Applying rman backuppieces to stanby database

Hello,
I have an standby database 10g, which is feeded by archive logs sent from primary.
A lot of archive logs were missed for ever, so standby needs to be recovered. For that, I applied rman incremental backups.
Those rman backuppieces were generated on primary, then copied to standby and applied like this:
Step 3: Cancel managed recovery at the standby database
STDBY>alter database recover managed standby database cancel;
Media recovery complete.
Copied the backup files to standby server to D:\arch\ folder.
Step 4: Catalog the Incremental Backup Files at the Standby Database
D:\arch> rman target /
RMAN> CATALOG START WITH 'D:\arch\';
Step 5: Apply the Incremental Backup to the Standby Database+
RMAN> RECOVER DATABASE NOREDO;
Step 6: Put the standby database back to managed recovery mode.
STDBY>> recover managed standby database disconnect;
Media recovery complete.However, I think something went wrong. I would like to try it again.
My question: If I apply again the same rman backup pieces on standby... does it will add records on the tables or Oracle would be know that those rman backup pieces were already applied and do nothing?

Based on your comment "I think something went wrong" there isn't a chance I am going to offer a suggestion. Please open an SR with Oracle Support.
For those that wonder why I won't help and are inclined to jump in with both feet ... keep in mind ... you have no idea what the original issue was ... and you have no idea what went wrong.
To the OP: If you want help you must provide all relevant information. Some well meaning person may toast your system due to the lack of information.

  • Check actual apply log time on standby database after synchronization

    Hi All,
    I want to check the date and time stamp of applied archived logs on stanby database. How should I check that??
    My dataguard link was broken for sometime and meanwhile lot of transactions happened on primary database. Now When the link came up the synchronisation happened within few hours and ultimatly transport and appliy lag became 0. But now I want to check actual time taken for tranporting the logs and applying them on standby database. Is there any way I could do that easily..
    Thanks

    This script written by Yousef Rifai I found here http://www.dba-village.com/village/dvp_forum.OpenThread?ThreadIdA=34772&DestinationA=RSS might be just what you need (run on standby database):
    set ver off
    alter session set nls_date_format='dd-mon-yy hh24:mi:ss'
    select app_thread, seq_app, tm_applied,
    nvl(seq_rcvd,seq_app) seq_rcvd, nvl(tm_rcvd,tm_applied) tm_rcvd
    from
    (select sequence# seq_app, FIRST_TIME tm_applied, thread# app_thread
    from v$archived_log where applied = 'YES'
    and (first_time, thread#) in (
    select max(FIRST_TIME ), thread#
    from v$archived_log where applied = 'YES'
    group by thread# )
    (select sequence# seq_rcvd, FIRST_TIME tm_rcvd, thread# rcvd_thread
    from v$archived_log where applied = 'NO'
    and (first_time, thread#) in (
    select max(FIRST_TIME ), thread#
    from v$archived_log where applied = 'NO'
    group by thread# )
    where rcvd_thread(+)= app_thread

  • What are the steps applying incremental backups to standby database 11g

    Hi All,
    I have built 11g none ASM standby database from ASM RAC Database. Now I want to apply incremental backup to the standby database from primary but not sure how to do it. I tried following and I had an error “ORA-01103: database name 'ins-prim' in control file is not 'ins-sec'”
    1- I have configured standby database with RMAN backup.
    2- After finishing installation, I took a incremental backup from primary server(ins-prim) and moved incremental backup and control file to the standby (ins-sec) database
    3- I stared standby database nomount mode
    4- restore controlfile from “incremental backup location in standby database”
    5- alter database mount; and got this error
    “ORA-01103: database name 'ins-prim' in control file is not 'ins-sec'”
    What are the steps applying incremental backups to standby database with 11g?
    Thank you

    I build the database from backup and changed from ASM to none ASM and changed location of data files and logfiles. I think this changes makes the standby database as logical one.
    You can a have a physical standby with different locations for everything (redo/controlfiles/datafiles), ASM and no ASM etc. I have a such a configuration in production (10gR2)
    I build the database from backup
    Are you sure you have a standby ? Ins-sec receives the archivelog files from the primary ? How did you proceed to build this database ? I suspect you don't have a standby at all ! If you have duplicated the database ins-sec and ins-pri are independent databases and you won't be able to apply an incremental backup (your script was not correct but it is another story)

  • Refreshing stanby database

    hi,
    I've got stanby database and I am trying to refresh it from incremental backup of primary database, as follows
    - check CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# on standby
    - backup incremental from SCN database on primary
    - recover database noredo on standby
    everything looks fine, rman is apllying correct backupset but CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# and current_scn on standby database do not change, why? how can I check if recover was succesfu; ?
    thanks for any advice

    From the docs current_scn is not updated unless the db is open or you are in managed recovery:
    CURRENT_SCN     NUMBER     Current SCN; null if the database is not currently open. For a standby database, the current standby redo application SCN.
    you could check v$archived_log
    SELECT MAX(SEQUENCE#), THREAD# FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG GROUP BY THREAD#;
    or even
    select group#, thread#, sequence#, status, last_change# from V$standby_log;

  • RMAN restore from active database, ASM

    I'm attempting to refresh a stage database from a prod database using RMAN restore from active database. Both are on ASM. After working through various hurdles, I've got one issue I'm a bit stuck on. I've got a handful of data files that do NOT have OMF names (ie MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx instead of MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx.351.714779777) and these are failing when I do the restore. The syntax I'm using in RMAN is as follows:
    duplicate target database to dwstage
    from active database
    spfile parameter_value_convert 'dwprod','dwstage'
    SET DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE'
    SET LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE';
    The error message I'm getting is this:
    RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on ORA_DISK_1 channel at 04/21/2011 13:26:24
    ORA-17628: Oracle error 19505 returned by remote Oracle server
    continuing other job steps, job failed will not be re-run
    Normally from what I've seen/read this error can be traced back to needing to pre-create the directories for the controlfiles etc, but since 90% of the datafiles copied correctly...
    Any suggestions as to a way around this, or am I going to be forced to restore from a backupset?

    This fails saying that "ORA-12528: TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections" which is quite normal given that the listener is havig a handle in BLOCKED state for this AUXDB as it is in NOMOUNT state.
    Could you please help me on how to proceed?
    One option can be to create the controlfile manually and mount the instance before doing the duplicate. I hope Rman can continue from there.
    Another option is to go for backup based duplicate.
    Is there any other way to go?
    Provide static registration on AUXILIARY side for your auxiliary instance and try again.For example change listener.ora file as
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (GLOBAL_DBNAME = AUXDB)
          (ORACLE_HOME = <your oracle home>)
          (SID_NAME = AUXDB)
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <auxiliary host/ip>)(PORT = 1521))
      )And restart listener on auxiliary host then try again

  • RMAN: To Register 8i Database in 9i Catalog

    Dear friends,
    I am working with Oracle 9.0.1.1 under W2K. Recently I configured Recovery Catalog database in our 9i server. Now I wanted to register two target databases that are running in another server Oracle 8i (same network).
    When I tried to register, I encounter the error like "RMAN version not combatible with Oracle 9.0.1.1 ... Target database version is too old"
    Is it possible to register the target database 8i into 9i catalog??? If not, what could be the alternative?
    Thanks in advance,
    M M Sheriff

    Hey Sheriff,
    have a look at the link below. It shows you all the compatibilities of RMAN catalog and target databases
    and executables. I'm sure that you can use the 8i catalog and executable for oracle9i targets.
    Hope this was a little helpful...
    Cheers,

  • Rman clone ? duplicate database ? data guard ? standby database?

    hey there !!
    What is the difference between Rman clone , duplicate database , data Guard , standby db?
    1 more thing , standby database and duplicate database are same??

    RMAN Clone : you take backup of a database on one server ,then take it to other server ,again use RMAN to restore the database,A lot manual intervention is needed in this method
    RMAN DUPLICATE: same as above just that manual intervention is less. With 11gR2 there active database duplication in which you can clone your test database directly from production database without taking and then transferring the backup to test server.
    Standby Database :they are of two types Physical and logical.The setup is done using RMAN with any of the above methods.Standby is the in-sync (can have some delay) version of primary database either block by block which is physical standby configuration or SQL statment wise which is logical standby.
    Data Guard:This is also a standby configuration.Here the failover and switchover are automated with the help of DGMGRL utility.In manual standby this same can be done via SQL*PLUS using sql commands

  • RMAN backup for two databases with similar DBID

    We have two databases with SID 'uiivc' and 'uiivc1' running from one of the HP Unix 11.11 PA-RISC server. I did configured RMAN backup for both databases. But it is found that both databases have same DBID [connected to target database: UIIVC (DBID=3005194057) for UIIVC & connected to target database: UIIVC1 (DBID=3005194057) for UIIVC1] and backup configured via crontab seen running fine with full backup at weekend and archivelog backup at daily for both databases. Now my query is that will it create any issues at time of restoration since both databases have similar DBID? Does RMAN uses DBID to distinguish databases?
    Kindly help to clarifiy
    Regards

    Hi Tycho,
    I configured RMAN to store controlfile backups in different folders on each database.
    UIIVC database:
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/hot_backups/rmanbkp/uiivc/cf%F';
    UIIVC1 database:
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/hot_backups/rmanbkp/uiivc1/cf%F';
    Server output:

  • RMAN duplicate from ACTIVE DATABASE

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a new 11.2.0.1 database by duplicating an existing 11.2.0.1 database using Rman with 'from active database' option.
    I have created a password file and listener is configured as well.
    The aux database is started in nomount state.
    rman
    connect target sys/pwd123@SRCDB
    connect auxiliary sys/pwd123@AUXDB
    duplicate target database to AUXDB
    FROM ACTIVE DATABASE;

  • Manually apply archived log to standby database.

    Hi all,
    I am working on oracle 10g EE(10.2.0.4).I am having a very difficult database switchover case in my hand.
    1.> There are two database .one primary(prim) and another standby(standby).
    2.> Initially both of them was configured as oracle data guard, where prim was primary and standby was standby using rman .(RMAN>duplicate target database for
    standby dorecover).
    3.>But the rate of generation of archivelog is very high( 20 archivelog per hour with 200mb each).
    4.> So automatic shipping of archivelog has been disabled from primary.(log_archive_dest_state_2=defer and nullifying the value of log_archive_dest_2).
    5> Now after a period of time archived logs are shipped to dr site manually and applied manually.(alter database recover automatic standby database;)
    6.> Now there is a hardware problem occured at primary..it will take 72 hours to come up.
    How can i use standby database as primary for that 72 hour.As archive log apply is manually done and parameters are being changed,can i switch over these two?
    Is it possible to switchover and switch back these two database with such a configuration?

    As of now you can perform failover your standby to primary database. you should have flashaback enabled, so you have to create a restore point.
    Then it can be opened in read & write mode, So once you finished again you can go back to that point.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/manage_ps.htm#i1017111
    The above case applicable if you ready to loose, But it doesnt make sense. But in your case this doesnt work. Because once you start use of Standby as primary, there would be live/production data, which you need very much.
    So there is lot of work to do.
    You have to rebuild standby database and then switchover back to same location. So its a little trip work.
    Have you enabled Dataguard Broker ?
