Bad concatenation syntax not detected by javac

The following test case produces no compile errors but bad results. In my app the string '45' was inserted as though it were between the concatenation operators. This condition occurred in jdk 1.3.1_07.
* Demo of uncaught invalid syntax ?
public class JavacTestCase {
     String plTrain = "210";
     String pieceMk = "131D1N";
     public JavacTestCase() {
// the whitespace-separated operators '+ +' appear to be invalid syntax
          String commod2 = plTrain +     + '-' + pieceMk;
Pardon me if this is a feature, not a bug,
Bill Winspur

This is not invalid syntax.
The dash/hyphen is ASCII decimal 45. Since '-' is a char primitive type and is preceded by the unary operator, it will be converted to an int. The second plus is treated as a unary operator, so + '-' becomes +45. Normal String concatenation then takes place so you end up with "45" within the resulting String.

  • DVD-Audio and "can not detect sound blaster card" with Audigy2 Va

I recently purchased an "Audigy2 Value" card from an eBay user, because I recently purchased some DVD-Audio discs. I downloaded the Audigy2 drivers from the website, and the Creative MediaSource player. 5. Surround sound worked fine for me, though sometimes the driver would reset to the default 2/2. sound and I would have to re-select 5. sound, which was annoying.
Then I was completely unable to get the MediaSource player to recognise my DVD-Audio discs, and the EAX functionality of the player would never work. The EAX logo never appeared in the player. When I tried installing the MediaSource player from an install disc, I got the message "can not detect sound blaster card". Then I discovered the world of EEPROM problems.
I followed advice from some other threads, including using ScanPCI to get information on the card, which yielded the following result.
When installed on my machine (Asus A7A266 motherboard) the ScanPCI reads:

(Just a note: above you can clearly see that it does not say I have an Audigy, it thinks it is a SBLi've. Is this normal? The card IS an Audigy 2, it says so on the card.)
So, I put the card back on my own PC, thinking this has fixed my EEPROM, but I get the same as before. Subsystem ID 0002h. And of course the install software will not detect the card.
I realise that I could go back to using the web drivers, but this still leaves me with MediaSource not recognising the card and not enabling DVD-Audio or EAX, which is why I bought the card in the first place!
I have heard that the VIA chipset is possibly to blame for the EEPROM problems on the Audigy cards, and certainly it seems like it is not permanent, since it gave different information on the other PC. So now I am seriously considering getting a new motherboard.
Do other motherboards cause this same problem? I don't want to buy another board and get the same trouble. All I want is to be able to install my MediaSource and have it recognise my card so I can listen to my DVD-Audio discs.
    Cheers,
    Russ.

Figured out my problem. Installing the drivers from the web to begin with was a bad idea. They just did not work properly with the card.
The "card not found" problem has gone as well, after installing it in another PC. I am also using the proper install disc now, as the other one I was using turned out to not be for the Audigy 2 value after all, but was an Audigy 2 install disc. That easily explains the "Card not found" error. The differing results from the ScanPCI program are still bizarre, though.
Thanks to all of the people on the forum who posted information in other threads to help me deal with this issue. For now I am sticking with the original drivers from the disc and I am not upgrading.

  • Hard disk not detected once, but now working?

    Hi,
I'm Zak, a bit of techie when it comes to playing with software, or re-assembling computers and whatnot. Unfortunately I've got no clue about some other things.
A bit of quick history on my notebook: The fan has been making terrible noises the last few weeks. Initially I thought it was some dust so I got some duster. A lot of dust came out, so that can only be good, but the noises came back after a few days. After some searching I figured the other logical explanation was probably the hard drive going bad. I'm hesitant to send it back to HP because I use it for all my university work and it would really set me back a few weeks to not have it.
So, a few days ago, I booted up my notebook to a "hard drive not detected" - or very similar - message. There were a few options, for f1-f4, they were system information, and 3 different tests (I think). I ran the tests, each one came back fine, noting that there was no OS installed, or hard disk to boot from. I rebooted because I hadn't quite seen it boot up, and wanted to see if there were any other options. Turns out, it started up fine. I restarted once more and again, it did fine.
Next, I scrambled around, backing up all my data, getting together warranty info, installing the HP Support Assistant, etc. I ran all the tests from the Support Assistant and there were no problems detected. Since then I've just been hibernating the notebook when I stop using it, and I haven't encountered any unusual trouble. It all seems fine, but my warranty expires Dec 7th of this year. Is it safe for me to assume the "hard drive not detected" error was just a single misfire? I've read a lot of threads and FAQs on it and it doesn't sound like something that just happens once and goes away. On the other hand, I've never had to use a warranty so am unsure quite how the process works, and like I said, sending it anywhere would put me back in my work.
For the sake of a full post, I have an HP G62-367DX Notebook, running on Windows 7 64-bit OS, and as far as I know there were no changes made between the error and my prior boot. If there's any other information I can provide, just let me know.
Cheers, thank you very much for any assistance, and good day
    This question was solved.

The tests from the Assistant are not as comprehensive or reliable as the full hard drive test in the BIOS....tap F10 as you power up, go in there and find the hard drive test. Run the long form test and see what is says. It is not unusual for hard drive issues to start as intermittent and gradually get more frequent. If your drive passes the long form test you can fairly safely assume it was a one-time gremlin of some sort, but it is still a real good idea to back up. I like the idea of the online backup services and I will name Carbonite only because it is well known and not as an endorsement. There are several more and an external drive is also a good idea.
You cannot put off a reboot forever; you are going to have to confront the issue at some point.

  • Airport card works in 10.1, HW test passes, but not detected at all in 10.4

Ok, Hi. I'll first admit this is my first post so go easy on me!
I just bought a used iBook G3 and it was working fine for a while until about a month ago when all kinds of weird things stared happening. Some of which those problems I solved from reading previous topics from these forums - but anyways, I'll skip all my other problems and get right to my current one.
First off here is the complete specs:
12.1" iBook G3 "dual USB series"
    500MHz PPC processor
    128+256MB ram = 384MB RAM
15GB hard drive (NOW 160GB HARD DRIVE!)
No Airport Card (NOW ONE HAS BEEN ADDED!)
Multiple OS's - OS9 and 10.1 were included (have original disks)
I also have a set of 10.4 Tiger CD-ROM disks
Anyways, here is basically what is happening. I bought an Airport card off eBay for my iBook. I installed it about a week ago. I booted into 10.4 Tiger and it did not detect the card. Tried to do the manual setup with the wizard and it said there was no card attached. I went into the system profiler and is said No info available under the airport section. I then booted to my "apple hardware test disk" and ran the full/extended test. It passed everything (including the Airport card) so I know that is not the problem. I then booted into OS X 10.1 and lone behold the card is detected and is working without any fooling around with! Instant wireless internet! So I know that the card is working, but I want to use it in Tiger as 10.1 is almost worthless. So I boot into Tiger again knowing that the card is working, and Tiger still does not recognize it! I even booted into OS 9 and it detected the card (although it was having some connection problems, but at least I know that it IS detecting it.)
Here is what I tried (so you can cross these suggestions off your list! lol)
I've deleted the Airport "ktext" files, etc. (can't remember the actual names of the files, but I've cleared all of those caches and still no luck.)
    I've zapped PRAM
    I rest NVRAM
    I rest the PMU.
I did a Arcive and install of 10.4
...All of which did not help. Again, the card worked in 10.1, but 10.4 is completely blind and can't find it!
Now we are caught up to today. I was having many other odd problems and it all lead to my hard drive probably being bad. So toady I finally bit the bullet and bought a new hard drive from Best Buy. It took me forever to install it, but I did it, and it works! Now I have 160GB (make that only 128GB detected) of space. I partitioned it 4 ways as well:
    "Tiger" - 80GB
    "Other OS" - 30GB
    "Extra Space 1" - 10GB
    "Extra Space 2" - 8GB
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx- 128GB Total
So now that I have a new hard drive (that I was told would fix all of my problems because my old one was "bad" I thought I would have it working today, but no. So I put in the brand new drive, partitioned it, booted off my Tiger disk, installed it on the 80GB partition. The install went fine. So I now have 10.4 on the new drive. Seems to be a lot faster then my old drive! I did the combo updater (which I downloaded on my iMac and transfered to a flash drive and loaded on to my iBook) Ran the updater, and now it is running 10.4.11! But then I realized, the Airport card is STILL not detected in Tiger!!! - I thought the new hard drive would solve all my problems as I was staring from scratch, but no, there is still a problem!
I ran the Apple hardware test disk again, full test, and it said my Airport card is still fine. I didn't reinstall 10.1 yet (nor did I want to, I was hoping Tiger would work for what I wanted) but it seems now that I might have to go back and install 10.1 again. I don't know what it will prove - other then it will work again, but I don't want to use 10.1 so I'm not going to bother doing all that again.
Anyways, after looking into this further, I brought up the system boot log (of tiger) and found these lines interesting, and hopefully useful to you guys:
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortFirmware: start Sta f/w download
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortDriver: F/W download failed
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortFirmware: start Sta f/w download
    localhost DirectoryService[64]: Lunched version 1.8 (v346)
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortDriver: F/W download failed
it then lists the eithernet address and then ramblers on about other nonsense. If anyone needs the other "stuff" i'll try and save the whole log file and attach it here if anyone needs it.
So could anyone please help? It seems as if i've done everything, and still can not get an answer on why it is doing this, and how to fix it!
    Please Help!
Thanks you so much, and sorry for the long yet detailed message!!!
    -Scott

Hey, just wanted to post an update to let everyone know what I ended up doing.
Bottom line with the airport card I had is that is was "bad" - well only kind of. I got an email from a guy from a local PC repair shop. He told me he had just gotten one of those cards in and had it for sale for only $25. So I was chatting with this guy and he said it would be alright if I brought my iBook right in his shop, swap the cards and try it before I buy it. So I did so. Very nice guy and we swapped out the cards no problem. Right away it recognized his card and worked! I then downloaded the Airport update and ran it. (remember before, when I tried to update my card, after it restarted it was no longer recognized.) So we did the update with HIS card in and after it restarted, it STILL worked! It also added WPA support as well! We then booted into to Tiger (remember the old card wasn't recognized at all in tiger) and it ALSO worked in Tiger! I also had WPA support right away! So I bought the card and was all happy that it was all working again! I then figured out what the problem was with the old one.
My original card was one of the "original" originals. Then, Apple "changed" the original cards and replaced ones with "128bit" support. (this is all before the extreme cards) I then found out that the newer original cards (the one the guy just sold me) are worth MORE because these are the cards that are compatible with the newer update (128bit WEP, and WPA) The cards looked exactly the same, but the newer card has "128 Bit" printed on the bottom of the card.
SO, it ended up, I was "asking too much" out of the card I had - as the card I had did not support what I was trying for it to do. Where as the newer card I bought IS compatible with the update, and worked like a piece of cake. So all in all, the first card I had isn't "dead" it just wasn't working with what I wanted it to. So I'm going to end up selling it. Hopefully craigslist, but I will get more for it on eBay. so that is what I'm going to do. I'll just make sure to tell people this "story" so they don't try and do the same thing I did. But for someone with an even older laptop, an older OS, or an older router, this card will work just fine for them.
So thats basically it! Looks like I got everything working!

  • IPod 4th gen grayscale will not detect usb connection.

Hello everyone, I have a iPod 4th gen grayscale and I'm running Ubuntu, everything has worked well for about a year now, I have been syncing my iPod through VirtualBox with Windows XP for as long as I have been using Linux, though, for some reason, my iPod has stopped noticing my usb being connected, I know it's not the usb cable, or the usb ports, I have restarted my iPod and put it into disk mode, still no luck, restarted my computer, Linux will not detect anything plugged in, nor will Windows, though my iPod shows the battery charging when plugged in, but iTunes will not detect the iPod.
I have switched the hard drive of the iPod out seeing if that was the problem, still no luck, my car dock will pick up the iPod and play music, so will my other docks, I thought it might of been Linux at first, so I plugged it into my desktop with Vista, it also will not detect it.
Does anyone have an answer to this riddle?

A bad USB hub will cause the problem ... are you using it ??

No, nothing will show on the desktop - that only happens with card-based cameras (which are usually connected via USB).
But, make sure your camera is turned on, and in playback mode. Do you have another Firewire cable you can test, in case that cable is bad? Try also the tips in this document:

  • WLS 8.1, SP1 - Weblogic does not detect my servlet class has changed

I've come across this problem in weblogic 7.0 sp2 and 8.1 sp1 and never found the
solution. I've asked for solution in BEA's newsgroups and official support and
NEVER received any suitable answer. I've found other people's quesions regarding
this problem and they didn't found an answer either. I can't believe this is not
happenning to more people and there is not solution!!!!!!
Sometimes (don't know when or why) when we copy our servlets developed with JBuilder
(6, 7 or 9) or javac and ant, into our exploded archive directory application,
weblogic does not detect the change, and it serves the the servlet's old version.
Of course, that servlet is not included in any classpath, and even if we delete
the class file, it still executes the old version. We even delete the .wlnotdelete
folder under our server, temp, etc. restart the machine, etc. and it does not
              load the updated servlet.
The only solution is to change servlet's name and the reference in our web.xml.
That's the moment that weblogic detects changes, but, for so long? Sooner or later,
the problem appear again... or not. WHY!!??!! What should we change/delete or
whatever for our new servlet to be updated?
How can I force weblogic to register again as new servlets ALL my servlets?
Now it's even happening to a class used in a very simple tag library. CAN'T BELEIVE
              IT!!!!
It happens in NT 4.0 and W2K Prof. It happened in Weblogic 7.0 sp2 and now in
Weblogic 8.1 sp1. It never happened in Weblogic 5.1 sp10.
Looking forward to hearing a solution for this.

I too am looking for this answer.
I did notice that the BEA Docs mention that the compiled file needs to be in WEB-INF/classes,
and mine is in WEB-INF/lib. However, ALL the .jar files are in the LIB directory.
My jar file is never found when it's in the classes dir....
Please let me know if you find the solution.

  • Reciever not detected -- Nano+Nike System Failure

I'm on my 3rd Nike+ system. After approximately 20+ miles of running, my nano would no longer can detect the reciever. It would 'stop' the workout mid-way through and after that, the nano will not detect the reciever. I've replaced the sensor twice (and nano twice) and now the sensor went bad again.
I've had very bad reliability with this Nano+Nike system. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Took my kit and nano back to the shoe store. Exchanged the kit, plugged it into the nano and everything worked perfect.

But the Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter is not detecting the wifi which is worked properly before resetting the OS. when i run the troubleshoot option under HP SUPPORT ASSISTANT it shows a red mark while resetting the adapter.
i want to know how can i fix it.

    Rats.
I hope the replacement card fixes the problem.  Over the years I have had just one bad network card -- and it drove me nuts tracking down that it was, indeed, a failed card.
Good Luck - post back if you like and let us know the results!

It is a nice way to say “Thank You” for the help.
Although I strive to reflect HP's best practices, I do not work for HP.

Sound is fine but I get error message every time I try to start any of the creative applications that come in mediasource like the graphic eq, speaker settings, surround mixer, EAX and THX consoles; the error: The Audio Device supported by this application is not detected. The application will exit.
I have read the forum notes on this error message and seems other have had this same issue, but I don't see any solutions...if anyone knows anything about solving this little mystery, please reply - need to get into that console to fully utilize this sound card.

AFTER AUTOUPDATE this problem began. I removed the audigy package and reinstalled everything from the factory CD and still get this message. This happens every time I update the audigy drivers and thx. I am tired of doing recoveries to get audigy to work. Too bad I keep forgetting that the updates cause this problem. Audigy Platinum 2 works fine wothout the update. I will never update again!
How can I resolve this problem short of a full recovery?

  • Pendrive not detecting

i have purchased and usb flash drive last 15 days ago from Grant road and it was working properly but all of a sudden it is not showing on my laptop & in disk management its showing no Media pls help me out...

    Subani,
You will want to try the pen drive on another computer to test with.
If the drive is still not detected on any other computer, then it is a bad drive and needs to be replaced.
Let me know what you find.
    Thanks.
