Apple Mail long russian filename attachment problem

Hi,
The problem is that Mail.app set incorrect filename for attachment. I have gmail account and set up Mail.app as IMAP client. Most attachments are correct, but sometimes they come with bad names. For example:
In  gmail account (web) everything is ok:
The problem is that Mail.app set another filename, set up KOI-8 and instead of having one name=".....", we have name*0, name*1, name*2
In gmail:

  • Has anyone experienced Apple Mail flattening .PSD file attachment when sending?

One of my students encountered the case when Apple Mail flattens .PSD file when sending an attachment.
Running latest Mac OS X 10.6.2 (10C540) Mail Version 4.2 (1077). Multi layered .PSD file 120K was saved on desktop and than attached to email. None of the Adobe applications were running at that time. After it was sent, the attached file in Send mail folder was flattened and it size dropped to 88K.
The flattened file was sent to destination. Although we could not reproduce this problem on the other computers, it always happens on this particular machine.
When the problem was reported to Apple, the answer from engineers was more disturbing than the problem itself.
They said "... it is OK to flatten the file to reduce the size of attachment when sending. It is expected email behavior". I am very troubled by this attitude from Apple. Flattening the image discards information contained in individual layers. This is actually EDITING the contents of an attachment when sending it.
Has anyone experience this problem? Also, I would appreciate feedback on Apple's position that it is OK to edit attachments when sending them withou asking the user first.

    Marian,
I'm afraid you have missed the point. People send binary files via email all the time: images, video and music clips - in fact any attachment is a binary file. Underlying protocols are implementation details, a mail client may choose any form of encoding/encryption to send an attachment. However, the internet standard requires that an attached file is delivered exactly as it was sent, mail clients/servers are not allowed to take upon themselves to "optimize" attachments without the end user knowledge and permission. It creates a dangerous precedent. In this particular case my photography student had no way of knowing that for whatever reason his particular setup would flatten the image and ruin his homework.
Also, none of the protocols: FTP, SMTP or HTTP is inherently binary or MIME encoded, it depends on the settings and implementation ( Check RFC's)
I am not asking for a work around, which is trivial. I am simply trying find how serious is the problem. This is not a normal behavior, I know for certain only about two cases when it happens. With such a rare occurrence it seem to be a bug rather than a feature. That is why Apple reaction to is so surprising.

  • Apple Mail (Yahoo! POP) Account Problem

Hey everyone, i was told that in order to get Yahoo! to work with Apple Mail, you needed to upgrade it to Yahoo! Mail Plus, Which supports POP.
    I don't mind paying $20 for a year.
So when i try and enter my account on Mail, it still says it's a IMAP Account, not a POP. Which is odd, because i paid for YMP. Which supports POP.
I have no idea what i'm doing with this, i even had trouble with a regular account, always asking me to enter my password.
I need serious help with this, i wanna set my account to POP. Not IMAP.

I never heard that you need to pay for a Yahoo account in order for it to work in Mail. I never had that problem although mine is through ATT/ Yahoo. You just need the correct settings for any mail account when you set it up.
When you set up a new account, hold the option key down in the first screen when you hit continue. You will then have the option to add the type of account you want. You can choose POP from there.

  • Gmail no longer working with Apple Mail?

In the lasts 24 hours, without making changes to hardware or software, Mail has quit retrieving mail from my gmail accounts.
While I never receive any sort of warning about passwords or other issue, I simply get this:
And the "activity" window just stays that way... for hours with no result.  The Connection Doctor window:
The Church Email account is an old one that is no longer active... I just haven't removed it from my list.  But the "verify username and password" message is consistent... Strangely enough, down the same window - the SMTP connection works just fine. I can sent  mail from all of my gmail accounts using Mail... Considering that the user name/password is the same for both sending and receiving mail.. SOMETHING is funky with Apple Mail.
Anybody have a guess what to check? This is frustrating.

Did you change any setting in Mail? Did you change your gmail account password? Did you activate 2-step verification on your gmail account?
If you haven't done anything from above, maybe problem is with your network... Did you try to turn off your router for few minutes and then turn ON again?

  • Apple Mail no longer working with Gmail

    Hi,
I've been using Apple Mail for over a year now to coordinate multiple email addresses and it worked well until a few weeks ago when Gmail stopped working. I can add my account, the account loads, but the account is only visible if you go through the subfolders - it isn't visible under "Inbox". This defeats the purpose of using a client, since I'm not notified if I receive a message and to check I would have to flip back down to Gmail's subfolder to check that account and then flip back up to check my other accounts. I at first thought it was a problem with Apple Mail, but after wiping my computer and re-installing three times and upgrading to the new OS, I've decided it's a problem with my Gmail. I also can't get Gmail to work with Apple Mail clients on other computers. It works OK but not great with Thunderbird. Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Thank you!!

  • Thunderbird works fine, Apple Mail can't send (and other problems)

I have both Thunderbird and Mail setup exactly alike. Thunderbird can send mail just fine, every time, from any location. Mail was able to send messages a few times but for the last few days refuses to send anything.
    Here's the setup:
    Four smtp servers
    mail.bellsouth.net
    mailer.louisiana.edu
    smtp.coxmail.com
    smtp.central.cox.net
each is setup with password SSL authentication. Each works just fine on any other computer and even on this one with Thunderbird. Apple Mail is the only problem. (and yes - ALL SETTINGS ARE EXACTLY CORRECT)
NO - port 25 is NOT the issue - it works fine with other software on this computer and others - it is ONLY Apple Mail which can't manage to connect to the servers.
I use an AirPort extreme and have reset it repeatedly. (I can usually connect to an smtp after doing so but only until Mail attempts to send) I have tried a direct ethernet connection as well. Same results.
Mail refuses to connect to any smtp server. (it connects to the POP servers just fine) Occasionally, if I retype in the smtp password, or even delete it and turn off SSL, it will connect for a short time. (until I try to send a message)
    What's the deal?
I see others have similar problems, but all seem to be ISP related. In this case, I've controlled for everything I can think except Apple Mail.
A few other problems, maybe related or not:
Mail has NEVER saved any messages I have sent out in any type of 'sent' folder. Sometimes the folder appears, sometimes it doesn't, but it is always empty. And yes, the setting to 'delete messages in the sent folder' is set to NEVER. So they should all be there.
Additionally, the very FIRST note I created was saved in my Inbox as it should have been. NOT ONE single subsequent note has saved - I lost every one of them. (I also can't seem to find any means to manually save the note - how ridiculous)
Finally, though it isn't that important at the moment, when Mail can't manage to connect to an smtp server, it just sits there and tries to send forever. Sometimes it will tell me it failed and suggest another server, sometimes not. In all cases, there does not seem to be a "STOP" button or command to tell Mail to quit transmitting/receiving.
I'd really like to use this program since it integrates with iCal and Addressbook, but this is getting absurd.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Who is your isp?
If it is Cox they say on their site that you have to use only their smtp server.
Other than the mailer server (of which I have no info), I question the ssl setting.
Cox specifically say to not use ssl when setting up the outgoing server.
Bellsouth do not appear to require authentication and do not use ssl either.

"each is setup with password SSL authentication. Each works just fine on any other computer"
Are any of the other computers mac's?
You say that "it works fine with other software on this computer" - what is this other software that is using ssl and port 25 to connect to the smtp servers?
Port 25 is not used for ssl, use either 587 (standard) or in some cases 465 (non-standard).

  • I can't cut and paste any images into apple mail

I have had my MacBook Pro for over three years now, without much trouble, but recently I've been unable to send images that I have cut and pasted into Apple mail. I can attach an image that I have saved in my photos and it will send but I can not send an image that I have cut and pasted from the internet.
I am using a gmail pop account and firefox as my primary browser. It took me a few times to figure this out as the image appears to be attached in my mail, but is removed when I send, such that if I have text and an image in an email the recipient receives only the text. Before I hit send I can see both the text and the image.
I have tried starting again in safe mode and repairing permissions. That has not helped. I can login to my gmail regularly and cut and paste images with no problem.
    This is exceptionally frustrating.

Hello.  In 2012 you answered a query about the following problem:
"I have had my MacBook Pro for over three years now, without much trouble, but recently I've been unable to send images that I have cut and pasted into Apple mail. I can attach an image that I have saved in my photos and it will send but I can not send an image that I have cut and pasted from the internet."
This problem started with me this morning and it does not happen when I open a test account.  The thread stops after you asked if it occurs in the test account, did you ever find a solution to this issue?  I am using mac mail 3.6 on system 10.5.8.
I hope you receive this, I have never posted in one of these forums.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

  • Com.apple.mail.drag

    Hi all
I've been encountering an oddity and just took the time to look a bit more closely.
When an attachment is dragged from the body of a Mail message to the desktop. Then the user quits mail and logs out (multiple users environment) there is created a Rescued Items folder in the trash that contains a directory com.apple.mail.drag with the attachment inside.
Can anyone clarify what's going on here and how to prevent it ?
    OS is 10.4.8 Powermac G5
    Kind Regards Eric

    Hi Allan
Ta. I'll follow up the article. Only other problem is similar but not the same. It occurs with word files which are problematic because they will not delete from the trash. This has only started recently and I thought it was confined to the two intel imacs we bought but has extended to others. It seems related to word art that people have taken to using and I'm upgrading all the machines to Office 2004 so I'm hoping that one will just go away.
    Kind Regards
    Eric

  • Does anyone know the sys file path to Apple Mail draft-emails folder?

Does anyone know the system file path to Apple Mail draft-emails folder?
I want to stuff a bunch of files into that folder and have them appear in Apple Mail.
    Thanks

I think the problem is the fact that the emails are on a PPC G5 and in a completely different format that your main iMac (you're on Lion?). There is even a problem between SL and Lion; I just spent hours dragging individual mailboxes from a Lion machine to an SL machine. They wound up in the Import section. And, I just tried it: after you manually put the mailboxes in the appropriate spot and you've rebuilt each mailbox once it appears in Mail, I was able to drag an email from an Import mailbox to my Inbox. But, as I said that was between SL and Lion; don't know if that would work with 10.4 (?) and Lion.

  • Can't add Gmail (POP) accounts to Apple Mail

I noticed a day before the 10.5.7 update that my existing gmail accounts in Mail suddenly stopped retrieving mail, giving "a server not responding" message. So I delete the accounts and try to add again. And again, pop server not responding. This was all on 10.5.6 mind you, and yes all my settings are correct under google settings.
10.5.7 was released and I seen in the notes that there was a problem with gmail and Apple Mail in the past (no problems for me but I only used POP). So, like always, I repair disk permissions, download the full combo update and install. After install, like always, I repair disk permissions again before doing anything else.
Same thing. Can't add my POP gmail accounts to Apple Mail. POP server not responding

I have just experienced the same issue with a gmail account I setup in Mail when I bought my first Macbook 2 years ago. I've never had any problems with the gmail POP server before, until last night July 26th 09. Then suddenly a couple of minutes after successfully retrieving the emails as usual, it tried again and failed, asking for the password. I entered the password, but still came back saying POP server not responding.
I did some updates yesterday, but nothing more than the one for the pro apps. I'm completely up to date with all Leopard updates. Also I've double checked that all is working with my gmail account and settings; no change in settings or password were made.
Do I need to delete the account in Mail and recreate it from scratch, then, is that the only answer when this error seems to occur out of the blue?

  • Apple Mail duplicate messages

    Hi all,
For the past month or so, I have been getting duplicate messages for all incoming emails in a specific account when using Apple Mail. The account uses exchange. My gmail account does NOT have this problem in Apple Mail. I had this problem in Leopard, and it has continued despite upgrading to Snow Leopard.
I also installed a Time Capsule at around the same time the duplicates started appearing, and in other posts on this forum some have suggested the problem is with the Time Capsule. However, the same users that stated this (and said that Apple support was able to fix the problem) did not provide an answer about exactly how to fix this issue.
Since it appears that I am not alone in having this problem, perhaps it would be useful if somebody who found a solution via talking with Apple Support could share the solution here? Or any other suggestions?
    Thanks!

I would suggest that you post in the Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard > Mail and Address Book instead of this (Time Capsule) area.
