Archlinux setup on Toshiba r100

Hi guys,
I have a problem, i would install arch on a toshiba r100 (subnotebook) but i have no cd rom on this laptop so i would use a usb pendrive to install it.
The problem is that i couldn't create a bootable image on my usb pendrive, i tried with some tutorial in the wiki but when i reboot my pc with usb as first boot option i obtain a phrase like "Missing Operating system" and the system freeze.
Please help me.

Searching on the web, most results I found lead to this page, where it is said that the problem is due to badly tuned overcurrent protection, and advocated that unplugging and switching off the computer for a little while gets things back into normal. This does not really work for me; the problem seems to occur more randomly, unfortunately with high probability (my camera is available after less than one boot out of ten).
I tried to ensure that the ehci-hcd module is loaded at boot with the ignore-oc option (with a file in /etc/module-load.d/), to no avail.
I also wrote a script which alternatively removes and reloads the ehci-pci driver until my device is found in lsusb. It is sometimes helpful, but usually not. And even when my device is found that way, it can only be used for a while before disappearing again.
Anyway, such a hack is unacceptable... So, my questions are:
is it indeed related to overcurrent protection ?
is there anything else I can try ?
should I file somewhere an other of the numerous bug reports about "unable to enumerate USB device" already existing ?
If of any importance, I am running linux 3.15.7, because at the time I installed my system, I couldn't get the hybrid graphic card Intel/AMD working under 3.16.

• Portege R100: Solution how to restore the unit without using a CD-ROM drive

I have just re-stored my Toshiba R100 after nearly 3 years of owning it without a single format due to the complexities of getting a working bootable CD-ROM drive.
This won't help those of you who have a non booting laptop but if yours is booting I used the following method to re-store my laptop with zero problems.
1. Put the restore CDs into another computer and extract the Ghost image files "01131000.GHO" and "01131000.CRC" from disk 1 and "01131001.GHS" from disk 2.
2. If your laptop has a second partition then transfer these files to a directory on your non windows partition. If not you will have to use partition magic to create one.
3. Create a Norton Ghost boot disk from a retail version of Norton ghost and a Windows 98 Boot disk.
4. Boot the Laptop from the Windows 98 Floppy disk, then swap disks and run Ghost.
5. Select Local>Local Disk>From Image
And select the 01131000.GHO file.
6. Select the only image offered to you, then select the R100?s drive, and finally select the main boot partition.
7. Hit go!
8. Re-boot and follow the windows configuration and you're done.

Hi George.
Thanks for your useful description.

• Why won't these files run on my Archlinux?

I wasn't really sure which category to post this in.
Anyway I'm trying to run the files in the bin/ directory of the archive I've uploaded here:
http://www.filedropper.com/jaglinuxtools
On Archlinux all I get is:
bash: ./aln: cannot execute binary file
and so on for the other three files.
I can boot up a live CD of another Linux distribution (kubuntu in this case), mount my Linux partition, and run the files from the same directory, and they all behave as they're supposed to.
What's the deal here? I'm sure my permissions are set up correctly in Archlinux. I've chmodded the files with an a+x on my machine and I even setuid/setgid on the suggestion of someone from the Atari Jaguar forums. That archive has the original files with unmodified permissions, by the way.
Anyone have any clue why this isn't working on my Archlinux? Does it work on any of your Archlinux setups either?

Actually come to think of it, back when I was running i686 the files did work the first time I used them, but I did a pacman -Syu shortly afterward and after that they started giving this error about not being able to execute them. It would make sense if the official Archlinux kernel options were changed to exclude this type of binary between my upgrades at that time.

• Portege R100 strange error code

Hello,
I closed my toshiba r100 and it does not want to boot up any more. When i turn it on, screen is blank, fan is turning with full speed, and the mains led flashes (on for 1 sec, off for 1 sec)... this code does not exists in the service manual which i managed to download... any suggestions?
is the hard reset just holding the power button for say a minute without the battery and mains?
Thanks for help!

i managed to find this:

Cycle of 2 seconds
"ON" 1 second, "OFF" 1 second

Any ideas how to fix it?
I tried to clear the CMOS by taking the batter out for about an hour.

• Network key for wifi, not password

I am trying to set up a new iphone on my verizon account. I backed up the old iphone on the icloud first. Now I can't activate the new one without a wifi connection, but it won't give me the option to use a network key instead of a password to connect to my home wifi. We don't have a password, we have a network key, and if I try to input the network key like with all my other devices into the password bar, it doesn't work.
How do I input a network key?

• Samba timeout when trying to connect to a computer in a workgroup

Hello, seems like the best section to post this in...
Right after I installed my Archlinux setup, I spent a bunch of time trying to get samba running perfectly, mainly, it was just so that other (window$) computers could access mine. Upon getting it working perfectly, both ways, I didn't use it for a while (which is typically the case).
So today, I need to transfer lots and lots of data, but via Dolphin, browsing the workgroup (which I clicked), lists all the computers that are there, including my own (this).
That's good so far, but after I browse to one of those computers (even my own!!), shortly thereafter, I receive a timeout error.
I have tried restarting the samba daemon, netfs, I also tried stopping network manager, and starting the network daemon myself, hoping it was network manager's brokenness that was the problem. Nope.
Still left in this situation...and nothing that I can remember, has changed since the last time, I didn't screw with config files or anything. Although, I do think I changed routers between this time, I also remember seeing some updates for samba-related packages.
All out of ideas, I posted here.
I can post my smb.conf file..or anything else for that matter, if you want. I just want this problem to be solved, and currently am forced to boot into window$ to transfer lots of data. Naturally, I can't do anything during this time, when not in linux....and it kills me a little bit more each time I have to see it
EDIT: Also note that, I tried using the default config, but I still get timeouts(and restarting samba daemon of course). With 'smbtree', it lists all of the shares available on the workgroup also. I also use the gamin program, as opposed to FAM. Originally, I followed the wiki, and that was how I get it working in the first place, but no longer does it work correctly. The logs in /var/log/samba/ do not show anything interesting, and in fact, only show about 1-2 lines, just saying that it started..
I also had it say about a firewall possibly being in use, but on a reload/retry, it returns to a timeout error. I do not have any firewalls that I am aware of, on.
Update: Well I figured out if I run the following command: smbclient '\\NAS\Data' that I will then be taken to a prompt where I can do ls, cd, etc, and browse that share perfectly. What's going on here? Dolphin still times out on it and I would prefer to use a GUI for this..

Well I decided to try to use 'smb4k', which I just recently found, it also sees all of the computers on my network, but it also sees their shares after I browse into it. Unfortunately, it fails to mount any of them...
"mount error: could not resolve address for NAS: Name or service not known
No ip address specified and hostname not found"
That is the message I receive after clicking (mounting) on one of the shares of the 'NAS' computer, the one on my network.
Perhaps this error will make things a bit more clear?
I've been even looking at the docs at samba.org, trying to debug this issue...
UPDATE: Seem to have limited the problem down, at least now I can mount a share on a computer but *only* if I specify the IP address manually.
So it appears that it cannot resolve the name of said computer/share, to an IP... what could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

• Qosmio G30 freezes upon Norton Internet Security 2008 startup

Norton Internet Security 2008 will freeze my computer as soon it tries to load and the only way to go on is to restart the system by pressing the on/off-button.
My notebook is a Toshiba Qosmio G30-177 (Model No. PQG32E-02G022GR) with Vista Ultimate and NIS2007 pre-installed. I have no problems with this NIS2008 version on my other notebook (Qosmio F10 - PQF10E-02300JGR, WinXP MCE).
NIS2007 runs fine on my G30 and I do not have any problems at all, but newer versions of NIS seem to get in conflict with my system:
1. I am able to install and run the new version, download all updates and adjust the settings. Maybe one or two days later my computer will freeze after start exactly when the tray icon of NIS appears. For a couple of seconds there is just no response of the system at all and the LED's of my notebook show that all HD activity has stopped. After being idle for these couple of seconds, the cooling fan will start to operate at maximum power, creating a tremendous noise I never experienced before, not even while the CPU was running at 100% for some time due to other programs. Forcing a restart is all I can do.
2. Now this time, I successfully restarted my notebook again (took some attempts) and it suddenly did not freeze. Then I disabled firewall and auto-protect permanently, so there was no freezing upon startup and I just had to manually activate both firewall and auto-protect after start. In order to prevent freezing again after reboot, I always disabled NIS before shutdown. For the next one or two days this workaround was quite successful.
3. All of a sudden, after one or two days, this workaround is going to become useless, because the system starts to freeze again at the very moment the tray icon appears. In this case, restarting has no effect at all, and NIS will continue to freeze at startup. I also tried to prevent NIS form starting by no longer allowing ccApp.exe to automatically run upon start (administrative tools > system configuration > "startup" tab). This is successful and my notebook is able to start normally, but if I later try to start NIS manually, it will freeze again.
I had this problem since NIS2008 was just released, so I thought that meanwhile a Windows or Norton update might have fixed the issue, but this weekend I gave NIS2008 another try without success. I am almost sure that the problem is not caused by any other software than Windows and/or Norton, because I also tried to install NIS after a full system recovery, thus having only pre-installed NIS2007 and Vista on my notebook. I did use the Norton removal tool and followed the deinstall instructions before trying to install the newer version of course.
My last hope was that the NIS2009beta version somehow would not freeze my system, but it does. It does not matter if I try to run 2008 or 2009beta version, the problem is exactly the same.
What really drives me almost crazy is the fact that NIS runs perfectly for some time, then needs a rather small workaround, and then after some time totally refuses to work. In these couple of days I did not change any system settings, install or deinstall any programs or did anything that I felt could conflict with NIS...
So far, I have no idea of a solution and have to use NIS2007 again.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

Hi !
I use NIS since 2001 and never had any serious trouble with this software.
There could be some compatibility problem, but I don't think that Vista is causing it, because otherwise a lot more people should have the same problem. Even the installation of all current Windows, NIS and Qosmio updates did not solve it. Of course I tried to get help using Symantec's Support and their user forums, but without success. This problem seems to be a rare one (unfortunately for me). I tested the NIS2009beta and even though it's a new version, the PC freezes again when this program starts. And this made me think that maybe a service or setup by Toshiba causes the problem and other Vista users are not affected. It's a strange thing that the pre-installed NIS2007 version is running fine...
Cheers,
Mario

There are no good or bad drivers. Maybe you do something wrong.
The fact is that all drivers listed on Toshiba support page are absolutely the same as in recovery image. So there is no difference and all of them can be used on every Vista version.

• Instantiating a form as different views and merging them at the end of the workflow.

Hi,
I have a big doubt in implementing one of the crucial part of our workflow design. It goes like this.
1.we have a form which is mainly classified into five types and a total of 16 subforms.
2.the five types in which the form is divided is based on the approver and the type. of requests.
3.different views of the whole same form have to be sent to the five approvers.
4.once the approvers approve the request,a wait point must be present in the workflow, where it will wait for all the views of the form (which are approved) and must merge them into one single pdf form ie., the original form.
so the change in the views of the total form must be reflected in the main form at the end while it is merging.
also all the views of the form are to be merged in to one for the sake of arhiving and rendering it to pdf.
so my questions are..
1.How to add multiple views of the main form (xdp) in the workflow separately as individual xdp templates(based on the five types i mentioned)?
2.How to merge the form views again in to single form or how to make the changes reflect in the main from when changes are made in their views.?
thank u..

• My Dual-Boot Adventures

The saga goes like this... (grab a hot, foamy latte, sit back and read -- go ahead -- take a couple of minutes to live my rollercoaster of emotions)...
I've got a dead PC laptop graveyard brewing in my living room corner. The latest addition is a cool little Toshiba R100. Two pounds light, it's been a great little workhorse: 256mb of RAM, 20gb HD, running XP Pro. But the screen has started to dima little after 2 1/2 years... my little baby is tired. I decided to go ahead and put the DNR sign on her, and relegate her to the graveyard.
SO then came my dilemma. I'm primarily Mac in my own little world, but as a consultant I am often forced to work within the PC world. And then came along the MacBook Pro with the Intel chip... eyebrows raised, and then Apple releases Boot Camp.
I barely dodged the Army recruiters in high school cause I was afraid of Boot Camp -- but now, at 41, I regret being afraid of what Boot Camp really offered: discipline, diligence, motivation, and a strong desire to achieve.
Now, Apple was allowing me to re-join Boot Camp at my advanced age.
I sauntered into the Apple Store this weekend, convinced I was ready to sign on the dotted line... the Mastercard dotted line that is.
I had done my research... the shiny new Toshiba Tablet Laptop with all the whizbangs was $1999.00 at Best Buy. A MacBook Pro outfitted to run both OSX and XP would cost close to $4000.00 out the store:
MacBook Pro with 2gb RAM, 100gb HD, 2.16 Intel Duo Core $3000.00 + the freshly minted copy of XPSP2 I'd need would set me back $300.00. Then you add the AppleCare and extra power adapter, tax, and you're close to 4grand.
I weighed the difference: 2 separate laptops to keep track of, or the promise of an ALL IN ONE! Simply dual-boot, and all your problems are solved. One computer, will travel!
My wife had to be put out of the picture, so I scurried her off to the Giants game. No way she would be a part of this, and she opposed it from the start. It's countless the bedroom arguments that Steve Jobs has caused... does he even imagine?
So in the store, the Apple Dude is well-informed. He did tell me, however, that if I wanted to see Boot Camp in operation, I'd have to go to Circuit City -- since the Apple Stores expressly forbid BETA software on their demo machines, and, of course, Apple will not even consider having a machine with XP running in the store. He also stated that since it was Beta software, they wouldn't support it -- basically, the machines CAN DO IT, but I'm on my own...
He promised to quickly upgrade the in the store machine to 2gb of RAM if I purchase there, however, he said I could order it online custom if I wanted.
He also said to forget about the built-in iSight, bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and possibly some other little gadgets running under Windows.
So I bought it... holding my breath at the cashier stand... hoping the credit card would authorize... he also convinced me to get the free iPod Nano and Printer, since I convinced HIM to give me the educational discount... I was currently in an online wine-tasting class.. he bought it, and quickly took about $700 off the total!
So I get the little silver sucker home, and fire her up. I made the mistake of transferring my G4 stuff over first. That was 50gb and 3 hours later before I could get to Boot Camp.
When I got to Boot Camp, it all started out real nifty. I was sure to PRINT OUT the Install PDF (I highly encourage this), and away I went. The download was painless, and I didn't need a firmware upgrade. The first message came to me quickly however... Boot Camp told me it couldn't partition the drive. I had chosen 30GB for Windows. BC said the disc needed repair. So I had to boot from the OSX install CD, and run Disk Utility. Disk Utility repaired something, and BC then did the partition! Woo-hoo. I wiped the sweat from mt forebrow - I had a successful partition.
Next came the install of Windows. I inserted the XPSP2 Cd, and away we went. About 50% through the install came the blue screen of death. Something about an installation cab being corrupt. I panicked cause the EJECT button didn't work (Windows wasn't installed... nothing to recognize the CD)... so I restarted the installation again. Same blue screen of death.
By this time, my wife was home from the Giants game, and I was hunkered over my little silver monster, in the dark, oblivious to it now being Saturday NIGHT!
She looked at me in disgust, and muttered something about it's either me or Apple as she stormed out...
I continued with my panic about.. how do I get the CD out to return to the world of OSX, cause on every restart the machine tried to boot teh XPSP2 CD. I referred to the BC PDF printout, and it told me to hold down the mouse button to eject the CD. Cool.
So I restarted, and forgot to hold down the mouse button ... BUT ... I didn't get the blue screen of death. I had jostled the computer a bit, so maybe that caused the CD to spind differently, and it continued.
So after about 45 minutes, Windows was installed. I rand the BC Mac drivers Disk, and Windows froze. Had to restart.
Did that a couple of times, and it seemed to take finally.
I'm in Windows now, have done some updates... get a lot of fatal driver errors, and MSN 7.5 causes a major blue screen of death.
I am typing this with the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and using the Apple Bluetooth mouse... although the mouse sometimes tracks funny.
I've installed all the Adobe software, Macromedia software, Firefox, and some other stuff without too many issues.
Photoshop CS2 is BLAZING fast.
The wireless is great, picked right up, the networking works fine... I'm using the DVI out to a 23" Apple Cinema Display, and it's working fine, except every now and then the screen freezes for a milisecond. I think this screen is causing the persistent driver errors.
I'm not sorry I did it, I think it's absolutely cool to have 2 OS's on one MAC!!
It wasn't a SMOOTH install, but with a little luck I was able to weave my way through.
I'm 4 days in, we'll see how it goes...

• How to recover only the C drive on a Satellite P200-1FJ

Hi, I have a Satellite P200-1FJ and I want to recover Vista but only on my first partition.
My HDD is divided in 3 partitions and I don't want to loose data. How can I recover only the C partition using the Product Recovery CD that came with my laptop ?

Hi,
There's a specific order in which the downloads will need to be installed. When the flash cards are installed they interact with the Toshiba Product Information tool that is present on the machine; should this not be installed then it will return an error as it thinks the machine is not a Toshiba.
The downloads you need to install (in order) are:
TOSHIBA Value Added Package
TOSHIBA Flash Cards Support Utility
TOSHIBA Hardware Setup Utility
TOSHIBA Supervisor Password
TOSHIBA SD Memory Utilities
TOSHIBA ConfigFree
TOSHIBA Assist
What I would recommend is removing whatever Toshiba software you have installed first and then try it in that order and see what happens :)
Let me know how you get on,
Regards,
Nukey
