Apple's forgotten bug

I upgraded to Leopard some time ago with the secret hope that Apple would have fixed a bug which I found in Panther and Tiger. I was wrong !
Here is one of my earlier post (March 2007):
"Try a simple experiment in Tiger (10.4): in a Finder window with the icon view + snap to grid ON, select multiple grouped objects (e.g. 10-20) and move them to a different place in the same window.
They will not stay grouped but be sometimes dispersed in a random way or even move to places belonging to different grids.
Another experiment is to move a single object from one window into another one: this changes the grid of the second window from time to time.
This is extremely annoying when you want to keep the icons ordered.
This bug existed also in Panther.
I'm convinced it will exist in the next Mac OS X release. Do you bet ?"
I was right: the bug is still a "feature" of Leopard. It's even worst !
This starts being ridiculous.

Everybody, report preview problems to apple at:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
My biggest problem in preview 4.0 is it freezes while trying to view large images across four apple LCD's. Sometimes I see a gray screen.

I'm having the same buffering issues that other users are having when I try to stream a short video from my Iphone 4S to my Apple TV
Has anyone heard back from Apple on this bug ?

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

Beacause of apple's design bug and my uncarefully, I had reversed USIM'S backstop When I was bought it jusy for 5 hours yesterday in Japanese Softbank. And now I cann't get it out.
SO,I phoned the apple in today's noon, they told me went to softbank to resolve the problem. But when I went to the Sofwbank at 2 pm,They said they cannot repair it.but………… Softbank and Apple called eachother…….I cannot speak Japanese masterly. AND the final result was that I renew my new iphone with another 23000yin next week.
Beacause of iPonhe's design bug more,my uncarefully little and oher ,I lost 23000yin.
    Have any methods ?

Reading the instructions helps. Especially when you've just purchased an expensive piece of electronics.
Everyone gets excited and wants to play with their new toy, but you can't blame a company if you didn't read the instructions!!
With every phone there is two possible ways of installing the SIM, one correct, one incorrect. It is worth reading the instructions for this simple task.

  • Is Apple working on bug fixes for IOS 8.0.2? Wish I had NOT updated! Terrible on IPad2!

IS Apple working on bug fixes for IOS 8.0.2? It is terrible on IPad2, wish I had NOT updated!

Since "upgrading" to iOS8.x my IPad2 is so slow and buggy.  If the old hardware can't handle the new iOS, Apple should say so.

  • Does Apple know about bug in Timer that shows minutes but counts down seconds?

I have a couple of times changed my timer from a few minutes down past zero to 59 or so to time out about an hour.  But the timer, while still showing minutes count down seconds.  This image is a captured screen shot as it is counting down seconds.  But when I cancel the timer, I get which shows the 59 minutes I expected to get.  If I press Start at this point, it will count down seconds.  If I attempt to reproduce conditions, by going to 8 or 9 minutes, then canceling and going to 59 minutes, it works.  It may be that you have to run the timer down to alarm and then try the lower setting.

Does Apple know about bug in Timer that shows minutes but counts down seconds?
How would we know?  Call them and ask.

  • What are the options if one iPad was stolen last week and Apple created a bug which the burglar can turn off "Find My Phone"?

Last week, my gf was stolen and lost her iPad. I thought that everything was lost because "Find My Phone" didn't manage to track the iPad location so the police could do something.
Today, I ended up reading this article (http://9to5mac.com/2014/04/03/ios-7-bug-allows-anyone-to-disable-find-my-iphone- and-bypass-activation-lock-without-a-password/) which tells me that the iOS 7.1 presents a bug where someone can deactivate the "Find My Phone" function without the password.
What are the options here so I can rehave the stolen iPad, which Apple helped the burglar to keep it or even sell it?
    Appreciate your cooperation

Apple didn't "help the burgler" do anything. Did she have a passcode on the device? If so, the thief would not have been able to access any of the functions needed to disable Find My Phone. Also, if the device doesn't show up in iCloud's Find My Phone, it may be that it is simply turned off, or not connected to a network.

  • Solution to Gamma/Color Shift Problems with Apple Codecs - Adobe BUG

    Hi....
In AfterEffects when choosing an output module and that module be ProRes or 10 Bit Uncompressed,
when trying to color manage the file, there is a fine line called
'This Codec Does Not Support Output Profile'
You can find it int he Color Management Pane of the output module....
Funny thing is - That Profile Embedding IS support by:#
Apple's Compressor and THE CODEC 4444 AND UnCompressed
    Episodes Encoder
    See following Screen Shots:
    First one from Apple's Compressor...
Look at that little beautiful Color Option... Adobe did you MISS that one, perhaps...
You must have - because your APPS are NOT including that when encoding or should I say
    butchering movie files....
Here adobes famous but wrong dialog!!!!
And in this next screen shot you can easily see that adobe just strips the color profile out of the file...
AND THAT IS WHY THERE IS A COLOR SHIFT...........
left image = Apple's Compressor Encoding (Colors match of course) - Right Adobe's BRUTAL encoding (Colors WONT match...)
Now, in after effects you wont notice the shift. But ALL mac and PC users using quicktime to watch YOUR movies
are going to be looking at a movie with a different look than you thought it WOULD be... Courtesy of adobe ;-)
Jokes aside, Adobe.... It seems as if this one is on you to fix... Apple's Compressor has NO problems. And other encoders are also preserving those values.
Now... Let us assume that I encode in compressor... Looks are matching 100% that of the original source. All it takes to mess that up is ONE
roundtrip to after effects, premiere pro or Media Encoder. That is if I wanna maintain my initial choice of transcodec - in my case 4444 or 10bit Uncomp.
I could of course export to animation and then use compressor AGAIN to transcode to my format of choice... But in the long run I think that will become tedious.
Perhaps you could assign a few engineers on this one and in the future spend MORE time on living up to the name PRO(The most misused word in the software business) instead of wasting time generating new Application icons for your apps....
Thanks for reading and for a PROMPT and near-future BUG FIX

It's not really "embedding" anything, it merely sets the QT color space flags which have been there forever, but are mostly unused. Specific to ProRes it also toggles different internal optimizations in the encoding. That's also documented somewhere on the QT developer pages. I'm not sure I share your views otherwise. The point really is, that Apple developed ProRes just as much as a closed workflow within their products as Avid did with their CoDecs. Therefore the widespread use of the CoDecs is merely a byproduct of the use of the products, but not per se an intended workflow outside of those and, which is the more important part, also not explicable as a causal circumstance of the quality. If I may be so bold: What you are saying sounds like everyone would be using the Animation CoDec because it is so good, when the simple fact is that there are no decent free cross-platform alternatives and people are willing to accept limitations because of that. Don't get me wrong, ProRes is well designed and pretty robust, but the world doesn't come to an end without it and outside the Mac world it is difficult to deal with. Hell, it's even difficult to deal with between different versions of FCP occasionally...
    Mylenium
I have been testing codecs for a long long looooooong time. My criterion(s) are:
    1) Image Quality and that through multiple encoding generations and color grading
    THEEEN
a looooong way down the road
    2) Performance
BTW - I find that working with files less compressed and thus HUGE is much better. Hard drives are so cheap that one can build himself an 8 Disk RAID0 and that takes care of everything. In PPRO I can cut real time in FulRes with an uncompressed codec with the processors maxing at 3%  while the H264 editing sequence will stutter like a drunken wasp and maxing the CPUs at 63%.... Go figure...
ProRes 4444's impeccable imageQuality:performance ratio, is unbeaten.
Especially on H264 material like that of the Canon5D. You might say if the source is 4:2:0 why bother upping it to 4444... Well in theory perhaps
it is overkill. But rather than reading in theoretical white papers I conduct my own tests. And the end results are (REALITY) and way different from what theory states. TO anyone reading this. DONT believe ANYTHING you read about codec nor what I am saying.... DO YOUR OWN TESTING and judge for yourself. Problem is that you have to do 100's and 100's of transcodings with ONE source to various destinations with lost of grading and transcoding generation. THEN you have to keep track of your tests and THEN compare them. It takes WEEKs. But it is well worth while it. In my case... I start with a Canon5DMKII H264 movies. Transcode it to PRORES4444 then I do LOTS of compositing and re-encoding then lots of color grading etc etc etc. Then I export back to H264 - and the end result is STUNNING has NO artifacts and is adorable to look at. Not so with at least 6 other codecs claiming to be top-notch....
Sure Mylenium, the world would NOT end with PR4444 not in it... BUT the WORLD has ALREADY decided that it WANTED ProRes4444 in it. It is growing and that every day..........
Had the codec not been so darn excellent - it would NOT have been used. Period.

  • How do I alert Apple about a bug?

Greetings again. It is not at all clear how (or whether!) discussions on Apple Support Communities turn into bug reports that Apple might work on. For example, I started a thread at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3574736 that had a lot of "yes, I saw that bug too". We figured out a non-Apple workaround, but no one from Apple has chimed in and said "we see this and it is now in our bug tracking database".
Does someone from Apple read all threads here looking for bugs? If yes, do they tell the thread when a bug report is filed? If no, how does one turn a thread into a bug report?

They do. From the front page of the forums:

  • Apple TV Artwork bug?

Hi Folks, hope you all keeping well. Looking at some general discussion on the web is there or is anyone else experiencing an artwork "bug" with their Apple TV?  I have iTunes Match etc enabled and all the artists, albums etc all show up and will stream ok. However very little or no of the artwork is showing up, either matched or uploaded? Getting the standard music cleft symbol beside most artists and tracks. From what I can gather others experiencing similar problems and sine putting it down to a problem that needs to be fixed with software upgrade? Appreciate any feedback folks. N.b, Turing off match and re-enabling again on Apple TV dies not resolve. Bit of a pain more than anything else since we all live getting our artwork in place :-). Thanks folks

Sadly I just discovered this same issue with individual tv show artwork no longer displaying on my Apple TV2 after updating to 4.4.3 just a day and a half ago. I was so happy when (around 4.x) they finally had gotten Apple TV2 to display individual artwork for each of the tv shows I had applied it to... now its no longer working again. Sigh. And optical audio still keeps cutting out / dropping completely with both version 4.4.2 and 4.4.3. Hopefully BOTH of these issues can be fixed quickly with a new software update release.

  • How to tell Apple about the bugs

I do not think Apple read this community
Therefor EVERYONE here should report bugs to
    https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
Be sure it is a bug and not a question

You're right, Apple doesn't read the community. You can't post the feedback link too many times. Hopefully people will see your post and report the bugs, that's the only way they will be solved.

  • Has Apple acknowledged the bug in OS 10.4.8 that...

...has neutralized my new Intel-based MacBook's wireless capability? There are many others having the same problem yet no updates or fixes have come from Apple. I'd rather hear Steve Jobs tell us they've fixed this bug than hear about the iPhone. C'mon, Apple!!! Deal with the problem!
For the record, my MacBook connected wireless just fine until I updated to 10.4.8. Now the speed of my wireless connection at home is slower than dial-up (while my girlfriend's older Mac running an older OS has no problems connecting to our wireless modem) and I can't connect wireless at all on the road. Very frustrating!!!

Sorry to respond to my own post but I've finally fixed the problem. I took my Macbook to the local Apple store and, while the "genius" there said he'd never heard of a bug with 10.4.8 that affects an Intel Mac's Airport capability, he immediately suggested that I downgrade back to 10.4.7. Here's how to do it without erasing your hard drive and losing all your files:
    1. Start up your Mac from the OS X install disk that came with the computer. Mine came with OS 10.4.7. To do this, start up your mac, insert the system install disk, and then restart holding the "C" button down as the computer restarts.
    2. Select Language
    3. Click continue to get to the "Important Information" screen.
    4. Click continue and the Software License Agreement pops up.
    5. Click Agree
    6. The Destination window appears. Select the location where you want to make the install (most likely your hard drive).
    7. Click Options and the Installation Options Sheet appears.
    8. Select Archive and Install.
    9. Select the volume that already has OS X installed.
    10. Select "Preserve Users and Network Settings". IMPORTANT: if you do not select this option then your files will be erased. If you want to save the data on your hard drive, make sure you select this option.
    11. Click OK
    12. Click continue to begin the installation. It'll take 30-45 minutes and, if your computer came with two install disks, you'll need to be nearby to put in Disk 2 when prompted.
That should do it. My MacBook running OS 10.4.7 now has full wireless capability, just like it did before the disastrous upgrade to 10.4.8.
I hope this helps others having this same difficulty with their Intel Macs and OS 10.4.8. It's too bad Apple is unable to acknowledge they have a problem here.

  • Apple 7.03 bug

Apple just admitted to me that the new 7.03 update has bugs and it will force your phone into recovery mode so if you have not backed up your phone you're screwed.... It's unfortunate that the phone prompts you to update with new software but never reminds you to back up your device . Now speaking with a supervisor mallerie 877 416-4271 ext 60606 she is claiming that her rep lied to me and said there are no bugsb. Should we go with android

You need to be reminded to back up?
This has been very basic since the very first computer.

  • When will Apple address iOS bugs

At first I was having problems connecting go wifi but a network reset would suffice. Now my iPhone 4S cannot even scan for networks let alone connect.  In addition, I have to be charging three times with the Battery drain.  I have tried numerous so called fixes and have gotten nowhere. Will apple ever address these bugs in their New (very disappointing) new iOS or should I upgrade to an android?

Neither I, nor anyone else I know has had problems with iOS 6 on our iDevices.  There are no bugs as far as I'm concerned.
As far as switching to an Android, you need to do what you feel is best for you.  We're users here, not Apple.  We've no vested interest in your staying with Apple.

  • Apple - fix tese bugs for us

Hello, I've been having a few bug problems when it comes to Podcasters as have many without any feedback.
When I sync a specific podcast from, for instance "Apple keynotes" (From iTunes Podcast to my iPod Touch), and I want only the latest 5 på be synced to my iPod (I go into settings and fix so only the latest 5 new podcast will be synced), it doesn't always do that it's told, it syncs 3 or maybe 4.
When I want to remove the podcast in my iPod I take of the bar from Sync Podcast in settings, now, natuarlly no Podcast are to be synced to the iPod, but the Podcast still remain on my iPod anyway and when I sync it they don't go away.
It takes a day or more until I sync it again that it removes the podcast that shouldn't be there. And ocasionally it syns Podcast that I haven't even selected to be synced.
This causes a problem because I'm getting podcats in my ipod that I dont want and are only taking up space.I have the latest version of iTunes (8.0.2) and the 2.2 update for my iPod Touch (1st Generation)I
see no other possibility than that these are bugs considering everything else works fine. Apple, u need to fix these cause I'm not the only one havin this problem.

Click here and fill out the form.
