Apple TV vs. Netflicks

So I'm trying decide whether to get the apple tv or the netflicks movie streaming device.
The largest fact keeping me from going with the atv is that you must pay like 3.99 for each movie while netflicks offers a subscription starting at 8.99 a month for unlimited rentals. This meaning that after only 3 movie downloads you are spending more than the netflicks subscription. This is a major downfall for my family which watches anywhere from 6-10 movies a month.
Probably the second largest concern is the movie selection. I don't have a lot of knowledge either way but it seems like netflicks might have a larger collection of movies to chose from, or at least to rent.
Other than that I do like the fact that atv stores the movies on the device for later watching and has the ability to look at photos (we have a music server so the music feature is somewhat useless). I also think that the quality is better with atv since the movies aren't being streamed directly.
Hopefully someone has some other knowledge that might shed some light on this decision.

We rely on both ATV and Netflix (streaming to a Roku box and the 2-DVD plan). Frankly, we're using the Netflix device far more than Apple TV right now simply because there is a much better selection, and you simply can't beat the cost of the Netflix service. Also, we've got a 20Mbps/5Mbps internet service, so the quality of the Netflix video when streaming is virtually indistinguishable from a DVD.
We'll keep the ATV around for occasional movies that we can't get from Netflix, and also for streaming music over our stereo, but more often than not, we'll be using the Netflix service from here out.

My itunes allows me to download songs but is having difficulty identifying my new Ipod nano. It is not working efficiently enough to power my netflicks through apple tv. Can you help?

I have sorted it myself!!
Ipod is now in the top right corner, last time I clicked on it, it ejected it but by clicking on the actual ipod icon then it brings up your ipod. I restored it to factory settings and synced all my music and it now works again. Hope this can help anyone who ends up with the same problem.

Apple TV and Home Sharing "An error occurred loading this content"

Recently I moved and switched my homeshare library from my Mac to a Window8 PC. I'm running the same network equipent, but the bandwidth to the internet was less in the new place then the old one so I wanted to store more on the PC. My bandwidth to the internet is slow at times so I like to download to my PC and watch the shows on my appletv. I thought it might be a Windows 8 issue, but I powered up my Mac Pro (2008) again and it has the same problem. I thought it might be a WIFI issue so I ran network wires, same issue. The only new thing I can think that happened was the apple tvs recently took a SW update, I'm not sure what version they had before. (tend not too look at versions when things are working).
What I know:
All the shows play fine when I stream. (they can just take a 5-10m to start due to internet bandwidth, but they play fine).
Some shows play fine with homesharing (I have found no common thread between ones that do and don't).
All shows play fine on my PC in iTunes
Between my 2 AppleTvs (both running version 6.1) It is consistent which shows will play in home sharing and which will not. There have been a couple shows that will play on one but not the other and a couple shows that won't play one day but will the next day.
I have tried playing a show that will not play over and over for 10m. The status remains the same.
If the show has an option to resume playing or start from beginning. I'll be asked "Resume/Start over" first then be told "An error occurred loading this content"
The first time I try and play a show it takes 5-10 seconds to give me an error, repeat attempts typically take < 1 second to show the error.
Most shows on both my AppleTVs with home sharing return an error "An error occurred loading this content". I've tried running network wires, rebooting, holding menu and shift down to reboot, pulling power. I have examined the files that play versus ones that do not and they all appear to be in good working order. As an example. Episode 1, Season 2 of Big bang theroy plays fine, but Eposodes 2-5 don't, but then Episodes 6-8 do play ok. I find the same problem with Movies and Music Videos.
Setup Facts:
Asus Wireless Router is connected to my DSL modem into the Ausus router WAN port. The ASUS router creates a network 192.168.1.X my DSL has a 192.168.0.1 IP address.
On the AppleTV it has a valid IP address and I'm fairly confident the network is ok since I have NO issues streaming any shows from the internet via Music, TV shows, Movies, Hulu, Netflicks, etc.
PC is running Windows 8 and I've disabled all power reduction settings to be always ON. (Again some shows play fine, the ones that play seem to always play). Running itunes version 11.1.5.5
All the shows are ones I've downloaded iTunes. None of the shows are handbraked home videos.
AppleTV version 6.1 for both AppleTVs.
What I've tried:
Power Clearing Devices
Switching locations of Apple TV with different TVs
Trying Mac Pro and Windows 8 Home Shares
WiFi and networked
Changing HDMI Cables.
Every TV I have, 1: Sony (new), 1 LG (about 2 yers old), 1 Samsung (about 5 years old).
Any Adivce?

I have it working now.. BUT I still don't have 100% on both appleTVs. I'd guess it's closer to 99% (which is a huge improvement).
What I've done since:
First I verified that I had open on my firewall the correct ports. I use AVG Internet security so verified I had it setup ok. (this was after I tried a few times with it off). (this produced no improvement)

Might have been over kill, but I assigned both AppleTVs a fixed IP 192.168.0.200 and 201. by their MAC address on my router. I then added them to the whitelist in AVG Internet Security
I saved changes and rebooted my PC, AppleTVs and PCs
It still didn't work. (I described the above because when I tried removing them no shows played, so more an FYI if 100% of your shows don't play).
I then downloaded itunes (11.5) same version I was running.
I used 7-zip (winrar should work too) to unzip the file iTunes64Setup.exe into a folder iTunes64Setup. This is important, which I'll explain in the next steps.
I then ran the iTunes64Setup.exe and selected repair.
it then told me it could not find iTunes64.msi. which I gave it the directory iTunes64Setup that I had expanded the iTunes64Setup.exe into that directory. (Really apple??? This one anoyed me that it was in the EXE but I had to manually expand it and put it somewhere for you to refind )
It completed the setup and I rebooted my PCs and AppleTVs again.
I went to a show that was consistently not playing and it worked on both TVs. I'd say 99% are working fine now. What's special about the remaining shows I do not know. If the file was corrupt I would not expect to be able to play it on another appletv.
The few files that don't play:
I'm now convienced that my network is fine. with 99% playing ok. If it was an intermitent problem with the network I'd expect that re-attempts to play the shows would produce different outcomes.
What have I tried:
I've done a factory reinstall of the appleTV. (my advise is don't waste you time, it did nothing except eat up 30m of my time watching redownload and then entering passwords).
I've tried deleting the shows that don't play (which do play on my computer) and redownloading them (same outcome) (again, my advice would be don't waste your time). When I did a check of the files they redownloaded identically with only the creation dates different.
Open to move things to try. Any ideas anyone?

Apple TV no longer connects to Home Sharing

Frustrated and working on this issue for month - Apple TV no longer connects with Home Sharing! I have uninstalled all apple firmware and reinstalled from scratch ITunes, I have checked and unchecked Home Sharing and entered password dozens of times! I have reset all four apple TVs and I have unchecked/disabled IPV6 and it still does not work. all four Apple TVs have worked for years and somewhere along the way they just stopped.
I am running Windows 7 and the only thing that has changed in the path is the Time Warmer Arris router. Apple TV still connects to WiFi and Netflicks.

How do you you get sound to TV when showing a movie from Netflicks using HDMI

When I'm looking at a movie downloaded from Netflicks using the new HDMI cable from my MacBook Pro, the picture shows fine, but the sound stays with the computer. How do you get the sound from MacBook to HDTV?

Thanks for the response. Here's the answers to your questions. I have a new MacBook Pro with Retnia display (13") late 2012 model, so it's solid state, love the unit, maybe my 10th Mac/Apple. It comes with a HDMI outlet, so I bought a 6' HDMI 19 pin cable. The TV is a new Vizio 39" that has a side mount HDMI imput plug. I tried it through this and through the main HDMI by removing the Comcast box. Both work the same, excellent HD projection, no sound. I even tried using a jack from the headphone outlet to the red and white sound imputs on the TV and that won't add sound. So that doesn't seem to be the solution. I ended up using an iPod portable sound system, but the whole thing is a lot of wires and junk to watch a movie. I thought maybe there is something I need to turn on first. I was just sure the sound should be carried on the HDMI cable and not need seperate output leads.

I had problems with my password for apple and I have fixed that but now my apple TV doesn't seem to work. Just a blank screen. How do I get it to come up with the screen with Netflicks, HBO to Go, etc?

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
    1.    Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    2.    Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    3.    Restart your router.
    4.    Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
    5.    Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

Need some help being able to stream movies. I use to be able to watch Netflicks - streaming. However, I now cannot. The message I get is: plug in failure. Can anyone give a tip on how to correct this?

I had the same problem. I checked with Netflix and they told me to uninstall and reinstall the silverlight? plug in. We went through several versions of this. Long story short, nothing worked, but it DID run just fine on other users on the same machine. a couple of months later, BAM it suddenly works perfectly again. Netflix blames Apple, Apple blames netflix... who knows...
Here's my advice: download the Silverlight or whatever it's called plugin and do the uninstall, then reinstall. If that works, great!
If not, make up a new user and see if netflix plays from that account. If so, you have a workaround that is tedious, but at least lets you watch your movies! Someday in the future,it might just start working again.

Apple Tv (2nd gen) No sound after update

I updated our Second gen apple tv last night with the latest update that came out yesterday. At first it crashed it showed the itunes log with the cable so I hooked it up to the computer and let iTunes restor it (per the instruction here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4367). After the restor was done I hooked it back up and set up all the network settings again. I went to Netflicks and there was no sound. I tried one of my movies from my server no sound. I tried a song from the server no sound.
I did a bit of looking around and did a full factory reset on it, per the instructions I found. Still no sound.
I followed the instructions on the forums still no sound. I have unpluged the HDMI cable, Unpluged the power, done a rest and still no sound any idea what is going on here?
Is anyone else have issues after this new update?

Doing a restore puts all of the factory settings back in place. Have you checked your audio output settings? You may need to turn Dolby Digital ON (Or Auto), or OFF depending on what the ATV is connected to.
I have one connected HDMI to a TV so Dolby Digital needs to be set to Off .
I have another connected to an audio receiver, so DD is set to Auto (which is On in this case) .

Apple TV with not recognize home sharing

Wi-fi Works correctly, but Ethernet connect wil not recognize "Home Sharing."
Ethenet is connect, but all other Ethenet function are workin, i.e. NetFlick and Radio Stations.
I have tried all of the obvious fixs, i.e. reboot Apple TV, reconnect internet, and many others none seem to work.
It worked with Microsoft 7, but this is a new computer and does not work with Microsoft 8.

so i tried the method Winston Churchill suggested.
This is what i did:
Start Terminal (this is a program found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, you can also get there by clicking on the desktop, select "Utilities" in the "Go" menu, then double click on "Terminal".)
Type exactly these commands into terminal:
networksetup -setv6off ethernet
(then hit enter)
networksetup -setv6off wi-fi
(then hit enter)
Then close Terminal, and restart your mac.
Viola!
Then close Terminal, and restart your mac.

Apple TV, net flicks works apple content does not

So, recently my Apple TV , last generation with updates, has decided to play NETFLICKS and HULU, and my music videos......But NO MOVIES, that I own....just get the everlasting spinning icon ......... any ideals .... anyone..... I have home sharing turned on .....

Apple TV stopping half way through movie. Got the "spinning wheel" then it said "unexpected error occurred". I can go back

Issue with Apple TV stopping have way through a movie purchased from iTunes. Says "unexpected error occurred" and will allow us to go back and view earlier parts of the movie but not to go forward from this point. Any suggestions?

Having a very similar problem here. Apple TV Rental movie 2/3 way through. Great movie, though we had major download speed probs initially. Trouble is it now keeps on saying "unexpected error, try again later" or somesuch, and has done for several hours. Rental period finishes tomorrow when we'll all be at work. Night-time here in Australia. Thought we might be able to finish it on my Mac at least. Nup. Can't play AppleTV rentals on your Mac! Family not happy! No, that is understating it. Family ^*&^ing furious. "Why did you waste money on that thing when we could have got it out on DVD, or Netflicks, or Easyflicks, or just pirated it, or.....". I guess you get the picture!

Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

...the usual 3 av (audio/video) leads...
DVI is video only so you only need one port... if you were hooking up audio and video you'd need three (1 for video - 2 for the left/right audio channels)
