Back To My Mac - Help

I was at school the other day and I needed to grab a file from my home computer. Im connected to the internet looked in my shared devices. And my home computer was not there. It is on and not sleeping. I no i am doing something wrong can someone tell me what to do it would really be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jack

You should have had a response before this...
If both your Macs are connected to the internet via a router, all you have to do is set up "Sharing" between the two Macs. Click on System Preferences, then Sharing. Check File Sharing. Close the window.
Now click on System Preferences, then Network. You will see the IP address of your computer (192.168.x.y). Each computer has the same first three sets, only the last set is different. You connect to the other computer in the Finder, by clicking on Go and Connect to Server. Then type in the IP of the second computer (afp://192.168.a.b). After connection, you will be asked for the user name and passowrd. These refer to the computer you want to connect to, not the one that you are connecting from.
That lets you browse through the contents of the second computer from the first. Of course you can do this from either computer, or from both of the.

  • First time trying to use Back To My Mac - help needed

    Hi
I'm a first time user of Back To My Mac.
At home I believe I have correctly set up my Time Capsule (my main router) and my Mac Mini (running Yosemite) with Back To My Mac. I did test it before I left home (using my iPhone as a hotspot) and thought that everything was ok.
Now I am away from home when I try to log in using my wife's MacBook Air (also running Yosemite) I can see my Time Capsule but not my Mac Mini.
I think that my MacMini might be asleep but I am sure that I have set it to wake on network access.
Do I need to do something extra to get through to my Mac Mini?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

iWork '13 apps can't do Mail Merge. If you have iWork '09, download Pages '09 user guide from the Pages Help menu and read Chapter 11.

  • Back to my mac has never worked for me [sigh] - Help?...

    Hi Gang,
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I've never been able to set up Back to my mac. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot to it if you've got a dot mac account, all Apple hardware and (in my case) a static IP address for the Airport Base Station (which is now a 1TB TimeCapsule). I feel like I must be missing something obvious as it seems I see the problem appearing less frequently with posts on and off this board now that 10.5.2 is out. Have a missed a post here which solved something obvious?
    Here's the basic setup.
Home Computer is G5 Tower, always on connected directly to TimeCapsule which is connected directly to cable modem. The TimeCapsule has a static IP address and I have a couple others which are unassigned. Running 10.5.2 with Back to my Mac Enabled.
Laptop MBP moves all over town and country (and globe) with all the same systems and updates.
I have 3 different dot mac accounts (all full user) and have rotated through them to see if that would help. I'm not 100% certain which one the desktop is running, so I've registering all 3 (one at a time, of course) to see if it would magically show up in the shared bar. I'm not entirely certain if I'd need to log in and out to see that. Am I?
I run Apple Remote Desktop 3 when I'm on my local network, but have never used it across the internet. Tried it last night from London and realized there are configuration issues that I'm probably not aware of and just have not had time to troubleshoot it whilst on a family trip here.
I did (only for this trip) password protect the screen (in Security prefs), but I thought that would at least present itself for entry if I was successful enough to actually access the G5 Tower. Yes? No?...
I'm just kind of stuck and it would be so nice to be able to access the desktop on this trip. Does anyone have any suggestions for a fix while I'm on the road?
    Very much obliged,
    Mick

    Thanks Dogg,
I had a moment of light when I was able to access my wife's computer (which was on) and then remotely access the desktop. For about 5 whole minutes it worked! I checked the settings there and then made the really stupid mistake of trying to change the Screen Sharing settings away from Remote Management to Screen Sharing, and then totally lost my connection. I feel so dumb. I'd forgotten that turning one off to get the other on would obviously not work. [sigh]
But at least I saw it work briefly on another computer.
Any idea how to turn BACK on Screen Sharing or Remote Management, remotely?
    much obliged,
    Mick

  • HT4907 Password Issue when attempting to enable Back to My Mac in iCloud Preferences - HELP?

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I have a problem enabling Back to My Mac. When I try and enable B2MM in the iCloud preferences window, I am asked to enter my Apple ID password. It says the password is incorrect, even though it IS 100% correct. I've even tried resetting my password (so that the password lives up to the latest security requirements for passwords, etc). So, it's definitely correct, and I'm able to login to my Apple account here (on this Apple laptop as well as on my iPad and iPhone)... it's not an issue when I log in anywhere else... I am only told my password is incorrect when attempting to enable Back to My Mac in the iCloud preferences pane.
    Help?
    Many thanks!

Do these make installation of memeo superfluous? Would I need memeo for daily back up?
From what I gather, you couldn't pay me to use Memeo, nor actually a Seagate enclosure, nor many USB only drives, (USB is not bootable on PPC Macs).
I've used maybe a few dozen backup Apps on the Mac, and I'd personally judge only Apple's Time Machine worse than that one.
If you had it to do all over again, you'd get a case with Firewire, one with an Oxford chipset, not containing a Green Drive, not a Seagate Drive, not less than 7200 RPM drive, & a 32MB Cache, not with a One-Button touch feature, ( not a Bus powered drive like...

Apple Senior tech lady deleted all my external drive data while sorting out other problem. How can I restore all my photos , music etc back to my Mac Pro?(I am so scared, I haven't connected iPhone to sync! Please help)

It was tele tech. I couldn't open my Page Numbers etc. Frist tech chat idiot - following dumping few things in bin, asked me yo upgrade to Yosemite. But the problem still persists. This morning I was asked to do it via telephone and like yesterday, after wasting 20 min, I was put to this apparent Tech Queen ( my foot!). She eventually decided to reinstall  Yosemite asked me to connect my external drive while I connected to her. She was moving cursor asking me to move files and delete and I followed her like a dummy. It took 3/4 hours and she called me 3 times once the lengthy process was completed. I suspected from the beginng for the fact that why should be asking me to click all my backup from the very beginning! Eventually she said I deleted... Or someone else or may be my children ! It was a blatant lie. I run my small business from home and I was simply staying in front of the Mac whole day! Children were at school. Then she said I must have used another computer! I only have laptop and the iPad. I will talk to their manager first thing in the morning. In the mean time please let me know as to how can I transfer photos, music etc back to my laptop from my Iphone and IPad .? I am will connect to laptop as I am worried the new BLANK iPhoto may supersede iphone/iPad stuff? Will it? Please let me know. I am not a very tech savvy person. My son who could help me, is in Manchester Uni and Inam in London.

  • Finder's Mac Help gone; how do I get it back?

When I open Mac Help in the finder, the Help Viwer window opens but no contents appear. If I click on Home in that window, I get contents, but the links do not work. If I choose topics from the Help Viewer's Library menu, most work but Apple Script, Mail and Safari Help windows open with no contents (same as Mac Help above). I have repaired permissions. My questions:
    1. Where does help live? I can't find it in Applications or in Library.
    2. I wasn't doing anything unusual when it got messed up.
    3. How do I get back just the parts of Mac Help I have lost?
    Thanks for your help.

    Try this:
In most cases doing the following will restore the Help Viewer:
    1. Trash the following three files, if extant:
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
    3. Empty the Trash and Restart.

  • Help w back to my mac on uverse

    Help appreciated!
I'm unable to login to my work computer remotely from home and likewise can't get through to my home network from work.
    imac at work
    MBP at home
I recently switched to verse. previously with comcast I was able to use back to my mac...
My home network is as follows: 1. uverse 3801 router with wireless function turned off.
    2. uverse router is then connected via ethernet to airport extreme (tower model) in bridge mode. The AEBS manages my wireless network, together with two other airport base stations (older AE and time capsule) that are connected to the tower AEBS via ethernet. All Airports are broadcasting the same wireless network name to facilitate better coverage around the house. (I think these are set to bridge mode too)
I tried setting the uverse router to DMZ plus mode and setting the AEBS tower to DHCP and NAT, but that wreaked havoc on my wireless setup. Although speed tests through speakeasy and the comcast servers were giving 20mbps, I could not stream video at all. Netflix, HBO even youtube stalled, loaded, couldn't connect to stream.
Help finding a clear/updated walkthrough for Yosemite or a solution/fix appreciated.
At the end of the day, would like to have back to my mac working with uverse. Thanks

This is a Wild Guess:  Did uverse give you an Routing or Non-routing IP address?
    Non-Routing IP addresses are
    10.*.*.*
    192.168.*.*
    172.16.*.* through 172.31.*.*
If uverse gave a Non-routing address then they have put you behind a NAT router of their own to expand the number of homes they can support on a limited number of IP addresses.
NOTE:  I know your Airport Extreme will give out 10.0.1.* addresses when it is NOT in bridge mode, and most other routers will use 192.168.*.* addresses, but these are for the devices attached in your home.  The router itself should get a Routing IP address so it can talk directly to the internet, and other devices on the internet.
However, with IPv4 addresses running out, it may be possible that some ISPs have started to put their customers behind their own NAT routers to extend the number of customers they can support when they cannot get more IP addresses.
    Again, just making a guess.

When I try to back up my Mac Book Pro to an external hard drive some of the files are backed up but not all files are backed up. I don't understand. Can anyone help please?

I've used time machine in the past and couldn't get to the bottom of the problem so I've recently downloaded and am using carbon copy cloner and I get the same problem. The files that are missing are just word and number documents. Seems so odd.

Hold down the Option key when starting up, or restarting. You'll be presented with the Startup Manager, which is a simple graphic of the drives you can boot to. Double click the drive which has OS X on it. Once in OS X, go to the System Preferences and click on Startup Disk. Choose the drive you always want the Mac to boot to first.

  • Help with configuring back to my mac on the time capsule?

I just found out about the "back to my mac" feature within the time capsule. I followed the directions on how to set it up, but I have a problem. it says that I am supposed to enable the nat port mapping protocol. I went to the internet tab in the TC and changed connection sharing to share a public ip address, and then enabled the Nat protocol but when I hit update, it says that I have to correct 3 problems:
    1. DHCP beginning address. The dhcp range entered conflicts with the WAN ip address of my device. It shows 192.168.1.2
    2. DHCP ending address. The dhcp range entered conflicts with the WAN ip address of my device. It shows 192.168.1.200
    3. The wireless device is setup to allow configuration over the ethernet wan port, which decreases network security. It gives me the option to unclick the allow setup over wan box, or I can simply choose to ignore this problem.
What does all this mean? and how can I fix these problems?

3 Broadband presents a whole host of problems when using on the go: broadband it ain't -it has serious issues with gMail and gTalk, loses connections with the latter plus AIM and iChat, sends eMails off into the ether and basically is just toy broadband. I had the chance to compare the service with the offering from O2 Ireland (shortly about to go to 7,2 mbps) and there is just no comparison. To all intents and purposes, O2(IRL) behaves just like real broadband, performs all normals tasks with aplomb and without even getting up steam. This is how HSDPA should be (and this is over bluetooth, not even using the usb datamodem).
I'm dropping 3 IRL as soon as possible and just keeping 3 UK X-series as backup.

  • Just resolved Back to my Mac issue called Apple Suppport in the UK and they were really helpful if the error DNS server not responding the problem is with Apple server not your server ( I had tried to reboot by router, restart my laptop etc.

I was having problem with my Back to my Mac as message was saying DNS Server not responding . I tried to turn my WIFI off, then my router  to no avail. Decided to call Apple Support line in the UK . I got a call back immediatly and great support.  The advisor took over my screen and we check that my laptop was synchronising   with I phots and it was.  The adviser also told that when the message DNS server is not responding next to Back to my Mac is has to do with Apple Server not mine , router etc... Hope this save others some time! Rather than spending time truining on and off changing IP address etc...

Thanks for your thorough post. I too need to use BTMM on almost a daily basis for my job, and it has fallen short countlness times. I too have taken great pains to check all of the typical trouble shooting steps within iCloud and in the Apple keychain on each Mac etc, but after the latest rounds of system updates from Apple a few weeks ago to Mountain Lion, BTMM on one of my Macs is completely broken and unusable. I would concur that if you need remote access for "real" mission critical use, just bite the bullet and pay for a service like LogMeIn. You won't regret it and you will get real software support.

  • Back to My Mac not working-a diagnosis and a solution

    Hello all,
I own a small business and relied on Back to My Mac while traveling. I have had connection issues with BTMM since MobileMe was discontinued. I have found a solution but it is not an Apple solution. Skip to the end if you'd like the straight dope.
FYI: I have exhausted all possible Apple-centric solutions, to the best of my knowledge. This was verified over the phone during an extensive troubleshooting session with a senior Apple specialist. All Macs and OS involved are optimized (in theory) to work with Back to My Mac. The appropriate file sharing options were checked. Users had appropriate access privileges. I have a valid MobileMe ID that has transferred over smoothly to iCloud. Firewall settings were not the issue.
But before we go further, if you are having BTMM connectivity issues, you might want to examine this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4071540
And see if it does the trick for you. It seems to have worked for a lot of people. But if it doesn't, please read on.
I have an iMac at my office that I connect to. I have a MacBook that I use to make the remote connections. Before MobileMe was discontinued, I read all support docs on how to make the transition to iCloud. Nevertheless, once MobileMe was discontinued, I began to have BTMM connection issues. My Macbook could "see" my iMac, and vice versa, but once connection was attempted, either through "Share Screen" or "Connect As…",  the status bar would run indefinitely and no connection would complete.
First, I tried the Keychain solution indicated above. No dice.
Then I saw the System Preferences>iCloud message that Back to My Mac required NAT Port Mapping and/or Universal Plug and Play settings on my router. I have an old Linksys router, and I was able to upgrade its settings to UP&P, but not to NAT Port Mapping. The situation did not improve.
I went to an Apple Store, spoke with a pair of salespeople who informed me that the problem would most likely be solved by replacing my old router with Airport Extreme, which would automatically upgrade my network to the necessary UP&P and NAT-PM protocols, and if any issues existed after that, they would probably be firewall-related, which I could either fix on my own or talk to an Apple person about.
After installing Airport Extreme, the situation did not improve, and I called Apple Support. I entered the serial number into the web page, and was informed that I was not qualified for tech support because my warranty had expired, even though I had made the purchase the previous evening. I checked the option that indicated that I thought this was in error and that I was in fact qualified, and ten minutes later, I received a phone call from Apple.
At first, I was on the line with a Airport Extreme specialist, who ran down the Airport Utility checklist. With my wife at the Macbook at home, and myself in my office at the iMac and on the phone with the Apple specialist, the troubleshooting began. Once it was apparent that nothing was working, I was transferred to a "senior" specialist who indeed knew everything under the sun about networking and Back to My Mac, at least as far as I could tell. We checked various settings on all devices, Airport configurations, iCloud account validity, my network's firewall settings, etc.
Finally, the specialist suggested we check the settings on my home router, which was supplied by my ISP and not an Apple device. I asked him why. He said that if we enabled UP&P and NAT-PM on my home router, that would probably help make the connection. I informed him that while that might be a short-term fix, I travel as part of my job and need to make remote connections to my office, often from places where I have no control over the router settings. He informed me that because of those "variables" I might very well continue to experience connection issues, and that in some locations I would be able to connect, and some, not.
On the heels of all the time and money spent thus far, I was in disbelief. We spent some more time affirming beyond question that he was actually telling me what I thought he was telling me, and I cordially thanked him for his time and we ended the phone support session.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE: I learned from a senior Apple specialist that network and router settings not only have to be just right at the server location but *also* the remote location in order for Back to My Mac to work. Simply having an iCloud ID is not always enough. If you travel, you most likely have no control over router settings at your hotel, coffee shop, etc., and if you rely on remote connections as part of your job, you can't afford to take the chance that wherever you reside might not be BTMM compatible. I signed up for LogMeIn Pro, at a cost of $59.95 a year. It has screen sharing, file sharing *and* iPhone access, which BTMM does not offer. My remote connections are now almost instantaneous and without issue. Problem solved.
Please note, I have no ax to grind with Apple, I enjoy using their products and believe they are superior to Windows machines. I am also more than happy with the level of expertise, courtesy and efficiency of their support people. The Airport Extreme that I purchased is pretty cool, has kickass wireless signal, and has reduced the amount of wiring on my desk thanks to its wireless printing and hard drive capabilities. I feel a little burned that I bought it for no reason, but I have 14 days to return it, no questions asked. We'll see.
In conclusion, Back to My Mac does not seem to work as advertised. I am curious if anyone has had a similar experience. Hope this helps someone or at least, saves you some time.

    Hi Friends...
I’m trying to delete a back-up file on mu TC but I get the message “The operation could not be completed because the item “bands” is in use. I’d like to start the Back from scratch, could help me out with deleting the current file?

Sorry, I am very confused. I asked the following question....
Is this the only backup file on your Mac, or do you have other backup files and data on the Time Capsule disk?
The answer that you gave was....
    This is the only one
    Now you are saying that....
But I have lots of other files on Time Capsule! The back up file is only one of them.
    Can you clarify, please?

  • ICloud & back to my mac - is this a screen share issue?

Since installing Lion a few weeks ago on my Macmini (to help me fully upgrade / migrate from MobileMe to iCloud)  I've have a couple of issues which are bugging (no pun intended) the life out of me. I'm almost at the point of doing a complete erase and install of Lion it's that bad. Normally I always do an erase and install when upgrading OSX but the setup of my mini is such that it would take me a long time to rebuild it from scratch. That'll teach me.. I just upgraded Lion on top of Snow Leopard, whereas on my MBP I did a clean install of Lion and no problems.
    Here's my issue:
On serveral occasions, whilst using back to my mac, to screenshare my mini on my MBP, I've had windows and hard drives disappear off screen. If I do a right mouse click on my finder I can view the windows on screen but when I select them they disapear. I have a feeling that mission control is doing something, but I never use this, nor do I have anything set-up, other than the intial configuration. This is *really* doing my head in. I can usually fix it by changing the screen dimensions on my mini through the Display control panel or switching my TV over to the hdmi input so I can view the desktop directly on my TV (as opposed to screensharing).
I'm not really sure if this is a problem with mission control, or back to my mac, or a video input problem (I'm using a mini displayport to dvi and dvi to hdmi cable to connect the mini to my TV).
Any troubleshooting suggestions very much appreciated.

If you have a VPN installed (by mistake?) you should be able to go to your System Prefs > Network and see the VPN listed in the left hand column along with Aiport and Ethernet. You can un-install by using the minus button at the bottom of the column.
The link provided shows you how to install a VPN client with screen shots, including one of this Network Prefs screen and what a VPN client looks like.
