkin N1 Wireless Router using the the Apple Airport Express Base Station?

DLink Xtreme wireless N cabled to the Time Capsule 1TB - Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi. In addition to extending wireless range, would this also allow me to connect cabled devices to the Airport? In essence, increasing the number of cable ports available on the network?
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the D-Link router to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Configure the Time Capsule as a "bridge" to use the exact same wireless network name, exact security and password as the D-Link router and you will in effect, have one large wireless network. Computers will be able to "roam" from one area to another and they will automatically connect to the router with the strongest signal.
The ethernet ports on the Time Capsule would be active and operate exactly the same as the LAN ports on the D-Link. Computers could plug into either router for an ethernet connection.
The toughest challenge in this type of configuration with routers from two different manufacturers is that they typically use different names for security types. If the security settings between the two routers do not match exactly, you won't have one network, you'll have two, each requiring a separate log on.
Check the configuration pages on the D-Link to see what type of security it is configured to use. Hopefully, it is +WPA2 Personal+, since that is the most compatible type of security among devices. Or +WPA/WPA2 Personal+ would work.
If the D-Link does not use this type of security, what is it using now? What are the other WPA associated settings that are available? We need to know this in order to provide you with the correct step by step configuration.

Airport Express Base Station and AirTunes

I was given an Airport Express Base Station and I purchased
a PCMCIA wireless card (802.11g). After installation of both items I then upgraded the iTunes software to v4.9. I want to transmit music from my laptop to the Airport Express Base Station. I understand I require the AirTunes software butI cannot find a download site for that application. The CD that came with the Base Station does not have Airtunes (obviously an older version of the application software). Is AirTunes available as a download?

Airtunes support is built in to iTunes version 4.9 - there is no other software you need to download or install. If your PC has been successfully set up to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, a drop down box will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes application window where you can select the place your iTunes should be playing (ie internal speakers, or the Airport Express).
You did not mention either (a) configuring your Airport Express or (b) setting up your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network. To do this:
(a) read the configuration manual for the Airport Express. Then download the Airport 4.2 update for Windows (from Apple's web site) - it provides the latest Windows versions of the Airport Express configuration software.
(b) to get your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, see the links to "accessing an airport network" provided at:

Trouble using Airport Express Base Station with DSL modem, Router and Hub

About 18 months ago, I had an Airport (802.11b) with WAN & LAN ports and modem hooked up to support two laptops, a Titanium Powerbook G4/600 and G3/400. The setup went from DSL modem -> Linksys router -> to Airport -> Hub (which had desktop and ethernet laser printer plugged in). The network worked fine.
Then, I got a G4 iBook to replace G3/400. Wanted to get 802.11g to support “g” Airport card in iBook. Got a Linksys 802.11g Wi-Fi with 4-port router for $50. Hooked it up directly with DSL modem. (Couldn’t get it to send out to hub). Hooked the desktop and ethernet laser printer into Linksys Wi-Fi/router. The only way I could use the printer was by having it be a shared printer from the desktop. This was often problematic.
Two months ago, I got a refurbished Airport Extreme Base Station. I can’t get the AEBS to interface directly with the DSL modem, so I hooked it up as follows:
DSL modem -> Linksys router -> to AEBS -> Hub. I plugged my Epson 820 (USB) into the AEBS and can see it to print to.
I have a static IP. That info is entered into Linksys router. Router set as Gateway, with DHCP enabled. AEBS is set to Connect using Ethernet, Configure using DHCP. Network setting: Distribute IP Addresses is unchecked.
Here’s my issue:
I can’t see the ethernet laser printer. It will occasionally flash available, but is gone in less than a minute. The printer is HP 2100 series.
Sometimes I can connect to the desktop G4 tower; most times I can’t.
I have checked and double-checked the cables.
Both the printer and desktop are connected to the Hub.
What can I do so that I can see the HP 2100 series printer and the G4 tower?

Thanks for the suggestions. Glutton for punishment that I am, I tried this again, “just for grins.“ The six other times I tried this, I couldn’t get the AEBS to “see” the Internet. And lo, this time it worked. Here’s the setup now:
DSL modem -> AEBS -> 4-port hub (which is connected to G4 tower and HP 2100 Ethernet printer). My USB Epson is connected to the AEBS, and I can print from the laptops. AEBS is set up: manual IP info, Network: distribute IP address; share a single IP using DHCP.
When I still couldn’t see the desktop G4 and the Ethernet HP 2100 connected via the hub (not), I got a flash. I had swapped out the cable a number of times to no avail. Then I realized, the hub is old and all the cables I was using are the new CAT5s. I dug out an old four-wire with RJ45 connectors that my husband made years ago (probably a cross-over cable). It was quite an effort as the cable is 30 ft. long and wrapped around the perimeter of the office behind desks and file cabinets, entwined with all the other wires. But I plugged it in and, Shazam! I am WORKING!
And, Don, thanks to you, I have eliminated the router from my gaggle of electronic boxes.

How Do I Run Older AirPort Express Base Station with Yosemite

I am running Yosemite, Airport Utility 6.3.4, which doesn't see my older Air Port Express.
I also have an older Mac, running Snow Leopard, which does see it.
In other threads discussing this same issue, access to an older mac is proposed as a solution... but the level of detail doesn't go much beyond, "use a Mac running an older operating system / version of airport utility to reconfigure the Air Port Express."
How do I use the older version of the air port utility on one computer and ultimately get the newer computer with the newer version of the air port utility to see the Air Port Express? Step by step instructions would be much appreciated!

How can I manage an older airport express base station with Mountain Lion?

I tried to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on my Mac OSX 10.8 Mac Book and it will not allow me to. How do I manage my "older" airport?

The 5.6 version can be installed but it does take an alternative route to do so. For example, you can use a utility like Pacifist to first extract the utility, and then, move it to the Utilities folder. Once "installed" by this method, it runs just fine on Mountain Lion.

AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes Questions

My internet comes in to one room in my house. All that is in there is a cable modem and a Linksys wireless router. All computers in my house access the web wirelessly through this modem.
In another room I have an iMac, that is my main computer and has my music on it.
Across the room from that computer is my stereo. There is no ethernet connectivity near the stereo.
I want to play my iTunes through my stereo and use my iPhone as a remote, but I am happy with my current router.
My questions are:
1. Can I buy one AE Base w/iTunes and use it as a link between my iMac and my stereo without using it for Internet access?
2. Do I have to buy two AE Bases and use one to replace my current router?
I live in a small town, no Apple store. I called Apple support yesterday but nobody I talked to seemed to be able to answer my questions.
Any light that anyone can shed on this for me would be much appreciated.

you can use the express near the receiver and connected to it then if the range is acceptable have it join the linksys network. you can set it up no internet just stream music. it may give you some grief to set it up but with patience and logic its doable.

The first generation Time Capsule was not a simultaneous dual band device.
If you add the "new" AirPort Express to the network and configure it to "Extend a wireless network", it will extend the one single band signal that it is receiving from the Time Capsule.
In other words, the AirPort Express will not extend simultaneous dual bands in this type of setup...since it can only "extend" what it receives. You would need a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule if you want that type of functionality.

Cannot configure and connect to Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 with Windows 7 (x64)

I am not able to connect Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 with Windows 7 (x64). I did a factory reset, uninstalled and reinstalled the AirPort Utility for Windows v. 5.6.1.
My objective is to extend a non-Apple WiFi network with Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 and use it for direct ethernet and/ or wireless connection. Any guidance as to how I can get set up here?

This is very common, we run a mix of mac and various pc brand desktops and laptops, what I have found is that using the windows wireless client rather than manufacturers on some laptops helps, getting the latest wireless drivers from the manufacturer has helped, make sure all your windows updates XP and Vista are current.
If all the above is covered try the different WEP WPA WPA2 variants or even without for test purposes. I have most success with WPA2.
Finally I am assuming your running the latest firmware on the express unit, whilst this hasn't attributed to better connectivity for us I did it regardless.

Have this brand new AirPort Express Base Station that I want to install in place of the Linksys router that is connected to the Time Warner cable base station delivering internet connection so I can connect HP Laser Jet 6/6mp printer via USB on the AirPort Express. If I use the Airport Express Base Station as wireless router for internet service coming in from Time Warner AND plug the HP LaserJet printer USB plug into the AirportExpressBaseStation will I be able to overcome the communication problem I am having when I plug in the HPLP's USB plug directly into the MacBookPro and cannot get use of the printer due to language ( Apple Talk vs Post Script ) problems ? Probably not make any difference since the USB female on the AEBS is just a conductor !
