Applets & ClassCastException problem

here is the problem...
I got test.java, an applet, which I can compile without any problem...(I'm using Sun ONE Studio 4)
but when I try to execute it, it says "Applet not initialized" and the following message appears in the outpout window :
java.lang.ClassCastException
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.createApplet(AppletPanel.java:567)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.runLoader(AppletPanel.java:496)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(AppletPanel.java:293)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:536)
the applet doesn't even go in the init() method
however, if I open test.html, which has the applet on the page, it loads without any problem...
I'd only like to know what this ClassCastException can be related to...

Is this as simple as not using the right base class for your applet? I don't know how much experience you have with applets... you may already have this correct, but if not...
These two lines (or something pretty close, and maybe not adjacent to each other) should appear in the source file of the applet that you are referencing in your web page:
import java.applet.Applet;
public class Test extends Applet {Your applet entrypoints are methods you should override in the Applet class.

  • Applet socket problem in client-server, urgent!

    Dear All:
    I have implemented a client server teamwork environment. I have managered to get the server running fine. The server is responsible for passing messages between clients and accessing Oracle database using JDBC. The client is a Java Applet. The code is like the following. The problem is when I try to register the client, the socket connection get java.security.AccessControlException: access denied(java.net.SocketPermission mugca.its.monash.edu.
    au resolve)
    However, I have written a Java application with the same socket connection method to connect to the same server, it connects to the server without any problem. Is it because of the applet security problem? How should I solve it? Very appreciate for any ideas.
    public class User extends java.applet.Applet implements ActionListener, ItemListener

    address = socket.getInetAddress();
    System.out.println("The hostname,address,hostaddress,localhost is:" + address.getHostName() + ";\n" +
    address.getAddress() + ";\n" +
    address.getHostAddress() + ";\n" +
    address.getLocalHost());
    catch(Exception e) {
    displayMessage("Error occured. See console");
    System.err.println(e);
                                  e.printStackTrace();
    }

    Hi, there:
    Thanks for the help. But I don't have to configure the security policy. Instead, inspired by a message in this forum, I simply upload the applet to the HTTP server (mugca.its.monash.edu.au) where my won server is running. Then the applet is download from the server and running fine in my local machine.

  • Applet running problem in ie 6.0 under Windows XP

    Applet running problem in ie 6.0 under Windows XP
    I have a PC running Iternet Explorer 6.0 running under Windows XP. I have developed an applet using JDK 1.3 which is running fine with applet viewer , but it is not running in ie. I have installed Netscape navigator and Opera 5. the applet is running fine in both of these browsers but somehow it is not running in IE.
    Later on I upgraded my JDK to 1.4. It also displays use Java2 (V1.4.1) for <applet> (requires restart) tck marked in Advance section under Tools-Options menu of IE.
    I have also tried and set various options in my Control Panels Java Plug-in but all in vain. I have searched the sites for this solution but no one answers specifically.
    I know its a small problem due to discarded JVM in IE under Windows XP but give me solution for that.
    Thanks in Advance

    I have an applet and a flash in two frames in a HTML page. The applet and the falsh app communicate through the Javascript code with in the HTML pages. The flash app does not work as it is supposed to when the applet is present in the Parent HTML page. When I removed the applet, the flash app seems to work ok. But the applcation that I am working needs both of them together. Plz suggest me a solution if you know of any flash and applet related problems.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Opening and closing a frame from an applet security problem

    can I open a frame or a window from an applet and close the frame by using
    System.exit(0) for the frame or will it throw a security problem.

    I am using system.exit(0) to exit the JVM.
    dispose()
    Releases all of the native screen resources used by this Window, its subcomponents, and all of its owned children. That is, the resources for these Components will be destroyed, any memory they consume will be returned to the OS, and they will be marked as undisplayable.
    If this frame have to be close and open again don't use dispose.
    there is no check whether a frame is active? what you can do is set the the new frame to null (frame = null) and also when you dispose it, this will let you know if the frame is active or not.

  • Need help with applet related problems

    First of all hello to everyone. I'm new to this forum. I usually can solve my problems google-ing around, but this time I just ran out of ideas.
    I'm trying to develop a jni applet that can run native code for performance. I used netbeans so far and the applet works great when run from within the ide. At some point a managed to make the applet run inside firefox and iexplore, however somehow i screwed something up and now i can't make it run anymore. I don't really know what i did but i think it may be related to these lines in the console since everything up until awt works fine in the applet:
    basic: JNLP2ClassLoader.findLibrary: Looking up native library: jawt.dll
    network: Looking up native library in: C:\Users\Gladiator\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\10\1082924a-7851bf5e-n\jawt.dll
    basic: Native library jawt.dll not found
    Ofc i may be wrong.
    This also my be a local problem because a friend of mine tried the applet himself and said it's working.
    All the jars are selfsigned.
    below i posted the console output in case you want to take a look. Also I am interested about the "try again.." messages that seem to pop over and over again.

    I am sorry for bold, i came here to ask for help. I used bold to differentiate output from my questions since i couldn't find tags.
    I already validated jnlp using JaNeLA and got only optimization suggestions.
    As I said in first post, this works for a friend of mine, so it's possible a local issue with my java or something ...
    Also i reinstalled jre/jdk 7.0, then uninstalled and installed latest jre/jdk 6.
    Hope I didn't leave a bad impression, i just want help.

  • Java 1.5_13 applet loading problem due to 'activate control' fix

    I updated my JRE to Java 1.5 revision 13, and it seems to introduce a new problem. In order to fix the "click here to activate this control" problem in internet explorer, I iterate the document model and set the outerHTML of the applet tag to the same outerHTML. This removes the annoying rectangle in IE. This also causes the applet to load and break down the first time the page is displayed, because IE removes the old applet instance and creates a new one when replacing the outerHTML. When this happens on the new Java JRE release, an exception is thrown to the user saying:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
         at sun.plugin.AppletViewer.loadJarFiles(Unknown Source)
         at sun.applet.AppletPanel.runLoader(Unknown Source)
         at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(Unknown Source)
         at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
    The applet loads correctly, but the message should not be displayed. Also, it only seems to happen sometimes (maybee because sometimes the applet does not yet start before IE runs the script to replace its contents)

    Does anyone know how to fix this new issue? Or does anyone know of a better way to solve the 'activate control' problem in IE that does not cause the reloading of this applet?
    Thanks.

    Hi!
    *1 -* Poor_Sitar_player's solution that i used.
    a - Build the applet's comented code into a div ...
    </div id='555>
    <!--
    <body>
    <applet name="EditoRTFa.class" id='editor' archive="../pages/expediente/Modelo/Editor/EditoRTFa.jar"
    code="br.gov.pa.tj.processo.expediente.casos.editor.EditoRTFa.class" width="750" height="550">
    </applet>
    <body>
    -->
    </div>
    b - After, insert a javascript the will remove the coments....
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var x = document.getElementById('555');
    var texto = x.innerHTML;
    texto = texto.replace('<!--','').replace('-->','');
    x.innerHTML = texto;
    <script type="text/javascript">
    *2 - Another solution*
    If you are using struts2 or your applet is inside a internal frame, is possible that the above solution will not work.
    So, the solution that i found was place the applet code in the main page, with width and heigh iguals "*0*" and style="float: left;" to hide the applet.
    This way, the applet will be load before you call the right page.
    That's all.

  • Applet display problem in 1.4.2_10

    I recently upgraded JRE from 1.4.2_07 to 1.4.2_10 and my applet page refresh got screwed up. Sometimes when the page with the applet is refreshed, the applet is not displayed. It is loaded for sure but not displayed.
    If we switch back to some window and come back to this page again, it shows up !!! or just hit enter on the address bar it shows up !!! ...
    Anyone facing the same problem? It would be great if someone could help me one this ...
    -arrow

    try dis one:
    http://v8doc.sas.com/sashtml/
    the option bar in the menu in the left frame disappears; but it shows up shortly when refreshing continously or back/forward on the browser rapidly - this sounds like your problem as well?
    It might have to do with the recent MS patches (released April 11th) that fix some issues within ActiveX; double clicking the script window then does the trick?

  • Java Applet Panel problems with CardLayout

    Hi, I have a problem a I have been stucked for 2 days.
    I created 3 Panels to use with CardLayout. I would switch between those 3 panels depending on user interaction. I have some textfields and text areas on the 2nd and 3rd Panel. On the 1st panel, I would like to use g.drawstring to write some stuff on that panel, but the words would be blocked off if it goes to where the components are on the other panels.

  • [APPLET][Heritage] Problem with classes

    Hi, I'm developping a simple JAVA Applet and I have a problem
    I have a class called LUIweb which is the main class. Here is a part of it.
    public class LUIweb extends JApplet implements Runnable {
    public void run() {
    DisplayMessage("JAVA rocks");
    public void DisplayMessage(String message){
    jtextArea.append(message);
    middlePanel.removeAll();
    middlePanel.add(textScrollPane, BorderLayout.CENTER);
    middlePanel.validate();
    middlePanel.repaint();
    It displays the message "JAVA rocks" in my JTextArea. But when another class from the same package calls DisplayMessage, nothing is displayed in my JTextArea
    public class Data_net extends LUIweb{
    public void Test(){
    DisplayMessage("NON");
    Have you got any idea to fix that?
    Thank you for you help

    OK,
    You are using a separate thread to update the gui. As swing is not multithread safe, this is not good. Anytime you want to change the gui, you must do it on the gui thread. This means without extra help, you should only change the gui from within a Listener, such as a MouseListener, KeyListener, etc, etc.
    In your case, you are updating the not from the gui thread (not from a Listener), and so you must ask the gui thread to do the work for you when it has time.
    This means you need to use SwingUtilities.invokeLater or SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait.
    Since the sequencing is important to you in your code, you should probably use invokeAndWait, such as
    public void run()
              SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait( new Runnable()
                     public void run() { DisplayMessage(Language.CONNECT_DB); }
              Data_net Donnee_net=new Data_net();
              SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait( new Runnable()
                     public void run() { DisplayMessage("Connecting to "+Donnee_net.GetHost()+
                                                       " with user "+Donnee_net.GetUser()+"...\n");
              Donnee_net.Test();

  • IE applet refresh problem

    I have a menu applet whose items are generated from a database query. The problem I'm having is that the applet will not refresh when the page is reloaded or the refresh button in ie is selected. Instead of the applet I just get the gray box. The java console is not displaying any errors or exceptions. The applet works perfectly in Netscape. I'm using IE 5.5. Does anyone know if there is a problem with the Mircrosoft VM (I know, leading question) that would cause this? This is a third party applet so unfortunately I can't modify the source.
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Unfortunately this is a third-party applet and so I can't modify the source code. I've tried explicitly calling the init() method from a javascript onLoad() function, but that doesn't seem to help (I've also tried calling the repaint() method).
    If the applet works in Netscape, I can only assume the discrepancy is in the Microsoft VM.

  • ClassCastException problem...

    Ok, here's my problem. The method in question, processFindBookTransaction, is supposed to search go into a binary search tree and find a "book" with a certain key. Here's the code for that method:
      private static Book processFindBookTransaction(Transaction aTransaction)
        Book aBook = (Book) library.findByKey(aTransaction.getISBN());
        if (aBook != null)
          System.out.println(aTransaction.getISBN() +
                             " found: " + aBook );
        else
          System.out.println(aTransaction.getISBN() +
                             " cannot be found");
        return aBook;
      }The problem is in the line reading:
    Book aBook = (Book) library.findByKey(aTransaction.getISBN());Here is the code for the method that is accessed in the binary search tree (library being the binary search tree object):
      public Object findByKey(Comparable aKey)
        Node currentNode = rootNode;
        Node parentNode = null;
        boolean found = false;
        while(!found && currentNode != null)
          if(aKey.compareTo(currentNode.getNodeKey()) < 0)
            parentNode = currentNode;
            currentNode = (Node)currentNode.getLeftChild();
          else
            if(aKey.compareTo(currentNode.getNodeKey()) > 0)
              parentNode = currentNode;
              currentNode = (Node) currentNode.getRightChild();
            else
              found = true;
              return currentNode;
        }It throws a ClassCastException, and I can't figure out why. For some reason, it's having a problem explicitly casting an object of type Object to one of type Book. This problem is beyond my comprehension, so I hope someone can help. I appreciate any input. Thank you.

    It's happening at runtime, unfortunately. From what I can follow, it start by taking a Transaction object, and just pulling a String from the attributes of it. Then, it takes the String and gives it to the findByKey method, which takes it in as a Comparable. The Comparable is then used in a series of comparisons, narrowing down the potential Nodes for a match. Then, at the end of the find method, it returns a Node, which is then attempted to be cast as a Book. Now, I don't know if it casts it as an Object before returning it, or if it's just giving back the Node to be cast as the Book. (I'm not that fluent in Java to understand the specifics)
    By the way, I accidentally cut off the last 2 lines from the find method. The first one read return parentNode; and the second line was just the closing bracket for the whole method.

  • Applet security problems while connecting with database

    i hav problem in the japplet connecting with sql database
    it gives security access denied error while running program as my driver is jdbc:odbc:bridge driver
    so for resolving this error how can i turn off security of applet and also which security permission to be change?
    plz reply

    Maybe I should question the need to access a local database on the client PC.
    But anyway, the normal way to obtain security clearance is to use a signed applet.
    Another possibility is to grant the applet all permissions by modifying the security policy file of each client to grant your applet 'all permissions'. Note that in this case you must have access to each and every client PC or ask them to do so before running the applet.Database access at client's machine is ridiculous. I doubt this is what OP wants.
    @OP: request you to post the original security issue and the environment details.

  • Applet development problem

    hi...this is my first post in this forum....
    my problem is very strange...im a newbie at applet development.....when i wrote the following program:
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class Display extends Applet
    Image img1;
    Image img2;
    public void init()
    img1=getImage(getCodeBase(),"Images/Duke.gif");
    img2=getImage(getCodeBase(),"Images/Sctonly2.gif");
    public void paint(Graphics grph)
    grph.drawImage(img1,10,20,this);
    grph.drawImage(img2,10,20,this);
    now on compiling this program, the compiler gives the following error...
    illegal start of expression: public void init()
    im completely stumped....why is it giving this error and what to do to correct this.
    thank you

    Remove the { before the method declaration public void init(){}
    and a } after grph.drawImage() method call.
