Apple Mail Frustrations

My wife and I are pulling our hair out trying to operate within Apple Mail. We are recent switchers and for some reason, the Mail program is causing the most trouble. Below are a few of our problems:
1. Her Address Book decides to delete all of the entries. She loses everything except for the Apple card and her personal card. We must revert to a backup.
2. When people view her emails and they have extra question marks throughout the entire message that were not typed. I've read about this in the forums but I haven't found a definitive fix for it. I can't even find an Apple acknowledgement for it.
3. This is a big one - sending emails using iPhoto 6.
If she is in iPhoto and wants to send a picture, she chooses the picture and clicks the "Send via email" (or whatever the button is). It creates a new message in Apple Mail. The picture displays within the body if the email and she is able to scale it down using the functions within Apple Mail. She is able to add text to the body of the email, etc. All is good.
She sends the email to me at work. I use MS Outlook XP on a Windows machine. When I receive the email, the picture comes as an attachment and not within the body of the email. Also, the comments she added to the email as well as her signature appear as attachements with a "ATTxxxxxxx.txt" type of file name. There are about 4 of them. One has the email text, another has the same text only with font information within it like:
<fontfamily><param>Lucida Grande</param>
</fontfamily><fontfamily><param>Helvetica</param>
</fontfamily>
It's ugly!
Now, as a test, within Apple Mail, she creates a new email. She clicks the add attachment button and navigates to where the picture resides and attaches it. Again, it appears within the body of the email and she can scale it. She can also add text to the body, etc. She sends that to me at work again. This time, the picture displays within the body of the email as expected, her signature displays correctly within the email, there are no extra attachments or any "ATTxxxxxxx.txt" attachments.
Why are we having so many problems using Apple Mail? These little things are causing us the most problems. They are very frustrating. We just want to use the email program and send photos, etc without thinking about it. It shouldn't be this difficult.
I'm just tired of my wife calling me at work crying because she can't get email to work right, and her Address Book decides it delete all of the entries from her address book and she has to start over (or revert to a backup).
Thank you for listening and helping.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I have been performing the daily/weekly/monthly maintenance.
The address book losing data is somewhat of a less concern for me. I always have backups. I'm just trying to get a good setup for my wife so she can send any kind of email she needs to and have it display reliably on whichever platform/client the receipient happens to be on. Yes, most of her contacts are Windows users who are probably using Outlook or Outlook Express, but there are a few Mac users as well.
I have run a number of tests using my Outlook at work and various web-based clients (Gmail and the web interface to my POP email) and Outlook is definitely the odd ball of the group -- surprise.
Some emails will display with pictures as attachments while others display with the picture embedded in the email. There is also an issue when you can type text at the top of an email, the embed a picture in the middle and type more text below the picture. When Outlook displays it, the text at the top displays in the body of the email, the picture shows as an attachment, and the text typed below the picture also displays as an attachment with an ATTxxxxxxx.txt file name. The contents only shows what you typed below the picture.
There's something with the attachment and the way Outlook displays it that's causing the problem. I even have it more narrowed down that this....
If the email is RTF with some sort of formatting in the message (colored text, etc) the entire message will display correctly in Outlook. The text at the top displays correctly, the picture shows as an embedded image, and the text below the picture correctly. However, if the email is Plain Text, it shows the extra attachments as described above with the ATTxxxxxxx.txt files.
I have also been switching between Text Encodings to try and figure this out. I saw a number of posts saying to use UTF-8 encoding. I have sent test emails using both Automatic as well as UTF-8 and I get the same results. I have also tried "Windows Friendly Attachments" and depending of the email, it still displays incorrectly.
There is also something strange with sending emails using iPhoto rather than attaching a photo through Finder. The email "Content-Type" is different between the two and both display differently in Outlook. If you attach through iPhoto, you get the extra TXT attachments, no matter the message format. If you attach via the Finder, if the message is RTF with formatting, it will display correctly. Strange!!
There's definintely an opportunity for improvements here. Problem is, I have no idea where to start. Hopefully someone has this figured out and may have some ideas.
Thanks!

My Apple Mail is operating extremely slow. Incredibly frustrating. Slow to load/open messages, delayed when typing messages, painfully slow scrolling through messages. Please Help!

I have been using Apple TV since it came out. While Christmas shopping I saw a great new little Apple TV and thought what a great Christmas present, they are so small now. I bought 4 - yes Apple FOUR.
What I can now tell you is the new one does not compare to the old one in terms of speed. Firstly, when I rent a HD movie on my new Apple TV (tonight for example) the TIME it displays for the download to complete is over 4 hours. Yes, FOUR hours. It also seems that this new Apple TV wants to download the entire movie before I can watch, quite unlike the old apple TV. After 2 hours of downloading, it displayed an error and stopped the download. I then fire up my OLD Apple TV and within 3 minutes (I am not joking come to my house and check it out yourself!) the SAME movie. Even though I had to rent it AGAIN (more money down the drain). I have checked with the three family members I also bought a new apple TV for and they have the exact same issues.
Apple, can you please swap 4 NEW Apple TV's for 4 Old Series please?

  • Massive frustration with Apple Mail and POP accounts going offline

I love Apple mail. Best interface ever.
BUT... because of issues with Apple Mail, I've been forced to use Entourage.
I really want to use Apple Mail and hope someone here can help me with this.
I have two Yahoo business mail POP accounts that I need to have running for an online business I have. I keep Mail running all day and my .Mac IMAP account and a Comcast POP account stay up all the time.
But the two Yahoo accounts keep going offline. I get an Apple Mail message asking me to reenter my password. They won't stay up more than five minutes or so.
Over the course of a day, this is so irritating that, as I said, I've had to switch to Entourage, where the accounts stay connected all the time and work just fine.
I've scoured the forums here. Deleted .plists, added IP addresses, followed any suggestion that seemed plausible/ But no luck.
If Entourage works, Apple Mail, it seems to me, also should.
    Can anyone help????

Speaking as one forced to use Entourage at work I can with confidence say in my case that they are different products serving different markets with different needs.
Apple did not drop the ball - the server is asking for re-authentication of a POP client. Any POP client should behave the same way. Yes, the client could just provide the credentials again, but it is safer to reequire the user to respond to the request.
That the request happens frequently is a function of the interrelationship between the DHCP lease life, client, and the mail host's response to new information.
Who is providing your DHCP lease?

  • Gmail no longer working with Apple Mail?

In the lasts 24 hours, without making changes to hardware or software, Mail has quit retrieving mail from my gmail accounts.
While I never receive any sort of warning about passwords or other issue, I simply get this:
And the "activity" window just stays that way... for hours with no result.  The Connection Doctor window:
The Church Email account is an old one that is no longer active... I just haven't removed it from my list.  But the "verify username and password" message is consistent... Strangely enough, down the same window - the SMTP connection works just fine. I can sent  mail from all of my gmail accounts using Mail... Considering that the user name/password is the same for both sending and receiving mail.. SOMETHING is funky with Apple Mail.
Anybody have a guess what to check? This is frustrating.

Did you change any setting in Mail? Did you change your gmail account password? Did you activate 2-step verification on your gmail account?
If you haven't done anything from above, maybe problem is with your network... Did you try to turn off your router for few minutes and then turn ON again?
Did you install any 3rd party security apps on your Mac? Did you enable system firewall? Do you use any proxy servers? Do you use VPN?
    There might be more questions...

  • Why does Apple Mail window default to wrong monitor?

I have two 30" Apple monitors with a MacPro 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon running Mavericks. In previous systems I would have my Apple Mail open on the second monitor. Since Mavericks nothing I do will let Mail open anywhere but in its default position, which is upper left corner of main monitor. Very frustrating. I must manually move it every time I launch Mail. Any solutions out there?
fyi - iTunes window opens to the same position where I had closed it, which is on my second monitor where I want it.

I have this with Firefox once in a while. To get it back where I want it, I open FF and drag it to the display I want it on & maximize it. Then, I open iTunes on the display I DON'T want FF in, and maximize it. Open a few tabs and close the window. When I reopen it iTunes prevents FF from opening on the other display and it goes back to the secondary.
That may or may not work with Mail

I HAD two accounts because of this problem.  I completely removed the problem account from the Apple Mail client.  Guess what is happening??  That's right - Mail is still sending from the other account that no longer exists on my computer, and I have absolutely no idea how this is happening.  This is incredibly frustrating.  When a recipient chooses to reply to my message, quite often I won't get it now because it is going to the other account that has now been deleted from my system.  COME ON APPLE!!! WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THIS???

  • I can't cut and paste any images into apple mail

I have had my MacBook Pro for over three years now, without much trouble, but recently I've been unable to send images that I have cut and pasted into Apple mail. I can attach an image that I have saved in my photos and it will send but I can not send an image that I have cut and pasted from the internet.
I am using a gmail pop account and firefox as my primary browser. It took me a few times to figure this out as the image appears to be attached in my mail, but is removed when I send, such that if I have text and an image in an email the recipient receives only the text. Before I hit send I can see both the text and the image.
I have tried starting again in safe mode and repairing permissions. That has not helped. I can login to my gmail regularly and cut and paste images with no problem.
    This is exceptionally frustrating.

Hello.  In 2012 you answered a query about the following problem:
"I have had my MacBook Pro for over three years now, without much trouble, but recently I've been unable to send images that I have cut and pasted into Apple mail. I can attach an image that I have saved in my photos and it will send but I can not send an image that I have cut and pasted from the internet."
This problem started with me this morning and it does not happen when I open a test account.  The thread stops after you asked if it occurs in the test account, did you ever find a solution to this issue?  I am using mac mail 3.6 on system 10.5.8.
I hope you receive this, I have never posted in one of these forums.
    Thanks in advance,

  • How do I fix an Apple mail account that is "confused"

Last week I moved a mail account from one host provider to godaddy.
I updated the incoming and outgoing mail servers in Apple Mail and did a "Get Mail".
Two new messages came in so it appeared everything was fine, however I realized Mail
was not retrieving any other new messages.  Mail does not report any errors, just does
    not retrieve messages.
When I "Get Info" on the account I can see 75 unread messages under "All messages on POP server".
For some reason Mail will not retrieve them.
I can log into the account via webmail and confirmed that the password is correct, and that the account
    is working properly.
I have deleted the account in Apple Mail several times and recreated as POP and IMAP with the same
    result.
Apple Mail seems to have "memorized" the account even after I delete it, it acts as if some preference
has incorrect information about which messages have been downloaded?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Keith

Thank you for the suggestions BDAqua!
The new Smart Mailbox was unable to retrieve any new messages.
Something strange about Connection Doctor, at the top of the window it reports "Internet Connection Status:  "Mail was unable to connect to the internet, click the "Assist me..."  button for help diagnosing the problem."  (this report is false because the other two accounts work).   When I click Assist me as instructed Network Diagnostics reports "This computer's Internet connection appears to be operating normally. Are you sure you want to use Diagnostics?"
All other status lights are Green within Connection Doctor, it reports "Connection and login to server succeeded" with all three mail accounts and all three smtp servers.
In safe mode, Disk Utilities repaired some permissions, no disk repair was required.
After moving the Cache files, Envelope Index and rebooting, Mail went through the Message Import process but there was no change.
I remvoved MessageRules.plist and backup, still no change.
I'm not getting a password rejection, no rejection or error at all.
In Keychain access I deleted every entry having to do with mail accounts and servers.  I reentered passwords in Mail accounts and still no change.
I'm using no SSL and ports check out.
After all the above I'm still in the same situation, have not found a way to create a new account that is capable of retrieving from my main email box. Very frustrating, I can't seem to figure out a way to bypass the "hidden" library file that's corrupt.
It's curious that the setting in Accounts>Advanced>"Account Directory" there is a "choose" button but you can't click it.  I was hoping I could chose a new location to fix the problem.
    Thanks for all your suggestions,
    Keith

  • Apple Mail and Gmail IMAP

With the iPhone coming to Verizon soon, I'd like to move back to Apple Mail from Gmail, but still want to keep Gmail as my source because my domain is setup with Google Apps but mostly because of the unparalleled spam filtering Gmail has. My problem is that even though I've configured Apple Mail exactly as Google recommends (shown below), I still have some issues.
From the Mail menu, click Preferences > *Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors*
    Drafts:
Store draft messages on the server > *do NOT check*
    Sent:
Store sent messages on the server > *do NOT check*
    Junk:
Store junk messages on the server > checked
Delete junk messages when > Never
    Trash:
Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox > *do NOT check*
Store deleted messages on the server > *do NOT check*
I want to have true IMAP functionality here, but I'm not getting it. Sent messages work fine...if I send a message, it shows up in Apple Mail in the Sent folder and when I go to Gmail it is also in the Sent folder. BUT...when I delete a message in Apple Mail it goes to the Gmail *All Mail* folder (in Apple Mail and Gmail) and never shows up in the Gmail Trash on either Apple Mail or Gmail...where it should. I've tried changing the settings under *Apple Mail > Trash* but that doesn't fix the problem.
I realize some of you might be inclined to say "It's Google problem...ask there" but I'm hoping a Gmail user here might have had this same issue before. Even as a dedicated Apple person for many years, I still can't give up Gmail and their spam filtering that Apple Mail can't come close to. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks, Andy. I should have posted a closure statement on this thread as I finally figured everything out. The most frustrating thing is Google's own advice at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892# couldn't further from correct. After many hours of experimenting with settings, I finally came up with the correct ones. In fact, I'm in the process of writing an article about it since there is simply no definitive guidance on the web that I've been able to find in the time I've searched.
Your comments are on target...everything on the *Behaviors Tab* needs to be checked (excepts Notes) and the *Delete when* settings must be set to Never. But there are a few other things that must be done, including some changes on Gmail Settings before Mail and Gmail will be perfectly synchronous. I'll post the entire solution on this forum when I finish the graphics.

  • Apple Mail not downloading mail

Even after the latest so called fix for Mavericks my Apple Mail still does not automatically download my email from Gmail.  I have to go through old ones and delete something to prompt the download of the new ones to begin.  Its very frustrating having all my new email on my phone but if its something I wont to view on the computer I can't as its not there waiting for me. Mail that was sent 3 hours ago has only just downloaded into Apple Mail although I have had it on my phone and iPad for all this time.  If the latest fix was meant to fix this problem why does it still exist?

Try rebuilding each of your inbox's and see of that allows the download to proceed. Select the mailbox and then from the menu select Mailbox > Rebuild. Alternatively check to see if there is a message on the server that has an unknown sender. Delete it if that is the case and try downloading again.
Try disabling either one of the accounts (temporarily) and see if it is just one of them is causing the problem. Do that via Mail Preferences. Select Account and in the Advanced tab uncheck "enable this account". The account will disappear from the viewer window but the underlying account definition and details are not deleted so to make it visible again simply check "enable this account".

  • Apple Mail Search is acting strange

    Hello.
I have been having some major issue with Apple Mail (6.5) in its search function.
I have been a heavy user of Apple Mail (over 15,000 emails on the program- and archived every year) for many years, and never had this issue.
When I search for a key word it does not find it!  I noticed that this not to work on emails in my In Box or Sent Boxes (Gmail email POP).  If I move a specific email to a newly created folder On My Mac and then search, the keyword will be found in the email in that new folder- but never on the orignal Inbox or Sent Box!  Also, the search works fine for senders of emails (by name) if I search for them.
The issue is mainly in finding a key word in the content of an email and particurly in the In and Sent boxes!
I tried EVERYTHING I could find online from reindenxing the whole Macintosh HD, deleting Envelope Files... I even deleted Apple Mail and then reinstalled it from Mountain Lion DVD!  STILL same issue.
To test things, I exported Mailboxes to another Macbook Air I have (brand new) and then imported these mailboxes into the correct location (Inbox, Sent...etc), and the search there worked fine!
ANY IDEAS, as this is frustrating and I am seriously considering switching to new email client after all these years.
    Thanks,

The mail search uses Spotlight to find results, so your problem may be more of a corrupted Spotlight index. To recreate your Spotlight index, go to System Preferences->Spotlight, click the Privacy tab at the top, and add your Boot drive here (usually Macintosh HD). Close and re-open this preference page and then remove the Macintosh HD from the privacy tab.
Within about 30 seconds, you should notice the Spotlight magnifying glass icon in the top menu bar will say it is indexing, and it may take about 15+ minutes to complete. Hopefully that will return your missing search results in the Mail.app.

  • Apple Mail Still Will Not Work with Verizon

    Greetings to All:
    Sunday, March 24, 2013
I've been trying to get Apple Mail to work with Verizon email for some years without success. I read the boards and find that this is not an uncommon problem. I received the new server settings for Verizon email today and eagerly plugged them in thinking this would solve my problems with receiving Verizon email, but, alas, it did not. Microsoft Outlook does a dandy job of pulling in Verizon email, but Apple Mail cannot. It's ridiculous that I should have to jump over to another email app to open one email account. All of the settings have been checked and double checked and the machine rebooted as the instructions mandate.
I don't understand what the problem is with Apple Mail and Verizon email. Apple Mail pulls in just about every other email service without flaw. Does anybody out there have any insight into this?
    -Dr. John

I am beyond frustrated with this issue.  I've just spent 90 minutes on the phone with verizon support and it couldn't be fixed.  I was told to call Apple.  HAH!  "Please call during normal business hours."  Would anyone know what they are???!
I did NOT have trouble until I changed the servers, per Verizon's request. I am so happy I didn't futz aroudn with my iPad.

  • Why does apple mail keep running on my system, i never use it

My macbook pro runs Lion, the latest version.
For some reason, apple mail program starts up, and it is a program I have never used, nor do I plan to.
I made a trip into the store and they did a quit, but of course, that doesn't solve the problem.   No real
answer for why its starting, who/what starts it, and how to prevent it.
Each time its running I have to click 2-3 dialogue boxes before it will let me quit, and it prevents the machine
from going to sleep if its running and I'm not aware of it.
Apple told me they were using the mail program to synch between the iphone and the machine.   Although I did
install cloud, I do not use it.  My machine has so many problems, ever since I bought it, and I have had so many
trips to the apple store, without real explanations or solutions.   What has happened to the great produce we
knew and loved?    Complexity and the post-modern era are upon us.
I have logged 71 hours of tech support time on the iphone, so I no longer work on trying to solve that problem.
I actually work for a living and have no time for this.   The sad thing is I am in a position to recommend products
for my employer and some major new budgets in the health sector.  I loved my mac for years and years.. always
buying a mac, making arguments for macs when all around me had pc's, etc.    Now I am starting to doubt the mac.
I hope that by participating in the mac community there will be some simple answers, and I don't have to spend HOURS
of frustration for things that should not be a problem in the first place.    We bought apple one-one, but the website never
works, and although they told me to call to make the appointment, it is just the general number and there is 45 minutes
of scratchy music with someone who does not know how to make one-one appointments....
Sorry to ***** and moan here....       I'm sure I'm not the only one having these frustrations.

etresoft, I think you are being unnecessarily harsh to gloriastitz. She is frustrated and doesn't understand computers at the level you do. What she is experiencing is frustrating, so she is frustrated. I have been a help-desk professional for over 15 years now, and emotions are part of the business.
I know it has been over 6 months since gloriastitz posted her reply. I hope she got a useful answer, but I fear we have satisfactorily scared her away from seeking help.
So, the first best response to tell someone is that the problem they are experience is almost certainly fixable, but may require more information to solve. You tell them you understand their frustration (even if you personally don't experience frustration or don't understand why people my express frustration publicly about a problem that frustrates them). It's just good protocol.
Then you work with the person to break down the problem into steps. If you don't have a ready answer and don't think you might even know the answer with sufficient data, then back out and leave it to others to tackle.
I've been having a similar problem with my Mail program. The cause is still unclear to me after vieweing the logs and changing settings where I know them to be. There appears to be a setting that is not clearly placed in any of the typical UI locations for initiating the desired action for either a feed: or mailto: call.

I think you are. This is not a place to rant and complain. It will just encourage people to give you unhelpful responses. If you want to complain, go elsewhere. If you want help, ask for it.
For example, can you explain what those dialog boxes actually say? Regardless of who is starting Mail, it will not prevent your machine from sleeping.

  • Tidying Apple Mail-at my wits end...

I've literally been battling this scenario, on and off, for well over a week now, probably closer to two weeks. All I'm trying to do is save, then delete some emails. But I just cant seem to get it done. Here are some details...
At work, we're using Apple Mail as the front end to a Gmail Account. They're connected via IMAP. A couple of weeks ago, the boss man said his HD was nearly full and Mail was the main suspect. Yeah, I'll say! A 200GB Mail folder is a little excessive. So I decided that I would spear-head the clean-up efforts. We're a photography business. We send / receive a lot of emails and we have a ton of massive attachments all the time. The whole email "system", which pre-dates my involvement with the company, is so convoluted it's scary. I don't even know how many emails we're talking about. We'll over 40,000.
Here's my general tactic so far. I made a Smart Mailbox to show me everything from 2011, including Sent but not including Trash. This was to be my main filter. I made another Smart Mailbox, identical to this one, but I also had it reveal emails that specifically "Contain Attachments". I went into this Smart Mailbox and tried to select all and chose to Remove Attacments. This would eventually lock Mail up, I'd have to force quit and try again. I eventually sorted this on Size and started at the top and would select small clusters of emails and remove attachments. I did this long enough and often enough to eventually remove all the attachments. Although this is where an anomaly revealed itself. When I would bounce back over to the "all 2011" Smart Mailbox, some of those emails seemed to have attachments still. Huh? A lot of them still had attachments. I thought I'd just dumped these attachments? So I did another Select All, in the full 2011 Smart Mailbox and selected Remove attachments. This too choked things down to the point of needing to force quit Mail. Upon re-launching, one of the many times I needed to, Mail acted almost like it had been initialized and needed to be set up again. Not from scratch, but it did want to re-import 35K emails. I waited this out and eventually it seemed to come back to life. Although this is where Anomaly #2 came in. The IMAP account seemed okay. But I also have my own work email in Apple Mail too, a POP account. Instead of the 1,500 emails I should have had in my own inbox, there were essentially none. No drafts (should've been a dozen.) No Sents and about 6, very recent, emails in my inbox. So my account got toasted along the way! Great. This was days ago. I'm delirious from struggling this with for so long...
After nearly pulling all my hair out, I was finally able to archive all of 2011. The general process was to
    1.) Make 2011 Smart Mailbox
    2.) Remove Attachments
3.) Save as: Raw Message Source
    4.) Delete 2011 emails
This took our 200GB Mail folder down to around 60GB. Hooray! Though, now it was (is) time to try the same move with 2012.
I tried the exact procedure and found pretty much the same oddities: despite having "removed attachments" for the 2012-with-Attachments Smart Mailbox, when I'd move to the "Everything 2012" Smart Mailbox, there were still (large) attachments floating around inside. Again: huh? This stil does not make sense to me, but a some point I had already given up trying to make sense of a lot of this. But I did the same thing: stayed inside 2012 Everything and tried removing more attachments. I've been doing this crap for another week now as once Mail got relaunched, emails with supposedly removed attachments, were re-appearing with their attachments attached. Stil scratching my head on that one...
So now I'm at the point where I'm over it! I'm done trying to remove attachments. I'm simply trying to do a Save As, Raw Message Source, like before. I don't care how large the resulting mbox file may be. But the issue now is a ridiculous amount of waiting—again. When I reveal the Activity Window I'm seeing long, long waits in a few areas: "updating cache directory" and "fetching headers" to name a few. I'm trying the "Save As" right now, as I type and I'd say in the past hour, the status bar *may* have move .1 %—if that!!
What can I do? Do I just need to wait, what feels like is going to be a year, for this process to complete? What about my, essentially lost, emails. (When I log into gmail, via the web, I can see the emails "labeled" with MY address are still there. At least 1,000 of them.)
I can't express how frustrating this has become. I'm a photo editor. I'm supposed to be editing. But I'm technically savvy and have been using Macs for over a decade so these kinds of tasks also, by default, fall into my jurisdiction. I'm *just* trying to archive some emails. I had no idea it would take TWO SOLID weeks. And. I'm not even done. I'd be different if I spent two weeks to get it completed. I've spent two weeks and I'm not even half way done.
    I'm feeling so defeated.
Any words of wisdom or guidance at this point would be greatly appreciated. I can provide any kind of additional info that may be needed. The system that I'm trying this on is an iMac running 10.6.8. The bosses machine with the clogged HD is a white plastic MacBook running 10.6.8. He also has this IMAP/Gmail account up and running on our Mac Mini running 10.8.3. FWIW, my POP account is not installed on these latter two machines. I just took a look at the Mail folder on the Mini and it's at about 53GB. What can I do to get out of this straight jacket. What sort of tactics should I be employing, more regularly, to not end up in this torture room that I'm sitting in now...
    Thanks for listening!
That top bar, Saving 39027 messages, hasn't budged at all. It's been running for over an hour now...
The one beneath has only moved as far as shown, in the same time—over an hour. Ugh.

Hopefully, it's working. Slow and steady. [S L O W being the operative word.]
But 9 hours later it looks like the Save As process is about half done.
Another week and I might actually get this done.
