Basic question on setting Redundancy as the Retention policy

DB version:11g
I am planning to implement Differential Incremental Backup for my database. My strategy is
Sunday -->     Level 0 backup
Monday -->     Level 1 backup
Tuesday-->     Level 1 backup
Wednesday-->     Level 1 backup
Thursday-->     Level 1 backup
Friday-->     Level 1 backup
Saturday-->      Level 1 backup
Again, the new weekly backup cycle starts
Sunday -->     Level 0 backup
Monday -->     Level 1 backup
.Retention Policy set to Recovery Window
==========================
I understand What Recovery window retention policy means.If i configure
'CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;' This means only those backups which are older than 7 days will be reported as obsolete when the 'delete obsolete' command is executed.
Retention Policy set to Redundancy
=============================
But i am a bit confused about Retention Policy set to Redundancy:
Does
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 3;mean that you maintain 3 copies of backups on different disk locations ? How does this fit in with my above mentioned incremental backup strategy?

Thank you Centinul.
If REDUNDANY simply means maintain N number of copies of datafiles then what does
BACKUP DEVICE TYPE DISK COPIES 3 DATAFILE 7 FORMAT '/u02/orabkp/%U','/u01/oradata/%U';command do?Are they both the same?

  • Setting the retention Policy to recovery window.

    We are using Netbackup as a our third party tool for corporate backups and have used brbackup with backint on Windows for many years with great success.We would like to incorporate RMAN incremental backups for our backup strategy. Currently our retention policies through netbackup are:
    Backup              Retention
    Daily Online        2 weeks.
    Weekly Online     4 weeks.
    Monthly Online   12 months.
    Redologs            4 weeks.
    We would like to continue to retain the monthly backup. Other than setting the retention policy window to 365, how could we do this???? We would like to avoid growing a huge control file.
    Regards
    Scott

    Hello Scott,
    > We would like to avoid growing a huge control file.
    Ok nice approach, but the (RMAN) data in the control file is reused after the value of the init parameter CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME. (has nothing todo with the retention policy)

    You can use the KEEP clause with the command BACKUP or CHANGE.

  • Basic questions of structure Alchmy inside the AVM ans corePlayer ? Help!

    Hello community:)
    Flash Player 10 has been amended in order to run the new code from the compilation Alchemy! Is this correct?
    The new ABC Alchemy is for new features such as memory pointer, asynchronous functions? is that correct? and what else?
    This amendment consists of a small AVM separated from the Tamarin ? where everything is in Tamarin?
    The memory allocated to code from Alchemy is separated from the memory area allocated to the AVM and PlayerCore? it is like that?
    The CorePlayer flashRuntime and had to be changed?
    The ABC from Alchemy is intended only as to the AVM? or also to CorePlayer?
    Alchemy can access the BIOS? especially for 33h the mouse? if not, is it possible to control the mouse in one way or another with Alchemy?
    Immagine it would create a code C to produce sound from a bytesArray to replaceSampleData AS3 class, it's possible? If not, why? a restriction of the sandbox?
    Can be added directly to the assembler code using Alchemy? or it's prohibited because of the respect of cross platefrom?
    Thank you for maximum responses! although one can easily imagine some answers, I have confirmation:)
    Too many people claim things on forums, affirmative behave as if it was the system programmers themselves FlashPlayer! Outside, people sometimes give wrong answers! Two days ago, I had a guy who claimed that the AVM does not compile ABC! The ABC was executed directly .  It's sad and a shame to read such things. He obviously did not read and do not know the JIT
    This post is aimed at people on what they say and who were able to verify the information. Alchemy or programmers themselves.
    Thank you all!

    In order to understand things and not waste our time trying to code without knowing ifthey are not working because of am or even if it is because it is not impossible or not the player, I'm posted this on the forum Player. But my post is not answered .. Adobe programmers never come on this forum? Nobodyknows exactly how it works?
    Hello everyone
    I have some basic questions about the Flash player and  AVM2..
    I made this little flow chart for Player 9 and above >
    Can  anyone tell me if it is consistent and fair to me or to report a possible error?
    AVM2 the only accessing the CPU and Ram? and in no event in the device or OS API, right?
    The AVM2 in our current players is always a Tamarin?
    The next step is to replace the JIT by the nanoJIT spiderMonckey?
    The byteCode from Alchemy is well executed in the AVM and not elsewhere?
    The memory area codes assigned to Alchemy is the same as that of the AVM or is it different andseparate?
    Thank  you for your answers.

  • Question about Setting Window Title/the use of AVWindowSetTitle()

    Hi everyone,
    I have a question about setting the title of the window in which the Acrobat viewer normally opens a PDF file.  The documentation states that AVWindowSetTitle() cannot be used in this case.  However, using it has worked with versions of Acrobat/Reader up until and including version 8.
    Everything breaks down starting with Acrobat 9.
    According to the documentation I am supposed to do the following: "To set the title of a window in which the Acrobat viewer opens a PDF file, you must replace AVDocOpenFromASFileWithParams() and pass the window title in tempTitle."
    Unfortunately, there are 2 problems I have with this approach:
         I do need to be able to change the document title on document Save, not only on document Open
         I do not know what AVDocOpenFromASFileWithParams() implementation has to look like if I have to replace it using HFTReplaceEntry().
    Is there a sample customized implementation of AVDocOpenFromASFileWithParams() somewhere that I could take a look at?
    Is there a way to change a document Title inside Acrobat/Reader window after a Save operation?
    Thanks a million,
      Lana2010K

         I am sorry.  I don't know how you tested this and came to conclusion that this works correctly in Acrobat X.
         I just tested our Acrobat plug-in with a trial version of Acrobat X and this did not work.
         When we open a file in Acrobat (doing it ourselves in the plug-in by adding another specialized open) we set the window title to something different from the default file name.  Then if a file gets edited and saved (File->Save), the window title gets reset to the file name. In the PDDocDidSave callback we call AVWindowSetTitle() to set it back to a more descriptive window title we need.  This has worked up until and including Acrobat 8, but does not work in either version 9.0 or 10.0.
         Also, I just modified the plug-in code to always change the Window Title of every document (even if opened through native File->Open) on document Save.  It does not work.
         Please help,
              Lana2010K

  • Setting a Retention Policy - Is there a way to first query it's effectiveness - Here's the Retention Policy I'd like to set...

    Hi All,
    I've inherited and Exchange 2010 SP3 UR4 environment that has UM but no Retention Policy has been set.  As a result, I have MP3s filling up disk space.  Adding to that is that I'm a N00b when it comes to Exchange.  I've more or less created
    User and Room Mailboxes, etc.
    This Retention Policy should address it:
    New-RetentionPolicyTag "Voice Mail 60 Day Retention" -Type All -MessageClass voicemail -Comment "Untagged messages removed after 60 days." -RetentionEnabled $true -AgeLimitForRetention
    60 -RetentionAction DeleteAndAllowRecovery
    Thing is, just like any "set" cmdlet, I prefer to first query like everyone else with a "get" cmdlet.
    Do you know if there's a way to query this first?
    Thank you very much for your time,
    Mr Mister

    You mean you want to see if it actually works as expected? In that case I would create the policy and then apply only to one mailbox and see how that goes.

    Hmmm, I can't see where the confusion originates. The table near the bottom of www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html has one row labelled "For backup using Time Machine" and another row labelled "For AirPort Disk with a USB hard drive".
    The requirement for backup via Time Machine is OS 10.5.1 or better. Time Machine is not supported in pre-Leopard (OS 10.5) nor in Windows.
    The requirement for using Time Capsule as a remote disk is identified as "Mac with Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later" or "PC with Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista; Bonjour for Windows (included on Time Capsule CD)".
    Doesn't that pretty much spell out that Time Capsule works as a network drive without the need for Time Machine?
    Also Joe (the OP) never indicated any desire to use it with Windows so I'm not sure why all the discussion about Windows compatibility. ??
    Also the quote posted by Henry seems pretty clear:
    "Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily."

  • Basic Question - Where can I find the SRWC 2.2 software to download

    Hi All:
    First time poster, long time listener... I am a Windows guy trying to setup a new SRS, and I can't for the life of me find the location of the new Windows Connector 2.2 software! You would think this is pretty basic and easy, but searching the Sun site is horrible, or am I missing something?
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi Paul,
    I'm assuming you've downloaded the following zip file from the download center:
    srwc_2.2_solaris.zip
    Once unzipped, here are the install procedures for both Solaris and Linux:

    I'm just wondering if it's worth my time trying to learn the programs or if i'm better off justing using imovie.

    It is not as user-friendly as iMovie, depending on how you define "user-friendly". What do you need to do with it? My friend made a very nice 30-minute short film on iMovie and I still use it for basic projects (wedding videos and slideshows). However, iMovie is just a "toy" compared to Final Cut's capabilities.

    -Cinema Tools
    -Final Cut Pro
    -Compressor
    Actually, those are the programs included in Final Cut Pro itself (save Motion Pictures, which is actually just called Motion). The full package of Final Cut Studio includes Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro. Go here for more info: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/
    I'm just wondering if it's worth my time trying to
    learn the programs or if i'm better off justing using
    imovie.
    Again, what do you need to use them for? In general, I would recommend learning Final Cut Studio, if you have access to it. There is a learning curve from iMovie, but the Final Cut layout is very intuitive and easy to learn. If video editing is something you want to get into as a career choice, I'd say get crackin' on Final Cut.
    Good luck!

  • When Retention policy is set as REDUNDANCY

    DB version: 10.2.0.4
    Just trying to understand the concept of Redundancy.
    If i set my Retention Policy set to REDUNDANCY like
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 4;and all the backup files are stored in one location like '/u04/rmanbkp/' then multiple copies (4 of them) of the same datafile with different names (unique names generated using U% setting) will be created here. Right?
    The next day all these datafile copies will be obsolete. Right?
    Recovery Window retention policy is more widely used than Redundancy . Right?

    on the 5th day,the first (out of 4 copies) copy of backup becomes obseleteprovided that you do exactly one backup every day. If you do 6 backups a day -- e.g. every 4 hours -- you'd be obsoleting a backup less than 24 hours old !
    So, if you are DBA new to a site, ask first "how many backups we do, what is the RETENTION Policy" ?

  • Purpose of Retention Policy Recovery Window and Redundancy

    Hi,
    Good Evening,
    I have some queries regarding the RMAN Retention Policy Recovery Window and Redundancy.
    1. Any condition is there to set the Retention Policy Recovery Window and Redundancy and control_file_record_keep_time?What is the relationship between these 3 parameters?
    2. Explain the scenario if i set the control_file_record_keep_time=4 Redundancy=3 and Recovery Window=7?
    3. If i set the Redundancy=3 and Recovery Window=7 means my backup place only have 3 copies of backup based on the redundancy then what is the purpose of Recovery Window=7 please give some example.
    4. If i change the values for Recovery Window=3 and Redundancy=7 what will happened, how many days backup will be available in my FRA location?Explain with one scenario?
    Thanks in advance.
    Vijay.

    Hi,
    Take a look of the above doc contents:
    Configuring the Backup Retention Policy
    As explained in "Backup Retention Policies", the backup retention policy specifies which backups must be retained to meet your data recovery requirements. This policy can be based on a recovery window or redundancy. Use the CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY command to specify the retention policy.
    so  you have option to choose either  recovery windows or redundancy based you can set the configuration like
    read in the Doc What it said for both:
    Recovery Window-Based Retention Policy ==>RMAN does not consider any full or level 0 incremental backup as obsolete if it falls within the recovery window.  Additionally, RMAN retains all archived logs and level 1 incremental backups that are needed to recover to a random point within the window.
    Redundancy-Based Retention Policy==>The REDUNDANCY parameter of the CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY command specifies how many full or level 0 backups of each datafile and control file that RMAN should keep. If the number of full or level 0 backups for a specific datafile or control file exceeds the REDUNDANCY setting, then RMAN considers the extra backups as obsolete. The default retention policy is REDUNDANCY 1.

  • Retention Policy to delete both backup sets and archivelogs automatically

    I configured the Recovery Window-Based Retention Policy for my database for the window=14 days. I also set up a crontab to do a full backup every Monday. So say in a month, there will be 30 archive logs and 4 full DB backup sets.
    Now that I understand if the FRA gets filled up, older archive logs that are not needed for the 14 days recoverable window will be automatically deleted. My questions is what happen to the old backup sets? Will they get deleted automatically too if there is no space left in FRA? Or I need to use "DELETE OBSOLETE" to delete them?
    Thanks.

    One of the advantages of the FRA is, in case of space pressure obsolete objects (obsolete due to the defined retention policy) are deleted automatically. That's true for backups and archivelogs. The objects are NOT deleted automatically after the retention policy expires, but only when additional space is needed. That does not mean you don't have to care about FRA space consumption. You may have unusual amounts of archivelogs, additional backups and flashback logs (if flashback database is configured), which fill up the FRA.

    You can also exclude the operation SQL "ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT" because BACKUP ARCHIVELOG ALL implicitly switch logfile before archiving.

  • RMAN Backups with retention policy to redundancy 1 doesn't work fine.

    Hi experts,
    I have a Oracle database with the following system backups:
    Monday:       ArchiveLog Backup
    Tuesday:      Full Backup
    Wednesday:  ArchiveLog Backup
    Thursday:     ArchiveLog Backup
    Friday :         Full Backup
    Saturday:      ArchiveLog Backup
    Sunday:       ArchiveLog Backup
    ArchiveLog Backup = backup tag  'ARCHIVELOG_BACKUP' device type disk archivelog all not backed up delete all input;
    Full Backup = backup tag 'FULL_BACKUP'  device type disk database skip readonly  plus archivelog tag 'FULL_BACKUP_ARCHIVELOGS';
                         crosscheck backup;
                         crosscheck copy;
                         delete noprompt obsolete;
    RMAN configuration parameters are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;

    What this system has done until last two weeks? For example:
    Tuesday :     Full Backup
    Wednesday:  ArchiveLog Backup
    Thursday:     ArchiveLog Backup
    Friday :         Full Backup - > After that, Full backup from Tuesday and ArchiveLog backups from Wed, and Thurs, are deleted. (Thanks to Retention policy) .
    What this system do now?
    Tuesday :     Full Backup
    Wednesday:  ArchiveLog Backup
    Thursday:     ArchiveLog Backup
    Friday :         Full Backup - > After that, Full backup from Tuesday are deleted but not ArchiveLog backups from Wed, and Thurs.
    When I execute a crosscheck on RMAN return that all are AVAILABLE.
    My question is: What is right? The system backups before or after?
    Thanks for your help!

    You are confused about the purpose of crosscheck.
    There are two concepts for which you must grasp the distinction.
    - Expired
    - Obsolete
    Expired
    When an archive log is written, or rman makes a backup, a record of that archivelog or backupset is written to the repository in the control file.
    Crosscheck simply checks the existence of the archivelogs or backupsets that are recorded in the repository.  If something went missing (say, if you used an OS command to delete archivelogs), the record of the missing file is marked as 'expired'.  If you follow the crosscheck command with a 'delete expired' command, the repository records that have been marked 'expired' are deleted from the repository, so rman has no more memory of those files.  Note that 'expired' has nothing to do with retention policy.  Also note that if you do not actually issue the 'delete expired' command, the expired records will remain in the repository.
    Obsolete
    The retention policy deals with when a backupset is obsolete, meaning it is no longer needed to protect the retention period.  Backupset are not marked as obsolete.  They are evaluated for obsolescence at the time of a command that needs it -- "report obsolete" or "delete obsolete", or when FRA maintenance requires an implied 'delete obsolete'.

  • Retention policy for archivelogs in the flash recovery area

    I am using the flash recovery area for all my backup files (archive logs, data and control files). I want to use the redundancy retention policy because it is easy to calculate the space requirement. However, I am not clear how the retention policy applies to archive logs.
    Say I set the retention policy to be "keeping 3 backups". How does it affect the archive logs? Will archive logs in the flash recovery area be deleted automatically or I need to do it manually. If they are deleted automatically just like dataset files, what is the "retention policy" for them? I do not have a tape device so all archive logs are going to be stay in disk.
    Thanks.
