Arch randomly locks up completely.
I have been having this issue for a while. I tried to get it solved on another forum, to no avail. This is frustrating me, so hopefully I don't rub off as rude.
So, here's the scoop. Arch will just randomly freeze up. LED's like caps lock, scroll lock, touchpad off/on and others will completely freeze. Pressing them has no effect. The keyboard is rendered useless, I can't do anything with it. X itself just completely freezes. It's very odd. I always have to hard reboot the computer by pressing and holding the power button for several seconds. In the last freeze, which just happened about an hour ago, my system actually dropped to the console. But it still froze there. I studied the output on the frozen screen, and there was nothing that helped with debugging at all. It was all routine sorta stuff.
This happens very randomly. In all my efforts to trace this issue to a common problem, I have failed. What's odd is that Pacman will freeze sometime during an operation. it will produce no debugging output. it just freezes and hangs there infinitely. I have to Control + C and restart the operation to continue. This is not as common as the namesake of this thread, however, but it is worth mentioning.
I've snooped around in /var/log after every crash, and I can't ever find any error or obvious problems. It seems as if the system is running great. However, as noted above, this last crash was odd (in comparison to the other ones) and did produce 3 lines in errors.log. I'm not sure if these errors actually apply to the crash though, as I didn't not know if it occurred right afterwards. All i can tell you is that these 3 lines are the only thing that is even relevant in the 10 or so times this has happened. Here they are:-
May 1 00:14:41 localhost kernel: [21397.163643] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6

SMART passes my disk with flying colors. No errors, all values are normal, nothing of alarm there.
I've done everything I know how to troubleshoot, but this one is over my head guys.
Please help me.

Recently I experienced this bug. It is reproduced when I try to open some web-pages with Firefox. One of these is http://www.linguee.com/german-english/t … nisse.html Symptoms is a short two fold screen blinking followed with a hang up with no keyboard/mouse response. My machine is a laptop, I use no external video outputs. As far I know this problem is not solved yet, see for instance a related thread on gentoo forum: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-8 … art-0.html
/var/log/errors.log right before I performed the hard reset:

Computer randomly locks up when firewire drives are connected?
Here's what I have:
- 2011 27" iMac i7
- 2011 15" MacBook Pro i7
I recently replaced all of my USB hard drives with Firewire drives, mostly as a speed and simplification measure. Under USB, I had to have a series of hubs which seemed to slow things down pretty dramatically, as well as cause a lot of weird behavior, like randomly ejecting. And, of course, there was the inevitable birds nest of wires. So, since there was no way to add USB ports to the iMac, except for hubs, I decided to move FireWire and daisy chain them.
This was all connected to a dedicated iMac workstation, the MacBook was never connected to the drives.
The drives were added a few days before a complete system overhaul was done. The system had been acting funny. We're little things here and there (finder often had to be relaunched after a restart, wifi was not able to automatically connect, etc.), and the system was starting to lock up on a somewhat regular basis. So, Lion was installed fresh and nothing was restored from Time Machine except for a few applications here and there (nothing system related). Once the system was all freshly installed, the little quirks were gone, but the random locking up was not. And it was getting worse.
So, I did some of the trouble shooting I had done in the past; created a new user, repaired permissions, repaired the disk, etc. It wasn't fixing anything, just getting worse. I finally did an extended Apple Hardware Test and got the error: 4M0T/4/40000003: HDD-1285
I couldn't find anything on the web about it. So I called AppleCare, they didn't know what it was either. So I took the computer into the Apple Store. They eventually got back to me saying the hard drive and the fan had failed and that they were in the process of fixing it.
However, in the mean time, I moved the MacBook Pro over to the workstation where the iMac had been. Low and behold, within a few hours, I was seeing exactly the same symptoms I'd seen on the iMac. If the Firewire drives were plugged in, the computer would randomly lock up, and again, not even necessarily when the drives were reading or writing. It appears to be completely random. Sometimes specific applications will lock up, like Mail, VLC or System Preferences. Force quitting the application has no effect. The window won't disappear, even if I attempt to log out or shut the computer down. The screen will change to the grey background, but the window will never go away. It'll just sit there with the pin wheel forever. The only option at this point is to force the system to shut down with the power button.
This only happens when Firewire is connected.
I've tried swapping out the cable with no luck, the same problem is true. I have five drives daisy chained like this:
WD MyBook 2TB --> WD MyBook 2TB --> WD MyBook 2TB --> LaCie d2 Quadra v3 2TB --> LaCie d2 Quadra v3 2TB
Now, admittedly, I have never daisy chained, so I don't know if I've made some bad mojo for myself by my device order, or by mixing brands or something, or if it's even possible that maybe one of the drives is faulty and it's screwing things up for me. I just don't know, and troubleshooting is challenging becuase I can't make the problem happen, it just happenes whenever it feels like it.
I have to get this issue resolved. I could switch back to USB, but I'd hate to do that because I spent a substantial amount of money on the drives specifically to avoid using USB
Insight into this would really be appreciated.I am having the exact same problem. Th eone difference is that on occasion, iTunes downloads my playlists yet not the associated songs in the playlist.

I'm using K9N2-SLI plat with Bios 3.5, AMD64 X2 6400+ Black Ed., 4GB ram (2x2GB Cas 4-4-4-12 T2 matched set), XFX 8800GTS(92) 512, Corsair TX650, Artic Cooler Freezer64 CPU H/S running Vista64 Home Premium Sp2. I'm having random lock-ups during 3D games. Sometimes it locks up after 30 mins in game or sometimes it locks up after days of playing, I can't get it to reproduce the lock up at will. I have read alot of post about this motherboard and it seems it comes down to power supply. I had a New Apevia Beast 2 rail system but after reading the posts I returned it for new Corsair TX650. At full load CPU cores never go above 47c and Idles around 30-31. Ran mem test over night with no errors. Did notice in Mem Test it stated Ram was set at Cas 4-5-5-18 T2. I went to BIOS and set the mem for Volt 2.0 Cas 4-4-4-12 T2. This did reduce the lock-ups to the point I thought I had it fixed. Than today I locked up twice. When it locks up computer becomes unresponsive last sound repeats for few seconds and the only way to resume is to press restart button. I have tried with Cool n'quite on and off, DOT is never been on. Computer runs fine in 2d operations. It's only when I go into 3d games. Video Card has been tested in other machine and is working fine. My game sometime requires me to stay logged in over night to Sell goods. Every morning this last week computer has froze sometime during the night. Crysis plays fine for hours, It seems it happens in not so demanding games, Aion, Knight Online and Wow. All power plugs are plugged, fresh install of Vista, Newest drivers from web site, Bios update via the Forum USB key app. Would really like a reliable computer. What am I missing? Let me know if you need any other info.
OK I ran single stick and it locked up quicker. I went to BIOS used optimized defaults with only changing the volts to 2.0. and it locked up again. It's lockups seem longer if I change mem setting to 4-4-4-12 T2. I used CPU Z and noticed few things.
The memory report from CPU-Z:

since I was using EPP profile 1 I noticed that motherboard is running my memory at 4-4-4-12-24(EPP profile shows should be 22)-2T. Should I change to match memory? or should I try JEDEC #3 @ 400MHZ

Hi,
New build listed below. Works great 99% of the time. The only issue I have is infrequent random lock-ups. The lock-ups occur either during windows start-up, or randomly while doing some non-stressing task (like web browsing or word processing). Currently at 2.4GHz, but have had it higher. I lowered it to 2.4 to see if it made any difference, but it seems about the same.
Since "lock-up" can mean a lot of different things I will describe it. The screen freezes totally. Does not respond to any input (CTR-ALT-DEL) etc. It often seems to occur in the middle of HDD access, and the HDD light stays on continuously. Hard reset is required to fix.
It has not locked up during a game, burning or transcoding a DVD or when running any stress tests. It happens VERY INFREQUENTLY (I just had my first one in about a week) and is not repeatable. The only other bit of info I can come up with is that is seems that it usually occurs during HDD access, and the HDD light is stuck on.
I almost wish I had the problem more often. If I had this problem regularly I would feel pretty comfortable troubleshooting, but as it is I could spend a lot of time changing things around and "think" I fixed it only to have it come back a week later.
My thoughts are either a RAM issue or my PSU. Thoughts?Quote from: JoeFriday on 20-March-07, 12:18:23

Do you have all the necessary options for overclocking disabled, C1E, EIST, all the spread spectrums. Also what are your cpu voltage and NB voltage set at...those two seem to have the most effect on system stability when ocing. Also what are your memory settings... I have your same memory and it refuses to work at anything but its advertised setting (800mhz at 4-4-4-15) -
My iPhone 5 keeps freezing when I connect to wifi, not just freeze the wifi, but freezes the whole phone and have to hold home and lock button. Locks up completely and instantly when I turn on wifi and connect. Solutions?
1. If you are really on iOS 7.1, you may wish to try upgrading to 8.1.2 which is the latest (basing this on your signature).
2. If updating the phone doesn't help, is this only when you connect to a specific wifi network? Or all wifi networks (including public with no password)? If it is ALL wifi networks, you may have a hardware problem. Genius bar would be the next step.

Firefox runs slowly or locks up completely
When I am on websites (many different ones such as Facebook, Yahoo mail, and many other sites that I visit) Facebook slows down to the point where it takes several minutes for a 'click' to register, or the program locks up completely and I have to force quit and start over. I haven't had this problem until I upgraded to Firefox 5.0. Now, it happens all the time. I love Firefox, and have always preferred it to other browsers...until this started happening.
Please give some details; what computers systems, what Firefox version?
Does this happen on some web sites , many?
'''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web link}
While you are in safe mode;
Type '''about:preferences#advanced'''<Enter> in the address bar.
Under '''Advanced,''' Select '''General.'''
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
Then restart. -
My macbook turns off randomly but not completely because when I tap the touchpad it goes to the password screen and I am back to it in seconds. It's really annoying. HELP!!!
1. Non volatile random access memory (NVRAM) is where the computer stores user's settings, like time and date, speaker volume, energy saver settings etc.
2. Reseting NVRAM has no impact on anything on your hard drive, or anything else on the computer.

Mac Book Pro (4.1) Randomly Locks Up/Not Responsive to Anything
My Mac Book Pro (OSx 10.5.5) seemingly randomly locks up after ~10ish hours of being on. This started about a week ago (purchased in late February) after nothing new being installed. I'm of course never in my office to see this happen, but what I see when I come back is a computer with a black monitor, not responsive to the keyboard at all (caps lock light won't even turn on, space doesn't "wake it up", etc), and not responsive to USB devices (iphone won't charge, external keyboard doesn't do anything). The LED on the open the lid button is in a solid dimly lit state. When I attempt to close the screen the same LED is in a solid (non-blinking) state though brighter. Again, USB peripherals have no effect on the state of the machine. When I open the screen it's exactly as described above. The only solution I've found is the power button which is incredibly frustrating since a) I lost some work and b) I lost a 3 GB download in the middle for the third time now. Help??? Thanks,
DoovieHave you run Repair Disk from Disk utilities while booted from your OS installer disk? Is your MBP set to sleep if not used while on?

IPad 3rd Gen iOS 7.1.1 - screen randomly locking and more!
Okay, since just this morning, my iPad has been randomly locking. It worked fine last night. Also the home button stops working half the time and occasionally my iPad kind of freezes then captures the screen when I try pressing the lock button. And occasionally after it hasn't locked itself in a while, it will come up with the shutting down screen..
None of my apps have updated for weeks, I haven't edited any settings and I haven't downloaded any new apps. I've tried turning it off and back on, rebooting and resetting all settings (I haven't tried wiping all data because it hasn't been updated since December..)
Please help! Is it my lock button playing up? Maybe a software bug that took a while to surface? Or did one of my games update without me knowing and cause all this?Swingflaps-
One thing you can try is to reset (reboot) your iPad. Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow. The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes. Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

Touchpad randomly locks itself and wont unlock on Satellite P50-A
Don't know if anyone can help me out but i recently bought a P50-A laptop and i am having issues with the touch-pad.
Basically what is happening is that every now and then my touch-pad randomly locks itself and then wont allow me to unlock and will unlock once I have reset the laptop.
I have checked the drivers and everything appears to be working fine and there appears to be no hardware conflicts.
Has anyone else had this happen to them? Please check this Toshiba document about available touchpad settings under Windows 8
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD3101Z30000R01.htm
I recommend disabling or changing the PalmCheck settings within the touchpad pointing area.
Greets and feedback would be appreciated. -
I have a 20gb 4th gen iPod with click wheel. Recently it has started to randomly lock up. When is does I do a reset (hold menu and select) and it comes back to life. Sometimes it will work for hours after a reset, other times it may only play a couple of songs and then lock up again.
Any thoughts on this or is this a sign of worse things to come?
Thanks in advance,
GregFirst, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes." -
Computer randomly locks up just recently.....
My specs:

Well I know my overclock is stable because I have stressed it an I'm running this setting for 2 months now. But recently it started to randomly lock up, there is no pattern. it can happen within 2 hours or 2 days. I've reintalled my machine 2 times and still it happens. I've updated the bios but I doubt it was cause by that. I can't diagnose it because there is no bsod just the screen locking up the only way is to hard reset. Problem is I can't find anything in the event viewer, It just said that the shutdown was unexpected or something...Can someone help me diagnose this? Or is there a more recent bios that I can try? Reduce the memory frequency to DDR2-800 and retest.
I reset my bios and tried this and it still locks up! It happened right now. Its so disappointing because it is so random. I've ran memtest and scanned for bad sectors but they are all normal. The random lockups just happened recently, It never happened before. -
Horizon2 Bluetooth mouse randomly locks up for minutes at a time.
The only solution is to re-pair the mouse (any bluetooth mouse, ive tried 3 and they all lock up) or reboot the computer, which is really bothersom when it locks up in the middle of something important and the only way to get out is use the touchscreen...
i have read the other issues from 2-4 years ago on other machines.
Those solutions did not work for me.
Please advise.I have used 4 different bluetooth mice in trying to get around this, and i am 99.99% certain that the bluetooth hardware is junk.
The cursor stops moving completely. The buttons stop working completely.
Randomly, and for no reason, whatever paired mouse i have will abruptly, and without warning, disconnect itself from the Lenovo Horizon 2 - 27" that i just purchased, yet the bluetooth software still says it is connected.
The ONLY recourse i have, is to use the touch-screen to exit out of whatever i am doing, open up the bluetooth hardware interface from PC settings and un-pair/re-pair whatever mouse i am using.
I only have a single mouse paired at any single time, i have used several sets of brand-new batteries from different manufactures and containers.
Immediately before the mouse unpairs after the process is initiated, approximately 65% of the time, the cursor will bounce around the screen as if it were "catching up" and dumping whatever movements were "stored" by the computer before unpairing completely.
I have tested this several times by moving my mouse diagonally in a single random direction repeatedly immediately after the cursor stops moving. The apaprent "catching up" actually IS "catching up" as the random movements mimic whatever motions i made with the mouse immediately after it stops functioning, untill i forcefully un-pair it from the machine.
I need help with this, because having to un-pair/re-pair my mouse every hour or two or three is getting to be extremely frustrating. -
Notebook reliably locks up completely - cold restart required
I have a Fujitsu P7120 notebook. I bought it used several years ago and I love it, despite its age. It was very reliable and stable...but a bit slow. I decided to upgrade the stock 4400RPM drive with an SSD (http://www.kingspec.com/solid-state-dis … f-mlcj.htm), and that's where the problems started.
Honestly, I don't know if the problem is the SSD, but I never had this problem before.
Now, after powering up just fine, the notebook WILL freeze. I can't say when. Sometimes, it's just a few minutes. Sometimes hours. But always less than a day. It freezes hard. Only a complete cold restart will work.
It's VERY frustrating. The SSD is MUCH faster. It has given a new lease on life to this fanless wonder.
I've installed from scratch more than once, and did a complete fsck of the drive. None of it helps. Since this problem didn't exist before I installed the SSD, I suspect that this is the problem.
My install is a standard Arch install with X and OpenBox WM and Grub bootloader. I've read a bit about the new GPT partition table replacement. Might this help?
Does anyone have any suggestions?Just wanted to add onto this that I have the exact same problem. I've got Arch (well, ArchBang - I'll be doing a plain Arch install soon to see if that's somehow the problem) installed on an Asus G73JH. Wonderful machine, everything works like a dream, except for it hard locking every now and then. Now, this baby has a 600GB 7200RPM HDD in it, so this problem might not be strictly related to your SSD - unless the causes are completely separate and unrelated, which is always possible. I'll try to get some more detailed information up here when I have some more time, but right now it's crunch time, and I just wanted to post a quick "me too!" while I had time.

Microsoft Access database randomly locks itself??!
Hi there
Our Access database is doing something weird. Every so often
(I think when we've had a busy day in terms of traffic) a .ldb file
randomly appears in the directory where our database file resides.
Whilst this .ldb file is in existance the CF application can't read
(or write) to the database and thus eventually CF times out and
returns an error (or the user's browser gives up and displays a 404
error).
Sometimes this .ldb file dissapears of it's own accord after
a second or so, but at other times it doesn't go away again and we
have to restart the server.
- not ideal!
does anyone know why this occurs?
I've heard that running a deliberatly bad query (ie selecting
from a non-existant table) can 'clear' this .ldb file - in fact we
went as so far as to run such a query every 10 mintues as a
scheduled task as a preventative measure - and although it 'feels'
like this may have helped, we do still get these random .ldb files
appearing every now and then and thus we have to restart the server
our site is getting busier (450,000 page impressions last
month) so maybe we need to migrate to a new database (mySQL
perhaps?)
however we don't want to go through all the pain of migrating
to another database (is that hard to do?) only to find that wasn't
the cause of our problem.
any input would be very gratefully received.
thank you very much.On 11/8 SafariTECH responded: "Access should never be used
for a production site - it is a desktop database, not a server
database." It IS a "desktop" database and NOT a "server" database,
but that doesn't disqualify it from being used for a production
site.
At our company we have extensive (multiple-year) experience
with Access on the back-end, and if you take the time to understand
its limitations and account for them in your code, it can be used
successfully. When we choose between Access or SQL Server on the
back-end, it is based on expected traffic, ease of maintenance,
footprint, and so on. In most cases we DO end up using SQL Server,
but there are circumstances where Access -- even as a "desktop"
database -- has proved a better choice.
In a recent system we built, access to the web server and
ColdFusion had to be extremely limited upon system deployment. No
VPN, no modem, and a special arrangement with a third party to gain
physical access. To minimize the system footprint while designing
for completely-hands-off, 24x7 operation, we needed a pair of
servers with shadowing and automatic failover if the primary system
died. If we had chosen SQL Server, it would have required its own
server box, and we would have had to double these up as well. This
costs more money and adds yet more complexity.
Given what we knew would be the traffic through the
dedicated, private site with a handful of users at any one time, we
decided that a server-class DB was unnecessary, and in any case,
would force us to add hardware that itself could be a source of
system failure. This was the deciding point in favor of Access.
All aspects of the system that directly relate to Access have
been running successfully, except the issue reported initially by
happysailingguide. We experienced the same issue, which appears to
be a ColdFusion-induced error, and not something inherent to Access
or the fact that it's a desktop database. (Based on what evidence?
We use Access in many automated telephone applications which are
written in Perl instead of ColdFusion, and this problem has NEVER
been seen in the 5+ years of production usage.) In our case it
appears there are NO requests queued to Access at the time of the
lockup, and the lock can last forever unless we take programmatic
intervention.
As anybody who has built and deployed many production sites
knows, you must simply accept the fact that no hardware or software
is error-free (yours or anybody else's). The described Access
lockup is just one of these errors (and is probably pretty low on
Adobe's list of things to fix). With a different DB there wouldn't
be the same problem, but there would be another to take its place,
perhaps increased system failures because of the increased
complexity of the system, or the downside of greatly increased
costs when replicating the system.
When I was trying to decide on the Access vs SQL Server
question a couple years ago, I read the forums and web discussions
about how Access should never be used for a production site. There
were many scary statements about Access that nearly prevented me
from using it. But at the advice of a colleague who has used Access
for several years in a telephony app with 100 or more simultaneous
callers, I stared a little more at the timestamps on the
statements, and found they were from a long time ago (in
computer-years). Microsoft has made MANY improvements to Access
over time. For anybody facing the same decision, you will find it
worthwhile to consider Access if cost, complexity, and footprint
are important factors.

When is Firefox going to stop hogging my system??
Firefox constantly drains my RAM and CPU memory. I have 2GB of RAM and it dares to use over 1GB of that. I have a AMD 5200 processor and it dares to use over 50% of that. It's doing this constantly and I'm not the only one who has this problem. When
