Batch Renaming Date Schemes
I work at a business with files dating back to 2006 or so, many video. the naming scheme of these files are all MMDDYY_filename.xxx.
We are considering redoing the naming scheme to allow for easier sort and search of certain files, but I would first like to know how to use applescript to rename selected files to the format YYMMDD_filename.xxx. I'm sure its simple and would just require an automator workflow with an applescript attached, but I'm not sure exactly what the applescript should say.
Essentially, it's swapping the (first two) and the (5th and 6th) elements of the title and leaving the rest the same. Any ideas?

I figured it out. As you saw above, I wasn't having a problem batch renaming the title of the clips. I was having a problem with the counter. I learned in a previous posting that when you change the name of a subclip of a clip, it changes the name of both the original clip (clip in event browser, not hard drive) and the other subclips associated with it. It doesn't matter how you rename the clip (changing the name in the Name box of the Inspector, change it by clicking the name of the clip once in the event browser and typing it in, or using custom naming (click on the gear button in Inspector to find it), the name will always change correctly. For some reason (I guess a FCPX thing lol), you can't use the counter in custom naming correctly unless you change the original name through custom renaming. If you change the original name of a clip the other two ways, then try to change the new name of the clip using custom renaming with the counter, the counter will always stay the same number.

Please advise how to custom batch rename files with Aperture 3 in the following format: IMG_0023.cr2 to Smith_120816_0023.cr2? I cannot find a way to structure the date in Aperture as such (YYMMDD), as well as extract only the camera file (0023, for example). Adobe Bridge CS5 can do this, but NONE of the Adobe software is retina optimized, and is terrible to look at.
In Aperture you are limited to renaming files by the entries in the File Naming preset window.
At what point are you looking to rename, import or export? It might be possible to do what you are looking to do external to Aperture either via a script or other software.

Finder batch file rename function. I have multiple files I want to rename, that have a date in their name in the mm/dd/yy format. The slashes seem to freak out the batch rename function and it won't work. I took out the slashes and worked fine. Any workarounds that would help me avoid manually changing each name? I should point out that I want to leave most of the name intact just change the first word in each name. Also the files I'm working with are in PDF format.That's a comment in the file. It has no effect at all.

Batch rename by date created??
I made the huge mistake of setting up my camera to restart the image count everytime I put a new memory card in, then I transfered them all to my computer, erased the cards only to then realize I've got a bunch of photos with the same name. Not a huge problem but now Lightroom only finds one of the two files with the same name.
My solution is to do a batch rename in Bridge but that didn't work because it used the file names for the order. What I want is all the files to be name 0001-1500 in the order they were taken. Can this be done?
Other ideas? Or maybe someone knows how to get Lightroom to see both?

In Bridge use the path bar icon (showing sort by filename, top right side
Bridge window) and change this to date created, now they will be showing in
two separate sequence order groups. Select the files per session and then
choose batch renaming.
If you don't have the path bar active use the menu view-sort.
Be aware that you can auto rename the files in both Lightroom and Bridge
(with Photodownloader) during file ingestion from card reader. You might
also want to include the creation date (yyyymmdd) and sequence number to it
so it auto renames them to a correct date and when choosing a 4 digit
sequence number it is very unlikely double filenames will happen ever again,

Does anyone know of a way to get LR5 to batch rename all it’s photos to CAPTURE DATE+CAPTURE TIME+ORIGINAL FILENAME?
I know the data is in there somewhere but my DATE+ORIGINAL FILENAME import rename preset has named all our photos with the date photos were imported not created (eeek!)

If you rename (outside Lightroom) after importing, your files will go missing and you'll have to re-link (or god forbid: re-import). Maybe that will be OK with you, and maybe it won't..
Also, such app has no idea what the original filename was, so in this case it would not do what the OP wants.

In case we build the iphone menu icons with Fireworks, 20 icons per page for 11 pages(totally 220 icons)
Since the icon name are all in same style, so I make a Text BTN symbol and use it repeatly and just change the content.(in the Text box of the Properties panel)
Now I have a Excel data file, but I have to copy and paste the name all manually for 220 times
Is there any method to batch rename/imput the symbols(Properties panel)?
by the way, I tried to use data-driven graphic wizard to merge the icons graphic slice file with xml data file.
it works but not easy to do as I may have 1000+ icons in a project.

I take pictures of a swim team and I keyword tag each image with the swimmers name. I would like to batch rename and save in a new folder the files so they have the original filename and then the keyword name. I don't see that as an option in the metadata drop down or any of the other drop downs. Is there a way to do it? I have exported it and included the metadata information and from my PC I can see it in the lower picture data, but I am sharing with a Mac user and it is easiest if the name of the swimmer is in the filename. I have over 1100 pictures and renaming them manually would be too time consuming. Thank you for your input. MB

Are you sure… Im only CS5 but in the built-in Batch Rename there is the option…
You can also choose previous filename from XMP to put back if need be… -
Batch renaming and relinking in InDesign CS4
Is there a plug-in available for InDesign that will batch rename and relink placed images?
In Quark, I used Badia Link Renamer which worked perfectly but it's not available for InDesign. (Was told they hope to have it incorporated into BigPicture for CS5.)
Is there something similar currently available for InDesign?
Essentially I need it to rename and relink files with random names to structured names such as:
001_Cust_000123456789_art_r1.tif
(I love that Bridge does batch renaming but then I have to manually update links in InDesign which is extremely time-consuming. I've also manually renamed/relinked files individually with Adobe Dialogue but it doesn't seem to be part of CS4.)
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Been looking for something for months.

Batch Change Dates in Aperture
I want to batch change hundreds of images in 1 event (or project) in Aperture 3 to be timed apart by the time designation I set forth on the batch process. I have easily done this in iPhoto 8 by selecting all the photos, ctrl-clicking "batch change" and changing the date to be set for a given time, and adding 1 minute to each photo.
I'm building a book by interleaving 2 events of scanned images by their times. It works great in iPhoto, but I can't process the images like I can in Aperture.
If anyone knows how to batch change dates as in the above procedure, let me know. Thanks.I've been using ABFR and ABFA from http://www.publicspace.net/index.html to change thousands of images in the Finder that had incorrect time/date stamps and used ABFR to pre-fix the file names with the correct date stamp. You can also setup a batch droplet based on your settings.
It was able to grab the camera date, even though the created/modified dates were wrong and correct things.
May or may not be what you are after, but for batch renaming/adjusting attributes I haven't found anything better. -
Bridge CS5 Win Batch Rename sets milliseconds to 000
Am using BridgeCS5 (Windows7) to Batch Rename (either during download from Lexar Card Reader using Bridge, or during download from Canon 7D with Cable via Bridge- or to batch rename files already in a folder within Bridge)
when I use YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS_milliseconds, milliseconds are set to 000 (thus photos are not in order necessarily if photos taken during burst mode), yet if I use YYYYMMMDD_HHMMSS_milliseconds, it sorts properly.
Have tried this multiple times, and it is *usually* reproducable - I did a batch rename on a subset of photos, and Bridge got the rename right, but then did a batch rename on the entire lot of photos, and preview said it would set the milliseconds to 000, even on the photos it got right in the subset-experiment
I need to use numeric month designation (MM) for proper file sequencing, as alpha (MMM) puts months out of chronological order.
I did NOT notice this problem in the past (say, 3-4 months ago) but it is possible I missed it.
I am NOT syncing multiple cameras or trying to integrate files from multiple cards.
BridgeCS5 is up to date with all patches.
(I checked the EXIF data on the files themselves, and it is correct, the milliseconds denote the proper image sequence, the camera is recording the files to card in correct sequence - in fact, exloring the card, all images are in proper sequence)
By having files renamed (without a sequence number added to the batch rename configuration) with milliseconds to 000, not only are they out of order, but Bridge is willing to have several files with the same exact name.
I'd be interested in a solution that allows me to continue using Bridge only for my workflow.

I see milliseconds (Canon 7D) listed as
(see Advanced tab)
3rd folder down titled "exif Properties"
eg: exif:DateTimeOriginal: 2011-07-30T10:43:12.64-04:00 whereby the camera has ordered the photos using 10:43:12.64, 10:43:12.99, etc when writing to the card. (I intepret the .64 and the .99 in these examples to be the milliseconds - am I mistaken?)
Realizing of course, the fact that Bridge is setting milliseconds to 000 is not the biggest concern, the biggest concern is that the photos are out of order when they are imported using the Batch Rename YYYYMMDD (but not when using YYYYMMMDD - notice the three M's there)
This error occurs whether telling Bridge to sort specifically via Time or not - Bridge (when using YYYYMMDD) will reorder the images even if I don't add HHMMSS and milliseconds to the sort, or even if I do - the problem seems to be the YYYYMMDD - it may also be other Date-sorting, but so far I have only used the one (that doesn't work) and the other (that does, but is useless for keeping the dates/months in numerical order)
Again, on CF card, the photos are properly ordered, as evidenced by the subject matter and the milliseconds shown in the DateTimeOriginal exif data
But in Bridge, when batch renaming, the order of the photos is mixed up, and this is evidenced by the new file names (say, if I add a sequence number to the rename)
btw, I have Bridge rename set to preserve XMP data and original file name, but whether I do or not doesn't seem to matter.
I'm shooting JPGs in Burst Mode (shouldn't matter, as the files on card are properly ordered)
(so far I have had 2 Canon reps tell me there are no milliseconds, but the exif data clearly shows that, I think? - I have sent them a screen shot of the file info, showing the exif field, and have not since heard a response saying "nuh uh"... it's still early in the day, though they normally respond within 30 minutes)

I am renaming a lot of files using Bridge Batch Rename and get errors on some of the files. I have a Windows 7 Professional 64 bit computer running Photoshop CS6. Bridge version is 5.0.1.23 x64. I am renaming files using this format - YYYYMMDD-HHMM-XXX-D700, where XXX is a sequence number. I select an entire folder of images, set the sequence number to 1 and click "Rename". Most work correctly, but in a few cases I will get several images where the Date and Time number are incorrect. I know the YYYY is incorrect, but have not looked in enough detail on the other numbers. I may get 2010 instead of 2007. If I select these again and Rename I get the correct name.
These are NEF files with sidecar files.
I will pay more attention to the errors and supply more detail - I have a lot more to rename.
Anyone else experience these type errors?A card reader was used to copy the NEF file to a folder on the computer. They were initially renamed using the Batch command in Bridge of Photoshop CS5 using the format YYYYMMDD-XXX-D700, where XXX is a sequence number. Files were in date order when renamed. I did not experience any problems with these renames, I only renamed the NEF files. I also copied the jpg files from the camera, but did not rename them. I processed the NEF files using Adobe Camera RAW and generated jpg files.
I decided to modify the name to allow mixing images from multiple cameras and have them sort in the correct order by date and time shot. I selected the renamed NEF files in Bridge (Photoshop CS6 now), modified the name to YYYYMMDD-HHMM-XXX-D700 and clicked the rename button. The sequence number was assigned based on the file order, but the YYYYMMDD and HHMM values were incorrect on a few files. The incorrect file names were all the same for the YYYYMMDD and HHMM values, sequence numbers were correct, incorrect named files were in sequence order (a group of adjacent files). The correct YYYYMMDD was 20080630, but the incorrect value was 20100222 and incorrect HHMM was 2042. The incorrect named files appeared at the end of the list since the date was 2010 instead of 2008, but they had the correct sequence number. I selected the group of incorrect named files, set the sequence number to the correct value for the first file, clicked rename and they were named correctly. The number of incorrect named files varies - 5 of 64, 3 of 77, 6 of 59, 12 of 88, 1 of 434. All of these files have sidecar files since they were processed using Adobe Camera RAW and these files are in the same folder. The sidecar files are named the same as the NEF file.
I also renamed the JPG files that were generated from Adobe Camera RAW and did not experience any problems with names in these files to date.
I also tried using Photoshop CS5 Bridge to rename the a group of NEF files and get the same problem. -
D7100, .nef files will not open, batch rename naming files differently
I recently purchased the D7100/Nikon and I am having problems opening the nef files in Bridge and Photoshop CS6 (even after updating – Raw 8.4) and also renaming the files. Lightroom 4.4, no problem.
I also tried batch renaming the files, and Bridge is not keeping the .jpg and .nef files consistent as with my old camera (D90). Also, it is creating a new date on the .nef file, rather than keeping it to the day it was shot.

I do use the DNG converter to convert the .nef files, and keep all file names consistent (.jpg, .nef, .dng).
Is something lacking in the updates for Bridge/Photoshop for this camera to view the .nef files? Is there anything I can do in Bridge to fix the Batch Renaming? I really do not want to go to each .nef file and rename each one individually. Help!You probably forgot to include the extension .dng or renamed with an extra dot (.) in the filename. Be surr to have only 1 dot with the three letter extension dng at the end (. dng)
You can use Bridge for that again to rename and use the dng extension -

I tried to rename some photos in iPhoto and now i can't see them. Every time I open iPhoto it tells me that it is rebuilding thumbnail caches yet still no photos. This is what I did:

I did this and it renamed the iPhoto thumbnail bridge. I then changed the filename back to "iPhoto" and now there are no photos.
How do I get them back.Once you upgrade to Yosemite you need to upgrade the iPhoto application to iPhoto 9.6 from the App Store.
Also, if your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on the library before iPhoto 9.6 an open it. The updater will be located in the Applications/Utilities folder.
You iPhoto Library should be located in your Home/Pictures folder. It is there and how big is it according to the Finder? If you're still having problems connect the two Macs to gather via ethernet cable, Target Disk Mode, Transferring files between two computers using FireWire or other direct method and just do a direct copy, i.e. drag the library from the 2009 Mac to the Pictures folder of the 2012 Mini. -
Batch Rename and Restructure Folders and Pictures within
Hello, I have been messing around with Automator trying to get Automator to batch rename my pictures. It seems that Automator is a little limited in renaming the way I would like to.
I would like to rename all of my pictures to have a folder structure (I don't believe Automator can do this part for me) of:
"Pictures/Nikon Transfer 2/Date Taken yyyy - dd- mm/DSC_xxxx"
Currently, after trying one of the programs out, I have altered the filename over several of them to a mess of something like "2012-01-24-DSC_0295.JPG.JPG" where the folder structure I was trying to achieve was put into the filename and the extension was added into the filename.
I have tried several programs (freeware and open source) to achieve this to no avail. I would like to stay away from trail software and paid software. If anyone knows of any Automator tricks or other free, non-trial programs that can do such a thing please let me know! It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for any feedback!
