Audio - Extracting, Unextracting, Split Edits

Hey, there:
I've used iMovie 3 & 4 in the past for animated photos/slideshows for friends' wedding rehearsals - taking photos and using various fx and Ken Burns effect.
Now I want to add video into the mix - my thought was to use a mix of stills and cut back and forth between them and the video. I've gone ahead and broken-up the video interview (45 minutes) into 40 clips, one for each question/section, and imported all the photos into iPhoto (which crashed every 5-10 minutes due to external editing in Photoshop - nice stablility, Apple!).
My problem is confusion over doing true split edits; I want to be able to:
- arrange the video in logical order, trimming the clips as need be
- adding video title screens to ask questions
(BTW - how to do still, centered titles w/ no fades? I'm doing them in Photoshop for now.)
- overlaying photos on top of video, so that you get:
TITLE -- VIDEO -- PHOTO -- VIDEO, with original video audio underneath, possibly coming in early under the Title Card.
I guess I just want to be able to cut back and forth between photo and video without losing sync,
It seems like the best way may be to use the "paste over at playhead" to insert the stills at the playhead, but this overwrites the original clip and splits the audio. Plus, it takes a ton of time - I'm working on a 2.0 GHz Intel iMac and this is taking 10 minutes to insert a 5-second title into a 30-second video clip!
I've also thought about duplicating all my clips and letting it split the audio on each overnight; I'd then have the originals plus clips with extracted audio, but it won't let me drag the video AND audio into the clip bin, just the video. So, nope.
Also - is there any way of simultaneously trimming a split audio and video? I can do both separately, but it doesn't keep the sync even when I lock the audio. I can drag them when they're locked, but not edit both in sync.
This is completely frustrating - I feel screwed!
Thanks in advance -

Hi, Mark!
I can't answer all of your questions, but whenever I am going to do "paste overs," I always extract the audio from my main track FIRST. It may take awhile depending on the length of your base clip, but I think you'll find this will make your inserts go a LOT faster.
Also, I can't answer this definitively without the application open in front of me, but I think you can do title without fades by simply setting the fade slider for the effect to zero. Alternatively, you can create a regular title complete with fades then, while watching it in the main iMovie window, pause it when your title is showing fully and choose the menu command "CREATE STILL CLIP FROM VIDEO" (I forget which menu header it's under, but it shouldn't be hard to find). Then, you can set the duration of that still to last as long as you'd like.

    Hi Sue,
    Thanks for your reply.
I have zoomed in on the timeline and the audio files are always completely deleted.
I extract audio a lot when making a programme as I feature interviews with inserts pasted over at playhead. It seems the more I do this the more likleyhood of this audio bug occuring randomly. If you had any workaround ideas they would be much appreciated.
I dont use transitions or titles when this fault occurs

  • IMovie 6 Why? audio extract, copy file to external drive, delete problems

Why are these problems occuring in iMovie '06
+the remaining clip, after an audio extract, no longer has audio, and the extraction does not only extract the selected clip, but the whole movie
+copy and paste an iMovie (.iMovieProject) file 10.66G to a 30G external drive results in "error code 1309" and fails to finish copying
+a 10.66G movie where about 99 percent of the clip was deleted still reads as 10.66G even though the clip is only 26 seconds long.
Premature release of program me thinks.

Welcome to iMovie Discussions ..premature posting of question, methinks. (..without, perhaps, having searched for or read any previous discussion of these or similar topics..)
a - This is the iMovie HD (version 5) Discussion ..there's a separate area for iMovie HD 6 ..but I'll still be happy to answer your questions!
1 - When audio is "extracted", the original clip is simply muted, and a copy of the original audio from it is pasted into a separate audio track below the video. Normally, you'd select an individual clip (or clips) from which to extract (Copy) the audio. If nothing specific is selected, then everything may be extracted.
2 - An external drive must be formatted as 'Mac OS Extended' or HFS+ for iMovie to be able to work with files stored there. It may be formatted in PC (Windows) FAT 32 format, and there may be a file size limit in that format which is incompatible with your Mac operating system. See this page of error codes, where "error -1309 fileBoundsErr: file's EOF offset mark or size is too big" ..that means that the End Of File marker is incompatible with what's being copied. Googling will find other info, such as this discussion, which prompts a handy reminder that your external drive must be connected by FireWire, not by USB, for you to be able to edit and play via the external drive: a USB connection isn't consistently fast enough for playing video.
3 - When you delete part of a clip, in iMovie HD (any version) all the rest of the material is still saved, in case you want to Undelete, or make other alterations which need still having access to the original material. [ This is part of the enhanced "non-destructive editing" which was recently introduced into iMovie. In previous versions, when you deleted something, it was irretrievable! ] That's why the full 10.66GB remains. You could 'Share' (Export) just that 26 sec clip to DV, then re-import it as a new clip, and you could then delete the entire original clip, thus regaining the full 10.66GB of space.
So it's not a premature release: it's a considered, robust, thoughtful release, which now incorporates several solid features which make it more reliable than some previous releases.
Once you get to know how - and why - it works the way it does, you may be glad that it does work as it does.
There are still some bugs in it - many to do with "rendering" ..the rewriting of adjusted video, particularly of adjusted still photos within iMovie - but don't judge it just on a quick first glance!
Hope you find it works for you ..it's a great program, I think.

  • Video/Stereo Audio tracks won't edit together

My video and audio tracks no longer edit as a (linked) unit.
For example, when I select a clip in the timeline and apply the razor tool it only affects the video track....then I must also select the audio file and apply the razor tool again.
I notice this is now a condition with any FCP project I open...so I am guessing it is a Preference issue. Somewhere along the path, I must have changed something...but haven't found the way back and I am sure there is a simple solution.
    I am using FCP 4.5
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Your clips are coming into the Timeline unlinked. Click the link toggle button near the upper right corner of the Timeline window and then bring your clips in.

  • Split Edits using Timecode (dashboard) on FCPX 10.0.7 - icons?

Hi! My FCPX 10.0.7 does not show the "roll edit" or "ripple edit" icon in blue on the timecode dashboard, and just shows blue-ed playhead icon. Because of this when I manually enter on the dashboard frame counts to go forward or back at the time of attempting Split edits, the edit point in the time line does not move. Only the pleayhead moves. How so? Is there a way for the dashboard to not show playhead icon?? Please help!
    Thank you!

Please post a screen shot. You select the edit point and type -15. You do NOT click in the dashboard. You simply start typing after the edit is selected and you will see this

    Hi,
I trimmed an audio regin in the audio track edior with "Snap Edits to Zero Crossings" on.
But I zoom in、the waveform was not ended at Zero point.
    Why?
In the audio file editork, "Snap Edits to Zero Crossings" option works fine.

correction needs to be made to step #14, I typed:
    14) Point to the start or end one of the clips, when you see the icon showing arrows going either way, right click and drag your clips to roughly match up with the timeline selection, then zoom in further and adjust the clip start and end points to match up exactly with the timeline selection start and endpoints.
Here is the correction, THE CORRECTED PARTS ARE CAPITALIZED:
    14) Point to the start or end OF one of the clips, when you see the icon showing arrows going either way, LEFT-CLICK and drag your clips to roughly match up with the timeline selection, then zoom in further and adjust the clip start and end points to match up exactly with the timeline selection's start and end points.
    Another Correction:

  • How can I zoom in to audio waveforms for precision edits?

In FCP 7, you can zoom into audio waveforms for precise edits. In FCP X, there seems to be a fairly coarse resolution to how far you can zoom into audio waveforms. I rely extensively on being able to see where subtle aspirants start and end, but I can't see the audio waveforms very clearly, no matter how far I enlarge the clips.
Is there some hidden window or command that I'm missing?

    tonypatti wrote:
I'm assuming you mean in the timeline. So you trim your clips in the timeline, and not in the clips window? I've noticed there is no Viewer window, as in FCP 7, and I used to refine my clips in that window, setting in and out points with simple keystrokes. Is this how we do it in X? In the Timeline window?
It depends on my needs... Each event library-clip has its own timeline too...
All you need to do is right-click the clip in the event library and select "Open in Timeline"
There you can trim the audio or clip with much greater precision than in the event library itself...
In FCPx -- EACH clip in the event library is contained within its own mini-project... That is why you can "open" it in its own timeline... The event library is so powerful in this way. You could even select a clip and hit "Open in Timeline" and drag another clip into that.... That would automatically turn the clip into a compound clip (which is essentially a project)... the possibilities are endless... And so is the zoom ;-)))) If you do it this way !
PS -- You can create a short key for "open in timeline" should you find yourself annoyed with right-clicking all the time
PPS -- You state "no viewer window".... As of 10.0.7 FCPx has TWO viewers.. One for events and one for the project... Hit ctrl+command + 3 to show/hide it...
You should take your time with the app and NOT look at it as if it was FCP7
Also the user guide is very well written !

  • Can't Split Edit - What Am I Doing Wrong?

I have placed a clip on the timeline, with space in front and behind (no potential clip colision). From the timeline I double click to open the clip in the viewer. I roll back (or forwards) a few frames from the in-point to set a split, but all the items in the Mark Split menu are greyed out, and the usual keys don't work.
There's space on the head and tail of the clip and there is no clip colision.
    What am I doing wrong?

as a workflow I'm with Jerry. you seem to be choosing to use a very "linear" edit logic ... still, if you really do prefer to work that way then fcp's split edit functionality should allow you to do so but you are getting it mixed up a bit
you need to mark your edit points, split or otherwise, in the viewer and/or canvas, but not in the viewer window when it is showing a clip already in the timeline
so don't put the clip into the timeline first, double click it in the browser to load it directly to the viewer. mark your split edits as required and then edit to timeline.
or even better, create the splits in the timleine using the roll tool. you'll find it much faster once you get the hang of it

    No.
You need to explore Compound Clips. This workflow may or may not be of help.
Select an Event with clips in it and press Option+G to make a (blank) compound clip.
Select the Event Browser, create a new Event and call it 'Effects'.
Drag the Compound Clip into this Event.
Right-click the clip and select 'Open in Timeline'.
Select the timeline and press Option+W. This will add a Gap Clip to the timeline.
Select the gap clip and press Ctrl+D then type in the duration you want the clip to be.
Now open a project and select and copy one of the clips with effects etc.
Open the Compound Clip in the Timeline again, select the gap clip and press Option+Cmd+V to paste the effects into your Compound Clip.
This clip is now saved in your Browser and will remain there for you to copy and then paste the effects into any clip in any project.
It's a bit clunky, but it works - and once you learn about Compound Clips, you can work wonders with them. As an example, if you want to add more effects without overwriting the effects in the Compound Clip, simply make the Compound Clip into a Compound Clip (again) and add the effects. They will be added to the original effects.

  • How to sync audio to existing multicam edit?

Hi, I have done a multicam edit of my wedding from 4 different angles. SInce there was a lot of background noise, I have cleaned the audio track from one of the clips on an external program and imported it to FCPX.
What's the best way now to sync that audio to the existing edit? I only see options to sync clips in the event browser but that won't affect the timeline edit.
    Your help if appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Tom,
Do you know the best way to set markers when using multi cam clips? Is it better to set the marker to one of the clips before creating the multi cam clip, or set them to the actual multi cam clip?
    Thank you!

    Anyone know what's going on?

  • Post audio extraction

Since extracting the audio, the imovie ( 6.0.1) is herky jerky, the sound is likewise garbled and I lose control over stopping the clip - it takes several seconds- over 10 - to stop the clip.I 'v ehad to force quit everytime.

Sorry, my post was pretty garbled, too! It's late, been wrestling with video all evening...
I have a bunch of iMovie projects, made with '04. Several of them had the audio extracted with '04, because I had the sync problem with iDVD '04.
I just opened these projects with iMovie 6.0.1. The projects where the audio was previously extracted have garbled audio with 6.0.1. I looked at one of the AIFF files in the Media folder, and it is "16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 32.000 kHz". I looked at one of the video files in the Media folder and it shows "DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480, Millions DV, Stereo, 32.000 kHz". The AIFF and video files in the Media folder look/sound fine playing in QT 7. But they are unitelligible, as though playing at wrong sample rate(?), when playing back in iMovie '06.
Any thoughts? It would be a big pain to have to start from scratch.

  • What is the difference between unstack, extract, and split

I want to make a copy of a picture. I used the duplicate option, which does whatever it does and causes them to be linked somehow. I'm trying unstack, extract, and split to try to make the duplicate act as an independent picture.
I'm wanting a second copy to put in another project. Yet when I move any of these duplicates, they all move.
What is the difference between unstack, extract, and split?
How can I move a copy of a pic from one project to another without the original moving?
    Thanks

Yes - you are correct and yes extracting one will make it behave independently but you almost never actually want to do that. What you really want are album picks.
Stacks are extremely useful - here is a little info

  • CD-Rom drive with digital audio extraction support

I am looking to get a Zen Micro for my teenage daughter. The tech specs require a CD-Rom dri've with digital audio extraction support. My older IBM Aptiva, vintage 999, meets all the other requirements. How can I know whether the CD-ROM dri've will work? We are new to MP3 type players.
    JimH

It only needs this to create MP3s from your CDs, and there are many alternati've programs that will do this. I would suggest taking a look at the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net and trying?a couple of the programs there. If they work, chances are that the Creative software will work (but you can always use these as an alternati've).
