Apple photo services vs Smugmug

Does anyone have any views on whether Apple Photo Services does a better job with prints than Smugmug? How do they compare?
Thanks

If you use SmugMug's high-end service (Bay Photo) the photos quality is outstanding. For images where quality is the most important it's what I'd use… let's say that

  • Allow others to order iPhoto calendar via Apple Photos Services (or other)

I thought I saw this option somewhere, but I have an iPhoto calendar that I've printed through Apple Photo Services for myself. I now want to make that cal available for others to print without having to be involved in placing the order for them. Is that possible? Ideally, they would not even need a .mac account, but could order as a guest. If Apple does not offer this service, does anyone know of a short-run printer that will take the PDF and make a cal of it? Fed Ex/Kinko's does not have a lot of info on their site for that kind of thing. I will call them shortly.
    Thanks.

Thanks Terence. I assume the file is stored on the Apple server for 4 weeks (in which time it is removed), so I'm unclear why they can't assign it a unique number and allow me to send that number to my mom who can use it to order the cal. That does not seem impossible to me and could help Apple make more money on prints.

  • Problems with Apple Photo Services

I've been having problems with Apple's Photo Services. The first time, I'm pretty sure I didn't crop some pics correctly, but they were gracious enough to refund my $$. However, then I got serious about cropping in Aperture 2, and double-checked everything before submitting them. The 20 x 30s were fine, but the 16 x 20s were all screwed up. My $ was refunded for these, but I can't figure out whether the problem is mine, or in the transmission of the pics, or something that went wrong in the Photo Service. When I complain, they always send back a small pdf of what they claim they received, and it always matches what they printed. But that's not what I sent them.
Anyone else have these problems? Might it be a bug in Aperture 2?
    Sean

When I do a bulk export from Aperture 2, to anywhere, (flickr, Photoshelter, a set of files, gallery), randomly, (about 2 in thirty images are affected).
The effect is stretched non-centerd cropping. I think it only affects random cropped images. Not all cropped images, but I am not sure about non-cropped images. ...
The extra effort to go back to the export, after the fact, just to check up on the quality exported images is a waste of my time, but now made necessary.
The thing that bothers me the most is that selecting the images that have been exported with the problem and then re-exporting those images produces, for me, the export I originally expected without the errors.

  • Great service from Apple Photo Services Customer Support

This isn't a question, but I believe in giving credit where credit is due:
I have some friends who run a small dance school and made them a souvenir book of my photos from their most recent recital. Several parents who saw the book wanted to order copies, and I said I'd get more if they were willing to pay the actual cost. I ended up with nine requests, and told them the books should be ready by the end of this week.
With plenty of time, I transmitted my order about two weeks ago and specified standard delivery. When the books shipped, the notification email I got said they'd be delivered Monday. On Monday I received the standard small shipping box containing ONE book. The other eight copies were missing, even though FedEx tracking said the delivery was complete.
I emailed APSCS and got back an email from a support person named Duana. She (at least I assume it's a she) said that sometimes a multiple-book order would ship in two cartons, even though FedEx only assigns one tracking number. She said that if I hadn't received the rest of the books by the end of Tuesday, I should email her back. She said she would be on her "weekend" Wednesday and Thursday, but would watch for my response on Friday when she was back at work.
By the end of Tuesday, the missing books still hadn't arrived, so that evening I sent another email. I got a reply back from Duana saying my timing was good -- she was 15 minutes away from leaving for her weekend! She said she would re-place the order and try to have it expedited as much as possible.
Today (Thursday) I received a carton containing the replacement order of eight books, via FedEx Express Priority delivery. I had mentioned to Duana that the books were all for different people, so she also sent me another carton containing nine individual boxes, so that each person could have his/her book in its own box!
I know that in my own work, when people come to me with a request 15 minutes before I'm supposed to leave for the weekend, I'm sometimes tempted to let it slide. I'm glad Duana is a better service person than I am!
Her willingness to assume ownership of my problem and go the extra distance to resolve it promptly means that I'll be able to get everyone their books when I promised, and I really, really appreciate that.
The priority shipping was more expensive than what I had paid for, too, so I'm impressed that Apple gives its support people the latitude to spend a bit more money in order to satisfy a customer.

Wow, what a great experience! It's what we all expect of Customer Service and rarely get, so it is nice to know that Apple can do it.

  • Problem with photo services

I can,t get onto apple photo services. Got photo book back yesterday with one photo that had super imposed over another.
The original photo on my end was fine with no warning signs. All other photos and text was fine.
Other old photos were fine no probs.
How can I ensure this does not happen again when I have the same book reprinted.

Go to https://expresslane.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action. Select Apps & Software > Mac Apps > iLife for Mac > Photo Services and go on from there. Apple has been very good about working with customers with book printing problems.
    Best of luck.

  • Apple Printing Services in Australia

I am just wondering if Apple is going to bring the printing services to Australia at all. Is there somewhere where you can check to see if they are working on it or not?
It they aren't going to be bringing the printing services here, is there a way to export say a calendar or card project and send it to a professional printer to get done?

I guess not. Here is the offical response from Apple....

  • File sizes for Apple photo book service

If I use Apple print services to print a photo book, will they accept TIFF-16 bit photo files?

If you create a photo book and use 16-bit tiffs, these will be converted in the pdf file, that is sent to Apple, so it should not matter.
But you can try for yourself. Just create a dummy book, include some fo your 16-bit tiff, click "buy book" and on the next page select "Preview Book".
Then inspect the preview pdf-that will be created - when I tried this with a book that contained several gigantic 16-bit tiffs (each 200 MB) the resulting book had only 40 MB. So the tiffs had been compressed considerably.

  • What do I have to do to order a photo book from Portugal? There is no photo service in Portugal!!!

I'm living in Portugal and I have created a photo book with iPhoto 11 with all the instructions in Portuguese. When I was about to order it, I couln't finish my order because there no photo service in Portugal. I'm very disappointed !! There is any possibility to order it from Spain? What do I have to do?

I have requested a moderator move your thread from the MacBook Pro forum.   There is a separate iPhoto forum.  This is a user to user forum, thus no one can really guess Apple's policy here.   It may depend entirely on the internet provider's location that you are connected to, or it may depend on the iTunes Store settings or Mac App Store settings.  There is this support page for ordering albums.  One for the Spanish store, and one for the Portuguese store below:

  • Photo Services Problems

I'm wondering if anyone has the photo services phone number.
I'm having trouble with a book I ordered for Christmas. I ordered it the 1st, and it was sent to the wrong address. I called apple support and was told to e-mail the photo services people. So I went through that rig-a-ma-role, and they supposedly sent out another book, which was delivered to a wrong address again (and this time its a mystery address and they won't tell me where it is...) The book is being re-printed and sent out AGAIN, but the lady I've been e-mailing back and forth won't tell me where it is being sent the third time.
I'm befuddled and really disappointed in the service I've gotten from Apple. I wouldn't recommend the photo services to anyone since the support is so atrocious, and I think the next time I want a photo product I'll use shutterfly or one of the more reliable alternatives.
But does anyone have a phone number I can contact? Seriously, what do these people use to order lunch with? There MUST be some sort of support phone number for photo services

To my horror they only sent me 4 of the ten ordered and have no clue when the rest of my order will arrive, obviously they won't be xmas gifts.
My calenders have arrived in boxes of three - so you may very well have two more boses of three eadh arriving - what does the order history page - http://www.apple.com/support/photoservices/orderstatus/ - show you?
They need a PHONE support line, email doesn't cut it with a 24-hour response when there's an urgent issue. I called mac support and then talked to iphoto people who were at least able to get info over to the department faster than the support email.
Then I suggest you tell Apple your opinion - iPhoto Menu ==> Provide iPhoto feedback - telling the other users here will not accomplish anything

  • Setting aperture & apple printing services

    Hello
I am working in Aperture and plan to order a book (my first one !) from Apple printing services and still have questions about monitor calibration... I want to be sure I do the thing properly in order to get the right results :
    - Should I calibrate the monitor using the gamma 1,8 (mac) or gamma 2,2 (most commonly used) ? From what I read, experts and professionals recommends gamma 2,2 but will it works when ordering book from Apple when the mac world is using a 1,8 gamma (or is it taken into account automatically when ordering books ?)
    - Apart from choosing the calibrated profile in System Preferences / Monitors / colors is there anything else to do in Aperture to work on the picture and order a book which photos will look the same ? I presume it would be good to select a proofing profile like Adobe RGB (1998) to work on the photos ? Which one is best to use for ordering books from the apple printing service ?
    Thanks !

    Hello Kenneth,
    Thanks for the quick feedback
Indeed I had read this article before posting on the forum, and this one get me even more confused. Gamma 2,2 is recommended, but I am wandering if it is the right choice when ordering prints from Apple, when we know that Apple products are using gamma 1,8 ???
Concerning the proofing profile I found this article : http://www.apple.com/support/photoservices/preparation_tips/ : it is written that when ordering prints, "the image should be in RGB mode, not CMYK." So I would conclude that I should use a RGB setting for the Proofing profile, right ? The thing is I see 2 RGB profile type : Adobe RGB and sRGB. In that case which one to use for proofing in order to check my work before ordering the book ?
    Thanks !

  • Apple Print Services - Do not use from UK!! Better services elsewhere!

For all of you thinking of using Apple Print Services, think again! I wish I had read all the other posts on this before I ordered 5 prints online 1 month ago!
My first order was despatched but never received despite it being sent to my Central London work address - where I receive packages from all over the world on a daily basis.
After waiting over 10 days I informed Apple Print Services after spending 15 mins trying to find their email/contact details. They asked me to check my address details which I confirmed were correct. They duplicated the order and told me it was despatched.
Over 10 days later, still nothing despatched. I contacted Apple Print Services again. I was told that should check my address again, which I did and confirmed. I was told I couldn't have the order despatched again after 2 failed attempts and that I would get my money refunded (which I'm pleased about!)
Went onto Photobox on Friday night at 10pm and ordered the same 5 prints that I tried to order through Apple. Got into work this morning and all 5 prints are on my desk waiting for me.
Shame I went through the hassle for a month and got nothing out of it - just a warning for those who may be thinking of using Apple Print Services! Use http://www.photobox.co.uk/ instead!
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I love Photobox too, is there any way or are there any plans to integrate Photobox into iPhoto?
I'm nearly a 'switcher'... we use macs at work and I love them... there is just one thing stopping me and that is Picasa on PCs. I can upload my photos to virtually any online photo printer.

  • Online apple photo book purchase

I'm having trouble purchasing an apple photo book on line. I select "buy", then it "assembles" ok, but gets hung on "upload". I've tried to repeat the process in safe mode but no luck. Any advice?

Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.
You can then have the preview PDF printed by any service that can print form PDFs - googe will give you some options - one (simply found on Google - not tested nor recommended) is http://www.prestophoto.com/help/Apple+iPhoto+Book+Printing

  • How can I send an e-mail to Apple Customer Service?

Does anybody know how I can reach Apple Customer Service via e-mail?
Since they repeatedly delete the questions I post to this discussion platform, maybe I can communicate with them via e-mail.
If you are one of the Apple customer service people who are screening and deleting my posts, could you kindly send me an e-mail instead so we can start a communication.
Any help/hints would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, that email address is not Customer Service; it is for problems relating to your Apple Support Community account only and will therefore most likely not have the desired results.
Apple has not published an email address for customer service; the best way to contact them for that would be at their corporate address in Cupertino:

  • I don't want to know how to delete duplicate photos anymore. I would like to know why Apple have not put in delete duplicate option menu in iPhoto? Very curious. Is it to frustrate users, so they have to go out and buy another apple photo product?

Just want to know why Apple have not made an options menu to remove duplicate photos in iPhoto? I know about downloads you can purchase to delete Dups, but I'm very interested to find out from apple themselves as to why they left this out, to die without knowing this is like having viruses on a pc or waiting for the web page to pop up on windows...
    Option
    A. Is it to annoy the user, to frustrate them enough to go out there and buy another apple photo product?
    Or
    B. Is it to annoy the user, to frustrate them enough to commit suicide, to reduce population in the world?
Is there a third reason? Can someone help me, otherwise I'll have to go with option B.

We have three operational computers, one does not have iTunes on it.  Since Apple is saying I have more than 5 authorized computers, and I can't imagine what they are, I am afraid to deauthorize all my computers.  See what I mean?  I just wanted to ask the question about how I can find out WHICH computers Apple thinks I have authorized, so I can decide if it's safe to deauthorize them all or not.
You could have more 5 computers authorized if you ever, for example, reformatted a hard drive or replaced a hard drive without deauthorizing the computer first. Apple's system would see that as a different computer, even though you don't. There's nothing to be afraid of in deauthorizing everything and the reauthorizing what you actually have. You won't lose any data. Mistimp is correct, they can't tell you which computers are authorized.
