Apple grow up?

I was bought a new iPad for for my birthday, I personally would not have bought one however I have it, it is a lovely device. To my dismay, I found that it will not connect with any of my phones all printers because they're not Apple ! I now wish to open a Netflix or Love film.com account and find that the best films only run on Silverlight. On further investigation I find yet again Apple does not support Silverlight. Is there any download I can get so that it will run high quality video from that I love films on my iPad. I would guess not, because Apple again will not support it. I really think it's high time Apple grew up got a spine and joined the real world, in the most interconnected world we've ever lived in Apple, for some reason choose to stand alone. When asked in a survey for Apple having registered my iPad I replied,  the iPad is merely a toy and I'm afraid non-support of other manufacturers equipment merely confirms that. They tell me there's a saying "once you've and a Mac you never go back" well he is one that will never own a Mac until they joined the real world.

Have you installed netflix ipad app?

  • Alternatives to Leopard Server

Given the number of glitches , bugs , Documentation fuzziness and a few more subjects we are considering dropping mac os X server has a production platform on newer systems and we are looking for Working stable alternatives to os X Server, i hope we can come back to os X server in the future but until then we will have to switch to something else.
Any suggestions will be more than welcome and studied in detail....
I am sorry if this sounds off topic in the Mac os X Server forums but since we are getting so little feedback about the many issues plaguing mac os X Server from Apple in Europe (yes even through support calls that keep mentionning "we have an update coming for the last 2 months) none of them as resolved the issues we are facing.
Thanking you for your time and attention and waiting to read from you soon ,
    Best Regards,

    Camelot wrote:
At the end of the day Mac OS X Server is not going to be the best tool for every job.
Server Admin does a reasonable job for common setups, but there are going to be a lot of people who step outside of the box that Server Admin lives in. I know I'm one of them. Whether that means you're no better off than you would be on another platform depends on what your priorities are. If a unified GUI is important to you and Server Admin isn't up to your needs then Mac OS X may not be the best option. If, on the other hand, you don't mind stepping away from Server Admin in the cases where you need more than it offers you still get the other benefits of OS X.
As we are in the 'web' portion of this forum, I'll only address my thoughts on the web tools. I agree with most all that Camelot and others have said. Particularly where one doesn't want to rely on one server for all services -- but even that is predicated on load over all else. Surely a 10 person company with one website, email and off-topic services such as file sharing in a mixed environment could be completely happy with a high-end mini or any Xserve for all services.
However, part of what Apple is selling is a web-capable server. At 10.5.2, OSXS is NOT a great GUI-managed tool for web services. Not only does it still have bugs with regard to Site management and choices the Server group made with configuring httpd (as well as an anemic php/mysql implementation), there are significant limits to using services such as ftp, mail, even listserves.
I remember thinking when they hired the likes of Eric Z from Starnine (as it was in the throws of building Webstar 4 and being sold to 4D) that maybe he would bring some fine ideas to the Server group. He wasn't technically proficient like real coders such as CJ, but he had some understanding of what Webstar had in terms of strengths. To date, I've not seen a lot of evidence that those strengths have made it to the OSXS product. They didn't in Tiger, they aren't there in Leopard 10.5.2 (yet).
Where is a simplified GUI admin for supporting multiple FTP accounts to the same home/site (or subpaths within a site)? Where is a decent GUI for admin of php4 settings, even something as simple as upping the .ini file size limits? Where is a decent GUI for supporting multiple domain names in the listserve product? Why does performance cache redirect to an alternate port when an iWeb user uploads oddly-crafted XML tags and the php interpreter parses the page incorrectly? Where is there user-assignable admin rights to email accounts for a specific domain so a sysadmin can delegate account management to a client?
The list goes on and on. I'm appreciative of what Apple has been able to do with much of the 'web' part of the GUI, but there are many, many features that can be GUI-ized (and should be) if Apple want to continue to push the paradigm that the machine should not get in the way of the user. I've a stack of 20+ year old Addison publications where Apple spent much money and time pushing the user experience concept. To have the unix folks push back and state that only CLI is the answer is -- NOT the answer. It is not how Apple should expect even sysadmins to need to go. And hey, I'm plenty comfortable myself using CLI. But my customers should not have to come to me with every small change for feature sets that can easily be added to the GUI, either under the SA, the WGM, or elsewhere in the GUI toolset.
OSXS is not really a mature Webhosting server. It is a server that takes the bare bones of Apache, of older PHP tools (why not offer updated modules or ancillary modules for PHP5?) and mySQL tools (same question). Their own scripts cannot properly or reliably migrate a 10.4 installation with Apache 1.3 to Apache 2.x in 10.5. Even the error logs are too obscure to offer much assistance tracking down the actual failures when they occur. Same has already been said of the DNS module.
I'm trying to stay in bounds here in my critique -- as an enterprise server, OSXS is coming along. It has a lot of maturation to undergo in the 'web' realm, as it does in collaborative sharing (iCal/contacts/etc.). Let's hope by continuing to purchase and deploy it, we can make enough of an impact that Apple grows the product accordingly and doesn't abandon it as they did the Xraid stagnation.

  • Why won't time machine give me access to backups?

My Macbook Pro wasn't working so I took it to an Apple store and they said the file system was corrupted and it needed be reformatted.  I had a time machine backup and they said I should restore the files from it but not the complete restore or I would just recreate the problem.
So, my laptop is now up and running and it works again.  But I can't get access to my old files.  ACK!!!
The time machine backups are stored on an almost brand new "WD My Passport" external drive.  I mounted the drive, went to time machine and selected "browse other backup disks".  My old backup is there and I can select it.  Then I zip into the Star Wars interface and...nothing happens.  No backups ever show up as available.  It just sits there and nothing happens when I click on the bar to the right or the arrows or any of the windows in the background.  Nothing.
I know backups are there on the disk because there is a huge amount of disk space taken up in the partion with this backup and b/c I can "show package contents" in the finder and see gobs of files with in the "bands" folder (with meaningless names like "1a1c").  Also, I think the WD backup drive is fine b/c I can add, delete and access files from a separate (non-backup) partion on the disk.  Also, I used disk utility to verify and repair all partions on the disk and they said OK.
I need these files!  It's all my pictures, music and lots of important documents.  What the heck!?!?!

Halbey, I understand your frustration. In the past couple of years a lot of terms updates have seemed invasive of privacy and software updates have seemed counter-intuitive. Because I don't simply blindly accept what's put in front of me, I don't enjoy "being a Mac" too much anymore either. Several years ago Apple's focus shifted from user experience to stock price, from creativity to mobile gaming, and the Mac experience began to die.
As Apple grows, it is turning into the very monster it once provided an alternative to.
iTunes has become what Internet Explorer used to be: a once great program now weighted down with years of patches and misdirection. Unfortunately Apple has made this bloated old patient both the cornerstone and connecting tissue of virtually every user function.
The reason we can't install previous versions is likely something to do with the terms of service that we're forced to agree to before installation. Remember that huge page of legal mumbo-jumbo? It's likely that some of the terms of service can no longer be supported by the old software.

  • HT2736 Why Gifting Playlists is NO LONGER an Option?!?

We used to be able to gift playlists--but not since iTunes 11 released.  Why? This feature was brilliant and led me to spend much more.  I imagine it is just one of the many concessions Apple has to make with the studios, but why don't they say so.  The silence makes me feel like Apple is parenting me.  Once again, it seems that the more successful Apple grows, the more out-of-touch they become.  At the very least offer an explanation--please.  From my position--the apple smells rotten.

Yes, the Metro version has been removed.

  • Advice on Bootcamp

I am about to install XP on my Mac, but I'm having last minute second thoughts. Can someoe please tell me if I install XP if I am opening my Imac up to all the virus's that windows can get? Would I require anti virus software for XP, or will it natively be protected as it is running on Apple hardware?
I am also concerned about future virus's that will corrupt my OSX platform through XP?
    Can someone please advise.
    Many Thanks.
    Leecho

There is no actual interaction between the two operating systems as they run different code and you boot each individually. Windows XP can't see the Mac OS X partition (as far as I am aware, yet), though Mac OS X can read the Windows XP partition, and (if it is less than 32gb and you have made it a FAT32 drive) write to it too.
Mac OS X will probably not be infected by a virus written specifically to attack Windows - the majority of virii tend to be written in Windows executable code, and it does not matter that they share the same hardware as Mac OSX cannot natively run Windows executable code.
On the point regarding iMac native hardware protection - there is no full hardware solution for virus protection, even in Macs, though there might be some protective 'firmware' that helps prevent things like boot virii etc.
However, as Intel hardware will (eventually) make Macs cheaper and Apple grows in market share, 'evil' virus creators might start to target OS X, possibly by creating 'smart' virii that takes advantage of Boot Camped Macs or that can attack both OS X and Windows XP.
Thankfully OS X, running on its UNIX foundation, has better in built security and robustness by default over Windows XP, and less security leaks... but there are always risks.
What might be more worrying are Windows based virii that are coded to attack hardware and do something like trash your hard drive, overwork your processor or zap your memory, which might affect Mac OS X and render your hardware unusable - but this is a worst case scenario and these virii are few and far between.
I've seen lots of reports of people getting 'spyware' and 'adware' as soon as they have set up XP on their Macs. I would recommend that before you install anything or connect to the internet make sure you have a virus checker and firewall running, and immediately get the latest security updates via Windows Update. Use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, and don't install anything unless you know its from an okay source!
I use AVG Free Edition virus checker from GriSoft (avoid Norton - its a horrendous resource hog) and Windows XP's in-built firewall and I've never had any problems... in fact, in the 8 years I've been using Windows I've only ever got one minor virus, one Outlook Express worm and a few adwares after not reading the small print when installing adware sponsored software. You just need to take care really.

  • How are other Apple users managing their ever growing iPhoto library's?

I have an iPhoto library that goes back quite a few years.  I have in excess of 10,000 pictures in iPhoto that add up over 30gigs of pictures.  I use an external hard drive to run time capsule to back up my computer.  I have a few questions and was wondering if this makes sense beside running time capsule:
    (1) Was thinking about getting another external hard drive and exporting all my pictures by year into folders outside of iPhoto.
    (2) Was also thinking of then uploading these pictures to flick to have them stored in a "cloud".
    (3) Don't really understand iCloud for backing up large quantities of photos and it seems silly to pay for something that I can get for free.
Any input from others managing large iPhoto databases would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

10k isn't large, really. I have a 35k library on iPhoto and we've seen reports on here from people with more than 200k pics. iPhoto is good for 250,000 images in any one Library.
    (1) Was thinking about getting another external hard drive and exporting all my pictures by year into folders outside of iPhoto.
What does this achieve? You lose all the organisation of iPhoto, you have to choose between the Originals and you edited versions and so on. Why not back up the Library to this disk? Multiple back ups are valuable too:
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.
    (2) Was also thinking of then uploading these pictures to flick to have them stored in a "cloud".
Storing in the cloud is a good idea. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
So be very careful that whatever you choose will actually accept all your photos and in full quality.
    (3) Don't really understand iCloud for backing up large quantities of photos and it seems silly to pay for something that I can get for free.
iCloud offers no such service. There is no way to back up photos on iCloud at all.

  • A Family Apple ID issue nobody seems to be talking about.

I've read all the threads about multiple Apple ID's and sharing an iTunes account within a family in the new ios5 world with iCloud.  But there's another issue I don't think Apple is considering.
Kids grow up.  And when they do, you want them to pay for their own iTunes, etc!  My younger son still uses my iTunes apple ID, but a couple years ago, my older one made a new one with a new ID as soon as he was able to have his own credit card.  That means he has TWO iTunes ID's, that together, with combined purchases, make up his music library.
Pre-iOS5 it has not been an issue.  His computer is authorized to play songs from both accounts.  But what about when he goes to iOS5 and Lion and iCloud?  He will no longer be able to have his library all together in one place. This means burning thousands of songs, losing the name of the artist/song, in the process, or... I don't know what.
Sooner or later, I want my younger son to have his own credit card and buy HIS own songs/apps.  But the only way his entire library can be together in the cloud is if I keep paying for them on MY account.
Please make a fix for this, Apple. Let us have a family account and associated family member accounts that allow for kids growing up!  Am I missing something?

    ddizzd,
You're not addressing Apple here, only other users just like yourself.  You're just wasting your time and breath on this forum.  You need to post here:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

  • Why is my Apple ID being locked out every time I go to use it?  I haven't even attempted to log in for about 4 or 5 days, but today on my first attempt to do so, it said my account had been locked for security reasons.  This is the third time.

I only sign in to iTunes' store about once a week or so.  But during each of my last 3 attempts (on different days, several days apart) on my first attempt to enter my password and hit submit, I am immediately told that my Apple account has been locked for security reasons and it wants to take me to a page to reset my 'forgotten' password.  I am using the CORRECT password.
Perhaps someone else is trying to break into my account or is mis-entering theirs but my account should not be getting locked like this.  It is very frustrating to have to go through the reset password procedure each and every time I want to go into the store.  It seems to me that Apple really doesn't want me to buy any more apps from them as they keep refusing me entry into my own account, each and every time I have tried to use it, for the past few weeks.  I am not their best customer, but they aren't giving me much of a welcome invitation to become one, if I'm going to be treated like this.
I just bought my iPhone 4 less than 2 months ago.  I paid extra money to upgrade early, just to get this phone because it was so highly recommended by everyone I spoke with in different stores (BestBuy and Verizon).  I even bought the 2 year upgrade to my Apple services in case I needed to ever call them, and so far I haven't had to, yet.  But I definitely will call them if this isn't straightened out.
It looks like this other user could be tracked and an email could be sent to them from Apple to let them know what they are doing - trying to sign into the wrong account, and are locking somebody else out of their own account because of their error....and to remind them of their correct information or how to get it and to write it down or save it somewhere so they don't keep on doing this.
I have seen literally DOZENS of other people in these discussions with exactly the same issue that I'm having so it is NOT an isolated incident, and it seems to be a growing problem as Apple's sales and user base continues to grow, so this problem is seriously needing to be addressed in some way, and soon, before they start losing new customers because of it.  If I was still within my original 14 day return period with this phone, I would definitely be returning it and buying an Android model because of how frustrating this is to me.  If my bank was doing this to me, I'd have already switched banks by now if they hadn't fixed it - just to give an example of how I feel about this.

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa

  • Home Sharing will not work with my Windows 8 64bit with new itunes.  All of my Apple TVs will not see my library and my iphones will not function with the "Remote" App.  They all did before.  Only thing that has changed is new PC/itunes.  Any Ideas?

Installed a new Windows PC on my home network.  PC is Windows 8/64bit. with latest version of itunes 11.1.4.62 for 64bit.  My itunes works, but I can not get Home Sharing to function now.  None of my Apple TV's can see my computer library and prompt me to turn it on.  All of my iphones, pods, pad, can not use the "Remote" app.  When you prompt your phone in Remote App to "add library" and you get the code....iTunes doesnt give you the remote screen where you can enter the code.  I have reloaded iTunes, reset my router, updated all devices.  You can turn on "Home Sharing" on iTunes, but then it closes and doesnt seem to link my devices like it use to.  Also, when the new version of iTunes is up on my PC, you can see the other devices to AirPlay to like you could before.  However, I can send items from my iphone to stream to an Apple TV, I just cant link them all like I could before and control the music playing to multiple Apple TV.  Growing fustrated.  Any ideas, would be helpful.

    Cunning1_
You are a legend!!  I have spent countless hours uninstalling, reinstalling itunes, playing with firewall settings, reading articles on this problem!!  I only have to un-sync my iphone 5 and then the airplay icon magically appeared!!!  Maybe I have too many devices syncing via wi-fi, or maybe it is the Iphone syncing??
Whatever - one step and now I can enjoy my music through my house again!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

Yup, updated my Apple TV and got sky news and a couple of other new apps I will never use. I am growing increasingly fed up with looking at all the good stuff there is on offer in America and nothing in the UK..... I know I shouldn't look :)
And it's not just Apple I suppose, checking out the apple and Microsoft US movie stores and they have a much better selection. Wish we all had the willpower to stop giving these companies money until they fulfil customer needs...
Ok rant over, I've been building up to that since I found all the films I love on the US site and can't get them here :(

  • New to Apple have some questions.

Im looking into getting a portable music device with a large capacity. So far the Ipod Classic is the best as far as price goes but i had a few more questions about its performance and such.
First and for most Ive heard lots of people complain their Ipod broke down once they got it home or shortly there after, or they had any of a long list of troubles with the software. are these common issues or just the few speaking for the many?
Also my friends and i swap music a lot so right now my collection is only at 10 gigs but im expecting it to grow quite rapidly, can i load all of the stuff i already have into Itunes or will i have to buy new songs from Itunes? ive never had that bit explained fully too me before. How does the Apple brand hold up to some of the other makers of large capacity mp3 players such as Zune and Creative Zen? And lastly are there any other issues i should be aware of as a newcomer to ipods? Thanks to all that can help answer my questions and give me a bit of advice.

are these common issues or just the few speaking for the many?
There are tens of millions of iPod owners. These are just a few vocal users who've been unlucky enough to receive a faulty device. Same goes for any electronic device - out of tens of millions of devices made, there's always a tiny chance one may have manufacturing defects - but the chances of getting one are miniscule.
I've upgraded through 4 various iPod models over the years, and never had a problem with any of them. My old iPods are still in use by the people who I passed them onto. I've also bought a few iPods as gifts, and they're still going strong too.
Also my friends and i swap music a lot
Well, that's illegal as you don't own the copyright to the music to share it, so you probably shouldn't broadcast that fact!
can i load all of the stuff i already have into Itunes
    Yes.
How does the Apple brand hold up to some of the other makers of large capacity mp3 players such as Zune and Creative Zen?
Well, I think the popularity of the iPod should speak for itself. If it wasn't a good product it would not have become so successful. iPods consistently get very high review scores.
As you've only got 10gb of music at the moment, why not get a 32 or 64gb iPod touch? There'll be plenty of space for your music library to grow into, plus you get the best touchscreen mobile internet, email, wi-fi device on the planet. Everyone raves about the iPod touch - just Google for some reviews.

  • How do i get apple support to help? I have Ipad Issues, (I Own Iphones,Ipads,Ipods 3 of each for myself and kids) also Nanos, shuffles, appletv,**** man i got jus about all apple products. 3 of each

I have a disabled Ipad, niece tried to get one it, but disabled it, its been so long I forgot PW now,  I've been trying to get I touch with Apple support for that last couple months with no success, but today for the first time in what seems like a millions million years, they responded, and they said to open or tap button below to test... lmao, how am I supposed to tap the button when I cant even get into my ipad, lol, grow a brain.
I had come to this site last month sometime, and asked the same questions, how do I restore my ipad? when I connect it to the laptop or iTunes, it says to turn off find ipad, someone from this site guided me to delete this option from icloud but it didn't work, I removed find ipad from the icloud, but it still says that or to remove it, I did, now what? what can I try? I've tried turning to Apple... They seem to not care about my problem, or haven't even tried to help. until today. but lol as stated above, I cant get into my ipad to tap button, if I can I wouldn't bother with this.
I bought the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, man I LOVE IT.... I Should switch oer to Samsung instead... at least, after I got my new cell, and when I tried to contact Samsung support to ask questions they responded with 5 miutes.

how am I supposed to use my ipad to go to setting on icloud? when I can't get into the ipad. here's a pic, look at what it say to use (ipad).. I CAN"T

  • Suggestion to Apple: Animated GIF's in mail.

[Note: I would prefer to not hear one response from an apple user stating "animated gifs are ugly I'm glad it doesn't work." I too hate them, but read on...]
I recently helped a family of PC users switch to a Pentium iMac. I do their tech support and this has made my life SO much easier
The wife loves sending stupid little animated gifs back and forth to her friends... it's not for us to judge if they're ugly or annoying, they like them. Period.
I am so ashamed to have to go to her when I return her computer today and say "I'm sorry, this awesome and capable computer I have set you up with is unable to play back simple Animated GIF's.
I trust in Apple... playing back an animated gif should NOT be a major security threat. Make it work. Of course I could switch her back to Thunderbird but then that breaks her Address Book as well.

If her friends are using Outlook Express, then it should work. Here is an excerpt from:
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-19275.html
    a) Apple Mail can embed animated Gifs in Mime Format Mails, but it doesn't show them animated itself! This means if you send such a Mail to a user with e. g. Outlook Express, he will see the Gif with it's animation, although Apple Mail didn't show it!
    b) Even more interesting is this: when a user with Outlook Express sends you an Mail with embeded animated Gif, Apple Mail also shows the animation! Why is this, you may ask? It's because Outlook Express sends the Mail as HTML with MIME Attachment and also does a URL "CID:" reference in the HTML code to the actual embeded animated Gif! Quite nifty!
    --- End Quote ---
You can read the site for more information.
The other option is to just use MS-Entourage.
Entourage can synchronize with Apple's Address Book. And, it's naturally going to have support built-in for Microsoft's methods.
As for making suggestions to Apple, you'll get better results by making the request to Apple directly.
They don't comb this discussion forum for ideas. And, tend to ignore what we say here.
So, go to their actual feedback page, and submit your request there:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
At least then you know someone at Apple will actually read it.
There's no guarantee that they'll implement your request. But, you'll have a better chance if you submit your requests there.
Like all requests, the more people that want it, the more likely it will be added. So, get all your friends to request the feature if you want it.
Obviously, if the request comes repeatedly from the same person, they'll probably grow tired of it, and quit reading your requests. But, if several distinctively different people ask for something, they are very likely to consider it.
    Hope this helps.

  • TIme Machine  backup grows too large during backup process

I have been using Time Machine without a problem for several months, backing up my imac - 500GB drive with 350g used. Recently TM failed because the backups had finally filled the external drive - 500GB USB. Since I did not need the older backups, I reformatted the external drive to start from scratch. Now TM tries to do an initial full backup but the size keeps growing as it is backing up, eventually becoming too large for the external drive and TM fails. It will report, say, 200G to back up, then it reaches that point and the "Backing up XXXGB of XXXGB" just keeps getting larger. I have tried excluding more than 100GB of files to get the backup set very small, but it still grows during the backup process. I have deleted plist and cache files as some discussions have suggested, but the same issue occurs each time. What is going on???

Here is the log for the last failure. As you see it indicates there is enough room 345g needed, 464G available, but then it fails. I can watch the backup progress, it reaches 345G and then keeps growing till it give out of disk space error. I don't know what "Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD" implies, maybe this is a clue?
No. It's sort of a warning, indicating that TM isn't sure what's changed on your internal HD since the previous backup, usually as a result of an abnormal shutdown. But since you just erased your TM disk, it's perfectly normal.

Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb

Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
Backup content size: 309.5 GB excluded items size: 22.3 GB for volume Macintosh HD
No pre-backup thinning needed: 345.01 GB requested (including padding), 464.53 GB available
This is a completely normal start to a backup. Just after that last message is when the actual copying begins. Apparently whatever's happening, no messages are being sent to the log, so this may not be an easy one to figure out.
First, let's use Disk Utility to confirm that the disk really is set up properly.
First, select the second line for your internal HD (usually named "Macintosh HD"). Towards the bottom, the Format should be +Mac OS Extended (Journaled),+ although it might be +Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).+
Next, select the line for your TM partition (indented, with the name). Towards the bottom, the Format must be the same as your internal HD (above). If it isn't, you must erase the partition (not necessarily the whole drive) and reformat it with Disk Utility.
Sometimes when TM formats a drive for you automatically, it sets it to +Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).+ Do not use this unless your internal HD is also case-sensitive. All drives being backed-up, and your TM volume, should be the same. TM may do backups this way, but you could be in for major problems trying to restore to a mis-matched drive.
Last, select the top line of the TM drive (with the make and size). Towards the bottom, the *Partition Map Scheme* should be GUID (preferred) or +Apple Partition Map+ for an Intel Mac. It must be +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac.
If any of this is incorrect, that's likely the source of the problem. See item #5 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum for instructions, then try again.
If it's all correct, perhaps there's something else in your logs.
Use the Console app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
When it starts, click +Show Log List+ in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your system.log and select it. Navigate to the +Starting standard backup+ message that you noted above, then see what follows that might indicate some sort of error, failure, termination, exit, etc. (many of the messages there are info for developers, etc.). If in doubt post (a reasonable amount of) the log here.

  • Iphone won't turn on past apple logo, can't restore. HELP

All of a sudden tonight, my iphone 4s restarted, but it only got to the apple logo screen, then restarted again.  It was doing that repeatedly every 10 seconds or so for the last few hours.  The only thing I could do was turn it off completely but only if it wasn't plugged in.  If I plugged it into a power source it kept restarting and I couldn't even turn it off.  But turning it off didn't do anything anyway because when I turned it on again it just continued doing the same restart cycle.  I tried a reset, which had no effect at all.  I tried to do a complete restore using itunes, several times.  It starts to restore but then I get a message "The iphone (iphone) could not be restored.  An unknown error occurred (9)."  I made sure itunes and OS X were up to date, restarted my computer, and tried again a few times with the same failed result.  And now the phone doesn't continually loop through the apple logo.  Instead, after the apple logo, it shows the connect-to-itunes screen (in order to do a restore, but like I said, that doesn't work) and stays on that screen for a minute until it turns off.  (But again, if I leave it plugged in, it doesn't stay off.  It keeps turning back on and it stays at the connect-to-itunes screen until I turn it off.)
So I don't know what options I have left.  As far as I can tell, I have a brick that lights up with an apple logo or itunes logo.
One thing that did happen earlier today that could be related: I tried to update my iphone (I believe I have 7.0.4 and it was updating to 7.0.6?) but something weird happened during the update (can't remember exactly) and I ended up having to restart my phone without it finishing the update.  It wouldn't let me update after that, which I didn't really care about, so I just left it with the ios version I had.  Then later in the evening this happened.
One other small thing to note (probably insignificant)-- When the phone kept going through the apple logo loop, right before the screen went black and it restarted, the apple logo would grow dim and there was sometimes a horizontal line across the screen, then it went to black.
If anybody has any ideas, please help!  It would be much appreciated.  I don't want to have to buy a new phone so soon.  Apple products are supposed to have a long life span!  And I've never jailbroken it or done anything out of the ordinary.

A lot of forums I've read said to put it into dfu mode or "connect to iTunes" to restore b
You want it in recovery mode, not DFU, which is used for hacking or on already hacked phones

Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
