Automatically detect a Printer plugged to a serial port?

Hello, is there a way for me to automatically detect with java if a printer is plugged in to a serial port (and if so, which one) on my computer.
I am using javax.comm, but there is no such feature in there.
Thanks in advance.

I am not very familiar with this area but I am 99% sure you wouldn't get a signal to tell you are printer had been plugged in to a serial port.
Your best bet is to spawn a new thread that polls the serial port looking for a new printer.
Not very pretty I admit but it shouldn't be to hard to do.

  • Printing to Parallel or Serial Port Printers Under Mac OS X?

Sorry for this slightly off-topic subject, but I don't felt like adding the topic under the Apple Printer Forum.
I would like to use an Epson Stylus Color II on a G3 running Mac OS X Jaguar, or a G3/BW running Panther. The problem is that Mac OS X does not support printers attached to the serial port, or that the printers are not supported under Mac OS X.
I have a similar issue with my Laserwriter 310 Select, and Imagewriter.
I did some investigating and it seems that there is an alternative between (a) using the printers on a Mac running Classic OS; or (b) using GimpPrint, an adapter Parallel-USB, etc.
The problem is that I have a tight operating budget, and already several Macs running Classic OS. So it would seem reasonable enough to delegate the printing job to those Macs through Ethernet network.
The (b) solution is appealing because it is more straightforward and provides direct Mac OS X operation, which is handy in case you are printing from Mac OS X applications.
I would be grateful for your help and advice, both in terms of finance and hardware. Thank you!

Here's an eBay auction item that has a good picture of PhoneNet adaptors:
    PhoneNet adapters
These are newer Farallons like I have. I have no idea what the "self-terminating locking connectors" are. Maybe Grant knows. Notice that each connector has two phone jacks; you can see the little terminators in a couple of the jacks. These are required if you use only one port. LocalTalk allowed daisy-chaining of computers and devices and that's when you would use both ports.
Here's a listing for an older style Farallon:

I recommend the newer style shown in the first listing; we had some of the old ones at the office quit working. The newer style has been more reliable.
Here is the AAUI-to-ethernet transceiver (adaptor) for older MAcs with only an AAUI port:

I can't find a picture of the Farallon ePrint LocalTalk-to-Ethernet adaptor but the link in my first response shows the currently available unit from Asante. IF you find a Farallon ePrint, make certain it is labeled "LT." There is another with, I think, "SW" that only works with StyleWriter printers.

  • How do I go about setting up my new wireless all-in-one Epson XP-215 printer to my MacBook Pro? The system is not automatically detecting the printer ad the furthest I get is "System" keychain user and pswd but I am a new user to Mac.

I am a new user to Mac and trying to set up an Epson XP-215 All-in-One printer without any success. The Mac Book Pro is not recogising the Printer automatically and when following the instructions to add the printer, it gets as far as a display box for teh user and password for "System" Keychain but I am not sure what info to add there...
The printer is meant to have a function calle dAir Print also that is meant to be used for Mac but I cannot figure out any of this! Why would the MacBook Pro not automatically pic up the printer? Please help...

If you have not already done so, you should read the user manual that came w/the printer and/or contact Epson tech support.

  • Using USB Printer on Beige G3 with Localtalk/Serial Port - How?

I have an Epson Stylus 740 which has both DIN 8/Serial port and USB connections, but the serial quit showing-up, so I want to connect via the USB connector. Is this possible?
Is there an adapter from DIN 8 Serial/Localtalk connector on Beige G3 to USB for Printer?
Or do I need to buy a PCI to USB card?
    Other solution?
    thanks

    Russo:
If you tried to connect an adaptor to the serial port that had a USB connector on the end, it probably won't work since the serial port isn't currently working. You'd need a USB PCI card to connect to the USB.
I have this same printer, originally used the serial port and then switched to USB when I got the PCI card. This has worked great.
You should see if something got turned off. Look at these:
Under the Apple Menu>Control Panel > AppleTalk - make sure the printer port is selected
Under Apple Menu>Control Panel > Remote Access > Modem (from the drop down menu) - make sure that the printer port isn't selected
Under Apple Menu > Control Panel > USB Printer sharing - make sure that is turned OFF.
You might also have to install drivers for the Epson from the disk that came with it. If you insert the CD and choose "custom install" you'll get another screen that allows you to choose the serial driver package.
Post back if you get it working (or don't).

  • Can't detect or print to C8189A All-in-One-Printer on a wired LAN

Computers on my home wired LAN repeatedly but intermittently stop being able to print to the HP C8189A printer attached via wired LAN connection.  I began trouble shooting last night and uninstalled all HP software to start afresh.
I cannot print to my HP C8189A all-in-one printer conected to a wired network from my desktop PC running Windows XP with SP3.  I can see the printer has pulled an IP from the router by looking at the router's attached client list.  I can ping the printer at its assigned LAN IP address.
My desktop pc and the C8189A printer share a common DLINK Gigabit Switch which connects wired wired LAN to the DLINK router.
I uninstalled and reinstalled all HP software but during the HP Solutions Center software reinstall it could not find the PRINTER on the lan, even when inserting the Printer's assigned IP address.
When checking the network configuration from the printer, it confirms that it is has the correct IP address, but the HP software still cannot detect it.  I have pulled the power connector from the back of the power a couple times to RESET the printer.  This usually corrects what is now a terribly frustrating problem accessing the printer.
Additional factoids: 1) other PCs can print to this printer, 2) SPYBOT Search & Destroy is running on my PC and popped some registry change windows during the install.
I'm running out of ideas - any suggestions please?

Hmmm ... this is interesting.  In review:
You can print intermittently from your XP SP3 box to the OJP L7680.
Disabling the SW firewall (Norton/Symantec, Zonealarm, McAfee, etc) on the SP3 PC doesn't help.
Other computers on your network have no problems printing to the OJP L7680.
You are running a wired (Ethernet) network.
Did I get this right?  I'd like to ask a few more questions:
What are the other types of computers on your network and what firewall do they run?
The next time your XP SP3 computer has trouble printing to the OJP L7680, try to access the printer's internal web page.
What are the IP addresses of the other devices on your network?  By chance, is there a duplicate address on your network?
Finally, you can try adding the print driver manually to see if we can get you printing.  This is the sequence for XP:
Click "Start" button --> Printers and Faxes.
Under Printer Tasks, click "Add Printer".
Click "Next" button on the first Add Printer Wizard window.
If the option for Local or Network printer appears, select "Local printer attached to this computer" and deselect  the "Automatically detect and install My Plug and play  printer" option.  Click "Next".
Under Select a Printer Port option, select "Create a new port" and select "Standard TCP/IP Port"  and click "Next" button.
In the "Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP printer port wizard" make sure that the printer is  turned on and configured. Click "Next" button.
Under "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port" enter the printer's host name  (that is the hostname of printer that printed in network configuration page)
under "Additional Port Information" select "Standard". Click Next, and then click Finish.
Now, select HP from the list of manufacturers, select your printer from  the list of Printer models  and click 'Next' button.
The Printer name will be highlighted on the next window.
    Click "Next" button.
It ask for the Printer name -- leave it as is.
Select "Yes" option for making the printer default.
    Click "Next" button.
The Printer Sharing dialog box will open.
    Click "Next" button.
The Print Test Page box appears.
Select "Yes" option to print a test page.
    Print Test Page.
Completing the Add Printer Wizard box appears.
Click "Finish" button and wait for the files to copy
This should work to get you a print queue for your XP box.

  • Cannot update iPod software even after setting automatic detection

Hi, I've been trying to update the software on my 5th gen iPod but to no avail. I've recently bought the pod and just installed iTunes. It informed me that an update was available for the iPod but I can't get it! Everytime I click on Update in the Version section on iTunes, it says "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the internet....Make sure you internet connection is active and try again". The connection is active and i've even tried the method in the hot topics support section telling you to go to 'LAN settings' under the 'Connections' tab in Internet Options and under Automatic Configuration, set it to 'Automatically Detect settings' but this has still not worked. Can someone please help me as this is doing my head in?!!!

yea... something like that is happening to me... when i try to update it (with itunes 7) it says that my firmware is "corrupt".... i dont know what this means because it had no problem updating b4... and no i didnt try to put linux or anything on it. it just wont update.
and if anyone knows.... y does my itunes symbol look like a picture with a camera in the corner... i just downloaded itunes 7 to my friend's computer and it looks just like last itunes but instead of a green music note infront of a cd... its a blue music note infront of a cd... and when i plugged my ipod into his computer it said that my ipod is up to date.... y is that?

  • Token and smart card reader are not detected on Mavericks if not plugged on a USB port during system boot

Well, both token and smart card reader are not detected on OS X 10.9 if not plugged on a USB port during system boot. So, if I am already working within the system and need to use my certificates I have to plug the token or smart card reader on a USB port and restart Mavericks.
Token is a GD Starsign and Smart Card Reader is a SCR3310 v2.
    Thoughts?

SCS is a very good app, since I've read that Apple has discontinued support for PC/SC interfaces after the release of Mountain Lion.
(My previous installation was a Mavericks upgrade from Lion)
However, I don't know what and how to debug using Smart Card Services. Do you know any commands to use?
Apparently, the SC reader reports no issues: the LED is blinking blue when no smart card is present and becomes fixed blue when a smart card is inserted – according to the manuals, this shows that there is correct communication between the OS and the CCID reader.
I don't know what to do; I'm beginning to hypothesize it's a digital signer issue. In fact, my smart card only supports one application called File Protector (by Actalis) to officially sign digital documents. This application seems to have major difficulties in identifying the miniLector EVO.
The generic and ambiguous internal error comes when I try to manually identify the peripheral.
Athena CNS is one of the Italian smart cards and is automatically recognized and configured (so it's correct – no doubts about this), while "ACS ACR 38U-CCID 00 00" seems to be the real name of the miniLector.
(I'm assuming this because System Information also returns that the real manufacturer is ACS... bit4id is a re-brander)
However, when I click on it and then tap OK, it returns internal error.
As first attempt, I would try to completely erase&clean File Protector files to try a reinstall. Then, if this still doesn't work, I'd debug using the terminal.
    So:
    - Do you know any applications to 100% clean files created by an installer?
    - Do you have in mind any solutions that I might have forgotten?
Thanks in advance from an OS X fan!

    1. Make sure the printer is recognised by the base station.
    2. Select 'Add a new printer' in Windows
    3. Select 'Local Printer' in the dialog box (auto detect and install
    should be off), click next.
    4. Choose 'Create a new port' and "Standard TCP/IP Port'. Click next.
    5. For the printer IP address, enter the address of the base station 10.0.1.1. The port name will be filled automatically. Click next.
    6. For the device type, choose 'Hewlet Packard Jet Direct', then click Finish.
Choose your printer from the list and follow the rest of the prompts to install and configure the driver

In order for an iOS device to print to a printer, that printer must be AirPrint-capable. Just connecting a printer to the USB port on the AirPort or Time Capsule will NOT make it AirPrint-capable.
An alternative is to use an application, like: Printopia.

  • Automatically detect com port

    Hello
I would like to create a User Event that defines which method data is provided to the VI (either Serial port or Telnet). If it is Serial port then I would like the VI to automatically find the correct data port that is providing valid instrument data and then stream the data to the screen. If it is a Telnet connection then the IP addresses are pre-determined and the data will also stream to the screen.
As you can see in the attached VI, I am chasing my tail. I can successfully configure my Serial ports to my instrument thanks to some previous help but when I try to build an automatic COM port detection loop, I make a mess of it and my clean-working VI get all gunked-up.
Will someone please put me back on track? What are the key elements that I am missing in this logic?
    Thank you so much.

So I simplified. Attached is a VI using VISA Find Resource to pipe a list to a While Loop that searches the com ports for valid packets.
When running with highlighted execution ON, I can see that the loop sees the correct com port and the logic is good but the VISA Read reads no data. I removed the Flush Buffer vi and increased the bytes to VISA Read but still have the same result - no data to screen.
I also tried to lengthen the amount of time the Mac might need to read the com port from 50ms to 100ms but still nothing. Any ideas?
    Thanks,

  • Can't detect in printer device

when i press ctrl+p in printer field my device can not detect... so please help me...

,Welcome to the HP Forums! I read about the issue you're having when trying to print by using the "Ctrl+P" command. I will do my best to help you however, I will need some more information from you to begin with, and I also have a few suggestions to start.
Please respond to me with the following. If there are any steps here that you have not tried, please try them before responding and include the result in your reply back to me:
How is the printer connected (USB/ wireless/ wired/ Bluetooth)?Have you tested hardware functionality (made copies) and do they work successfully?Have you tried printing from different programs? Can you print from any programs?Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software?Run the Print and Scan Doctor and include the results in your reply.Did you make any recent changes to your set up (physical move, upgrade, downgrade, new software installed, new router, etc)?Is the printer plugged directly into the wall outlet (avoiding power bars and surge protectors)?Have you tried using a different USB/Ethernet cable?Do you see any error messages or codes, and if so, what are they saying and where do you see them?

How do I configure my Airport Extreme to see the printer I have plugged into the USB port?

OK. The 6.0 version no longer has a printer configuration that I could find. You might try Printer Sharing in the Sharing preferences.
I would also check the printer's user manual for help with the setup, and that failing check the manufacturer's website and/or tech support.

  • Ipad 4 unable to detect C4599 Printer already connected to WiFi network

Hi All, I have a C4599 All in One Printer. I have just set this up sucessfully with a WiFi connection to my home router/ modem network (infrastructure mode). There are no error messages and I can print from a variety of Windows laptops (XP, Vista and 7). I have loaded the HP eprint app to my Ipad 4 but it cannot detect the printer. Note that the HP website says that this printer is compatible with the ePrint App.
A second and possibly related issue is that I have registered with the HP eprint service website but I cannot obtain the code or email address for my printer. I cannot find any way of turning on the Web Services on the printer? (The HP website says this should be under Setup>Wireless on the printer but it is not. There are only options for turning the wireless on and off, testing the wireless and printing the network and printer wireless settings (which are all OK>PASS or just information).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

With the last update that was done to the ePrint app, some of the legacy printers lost the capability to use that app to print from. The printer would not have the option to print directly from the iPad to the printer either. That is a feature known as AirPrint. When one has the ability to use AirPrint, one has to place the device on the same network as the printer, pull up a photo, tap the action button on the iPad and then select print. The iPad will then give one an option of which printer to print from if there is more than one printer capable of of AirPrint on the network.
The printer cannot produce a code to signup and register for ePrint due to the age of the printer. Printers that have the ability to ePrint are a majority of the ones that were put into production from 2010 and later. Some Photosmarts that have the capability to use ePrint and AirPrint are the 7520,6520 and the 5520. To learn more about those printers, check out this link here.
