Apply a patch which is a diff file

Hi All
I although I know how to keep a unix system up and running I actually don't know how to apply the patch for gzip :(
Its a diff file. Can someone give me the right syntax or point me to the documentation (I looked around at docs.sun.com but didn't find it)
Thanks a lot
LuCa

are you refering to this patch:
http://www.gzip.org/gzip-1.2.4b.patch
If you have a compiler installed (such as gcc or cc)
You can apply this patch if you download the entire gzip source from
ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu/mirrors/gnu/gzip/gzip-1.2.4.tar
then apply the patch using gpatch -p0 < patch file
.. and compile your own' gzip using:
./configure
make
make install
.7/M

  • Applying a patch file to source code

    Hi,
In reference to this post: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=30515#p30515
Please could someone explain to me how to apply the patch to the source code?
I tried: cat patch_file | patch -p0 where patch_file contained the patch code,
    [jack@tmain L2-linux-driver_new]$ cat patch_file | patch -p0
can't find file to patch at input line 5
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:
    |Only in l2.fixed: Module.symvers
    |diff -u l2/at_ethtool.c l2.fixed/at_ethtool.c

    |+++ l2.fixed/at_ethtool.c 2007-11-25 01:58:24.000000000 +0100
My directory structure is as follows:
    [jack@tmain L2-linux-driver_new]$ ls -R
    COPYING atl2.spec patch_file release_note.txt
    atl2.7 ldistrib.txt readme src
    ./src:
    Makefile at_ethtool.c at_hw.h at_osdep.h kcompat.c kcompat_ethtool.c
    at.h at_hw.c at_main.c at_param.c kcompat.h
I tried renaming src to l2, but that gave me further errors.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks alot,
    Jack

    Thanks, that gave me:
    [jack@tmain l2]$ patch -Np1 -i patch_file

Thats the same even if i rename src to l2, so that l2/at_ethtool.c exists.

  • How to get list of applied patches which applied using admrgpch

How to get list of applied patches which applied using admrgpch

You can't really get the individual patch IDs from a merged patch, unless you have the log file from the admrgpch run available.
You can, however, get the list of bugs fixed by a merged patch, and those bug numbers sometimes, but not always, correspond to a patch ID. Keep in mind, though, that individual patches often contain entries for multiple bug numbers.
Here's a query that I use to look at the contents of merged patches. It works best if the merged patches have been given unique names, instead of the default name 'merged' from admrgpch. If you run it and see that everything belongs to patch name 'merged,' you might want to change the selected column to ap.applied_patch_id instead of ap.patch_name.
    select ap.patch_name
    , ad.orig_patch_name
    , ad.driver_file_name
    , ad.merged_driver_flag
    , ad.merge_date
    , bug.bug_number
    , cp.patch_abstract
    from ad_applied_patches ap
    join ad_patch_drivers ad using (applied_patch_id)
    join ad_comprising_patches cp using (patch_driver_id)
    join ad_bugs bug using (bug_id)
    order by applied_patch_id;

  • Apply diff file to source tree

    Hello,
I have a source tree and a diff file containing about 200 changes to different files in the source tree.
In the past I only applied changes to a source tree using patch files, but how do i do this with a diff file?
I tried stuff like patch srctree -n updates.diff, but that fails ...
Do i have to create a patch file out of the diff file? Cause i saw that it seems to be the normal case that you create
patch files using two different source trees and than compare them using diff.
    Thank you!

    Hi!
    thx for the help!
If i run patch < file.diff i get  " patch: **** Only garbage was found in the patch input. "

  • COMPLETE LIST OF PATCHES WHICH APPLY TO 9.0.2.0.1

It seems that there are several patches floating around for
the latest production release of portal: 9.0.2.0.1 (Linux)
    My question is simple:
Can we get a complete patch list of all patches which apply
    to 9.0.2.0.1?
It would be nice to install the patches BEFORE running into
the issues, instead of wasting cycles on things which are
    already patched.
Product Management, is there a way to get this list???

it would be very useful to get a list of these one off patches as they are released - nothing is getting posted in this forum recently regarding availability of patches.
Any bug fixes are a good thing, especially if it means I do not have to wait until Q1 next year for a patch set.

  • Applying a patch

I'm having a problem setting my wireless card to monitor mode and apparently this is the solution. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to apply this patch or which files to patch. Could somebody please help me out? Thanks!

    SOLVED!
Speak of the devil! I was just about to make a thread on the same subject about a patch problem I have had for a few days now.
Ok, I have read the "Patching in ABS" wiki entry, but I am still having issues with patching a custom WINE build. At the moment I am unsure of whether it is an issue with the patch or if it is an issue with my PKGBUILD. Here is the output I get from makepkg:
can't find file to patch at input line 4
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:
    |diff -pur wine/dlls/user32/Makefile.in wine/dlls/user32/Makefile.in
    |--- wine/dlls/user32/Makefile.in 2010-10-15 21:37:09.000000000 +0400
    |+++ wine/dlls/user32/Makefile.in 2010-10-18 22:44:01.000000000 +0400
Instantly I'm thinking this is possibly a directory transversal issue. The way the PKGBUILD for wine works is it has a 64-bit and 32-bit install and creates them in seperate directories from the looks of things. I may be completely wrong, I am only a newb (Tread softly, please ). I have tried everything possible from copying the patch file to the source directory like the wiki mentions, copying the patch file to the actual package directory itself, and a few other iterations of changes that I can't seem to recall.
Here is the PKGBUILD and patch I am trying to use.
    PKGBUILD: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/335187/
    Patch: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/335188/
Yes, I realize it's using an older version of WINE. I was backtracking to see if it was just a possible issue with the patch or not. I am not extremely knowledgeable about patching (Or ABS for that matter yet!), but I am willing to learn.
EDIT: Oh also I could not figure out how to add the patch to the source array. Any help with this would be appreciated as it would probably solve the problem of having to copy the patch two times in the PKGBUILD.
EDIT2 (SOLVED): My problem was solved simply by adding the patch to sources (Figured out how to finally do that with the help of people in IRC and looking at Skype's PKGBUILD). I also removed the individual "cp ($patch)" lines and made an individual one underneath where PKBUILD renames the '$pkgbuild' directory. Also ran into to some compiling errors because I forgot to add a forward slash spacer in the configure portions of the install. Newb mistakes fixed thanks to some help, reading, and common sense (Doh, I lost mine in the /tmp/ folder apparently).

  • [SOLVED]How to apply a patch- first attempt

I need to apply a patch to python2-pillow, which was kindly created by manisandro, to allow my HP Officejet 6700 scanner to work.  I'm following the directions at Patching in ABS.  I already have the python2-pillow package installed via pacman.  I generated the md5sum for the patch by copying and pasting the text into gedit and saving it locally as a .diff file.  I then ran md5sum on the file.  The following is a copy of my PKGBUILD:

When I run makepkg I get an error saying I am missing several dependancies: tk, python2-setuptools.  I don't get this error if I reinstall the package using pacman.  Shouldn't the dependancies be the same?  It also seems to be packaging python-pillow rather than python2-pillow.  Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks for any help.

Fixed checksum problem.  The makepkg had worked in part the the .diff file was in the source directory.  I ran md5 on that and it worked.  However, new problem:
    ==> Starting build()...
/home/sl/abs/pillow/PKGBUILD: line 21: cd: cd /home/sl/abs/pillow/src/Pillow-2.3.0: No such file or directory
==> ERROR: A failure occurred in build().
        Aborting...
    However,
    [sl@localhost pillow]$ cd /home/sl/abs/pillow/src/Pillow-2.3.0
    [sl@localhost Pillow-2.3.0]$
Changing permissions to 777 didn't help.

  • Patch 4.6.21.1 File to modify?

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Berkeley DB 4.6.21 in a Solaris 10 machine (sparc), so I have downloaded the files "db-4.6.21.tar.gz" and "patch.4.6.21.1". After unzipping the first file, I have the folder db-4.6.21 where I have copied the file of the patch.
    When I run:
    patch -p0 < patch.4.6.21.1
    the system says in Spanish:
Parece una diff de contexto de nuevo estilo
    Archivo que modificar: _
(in English, I think the traduction would be something like this:
It seems there is a diff of context of the new style
    File to modify: _
My question is... which file do I have to answer?
    Thanks in advance!
    Rocio.

    Hello,
I just tried to apply a patch on a Solaris 10 machine
and I get the same message:
    $ patch -Np0 < db_dump.diff
Looks like a new-style context diff.
    File to patch:
This could indicate an out-of-date version of patch.
You can continue if you type in the file being patched.
In my case I was patching db_dump/db_dump.c and inputting
that name allowed patch to apply the diff:
    $ patch -Np0 < db_dump.diff
Looks like a new-style context diff.
    File to patch: db_dump/db_dump.c
    done
Take a look at the files being patched by patch.4.6.21.1
(e.g. just edit patch.4.6.21.1 and see what files are referenced)
and try inputting those files when asked.
    Hope that helps,
    Sandra

    Hussein,
One thing which I noticed now is in the apps Tier the
    tnsnames.ora under $TNS_ADMIN
    shows entry like this:
    PROD=
            (DESCRIPTION=
                    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<appsServerName>)(PORT=1521))
                    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<dbServer>)(PORT=1521))
                (CONNECT_DATA=
                    (SID=PROD)
)Actually *(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<appsIPaddress>)(PORT=1521))* this line in the tnsnames.ora is not correct. In fact the appsServerName should be replaced with dbServerName
I deleted the tnsnames.ora and reran autoconfig but it is again recreating the same entry.
Any clue how this can be fixed?
    Thanks
