Applying Album names to Comments field in iPhoto 6

I was never in the habit of applying anything to photo comments, but gave my albums a desriptive name so I knew what they were. However album titles are not searchable. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to create an Automator workflow or Applescript that could take the Album Name and apply it to the comments field for each picture in the album. I have over 25,000 pictures and quite a few albums. I've started to do it manually for each album but would love to find a quicker way to accomplish this.
Thanks.

Hi elenting,
It must be done within iPhoto. I started doing that awhile ago so I could find images in an album by doing a spotlight search for the album.
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
Do this for each album.
Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
I've also go to mention a useful widget called "iPhoto mini widget"
This widget will show you all images within it's viewer in an album.
for the image you are currently viewing , go to the Gear icon (menu" and you can choose to "open in" Preview, Mail, Safari or custom. It's pretty handy to choose an image and have it open in Mail to send.

  • Album name to Comments

    Hi all!
Finally, I got all my photos in iPhoto! Good!
But now, i'm looking for a way to take each album name and put them as comment for every picture in tat album...
Anybody has an idea on how I can do that?
    thanks

    HI bd!
Ok... let me explain... I know it can seem useless... Maybe you have a better way to do what I want to do...
I just imported 7500 pictures to iPhoto. I still have DVD backups of everything.
The first thing I did was to create albums for each theme or occasion to sort them. I have like a hundred or more albums right now. The next task I have to do is to take each album and get rid of the bad shots... And there is my problem... There is two tihngs I want to be able to do...
1- I don't want to go through the entire main library at once. I would like to take each album seperatly and go through them one by one, to keep track of what have been done and what have not.
2- If I go in album view instead of library view and that I deleted some pics, they would still be in the library... That's what I want to avoid... I don't want to keep bad pictures...
So... I figured out that if I was able to be in the main library and filter pics by their comments, according to the album their in, then all would be good...
I hope I'm not too confusing!
    Thanks
    François

  • Needed: Script to copy Photo album name into the comments field for pix

I was never in the habit of applying anything to photo comments, but gave my albums a desriptive name so I knew what they were. Now I wish I had because album titles are not searchable. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to create an Automator workflow or Applescript that could take the Album Name and apply it to the comments field for each picture in the album. I have over 25,000 pictures and quite a few albums. I've started to do it manually for each album but would love to find a quicker way to accomplish this.
    Thanks.

This should do the trick for you:
click here to open this script in your editor<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:400px">tell application "iPhoto"
    set theAlbums to (every album)
    repeat with thisAlbum in theAlbums
set thisAlbumName to the name of thisAlbum
set thePhotos to (every photo of thisAlbum)
    repeat with thisPhoto in thePhotos
set comment of thisPhoto to thisAlbumName
    end repeat
    end repeat
    end tell</pre>
FYI, it will step through every album; get its name; and then step through every photo in the album and change the comments to the album's name.
I recommend that you make a back-up before proceeding!

  • IPhoto still won't make web pages using the comments field

I am someone who makes use of the comments field in iPhoto. I don't edit the title, because I thought it edited the photo file name (perhaps only in earlier iPhoto versions). Unfortunately, the Apple's tools for making a web page from iPhoto '08 seem to still use the title field only and not the comment field. That means that I have to edit all titles (to blank or a proper title) if I just want to show an annotation on just a few photos in a web page. At least the comments field defaults to blank, so I normally use it, along with the Better HTML plugin to make web pages, http://www.geeksrus.com/software/betterhtmlexport/
Now, the web pages produced by Apple are now as good as and even better than the BHTML templates, and I'd like to use them. But this problem with the comments means I can't quickly convert my old photo albums to something that makes nice web pages using my annotations with the iPhoto tools.
Does anybody know of any solutions to this problem? E.g. a script to copy the comments field to the title field?

I know what you mean. I can't believe that after so many versions of iPhoto that have supported publishing of some sort that such a basic and obvious feature still hasn't been implemented. It can't take that much effort to add. I'd rather have that than the new (and IMHO completely useless) "Events" feature. Speaking of which, does anyone know if there is a way to turn it off? It's annoying the heck outta me. I hate it.

  • Extracting EXIF data into Comments Fields

Does anyone know of a script which will extract the Info data (Camera metadata, Settings metadata, Lat/Long etc) into the comments field of iPhoto? I have a database now of about 12,000 images and I would like something to automate this.
    Powermac dual 2.5GHZ   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

I don't know of any but you might ask the same question over at the AppleScript forum. More "scripters" bound to be there.

  • Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File - Export - Album name with number).

Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File -> Export -> Album name with number).
Exporting a single Event retains the Event name which is what I'd expect. But highlighting more than one event and exporting it renames the images to Events 001.JPG, Event 002.JPG etc.
I was recently on holidays and had all my events nicely split on Dad's computer but when I went to export it I couldn't retain any of this information. Now I have to replicate this all again on my computer.
It wasn't possible to export the entire library as the external drive was fat32 format an I didn't want all of it. It would be nice to export a bunch of events to someone and have it retain the name.
Does anyone have a work around or will this be fixed at some point by Apple?

  • IPhoto 5 album names are present; photos are missing

One month ago I installed Mac OS X (10.5.4) on my iBook G4 to resolve issues with my browser and hotmail. Today after having loaded new photos into iPhotos within the last month, I entered iPhotos and found the last two years of photos missing. The album names are there but no photos appear to the right when I click on the album name for photos imported from March 2006 to present. In fact the right side picture viewing area is grayed out as are the photo manipulation icons on the bottom of the screen. I had no iPhotos problems since purchasing my iBook G4 in February 2005 until now shortly after the OS upgrade. Any suggestions?
I have viewed other similar posts but those circumstances are slightly different from mine.

    Brian
The database becomes corrupted from two principle causes:
    1. The app is interrupted in the act of writing to the database - by a crash or force quit for instance
    2. User activity in the iPhoto Library Folder - moving or renaming things.
If iPhoto Library Manager is not fully rebuilding then it suggests that your main db is so corrupted that it's not writing out to the Albumdata.xml file correctly. The only solution to that is to restore from a back up or start over new.
What version of iPhoto are you using? This is the iPhoto 08 forum, the original poster is referring to v5 and the instructions for starting over are different.

  • IPhoto '06 - '08 Import Issues: Album Names Not Imported; Grouped by Date

I imagine my circumstances aren't uncommon... After a clean install of Leopard and iLife '08 on my MacBook, I wanted to import my iPhoto '06 library into iPhoto '08. I had archived on an external hard drive the iPhoto Pictures directory from iPhoto '06 (the directory from ~user/Documents/Pictures/iPhoto Pictures/).
Using the File>Import to Library function in iPhoto '08 and selecting the iPhoto '06 library resulted in all of the pictures coming in, *but they weren't organized in the albums I created in iPhoto '06*. Instead, all pictures were organized into groups by date.
What in the ham sandwich is the proper way to import an iPhoto '06 library so that all of the old album names and organization is maintained in iPhoto '08?
    Many thanks for your time!

    TD,
Many thanks for the advice. I found one other thing that I wanted to ask about before giving this a whirl.
I noticed that the iPhoto Library in '08 is in fact a package, not a directory. Given that, there are two possible courses of action, and I wanted to know which was best.
    1. Delete the iPhoto '08 "iPhoto Library" package and replace it with the '06 "iPhoto Library" directory.
    2. Replace the contents of the '08 "iPhoto Library" package with the contents of the '06 "iPhoto Library" directory?
I was uncertain about option 1, as I didn't know how getting rid of the package would affect the application (or if it's needed).
    Cheers,
    R

  • IPhoto album name

    Dear all,
I manage my photos in iPhoto in albums.
Is there any option how to get the album name where the photo is placed when I'm on the photo in Evens, or Last Import, or just Photos?
I managed some of the photos and placed them in different albums. Now I can not find the albums (maybe lost somewhere in albums' structure). I can find the photo via Events but I'm not able to check if the photo is already placed to album and which one.
    Kind Regards,
    Kubo

There is no way to find which Album a photo has been placed in, unfortunately.
You can, however, find all the images that are not in an album using the following Smart Album
    File -> New Smart Album
Album -> is not -> Any

  • Find word in album name in iphoto

Is it possible to search / find an album that I created in iphoto - i.e. can I search by a word that I used in the album name?
I don't remember the date I took the photo but I remember what I called the album.  I have 44,000+ photos and have organized them by albums.
    thanks

That's what I have to do, except that I have about 25 folders, each with about 100 albums and it takes forever.  I was just looking for an easy way to search by a word in an album title.  I don't change the name of every photo so I can't search by photo name.
My albums are titled with the date then the name, so I don't think a sort would help (although I can't find how you can sort albums if you would pass that along that would be nice.)
You would think there would be a way to search for an album name?
    thanks.

  • How do I delete photos and photo albums from my iPhone? The instructions given do not work. No "delete" symbol appears next to the album name, and no trash can icon appears below most of the pictures the computer just put on my new iPhone 4.

How do I delete photos and photo albums from my iPhone 4? The instructions given do not work. No "delete" symbol appears next to the album name when I press "Edit," and no trash can icon for me to click appears below most of the individual photos in the albums the computer just loaded on my new iPhone 4. When I synced the new phone the computer added these photo albums without permission from me. They are now taking up about 3 GB of memory on my phone. I would like very much to get rid of these photos from the phone. How do I do this?

To delete photos from your device
In iTunes, select the device icon in the Devices list on the left. Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
    Choose "Sync photos from."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
    Click Apply.

  • Why does iTunes stop working when I try to type the album name in to submit cd track names?

I have a cd that I'm trying to separate, but whenever I try to type the album name in the submit CD track names box, iTunes freezes, then quits working. Why is it doing this and what can I do to stop it?

Does it happen for any slideshow? Or only for one slideshow with certain images?
Does iPhoto also freeze for a new iPhoto library, if you create a new library with some test images?
If iPhoto only freezes for a certain slideshow, check, if it is one of the photos or videos, that is making the slideshow freeze. Create a new slideshow and add the images one by one, to fnd the one, that cannot be played. Remove it.
If iPhoto only freezes with all slideshows in your current library, repair your iPhoto library. It may have been migrated with permission issues. How did you restore the library, after you wiped your mac and clean-installed?
To repair the library using the First Aid Tools, see Old Toad's post here: Rebuild iPhoto Library, Version 11, see "Fix 1". In your case, I'd start with Repair Permission, the Repair database. Apply the other fixes, if need be.
Post back, if the repair does not help.

  • Problems with the 'Comments' field in iTunes

First, sorry for my english (I'm danish).
I've read a lot of threads here and everywhere else, but can't find a solution for my exact problem. I use Windows Vista and the newest version of iTunes.
Most of my mp3 songs (35.000) are put directly in album folders to the folder 'D:My Music from another computer via a USB drive and the songs already have id3 tag information on them.
I then add the albums to iTunes and most of my tag information is now updated in iTunes. Names, Artists, Genre, Year, everything is okay. By the way the songs have ID3v2.3 tag information. I see that in my Mp3tag v.2.42 application.
But the problem is with the 'Comments' field:
Those tags (originally put to the songs directly in the proberties of the song in Windows Explorer) will simply not transfer to iTunes 'Comments' field. And if I write something in the iTunes 'Comments' field this will not show up in the fields properties in windows Explorer. It looks like the 'Comments' fields in iTunes and in the proberties in the song are not connected at all!?
I then found out, I could let iTunes convert the ID3 codes, but nothing happens except from when using v. 1.0 or 1.1, because then the comments tag are transferres, but unfortunately all the tags will only show 30 characters!!!
And there's also a different story:
A few albums though are put directly on my computer by using iTunes to import the CD. These songs have ID3 v.2.2 tags, so I guess iTunes import files in that format?
And here it's a little different story. If I put comment data directly to the file proberties in Windows Explorer (after the CD's been imported to iTunes), the comments will show up in iTunes, but only as several 0 and 1 digits! On the other hand, if I put information directly in iTunes 'Comments' field it wil show up correctly in the file proberties! But it's only a few songs/albums that are handled that way.
Well, bottom's line, I want to see my comments tags (which are allready there in the song's proberties) when I browse my music in my folders in Windows Explorer and I want to see the exact same comments if I go to browse my music in iTunes. That should not be a problem ... but it is not ...
Can I please get a solution or at least an explanation, and hopefully in not too tecnical terms.

I, too, hope someone will answer this! I am hoping to catalog my entire CD collection in iTunes and I want to include the storage box number somehow, thinking that "comments" would be a good place to do so. If I cannot do that I'll try to find a program other than iTumes to do it. Does anyone have any suggestions on this topic? ...perhaps I need to open a new thread?
    THANKS!
    Doug

  • How can I add comments to an iPhoto slide show that will appear onscreen?

I have put together a slide show on iPhoto (6.0.6) and I'd like to have a line of text appear with several of the slides - things like "Beginning our hike - " and "Closing ceremonies". I haven't been able to find anything in the help to describe how to do that - can it be done? Thanks.

    shcram:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's an AppleScript that will take the contents of the comments field and put them in the Title field so they will display on a slideshow. When you're done you can use the Batch Change menu option to revert the Title to the file names. See my post here for the link to the script: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5400478&#5400478
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
