Aspect ratio out of wack on TV

When im watching movies ect on my TV from my ipod it seems abnout 50% of the videos are out of wack for exp, il be watching the video "One man band" it would only display "e man ba" on the title menu. The Same with caption when switching from dif scenes in BattleStar Galictica it would be a 2 setence caption on the bottom of the screen but it would only display 1 setence.
The Tv we have been watching these on has been a 42inch HDTV widescreen. Now on this TV ive tryed every possible dif display combo and ive also tryed all 3 dif video options on the ipod itself with no luck.
Also can someone PLEASE give me apples support phone # ive looked for it everywere and i just want to talk with a person rather then makeing a post =p.

    I find occasionally when I import a movie into Logic 9 the aspect ratio goes out of whack. The same clip opens fine in Quicktime. I can uncheck 'Keep Aspect Ratio' in the video settings and rough the ratio into something that looks normal again but I have to do the same thing everytime I open the project. Is there a way to work around that?

    I have a similar problem with clips shot in "cinema" mode in a JVC camcorder. I have been able to edit them in the older iMovie HD version, but not in iMovie 09. If Apple doesn't address this problem, I'm not going to have much use for the 09 version, which is too bad because it has desirable features.
    If anyone has found a work-around, please let us know.

    Hi,
    I'm think of getting the Apple Video adaptor for use with my Sony Widescreen TV. As I understand it, this adaptor outputs an S-video signal that mirrors the iMac's built-in display.
    Will this display in true widescreen on my TV or will it be in a 4:3 aspect ratio? Is there a way of choosing between the two?

    What I really want to know is: will my iMac output s-Video that is anamorphic widescreen. i.e. will I be able to fill my TV's screen without "stretching" a 4:3 image?
    Or, is the iMac's s-Video out limited to Standard PAL or NTSC 4:3 without support for anamorphic enhancement?
    I know that the iMac supports 4:3 and 16:10, but widescreen TVs are 16:9.

  • Figure out cropped photo's new Aspect Ratio

    I am looking to get a custom sized metal print of a photo that I cropped in Lightroom.  For custom sizes, the printing software requires that I enter the height/width in inches.  How can I figure this out in Lightroom?
    I know that, in the crop window, I can select a certain or enter a custom aspect ratio and it will constrain the crop box to that aspect ratio.  But how do I do the opposite?  That is, when I free-hand crop using the crop tool, have it tell me what the aspect ratio the photo now falls into is, even if it involves decimals?

    The Info Overlay (toggle "I") can be set up to show you the post-crop dimensions in pixels. The same information can be had in the Metadata panel in the Library module. If you know the pixels and the pixels per inch (ppi) at which it will be printed, the size in inches is easy math. If you really want the aspect ratio (which is long side divided by short side), do the division yourself. A 3155x3786 pixels image has a ratio of 1:1.2 or 5:6 and at 300 ppi would make a 10.517 x 12.62 inch print.

  • Aspect Ratio options - why locked out?

    I have a DV project shot in anamorphic widescreen, so (as I understand it) it's 720x480 with non-square pixels. It's in Avid Xpress Pro HD. Of course this footage appears vertically stretched on a standard TV so I want to burn a DVD that will automatically letterbox the image on a standard TV.
    After importing to Encore (using QT .mov files for the moment) the footage is obviously not being treated as 'widescreen' and the resulting DVD is not letterboxed - it's stretched vertically. My first attempt was to 'specify the screen aspect ratio' of that asset as the user's guide describes: selecting the asset, using File > Interpret Footage. But this is grayed out in the File menu!
    Next I tried to put the clip into the timeline and change the timeline's aspect ratio (in the properties pane, there are radio controls for 4:3 and 16:9). But these options are grayed out also!
    Looking at the clip while editing transcode presets, Encore seems to know that the footage should be widescreen... When the 'Source' tab is selected, it's vertically stretched. When the 'Output' tab is selected, there is letterboxing visible, and when selecting '1:1 Pixel Preview' the footage gets even more vertically compressed and looks fine. So why doesn't this work later in the process? Thanks if anyone can help.

    I've run axcross this one recently with MOV files from FCP as well.
    Load the exported MOV file up into Premiere and it tells me the PAR is 0.9, which is wrong.
    This was with a 10 bit uncompressed Blackmagic encode, and even in QT Pro it still displayed vertically stretched.
    I solved the problem by encoding to MPEG-2 out of CCE SP and setting the export flag to 16:9.
    When imported into Encore "As Is", you cannot get this to work.
    Alternatives:
    1 - Encode to MPEG-2 externally, as long as the MPEG encoder understands the Mac format video file.
    2 - Re-encode the file from Premiere Pro.
    Import into PPro, and interpret the footage to the correct PAR, then export out as an uncompressed AVI file if you wish to avoid a DV codec, or else export out of PPro as an MPEG-2 clip - but do not forget to interpret the footagefirst, or all you will get is a vertically stretched clip with black bars either side.
    Macs?

    I have completed my project in FCP 7 and I am trying to send it to a film festival. They need it to be a 1:77:1 aspect ratio-I think they mean 1:78 aspect ratio. I tried to analyze the clip but I don't see any aspect ration listed. Also how would I change the aspect ration on my project I already finished? Use Compressor?

    So what are your sequence settings?  If you're material was shot within the last few years, it's almost definitely 16:9 (also known as 1.77:1).

    I have been working for a while on a project in CS4. I have created a sequence in it with an aspect ratio (AR) of 4:3 - worked for hours on it - but I should had the sequence created instead in 16:9. I realised it a bit too late...
    So how do I fix it?
    Apparently amending the sequence setting for AR cannot be done - please let me know if there is any way of doing this.
    Someone suggested editing the PRPROJ file of the project - but when I opened it I was unable to detect under the sequence name (I found a few entries with it) where I can easily change the sequence to 16:9.
    So then I found people suggesting I copy/paste all the assets from the sequence into a new one that is correctly configured with 16:9. When I did this - CTRL+A and Copy, then paste into a new sequence in the same project - it copied all the clips and I think also all the transitions. But the key element that it did not copy over were all the changes I have done to the sound - I have been editing via the sound mixer (in Write mode) the sound, and then also made changes to the master track volume levels. These were not copied over.
    I really don't want to have to do the mixing all over again. If someone can explain how I can fix the problem in any way I would be most thankful.
    While I am here asking - another 2 small questions that have been bugging me:
    How I can copy and paste volume keyframes from either the master track or a clip and apply it on another clip/section of the clip that would be very helpful. This would for example be useful if I am able to find a certain volume level that I would like to apply to the desired section without the need to sit and "record" (using the Write function) those settings on the desired area. If there is any means to apply the properties on audio track this way - that would be really useful and time saving.
    A best practice hint: when you try and create a sound level for a project - what PC volume level setting do you set in your PC that you use as a benchmark by which we then work out the sound level that would be created in the project? Obviously if I push my PC volume al the way up I would probably mix my sound in the project too low. And if I set the PC volume too low - than I would probably be setting the overall sound level too high and get distortion. As the movies I created would be burnt onto a DVD - what is the volume level on the PC (if there is any means of establishing a standard volume) that I need to match first before I go and figure out what level of sound the finished DVD would have? Of course I can work on say a 50% and then apply gains and volume increases based on that 50% of the max sound my PC plays out. But that sounds pretty much like a random setting and not optimised for other devices.

    Your tip saved me a lot of time indeed....!
    So I created a new sequence, made sure it was 16:9, copy pasted all of the assets, but then had to do the following:
    1. Copy/Paste Attributes for all the video clips (these do not transfer);
    2. As you suggested used the whole of the old sequence as a nested sequence in the new one, eliminating the video altogether.
    I still had a nagging issue that the project would not render or export well - but that turned out to be an issue with rendeiring large files (the video was an uncut clip of almost 10GB, andother of 6GB). Splicing these into 10 minute segments and rendering them separately did the trick.
    It's ben amlong Xmas weekend and endless hours spendt on this project. Yaikes!

  • Can you help me solve my aspect ratio issue?

    Hey guys,
    I'm posting this in hopes that someone can help me solve an aspect ratio issue with a project that I have to finish by tomorrow.
    I'm trying to avoid having to re-edit the entire thing.
    I shot the project with my Nikon D7000 DSLR. in 720p 30p (29.97)
    I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (the trial version).  I have the full version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
    The reason I was working with the trial is that CS3 can't handle the H.264 MOVs that the D7000 records.
    You can work with a timeline, but if you try to export anything, it never works.  I always have to convert my footage to ProRes MOVs with MPEG Streamclip before I can work with them is CS3.  That takes a lot of time and a lot of hard drive space.  After much research, I found out that CS5 is the way to go for DSLR footage.  I just need to save up my pennies for the upgrade.
    So I thought I'd edit this short (1 minute) project with the trial to see how CS5 works with the D7000 footage.
    Upon installing the trial program, I found that the project presets were limited.  I knew this ahead of time because it's clearly stated on the Adobe's website.
    But I wasn't aware how limited they are.
    Since "DSLR 1280x720p 30p" is not an option with the trial, I was going to use HDV 720p 30p.  But that was not an option either!
    So basically, my only option for 16x9 30p was "DV NTSC Widescreen".  It's my understanding that this is 864x480 (in square pixel aspect ratio) or 720x480  (in widescreen pixel aspect ratio)   I needed the output file to be 864x486.  I downsized the footage to 69% in the "Video Effects: Motion" setting so it looked correct in the project.  I didn't think about those extra 6 pixels until I outputed the file and saw thin black lines on the top and bottom.  My guess is that Premiere is adding black pixels because my project is technically 720x480 (1.2121)
    Any thoughts on how I can get a clean 864x486 export?  I'd rather not re-edit the whole thing...which I would have to do in CS3 after I spent a few hours converting the original files in MPEG Streamclip.  I don't know if there is a way to export something out of CS5 and then open a new project in CS3 to make this work.

    On export, just crop a few pixels off of each side; that'll let the image scale correctly to the output frame size without black bars.
    I'm not running the trial, but you should still be able to create a custom sequence preset using the Desktop editing mode. Just switch over to the General tab when you create a new sequence, and choose "Desktop" from the editing modes. Set the rest of the parameters as you need them.
    Even easier: once you've imported your footage, just drag a clip to the New Item icon at the bottom of the project panel; a sequence will be created matching your footage parameters. You can edit at full-resolution, and then export to your desired frame size when complete--you'll probably still need to crop a few pixels (in the Export Settings window) to eliminate the black bars.

    Hi folks I have searched around quite a bit but I need more specific advice based my situation...I am editing a docu about Japanese biker gangs shot on several different SD cameras:
    MY FOOTAGE
    1.Sony Vx-2000 fitted with a  Century Optics 16:9 converter lens bayonet mounted
    2.Canon Xl2 shot in 16:9 mode
    But I also have:
    ARCHIVAL/ACQUIRED FOOTAGE
    1. Contributor's camera SD 4:3 aspect ratio
    2.Contributor's camera SD 16:9 aspect ratio
    3. Transferred from VHS into SD 4:3 aspect ratio
    I would like to standardize the aspect ratio for the project but I am getting confused as sometimes the footage shot on the sony (which should be true 16:9) appears elongated vertically at times.
    Are my settings off?
    Also, I have "title safe" wireframe on in the Canvas and the images all exceed the outer box. I don't have a TV so it's hard to check what (if anything) gets
    lost. I guees most TVs can handle 16:9 without letterboxing....
    Do I have to worry about that? Which box should I crop to if I letterbox? The out or inner? Or the outside of the screen? Should I just letterbox the whole project?
    BTW eventually I am planning on Uprezing the project to HD using Magic Bullet when outputting.
    The overall question is: Who has experience dealing with multiple aspect ratios in one timeline? Can you offer any advice on a work flow to output successfully?

    Sorry to butt in, haven't read the entire thread.
    Suggest you plan from the beginning to create one timeline but encode for two separate output formats.
    Standard procedure for bringing multiple formats is to convert them to a single format as they are ingested. Decide early what the timeline format will be and transcode everything to that codec before anything is brought into the timeline.
    When your project goesgolden, export a single self-contained movie and take that to Compressor to create release movies that will be played on Blu-ray, SD  DVD, online, or in Power Point, whatever you need.

    This may or may not depend on your specific work flow. Many "settings' saved to the original file by QT 7 Pro are merely "playback instructions" which may or may not play correctly in other media players while these same settings do work properly when saved/converted to a new file container. In addition, not being a Windows user, I don't know if there are are any significant differences between the Mac and Windows versions of QT 7. In any case, I just took a short sample clip, stored it on my hard drive via Aperture 3, opened the file in QT 7 Pro, rotated the clip in QT 7 Pro, and used the "Save As..." command to store the modified file. This modified file now plays correctly in current versions of the QT 7, MPEG Streamclip, and VLC media players. Have uploaded a copy of this file so you can download it, test playback in various players you normally use, and/or test convert it to your specific AVI audio and video compression formats.

    Can anyone tell me if this is still true with QT Pro, or if there are other solutions for resolving this outside of QT Pro??  I have tried a number of other converters, and found one that rotates, but aspect ratio not retained.
    As indicated above, the file plays correctly for me in various media players and all media "Inspector" windows, including other third party media information utilities, confirm the correct dimensions and aspect ratio as displayed. As to AVI conversion, I test converted the uploaded file to AVI (DivX5/MP3) at original dimensions using VisualHub. (Also tried the VideoMonkey AVI encode but it limited the source 720p file to a 720x480 output and I did not know if you were agreeable to such a restriction.) Suggest you run similar tests with your preferred Windows converters to confirm/refute results on your system.

  • How do I automatically scale a layer to fit a canvas while maintaining the original aspect ratio?

    I'm currently tasked with reformatting 3,000 product images (thumbnail, normal, and large sizes for each) for a new online store. To do that, I'm trying to create a Photoshop (CS6) action that can automate the process as much as possible because I have a hard deadline and not a lot of time to get it all done. Where I'm running into issues is scaling the images automatically once I've used File-->Place. My canvas sizes are all square (670px X 670px, 250px X 250px, and 125px X 125px), but the product images I'm placing on the canvases are almost always rectangular with the height greater than the width at about a 2:3 ratio. I need to scale them so that the image is touching the top and bottom edges of the canvas and the width is adjusted accordingly with the image centered horizontally.
    I found the program below on another thread, but it's not working exactly like I need it to. It mentions "maintain aspect ratio," but when I run it, the image I'm trying to place ends up getting stretched to fill the entire canvas rather than the width adjusting to the height once the height has reached its maximum. I have no experience with JavaScript, so I'm having a difficult time adjusting the code to meet my needs. Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am a writer who is WAY out of his comfort zone.

    Hum Im not sure Im getting you here… Have you looked at Image Processor…?
    Why are you NOT just using Fit Image and canvas size in your actions…?
    These are all built-in to Photoshop.
    If you wanted to do all 3 sizes in the 1 fly-bye then use script to process…
    If you need extra file naming conventions then script would probably be best…
    All of the above should have NO trouble handling your 3k files…

  • What is the fix for constarined crop aspect ratio changing when the image is rotated

    I've migrated through LR 3, 4 and now 5 up to 5.4. I have been able to set a crop aspect ratio and synch pictures to that ratio as well as other editing selections. When I edit a particular picture and rotate it , the aspect ratio has stayed constant - to the value originally selected.I've never had a problem and it has consistantly worked properly even through last weeks editing activities. Now, when I set aspect ratio and then rotate, the aspect ratio really changes. If I go back and reset aspect ratio and select Done, it seems to be ok. This issue seems to perform wrong with portrait orientation but not in the landscape orientation. I have uninstalled LR, gone through registry cleanup, reinstalled LR, claened up the registry but nothing gets better. I do note that the settings aren't totally removed as the reinstalled software wants to pick up where I left it prior to uninstalling. As best as I can tell, all of my settings and preferences are the same as last week. It works on last weeks folders but not on new ones.
    I have now seen many forum write-ups about this problem but have never found any solution. Help - I can't go through life cropping and straightening images sideways.

    Here is a thread that I think addresses this problem.  There were MULTIPLE bugs in the crop tool when Lr5.0 came out, probably due to adding the Upright Tool, but they are slowly getting worked out.  Maybe this one will be fixed in Lr 5.5

  • FCP scaling/aspect ratio motion algorithms make good video soft?

    I have tried everything, but converting 16:9 footage into a 4:3 timeline in Final Cut Pro makes the letter-boxed video soft. I have, of course, double checked against NTSC external broadcast monitor. Original 16:9 clips look great, when converted to letter box 4:3 timeline they go soft. ( I believe it is FCP ineptness in handling Pixel Aspect Ratio conversion from 1.2 to 0.9, but I would love to be wrong at this point) I know FCP has poor scaling algorithms to begin with, but this is a very obnoxious issue when capturing clips widescreen from the deck, but having your final output needing to be edited and taped off in letter-boxed format for SD broadcast.
    I really want to avoid losing any quality when going from 16:9 to 4:3 letter-box, so is there a plugin that can be used to handle the rescaling that does a better job than just FCP by itself? These are pretty complicated edits, (television show) so avoiding having to hop over to After Effects for a second huge render would be preferable. I have exhausted Google looking into this, lol, anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks for the quick response. My motion filtering quality is set to "Best". After looking over the link you provided ( I will examine more thoroughly, but saw your response and wanted to re-post to answer your question.) I also tried switching to "Fastest (linear)" just to see if it would eliminate the softness/possible double lines, but of course, no luck. (Also, just to clarify, this is working all in SD.)
    I would consider using Compressor or (After Effects for that matter), but I am editing using the letter box conversion because we occasionally are mixing in past regular 4:3 footage with the letter boxed 16:9. (the reg 4:3 being a minority of the clips) It is easier just to matte those 4:3 clips to match the converted 16:9 since there are fewer of them. If I fed the timeline to compressor then those clips (the reg. 4:3) would get interpreted incorrectly. I suppose I could just leave them out and re-insert them later, but depending on the number of them and how they are used that could be quite a work-around. It would be great if I could just get FCP to interpret the conversion internally (i.e. plugin) w/out causing quality loss. Sigh.
    Everything else is set to 100%; editing 10- bit uncompressed, 10-bit material in High Precision YUV. I have tried multiple combinations of capture, codecs and vid processing options, but all seem to have the same result.
